SanDisk Clip Sport Question

Would anyone be knowledgeable? I have an old 8 GB SanDisk Clip Sport that I am trying to resurrect if it can be done easily. Yesterday I left it connected to my Linux Computer USB for two hours. The screen read "Low Battery" This morning, I plugged it into a house charger and left it charging for nearly three hours. The same "Low Battery' Screen appeared. If I hit the power button the MUSIC screen appears. I had music on there from tinkering years back. The unit seems to operate fine (I plugging in earplugs and listened to music) while charging, but as soon as I disconnect the charge wire no matter what the screen view, it all goes dark. On line searches have not been helpful. Any thoughts? ...fyi leaving it even longer on the charger just in case Ron

I've been using it in production and for personal fun as well. Its App stack is pretty slick for people who want to start self hosting. So apparently, for some unknown and completely unforeseeable reason, a few notable websites have gone dark, like reproductiverights.org, lots of DEI related content, and <checks notes...> the official page on the US constitution. For now much of this content can still be found at the Wayback Machine, but it's not hard to foresee the same forces that took down the original content going after them as well. As an alternative, is anyone familiar with completely self-hosted systems with equivalent functionality to the Wayback Machine? -- - Frank

Does Poxmox Virtualize H.264 encoding

I occasionally use OBS studio as a screen recorder in my main OS and my CPU is a little light for CPU encoding of video. I have been considering using Proxmox as my hypervisor in place of Virtualbox on my single desktop. Does anyone have any idea if proxmox provides virtual H.264 hardware encoder support like there is a virtual device for keyboard and mouse? From what I have been able to determine, I can not use a pass-through unless I get a second video card, and I suspect there will be other limitations. Right now, I can not get another video card due to a shortage of PCIe slots, $$ and power supply capacity .

Hi, again -- Tried to make it to the last meeting but was abducted, again. Most of the old equipment I had at work is gone. I was told to clear out the room and they found a STEM teacher at a local school who took it. This is what's left: Synology RS2416+ rackmount NAS w/ (2) RX1217 expansion units, AC + SAS cables - (36) 3.5" bays total (3) Dell PER805 2U rackmount servers (dual opteron) - w/ 1 set of rails, several new 2.5" SAS spares Dell PER300 1U rackmount server (dual xeon) - w/ rails, and a bunch of 3.5" SAS HDDs (pulls and new) Dell PER415 1U rackmount server (opteron) - w/ separate H700 HBA+cables, may have 8TB SATA HDD pulls installed (?) (I was unable to figure out how to make this thing do RAID10; the adaptor itself is worth something) Various 3.5" HDD pulls of various brands and sizes from 250GB to 2TB (2) Dell docking stations with AC adaptors Dell dock/monitor stand w/ no display panel (3) Dell monitor stands w/o panels Best offer. Anything left by the end of the month will go to recycling. Pete

During the last couple of meetings, we've had a couple of new users come by and it was clear to me that we were going into the higher level linux concepts, many of which were flying over their heads. I was thinking it might be really good to have a back to basics wlug meeting, where we get in get into unix philosophy, what a distro is, what parts make up a distro, common things people deal with, etc. Yeah, nah? I'm also trying to turn a page here and start the conversation about the meeting more than say.. 2 days before the meeting so the meetings can continue to have their ruckus nature, but actually have some bit of structure! Where do I put mount script?

I have a NAS that I am able to mount using NFS and I suspect that I can also mount as CIFS. I am currently using multicast DNS addresses in the addresses in my mount command and I do not want to use the numeric style IP addresses that seems to be required for /etc/fstab. Does anyone have suggestions where to place this mount command script? This command seems to needs root access, which may limit where the script with command will be placed.

Seeking Ubuntu Help

I hope one or more of you can help me. I upgraded today from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to 20.04 LTS on my desktop computer. (I know I am way behind, but I can do this only in the summer etc., etc.) I used the built-in Ubuntu update feature. It worked better than I expected and took less that two hours. The data backups I did ahead of time took much longer. Anyway, 20.04 is running but I have two problems. Number One: Many terminal commands give this message: Errors were encountered while processing: linux-image-4.15.0-212-generic Processing was halted because there were too many errors. W: Can not find PkgVer for 'linux-image-extra-4.4.0-122-generic' E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) In particular, here is what happens when I try to remove 4.4.0-212. sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-image-extra-4.4.0-212-generic Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package linux-image-extra-4.4.0-212-generic E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'linux-image-extra-4.4.0-212-generic' E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'linux-image-extra-4.4.0-212-generic' Number Two: I cannot get audio out of Line Out to my speakers. And I cannot get audio into Line In to make recordings. I *do* get audio from the audio output on my HDMI monitor. This might be related to the need for codecs, but when I try various terminal commands to load more codecs, I get problem Number 1 ! Some of what I read on the Web mentions tex files that could cause Number 1. I do have TeXstudio installed. I tried to uninstall texstudio and texlive, but when I do that, I get the message ant Number One! I'd appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you. I used grub-customizer to remove image 212 from grub. hat solved the error problem. Then a removed and re-installed alsa-base and pulseaudio. Now sound works.

Sadly no. I've looked at DokuWiki a couple of times. The problem is this. I'm lazy. The lowest barrier to entry is simply a directory called "Notes" with a bunch of text files. Being text and using a unix-like system, I've got tools like grep to find stuff. I figure the next lowest thing is some program that lets me take notes that I can then organize into some index and search against it as well. Beyond that now it becomes hosted somewhere, etc. Tim. Having our own Jitsi instance was fantastic! Jansen got into ollama AI stuff and it was really cool. He's expressed interest in doing a full end to end demo. We talked about the xz explot and it's entanglement with systemd and OpenSSH. It was a great conversation about the history and missteps of systemd and how we got to this place where so many pieces of critical software in the FOSS are supported by just a few people. Next month's meeting will need to be moved around as it conflicts with something, I'll give more details as I learn them. If you own the data but it's so horrific to manage that it sends everybody around you fleeing back to some service, that's no good either. I expect this to be a pretty lively debate. Well, ~ 1997 I bought a joystick and a couple windows games. Lost the joystick, but probably wouldn't help me in flight...? I did better with the 1990's era MS Excel97? magic escape to flight simulator that easily flew me on the moon, to a monolith. Fast forward to now. While looking for my town's GIS tax maps, (which I never found, just PDF's w/ lot lines, no owner names, no tax $info. Every town is different.) Then, under clueless town "Tax Maps" webpage, I found this note: *Please note*: Parcel boundaries are intended to be used for the purpose of property assessment and should not be considered survey accurate. You will need to have Google Earth <http://earth.google.com/> installed to view this data. For help using Google Earth go to the Help Center..... and forget all about tax maps ( I added that here-doug) doug> I got Earth help, yes! I have no joystick, so keyboard and mouse. Topic #1: Turing Pi 2 hardware Wlug member Zori Babroudi recently bought a Turning Pi 2 and a bunch of Pi and Rocks compute modules. Currently, it's a work in progress, but eventually once things are totally working on it, I'd like to show it off in its full glory. But in the meantime, we can marvel at the hardware. Ultimately, the plan is to run k8s on it and do some LLM based AI stuff as well. Topic #2: ProxMox With BroadCom's purchase and destruction of VMware, many of us are scrambling to look for alternatives to VMware Esxi. One great contender is ProxMox. It's a debian based distro that's focused on providing a great interface to manage vms running on kvm. It also has great support for video card pass through (something I know Brandon is *very* interested in). I've got a 3 node proxmox cluster that I will show off. John Stoffel has also been experimenting with it as well so both of us can talk about the good/bad/ugly of it. Firewalld/iptables/nftables question

All First off, I’m in way over my head. $dayjob we have a redhat 8 box. We are looking to take in syslog messages and sent them out to one/two different IP addresses. We tried using https://github.com/sleinen/samplicator and while it works perfectly and a one banana job to setup, we seem to be dropping a significant amount of traffic on the box. At least 10% of the logs are missing and we have not loaded up the system yet. We tuned out the network buffers and added 25MB of memory without any improvement. https://github.com/sleinen/samplicator/issues/72 Seems at a high rate of logs (which I think we would fall under) there seems to be some issues. I went to microcenter on the 23rd of October and they said sorry and said the 3rd of November, and today before I even left the house they say "sold out." I can only speculate on how before they were even on the shelves they were sold out.. but there we are.. With that said, the orange pi 5 keeps looking even more interesting, though it completely blows the price point out of the water at $100.. Ubuntu with SSSD

I have a lab full of Ubuntu 22.04 machines and have (finally) set them all up with AD login via SSSD As i was testing, new SSSD users were added to the Gnome3 Greeter bage. Somewhere along the way with testing, new users stopped being added to the greeter page. The ones added previously automatically are still there, but new ones are not being added. I was wondering what configurations effects this behavior? I want the little kids names added to the list so they can just click on their name and enter their password. Last night it was brought to my attention that Jitsi has decided to become more "zoom" like. That sucks. Moreover, and I've noticed this as well, their free instance's performance is all over the place.. some meetings the performance is spot on, other meetings, like last night, it was not so great. There should be zero barriers to people joining the meeting. To this end, I'm going to explore what it's going to take to stand up my own Jitsi instance. Debian 12 networking

I installed Debian 12 on a PI4. I got rtl_433 working and receiving data while connected to the pi4 using ssh. Once that was accomplished I rebooted via "sudo shutdown -r now" to verify that all the settings would survive a reboot. When the pi rebooted it was no longer available on the network. I connected to the pi4 console directly and received this message at the login screen "filtering via arp/ip/ip6tables is no longer available by default". I am new to debian and not having ifconfig available is a real handicap for me. Can someone please offer some advice or point me to resources that will help me fix this issue. Searching the internet has not offered any helpful resources so far. Thanks, Mike

DWG to ... well anything else

So we have directory after directory of AutoCAD DWG files of the various floors of the campus. Beyond *creating* the floorplans, we have no use for AutoCAD - all our applications work better with high quality PNG or vector PDF files. I've been playing with Pipelines and jobs in GitLab recently, and I'm looking for a way to convert a DWG file to something more usable in my automation. Pretty much if a user checks in the updated DWG, it's exported to PNG and scp'd to our patch database server. I was trying QCad as there is a reference of dxf2png - but it keeps crashing in my instance of Fedora. Any thoughts? Benjamin J. Old DEC/Sun Video cables from late 1980s/early 90s

Hey all: This isn't necessarily a Linux-related post so apologies up front, but this seemed like a good forum in case someone has old computer hardware and is looking for such things, or knows someone in such a situation. I've come across a cache of old video cable from about 30 years ago, Sun and DEC cables (and one Apple cable). They might be difficult to obtain now. I'm not trying to sell these cables; ideally I'd like to get them into the hands of some historian trying to keep their old computer hardware working. Thanks; list of cables follows: 6x 13W3/M-to-13W3/M cables, two of them Sun-branded and four generic. Since the non-sun cables were found in the same box as the sun video cables I assume they're all sun-compatible. 4x 13W3/M-to-4BNC/M Sun video cables. Two still bagged, all Tatung-branded. Tatung once manufactured of "Generic" (i.e., less expensive) Sun UltraSPARC hardware. 4x LCC17/M-to-3BNC/M DEC-branded BC29G-09 video cables, for some sort of Vax- or DECStation monitors. 2x DB15/F-to-3BNC/M DEC-branded BC23J-03 video cables, for some sort of Vax- or DECstation. These two are in somewhat rough shape. 1x 13W3/M-to-DA15/M Apple video connector, for Apple Mac-2 or Quadra machines of the late 1980s. [end of list]

At last night's meeting, a new attendee brought up a problem she was having and one of the solutions that got bandied about was Joplin. After doing some research, this might be my new note taking app. Another very interesting FOSS tool out there is called "Trilium" https://github.com/zadam/trilium As much as I like google's keep.. I'm fully aware that google capable of just pulling the rug out from under me in a moment's notice. I've spun up U22.04.3 server and I'm going to tinker with Joplin and possibly Trilium and let people know what I think of them. Installing ubuntu on a mac..

So funny enough another Mac fell into my lap and our success with Matt's mac encouraged me to get U22.04 installed on a 2014 macbook pro.. I tried to install using Ventoy only to hit this issue: https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/52 I ended up writing the ISO directly to my scratch stick and installing from there. Thoughts or experience with long range (350ft) wifi

Hello W-luggers — I have an out-building where I’d like to have wifi. The distance is about 350ft. There are some trees in the way, but not a thick forest. I’m curious to know if anyone here has recommendations on outdoor, long range wifi equipment. Perhaps something with a parabolic antenna or otherwise directional antenna. Hey Gang, We had an amazing meeting last night, I'd like to thank Kevin from Technocopia for providing us the space, we will be back!! We had a number of random interlopers just show up and the discussion quickly pivoted from keyboards to linux drivers and the unix philosophy. The conversation then shifted to analog control devices and a guy named Rick gave us all a great education on analog process and control technologies. Then to cap things off, a maker named Matt showed up with an iMac and asked if we could help him get Linux Mint installed, in classic WLUG fashion we jumped at the opportunity and in no time flat we got him sorted out. It turns out that machine is slightly too old to run DeVinci Resolve, but I believe it'll be a great machine for him to get some basic linux knowledge. Hey Gang, It appears that WPI isn't going to work out for us as a stable place to hold meetings. I have two questions to ask the group. 1. Does the second Thursday still work for people or would a Wed/Fri work better? 2. How far would people be willing to drive? As for the second question, doing some research, Leominster public library has meeting rooms (I'm also a LPL member) and they're open till 9pm. Moreover, Leominster has great afforable places to eat. I believe it's likely too late for me to schedule a meeting at LPL, but I can always call and ask. So I suspect this months meeting (which is going to be this Thursday) will be virtual. Though I'll let people know asap. Let me know what you think, I'd really like some input. HDTV Antennas

Has anyone in the list had any experience using an external HDTV antenna in Worcester? Reason I ask is that we ditched the full spectrum tv channel lineup and went with a the abbreviated channel lineup. However, we are missing the local broadcast tv stations and I was wondering it I could pick up some of them using an external antenna. I searched the web for information but I do not have enough of a radio background to understand the meaning of the signal strength tables that I find. A while ago I purchased an interior antenna and did not have any luck so I figure that I might try an external antenna. Laser cut puzzles?

Guys, Anyone have a lead to where I could get a puzzle design cut out with a laser from either thick cardboard or thin plywood? But I also want to engrave a message on the puzzle pieces before they're cut out. I've been looking into inkscape pluggins for this and I think I've got one I can use, it's now finding someone/place with the right equipment. Any ideas? The message would just be text, maybe some simple graphics. Nothing crazy, but the entire idea is to make the message into a puzzle to be put together. John

Wacom One with Pressure Sensitivity

I bought a used Wacom One a while ago. It is a drawing tablet (not a standalone tablet as it needs to hook up to a computer). It has an display that you can use the stylus on. If you go to Edit->Input Devices, you can enable "xwayland- tablet stylus". (Obviously it probably has a different name if you aren't using wayland.) Once enabled the "Dynamics" setting in Tool Options takes effect. You can choose from a large variety of options. For example, "Basic Dynamics" makes pressure affect opacity and velocity affect size. I've been using "Pressure Size" which simply makes pressure affect the size of the pencil (or other tool). It probably hard to tell from this scaled down image but the lines for the eyebrows have a different thickness from the larger outer lines. I used to have to edit the tool settings to do that so this is nicer. I use IoTaWatt (http://iotawatt.com/) for solar/energy monitoring at home. It works with a standard web browser (no app required) and doesn't require any kind of Internet/cloud connection (but can use one if desired). It will keep years of data internally on the SD card and you can make pretty graphs from your phone/laptop/whatever web browser, or you can download the data and do whatever you want with it. It is an open source software/open hardware design by a guy in New Hampshire. It is manufactured in the US, and it is ETL certified. ("The hardware is professionally manufactured in an ISO9001 contract facility in New Hampshire, USA. The base units are ETL safety certified to UL standards") See pics of my setup here: http://www.wlug.org/files/iotawatt/ $314.30 gets you a US 120V bundle with split-core CTs for 14 circuits (2 mains + 12 branch circuits), 9V AC reference transformer, and USB power supply. The split-core/clamp-on CTs are easy to install, just open them up, place them around the wire, and close them. If you use non-split-core CTs (not included in the bundle above), you need to to disconnect the hot lines from each circuit breaker to slip on the CT, then reattach to the breaker.

I discovered a Love2D remake of Lady Bug. I've never played the arcade game but it looked interesting. It is a maze chase game like Pac-Man but you have these turntiles through out the maze that you can move to alter the maze. The remake was well done but used sprites taken from the arcade game. I replaced all the graphics with new creations. I also modified the game to support two player simultaneous. Re-Roll RHEL isos to skip the 60sec countdown and media check

Good Afternoon, I'm trying to re-roll a RHEL9 iso to remove the media check and 60s timeout that occurs because rd.live.check is baked into the kernel command line and grub menu. I'd like to use the result with an unattended install. I start by loop mounting the OEM iso image and extracting the contents to a working dir. In the working directory, I've attempted to edit EFI/BOOT/grub.cfg an isolinux/grub.cfg before rerolling the disk with: mkisofs -o output.iso -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table workingdir But after editing either or both, I'm still presented with the 60s default timeout and the media check (rd.live.check) in the kernel commandline. Is there something akin to grub2-mkisofs that I need to do for my changes to the grub.cfg for this iso prior to my re-rolling it? Thank you, Dan

Solving Nvidia support with image-based distros

Hey all, I thought I'd share a side project I've been working on, which involves building containers with Nvidia kernel modules and userspace components that work as bootable OS images thanks to "container-native" <https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/OstreeNativeContainerStable> support within Fedora Silverblue. This approach has several advantages over the traditional package management model for installing out-of-tree drivers, including: 1) Have the install process and QA shift from client side to server side, making a CI/CD model of driver distribution possible. 2) Eliminate the possibility of update failures (i.e., will a , as only container builds with successful runs will be committed to a container registry and updates are delivered with an "immutable" model 3) Modules are signed with one key from a central repo, ensuring that only one key has to be enrolled for all client systems for enabling secure boot support 4) Enable the possibility of supporting multiple driver release streams. i.e., give users the freedom to rebase on 525xx, 520xx, 470xx series drivers, etc, as well as pin to a specific image snapshot in case of a driver regression 5) Have the ability to download a pre-built bootable image from a central repo, or build an image locally with further customizations thanks to the flexibility of the Containerfile format 6) Give maintainers a broader framework for debugging regressions, namely being able to boot into a specific snapshot listed in a bug report It's true that Nvidia has been the source of many hardware issues <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWzMvlj2RQ>. I'm currently on Linode, but since Charter is blocking all of Linode's IP space from sending email... it kinda makes it hard to keep in touch with neighbors who have @charter.net email addresses. Don't want to spend a ton,but I would like to get something with a dedicated IP and 2gb of RAM, or maybe a little more. Not much more than that. I don't want any management, I'll do it all myself. Hi all, Great to see you all in the last meeting :-) I was the skateboarder...who caught me almost falling shortly before I left? LOL ----------- Remote X [Insert name I've forgotten here (sorry!)] mentioned that their users connect to a remote session's root desktop (or whatever you call the initial/primary display :0 deal that you initially/locally get). I would like to do this as well. SSH with port forwarding is probably my preference, but wireguard would be OK as well. I don't think I want to directly expose anything like xrdp. Anyway - could you please refresh my memory as to what was being used? I'm running i3 in this case (started via lightdm). I generally have not loved using VNC-based tools, but if that's what is currently recommended, I guess I'll give it another go. ------------ SSHFS Optimization Also - I referred to using sshfs internally for myself to my NAS, and some optimizations for it. Mojotron is a twin stick shooter similar to Robotron: 2084 or Llamatron. I've been redoing the graphics and fixing up the game. I decided to make a trailer to promote the game. Simple IP KVM

Though with the pain of getting RPi4s these days... it's going to take me a while to actually build one. Guys, I've got a free Dell PowerSwitch 5324, it's 24 1gb ports and I replaced the loud fans with some quieter ones, but now the fan error light is always on. Is anyone interested in this? It works great, it's just old and I wanted to move to all TP-Link at home to manage it all with Omada. Sorta good idea... Fiber internet options in Worcester

Hey all, My wife and I have been on the market for a home, and we feel that Worcester would be a great city for us to move to. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Worcester has much if any options for fiber internet which is important for both of us working from home. The fastest provider appears to be Spectrum, and I've heard only bad things about them. Last I heard, Worcester has been held down by a monopoly from Spectrum, and I don't know if the city government has been working to change this with municipal fiber or trying to get other ISPs in the area to improve competition. It seems like the kind of issue that network engineers from WPI could assist with. Anyone have more information on this? - Josh

They're looking to hire a mechanical engineer where I work, and talking about how a lot of the best candidates have been from WPI. That got me thinking about one guy who'd been at several meetings, and graduated maybe 2 years ago, though I don't think he was an engineering major. He had a legendary appetite and I think he moved to Nashua. I'm pretty sure his name had 2 syllables and started with 'S'. I keep thinking "Salman", but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Thankfully things are getting sorted out at my end and I will be focusing much more on WLUG. Tonight the meeting is going to be online. Snaps and the future of Ubuntu

Last week marked the release of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS <https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-22-04-lts-released>, and so far it looks like some noteworthy improvements over the last LTS, notably Wayland being enabled for Intel/AMD users by default! There is no Wayland enablement for Nvidia users in 22.04 LTS though, and Pulseaudio is still the default audio server instead of the more modern pipewire+wireplumber that's been appearing in other distributions. It also appears that Firefox in 22.04 LTS is now installed as a snap at the request of Mozilla, and it drops the deb package from the official repo. Also interesting is that Ubuntu will continue to avoid supporting flatpak in favor of snap, as explained by Mark Shuttleworth: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/04/ubuntu-wont-support-flatpak-anytime-soon *>I can say right now Flatpak’s wouldn’t work for us. I don’t think they have the security story and I also don’t think they have the ability to deliver the same integrity of execution over time that Snaps have ‘cos we built those things into Snaps* >*I like the fact that people have a diversity of opinions on ways to solve the problem […] but I also think we’re going to deliver a far better experience to developers and to users if we concentrate our efforts around something we really can move forward.* I respectfully disagree with Shuttlesworth's appraisal, because it seems to contradict the overall experience I've seen from open source projects that have a tendency to package flatpaks and appimages which in turn tend to be well-supported across many distributions. While I understand that it's very easy to set up flatpak in Ubuntu <https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu> these days, I'm still disappointed that this is the stance Ubuntu is taking because I feel that this doesn't quite align with the interests of the Linux community at large who're trying to improve the desktop experience. I worry that the distribution that got me into Linux years ago will increase fragmentation as time goes on if it continues to focus on its walled garden approach. What do you think? - Josh

Have you cooked up a really cool gadget and upon looking at the huge mess of breadboard wires thought, "It sure would be great if I could turn that into a PCB, but alas, that software is expensive and proprietary and only runs on windows." KiCAD is an open source EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tool that allows you to take your pile o' wires and IC's and turn it into a PCB! Long time member John Stoffel and myself will show you how Thursday night at 7pm at the Hudson Public Library! We'll also have the meeting online at Jitsi and we'll be recording this whole thing for youtube! Afterwards we'll likely head off for dinner and keep up the nerdiness! The topic is KiCAD, a FOSS EDA (Electronic Design Automation) CAD tool. KiCAD is a computer aided design software package that enables you to create logical circuit diagrams and convert them into a PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards). This software is being used in the industry and has a vibrant community around it. The speaker for this talk is our own esteemed member John Stoffel with myself lending a hand. John and I will show up some of the features of the software, talk about how he's used it to create his own PCB's and give a quick demo. clean Linux install while keeping the same packages installed as before

I'm more familiar with Fedora where I do something like this. It should be possible to do the same in Ubuntu with the appropriate apt-get commands. 1. List all packages with their names only (no versions) on both the old system and newly installed system, assuming the new system is booted and the old system is mounted at /mnt/oldroot. Alternatively, do the first command (without the --root parameter) when booted to the old version and save the file somewhere: rpm -qa --qf='%{name}\n' --root=/mnt/oldroot | sort -u > old-pkglist.txt rpm -qa --qf='%{name}\n' | sort -u > new-pkglist.txt 2. Compare the files and save that output: diff -b -U0 {old,new}-pkglist.txt > old-new-diff.txt grep ^- old-new-diff.txt | cut -c2- > missing-from-new.txt grep ^+ old-new-diff.txt | cut -c2- > only-in-new.txt 3. Now go through the list and install what you want. I usually do this step manually rather than using some automated script, since there are many changes I don't necessarily want, such as shared libraries. All I really care about is applications/commands/utilities. I go through the lists, reading the diff in one window and installing stuff I want in another: dnf install a b c d ... and/or this which installs a package and all of its subpackages except development and debug subpackages. This is great when a package has a bunch of plugins I want: dnf --exclude='*devel*' --exclude='*debug*' install foo-\* ...
