Here are two emails from the Fedora Development list about what I was just talking about: 1. CentOS Stream as a rolling release *of a stable RHEL branch*. 2. You're not getting radical new changes if you run CentOS Stream; you're just getting the changes you'd usually get in RHEL stable point releases (e.g. 8.1, 8.2 etc) but getting them early and as they are produced, rather than in periodic lumps). For some folks / maintenance styles this might still be an issue, but it should work OK in quite a lot of cases. For those that want the equivalent of a point release, I would think they should be able to write an ansible script to upgrade to the point release of packages that EL 8.x ship with. Hi all, Great to see you all in the last meeting :-) I was the skateboarder...who caught me almost falling shortly before I left? LOL ----------- Remote X [Insert name I've forgotten here (sorry!)] mentioned that their users connect to a remote session's root desktop (or whatever you call the initial/primary display :0 deal that you initially/locally get). I would like to do this as well. SSH with port forwarding is probably my preference, but wireguard would be OK as well. I don't think I want to directly expose anything like xrdp. Anyway - could you please refresh my memory as to what was being used? I'm running i3 in this case (started via lightdm). I generally have not loved using VNC-based tools, but if that's what is currently recommended, I guess I'll give it another go. ------------ SSHFS Optimization Also - I referred to using sshfs internally for myself to my NAS, and some optimizations for it. This is my current alias to mount it: sshfs -o cache=yes -o kernel_cache -o Ciphers=aes128-ctr -o Compression=no -o ServerAliveCountMax=3 -o ServerAliveInterval=15 -o reconnect -C -o idmap=user server: /mymountpoint I got a few of the recommended switches from this article that finally convinced me to just forget about NFS: https://blog.ja-ke.tech/2019/08/27/nas-performance-sshfs-nfs-smb.html Thanks! Chris PS - I used to respond here from an account that was at from a riseup.net account. I hope all wlug members have a fantastic Thanksgiving. While you're wondering about what to talk about, they've just introduced some new data measurements. The largest being a quettabyte. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-03747-9 I wonder what filesystem you'd even use to manage a quettabyte? Hey Gang! I unfortunately have a conflict on the 10th and the 17th! I'm moving the meeting to the 9th. A couple of people have pulled me aside and asked about moving the meeting to Wednesday.. you've gotten your wish. As usual, the meeting will be online (now with new and improved A/V tech!) We'll obviously be talking about the heartbleed bug.. Linux kernel 6.0 among other things! More details to come!
