Hi All,
Thanks for the input I recieved here, I've bought an Epson R300 color
printer for making photos. Once I figured out that the debian package
for libcupsys has the permissions borked for the files in
/usr/lib/cups/backend so that they aren't executable, all is well.
I've been happily browsing images in 'gqview', then loading them into
gimp 2.0, then printing them.
But I'm having issues with scaling images. I have to guess how/where
to crop the images so that I can get the maximum amount of the picture
onto the paper. It's a real pain, with lots of back and forth.
Is there a tool out there, or a gimp plugin, which allows me to take a
picture, select a paper size and gives me a template to crop/scale the
image to fit that paper size nicely? Any hints on what tools/packages
I should be looking at for this type of work?
For example, I've got a picture of my nephew and son which I wanted to
print out. I also wanted to zoom in a bit (or crop the image down to
get closer to them) so that when it printed, I maximized the use of
the 4x6 stock. A real pain in gimp 2.0, but since I'm just using the
standard Debian install, maybe there is a plugin to help with this?
Thanks,
John
This is a question for those cups guru's out there. I'm trying to
write a custom perl script for cups that does accounting. I have a
database with users and quotas and I'm writing a filter for cups that
checks to make sure the user has enough left on their balance before
printing. I was curious how I would go about sticking this into the
cups filtering chain. I've been reading up on the cups docs but I'm
still kinda confused on where to put it. Any help would be much
appreciated.
Thanks,

Subject: Invitation to Developing on Open Standards Databases -IBM tech
briefing in Boston on April 5
Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 23:50:20 -0800
From: Karen C Lee <leekc(a)us.ibm.com>
Please join us and extend this invitations to the complimentary IBM
briefing to your user group members and colleagues.
Do you want to learn how to develop and deploy database applications for
the small to medium business on Linux? Cloudscape/Derby, IBM DB2
Express and IBM DB2 Everyplace are exactly what you need to get started.
More than 80 IBM products use Java-based Cloudscape for its portability,
easy deployment, open standards-based Java engine, small footprint, and
more. Developers worldwide are taking advantage of these benefits, and
now you can too.
Register today for this briefing by visiting:
http://www.ibm.com/developerWorks/offers/techbriefings/
These briefings will be held in the following cities:
** Boston on April 5*
* Montreal on April 7
* Chicago on April 12
* San Francisco on April 14
* Austin on May 17
* Toronto on May 19
During this event, you'll see IBM DB2 Universal Database Express Edition
V8.2 -- the lowest priced, full-function relational database on Linux
or Windows platform choices. We'll also demonstrate how DB2 Everyplace
features a small footprint relational database and high performance data
synchronization solution that enables enterprise applications and data
to be securely extended to mobile devices such as personal digital
assistants (PDAs), smart phones and other embedded mobile devices. The
briefing will end with a discussion on how to build database intensive
web applications using IBM DB2 and IBM Rational Web Developer. All
attendees will receive trial software from IBM.
To reserve your seat for this briefing please visit.

Since there seems to be a decent bit of interest in this script, I'll
post when my release version 0.2 today. For anyone who is interested
check out http://gforge.maxslack.com/projects/cupsacct/. It's my
personal project site and I have put up the first release. I'll be
releasing the files here so it's the best way to get them. Not all
the components of the project site are working yet (mostly web based
CVS) but you can download the release tarball if you are interested.
Also note that this script is still heavily modified for specific use
in the ECE databases. I'm working on changing it so that it will be
more universal and include sql to create the database and tables.

Hi Everyone,
I have a 160G NTFS partitioned USB external disk drive that I would like
to use in my VMware instance.
I tried to get VMware to recognize the drive but it failed to do so
because the Linux USB driver had it locked.
Removing and re-attaching the drive did not release the driver lock.
What resolved the problem was to unload the usb-storage kernel module
using the command:
/sbin/rmmod usb-storage
This works great but the module reappears the next time I boot the
beast.
Does anyone know of a way to make this permanently go away?
Any help you can provide on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Andy
Is there any interest in a linux fundamentals talk?
It seems like I am the noobi'est member of the lug and
don't want to bore everyone, but a discussion around
basic installs (partitioning, swap size, boot loaders,
etc), upgrades (apt, yum, emerge), application
installs (rpm's, source) and kernel patching and
upgrades would be a good nights discussion.
I don't mind participating in the speaking, but I have
plenty of questions myself.
Just a thought.
Mike
