For Sale: Alpha PWS 600AU
by Phillip G Deneault
600mhz Alpha with 384megs of ram. On board sound and LAN.
This is a REAL AU model, with the qlogic SCSI card and the powerstorm
video card(in case you wanted to run OpenVMS). I would recommend using
a different video card or using the serial console for anything BSD or
Linux.
I believe it has a 9 gig SCSI disk in it, but I've suplemented it with a
50gig IDE drive on the IDE chain. I've also replaced the IDE CD-ROM
with an 68-pin SCSI CD-ROM(yes, thats right, 68-pin).
I also have all the original docs with it.
I was running FreeBSD 5.3 on it until a week ago when I upgraded the
machine. Nice little hobby system.
$200 bucks or best offer. If anyone has any questions, or wishes to
haggle, please reply to me(and not the list, they hate that).
Thanks,
Phil

Printing Photos - cropping in gimp 2.0
by John Stoffel
Hi All,
Thanks for the input I recieved here, I've bought an Epson R300 color
printer for making photos. Once I figured out that the debian package
for libcupsys has the permissions borked for the files in
/usr/lib/cups/backend so that they aren't executable, all is well.
I've been happily browsing images in 'gqview', then loading them into
gimp 2.0, then printing them.
But I'm having issues with scaling images. I have to guess how/where
to crop the images so that I can get the maximum amount of the picture
onto the paper. It's a real pain, with lots of back and forth.
Is there a tool out there, or a gimp plugin, which allows me to take a
picture, select a paper size and gives me a template to crop/scale the
image to fit that paper size nicely? Any hints on what tools/packages
I should be looking at for this type of work?
For example, I've got a picture of my nephew and son which I wanted to
print out. I also wanted to zoom in a bit (or crop the image down to
get closer to them) so that when it printed, I maximized the use of
the 4x6 stock. A real pain in gimp 2.0, but since I'm just using the
standard Debian install, maybe there is a plugin to help with this?
Thanks,
John

Power Supply Needed
by John Stoffel
Hi all,
Anyone have a Ilssan ISF 120SI compatible Power supply they'd be
willing to sell me cheap? This is for an eMachines box that died in a
lightning storm. It's for a couple with limited means and I just
don't have any spares around the house at all.
Specs for what I'm looking for:
Input: 100-120VAC 3A
Ouput: +3.3V +5V +12V -12V +%VSB
6A 14A 2A 0.3A 0.72A
120W
It's a small power supply with a built in Fan that sticks out. More
info (web pages for compatible ones) available on request.
Thanks,
John

RH8.0 user in Worc. area
by Pete Wason
Hiall!
I'm wondering if anybody's using RH8.0 and could assist me in a general package
updating/security audit/admin session. Nothing too crazy, I just need some help
grokking alternatives to up2date (yum, etc.) and making sure my server isn't
bleeding wildly from it's little pointed head. I live in Sutton..

I installed a bad package from fedora over the weekend.
xorg-x11.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45
There are a total of 13 packages that are associated with the upgrade.
This also affects FC4. There is a beta fix that I hope to test tonight.
DO NOT INSTALL THESE PACKAGES.
If you have already installed the bad packages and are experiencing console
lock-up, you can fight your way back by booting to single user mode, setting
inittab to runlevel 3. At least your system will work at that level.
Next, if you have another machine, you can get the old packages from fedora
and downgrade (with the "--oldpackage" option).
You can read about this at:

USB Flash Drive on RH 9
by Dick Goodman
I'm not really fluent in device stuff, but I just configured a RH9 machine
for a project, and was trying to offload some config files to a flash drive.
After searching, I added to fstab:
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb_flash vfat
noauto,user,rw,umask=0 0 0
and did a
mkdir /mnt/usb_flash as root
here's the log ... only partially recognized ... did a modprobe usb-storage
after the "not claimed by any active driver" message...removed and inserted
several times... umount obviously not recognized.

failed graphics
by Bill Mills-Curran
Thank god for mutt... My motherboard integrated graphics died this
evening. It still works in console mode (have to boot to init 3), but
when I try to start graphics, or go to init 5 -- caput. What I see is
a most of the firmware boot (e machine logo) with fritzed colors in a
band across the top -- about 15% of the screen.
I was wondering if I could just add a new card and have that work. To
do that, I suppose I'd have to find a way to disable the motherboard
graphics card
Any ideas? If this seems like a good idea, can you recommend a
reasonable graphics card? I'm not a gamer. The most
graphics-intensive thing I do is watch a movie.
TIA,
Bill

Temp job opening
by Mike Leo
wlug members,
I work for a health care company in Wellesely Hills
that may soon be looking for a temp linux/windows sys
admin.
I am not sure if this has been officially announced,
so I make no promises, nor do I decide who gets hired,
so don't look for favor's, nor be mad if this is false
hope. I just wanted to extend the information to the
team.
However, if you are interested, we might by looking
for someone with 3+ years linux support (RH) and a 6+
year windows background.
we have 380+ Windows/Novell/linux servers, and the
linux piece is growing faster and becoming business
critical...thus the need for this person.
Being the senior linux person here, I want to dedicate
myself to linux, which will leave a gap in the windows
support. This new role would be to fill in that
windows gap, and support linux with me, bridging the
gaps in both areas.
This will be only a temp/contract position. Typically
the contract is for 3 months, but all other
contractors here stay until they find perminant rolls
(here or elsewhere). There are also other factors
that will be discussed if you make it to the interview
process.
If interested in submitting a resume, please email me
at mleo963(a)yahoo.com and I will put your resume in
with our recruiter.
Thanks
Mike
