Intersection of Open Source and Social Change

Hey folks, At dinner after the last meeting we had an interesting conversation around the intersection of software/technology and big picture social change. This has been an area of interest of mine for a while now, and I'd love to connect with other people who would be interested in talking about ways to make meaningful change. Would anyone be interested in joining a discussion on something like Discord, Slack, or maybe an open source alternative? -- Greg Boyce

You're not getting radical new changes if you run CentOS Stream; you're just getting the changes you'd usually get in RHEL stable point releases (e.g. 8.1, 8.2 etc) but getting them early and as they are produced, rather than in periodic lumps). For some folks / maintenance styles this might still be an issue, but it should work OK in quite a lot of cases. For those that want the equivalent of a point release, I would think they should be able to write an ansible script to upgrade to the point release of packages that EL 8.x ship with. old equipment - update

Hi, again -- Tried to make it to the last meeting but was abducted, again. Most of the old equipment I had at work is gone. I was told to clear out the room and they found a STEM teacher at a local school who took it. This is what's left: Synology RS2416+ rackmount NAS w/ (2) RX1217 expansion units, AC + SAS cables - (36) 3.5" bays total (3) Dell PER805 2U rackmount servers (dual opteron) - w/ 1 set of rails, several new 2.5" SAS spares Dell PER300 1U rackmount server (dual xeon) - w/ rails, and a bunch of 3.5" SAS HDDs (pulls and new) Dell PER415 1U rackmount server (opteron) - w/ separate H700 HBA+cables, may have 8TB SATA HDD pulls installed (?) (I was unable to figure out how to make this thing do RAID10; the adaptor itself is worth something) Various 3.5" HDD pulls of various brands and sizes from 250GB to 2TB (2) Dell docking stations with AC adaptors Dell dock/monitor stand w/ no display panel (3) Dell monitor stands w/o panels Best offer. Anything left by the end of the month will go to recycling. Pete

I thought this month we might talk a bit more about some more practical linux desktop stuff. How to install software, window managers, etc. Then I thought we might dive into filesystems with a foray into LVM. Afterwards we'll head out for dinner and keep up the conversation! It's been an exciting month in the FOSS world! YubiKey clone attacks, Ubuntu upgrade breakage! Microsoft has decided it's win 11 AI recall feature can't be removable.. I suspect lots of people are going to get real interested in linux.. bcachefs drama. If someone has a topic they've like to talk to about, let me know!
