clean Linux install while keeping the same packages installed as before

I'm more familiar with Fedora where I do something like this. It should be possible to do the same in Ubuntu with the appropriate apt-get commands. 1. List all packages with their names only (no versions) on both the old system and newly installed system, assuming the new system is booted and the old system is mounted at /mnt/oldroot. Alternatively, do the first command (without the --root parameter) when booted to the old version and save the file somewhere: rpm -qa --qf='%{name}\n' --root=/mnt/oldroot | sort -u > old-pkglist.txt rpm -qa --qf='%{name}\n' | sort -u > new-pkglist.txt 2. Compare the files and save that output: diff -b -U0 {old,new}-pkglist.txt > old-new-diff.txt grep ^- old-new-diff.txt | cut -c2- > missing-from-new.txt grep ^+ old-new-diff.txt | cut -c2- > only-in-new.txt 3. Now go through the list and install what you want. I usually do this step manually rather than using some automated script, since there are many changes I don't necessarily want, such as shared libraries. All I really care about is applications/commands/utilities. I go through the lists, reading the diff in one window and installing stuff I want in another: dnf install a b c d ... and/or this which installs a package and all of its subpackages except development and debug subpackages. This is great when a package has a bunch of plugins I want: dnf --exclude='*devel*' --exclude='*debug*' install foo-\* ... Beyond being a emacs wizard, he's also a mainframe guru, a unix/linux guru and is/was deeply involved in the writing/maintaining of the symbolics lisp operating system. Today he's going to show off some of his emacs foo. If you think emacs is an editor of a bygone era when things were more civilized, kalman will likely not change your mind. However, if you want to take your emacs usage to the next level you'll love this talk. If you're totally not into emacs, that's okay, come along for the ride all the same. Hi from doug in Maine ...former WPI netops geek, before that a *NIX admin back to when Vax and Sparc were corporate choices (I guess I've gotten over pining for BSD variants). I supported many emacs geeks (sw/hw developers) then, but never adopted emacs in my pea brain. I guess I preferred vi's stupid modes and ESC and ":" , over CTRL-everything? in emacs. Or maybe I got bit by a macro as a child. For some ancient emacs lore...its security hole Way Back Then is lovingly(ha) mentioned in Clifford Stoll's awesome/fun? book "The Cuckoo's Egg". Just to get root, back then. Access via hopping thru dialup 1200baud modems, and a world where security was off-radar to the engineers owning systems. Even MilNet systems. What fun ! Dumb hacker paradise! One fun line from below: What do you feed a Trojan horse ? Oooh, found a 52-page scan of the book at http://nationalsecurity.gmu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Cuckoos-Egg-Read… But as always, I ramble. George: Great question. I "(d)evolved" into a dumb linux Mint user (a great Ubuntu-based distro ..though you gotta choose, Cinnamon,MATE,Xfce. I chose Mate, 20.1 is stable. I forget the why's, but I know it's good with a few beloved windows keyb tricks like ALT-TAB). As a sysadmin responsible for reloading/building systems, I had to fret packages once, .....obviously this was the cat's meow compared to rebuilding from sources and "make". I remember studying our typical < 1000 RedHat packages and feeling like I knew what most of them were. Now I've got > 2000 on Mint, and barely recognize half of them. Today for fun (Thanks Tim), I looked to see... if the one thing I recall needing to install off-package a few years ago = "chrome" showed up in either my sudo logs (nope) or package list. Chrome got into Mint's distros. So my "apt list --installed" output (3mo old desktop load) shows 2028 packages having chosen the "want 3rd party stuff?" install question...so wonderful..so I have both emacsen-common/focal,focal,now 3.0.4 all [installed] and google-chrome-stable/now 91.0.4472.77-1 amd64 [installed,upgradable to: 97.0.4692.71-1] From cmd line, google-chrome (I no longer need on Final side track, I remember years ago saying "amazing...YouTube just works out of box!". Final backtrack...wonder what emacsen-common has, since if I try to launch "emacs" I get Command 'emacs' not found, but can be installed with: sudo apt install e3 # version 1:2.71-2, or sudo apt install emacs-gtk # version 1:26.3+1-1ubuntu2 sudo apt install emacs-lucid # version 1:26.3+1-1ubuntu2 sudo apt install emacs-nox # version 1:26.3+1-1ubuntu2 sudo apt install jove # version 4.17.2.7-1 Pardon my endless rant, hope it doesn't sidetrack today/tonite. Hey Everybody, We've got a meeting this Thursday November 18th, 2021 at 7pm - 8:30pm at the Hudson Public Library! Firstly, a big shout out to Joshua Stone for making the reservation at the Hudson Public Library. Secondly, the meeting will also be online at our usual Jitsi location for people who can't make it in person. https://meet.jit.si/WlugMA The topic we'll be discussing at the meeting is the Intel Management Engine technology buried in every Intel CPU. This technology includes a version of Minix running on a separate core inside your CPU you don't control. Moreover, with the right software, changes to your machine can be made remotely, even when the system is powered off (but connected to power). As with all this stuff, of course since the whole thing is cooked into the firmware, it's full of security flaws, etc.. We'll talk about those flaws and how to disable it! We'll also likely touch on the Tesla Dojo D1 processing unit. They've made some claims that I've posted to the mailing list. Logan did some digging and it turns out their claims are not as blow your mind as would be first interpreted. The Hudson Public Library does allow food and drink, so I will bring the usual pretzels and snacks. Afterwards we will be going to Rail Trail Flatbread <https://railtrailflatbread.com/>for dinner. Use same hostname internally and externally

All, To quickly summarize my problem/question, I’d like to host a nextcloud server at my house and be able to access it with the same hostname whether I’m home or away. I own a domain, let’s call it example.com. Its main DNS record points to a node at digital oceans. However I’d like to host a sub-domain at my house, let’s call it home.example.com. Currently home.example.com resolves to a routable IP address at my house. - When I’m on the road, I’d like to be able to connect to https://home.example.come - When I’m home, I’d like to be able to connect to https://home.example.com. The above works on a well-behaved desktop receiving dns servers via dhcp. Specifically, I have setup local dns to resolve home.example.com to 192.168.1.1. Searching this topic has taught me that this method is called Split-DNS. However android and iOS do not appear to honer my local dns server — I’m not sure why — so they resolve the address to a routable IP and connect from within the private 192.168.1.0 subnet. My firewall sees this and drops it b/c it is a non-routable IP address connecting to the external interface. (I got this info by running tcpdump and watching traffic). Has anyone attempted something similar? Is there something I’m overlooking? (Probably) My goal is to not do special configurations on enduser devices. Thanks, — brad

Thrust is an old C64 game. I never played the original but enjoyed an svgalib version a long time ago. Svgalib was used for games when people didn't have machines that could reasonably run X. It requires root to run and can't run under X so it isn't something people do now for the most part. The version I played now has an X version but it requires pseudo color so it is not usable. I updated the code to use SDL. I replaced some images that seemed to have been copied from the original. I renamed the game to Inertia Blast. Hey all, I've learned that the library in my town is open to the public for hosting club meetings! More info: https://hudsonpubliclibrary.com/ Some of the benefits I can think of for having meetings at the library include: - Free hosting - Free public wifi - Free on-site parking - Low noise levels - Projector and whiteboard are available - Books, music, movies, etc, are available for checking out (https://bark.cwmars.org/eg/opac/home) - Adjacent to many restaurants, most having outdoor seating - Has EV charging stations nearby - Access to well-maintained walking trails and public parks Cons: - Conference room capacity is capped at 10 occupants - Meetings must end 15 minutes before library's closing time, so would have to end at 8:15PM - Many restaurants might be closed by 9PM I could imagine going back to our usual monthly meetings, from 7:00PM to 8:15PM on Thursdays, then walking over to one of the restaurants next door for food and drinks. Hi, I've noted that many of you host your own email and file servers, and I've wanted to do this for several years, but I've been avoiding taking this on myself. This is due to the time investment (to learn tech I don't necessarily want to learn) and the added weight of responsibility for security. Quite frankly, I'm getting lazy in my old age and I'm considering a packaged solution/service like The Helm. I guess my question is, are the tech barriers to setting up a home email server really as formidable as claimed in the below justification from The Helm's web site? If a lazy guy like me sets up an email server, but then doesn't get around to applying security updates for half a year, is he just asking to be hacked? For context, I am a local Charter customer with a standard internet-only subscription. Unfortunately, ISPs in the U.S. block port 25 by default, a practice started in the 90s when home computers were hacked and turned into open relays abused for spamming. Sometimes it’s possible to get this port unblocked, but it’s not uncommon for the ISP to ask for a significantly more expensive class of service in exchange. ISPs also typically assign dynamic IPs to residential internet connections. Large email service providers block residential dynamic IPs en masse also due to the issue raised above. While it’s possible to get a static IP address from your ISP, they will charge for it and potentially require a more expensive class of service. PTR records, or reverse DNS, is also a key requirement for trustworthiness when setting up an email server. Getting this type of record with a residential internet connection can be a significant challenge and may also incur additional costs. To summarize, port blocking, dynamic IPs and challenges in establishing a PTR record all interfere with easily running an email server at home. It can cost hundreds of dollars per year and consist of a significant investment of time with your ISP to get things set up just right. Hey everyone! Thanks for another night full of discussion covering many interesting topics! I'm interested to learn more about everyone's longterm plans for carbon-neutral/carbon-negative living! My wife and I have been researching on this topic for some time as we believe there are numerous benefits in reducing energy requirements, and we hope that when it comes time to become home owners we'll be able to start from the ground up with this type of living ingrained in our household! It turns out that there's a *lot* of room for improvement in energy efficiency, and by extension, carbon reduction. Zeek - from yesterday's meeting

Guys, I'm looking into Zeek and unfortunately I don't have a second ethernet port on my main system, so it's not clear how I'd run a span port off my main switch to grab traffic. What hardware do people recommend for a zeek data collection node? I guess I could spin up my old WRAP board (http://www.pcengines.ch) which I used as my main router for years before I replaced it recently. But it's not super fast. It's got three 1gb ports, and 4gb of RAM with a 1Ghz single core AMD CPU. So it might do the job, esp since I can install Debian Buster on there without too much trouble. Sweet! John

Myself, barely so far. TMI Since a friend (for sister's anniversary) wanted to create a slideshow+music ( MP4, say ) I discovered how easy that is on Linux lately (googling offers ~10 or Top Ten choices of SW). And since I put linux on this friend's desktop, it's a great match and way to teach/learn. (gawd, these life-story-in-pictures quests sure can make a camera-bound picture owner/taker have to cope w their mess of jpegs in cellphone) DRUM ROLL: I only tried one offering for video editing, and scored. .......................chose one that some review(s?) said is most user friendly. It (OpenShot) seems great, for my too-simple needs (slideshow of static pics, adding music/mp3) and can obviously do so much more. Output and input choices have huge lists (eg AVI,MP4 variants,etc for output..... you generate/export to). SO ANOTHER THING i learned doing this is: There's a release/package thing I wasnt aware of ... ....seems a too-easy alternate, in favor of pkgs/release-dependent installs/updates. IT IS CALLED an App Image and it really appears to me to be THIS SIMPLE: a) You download one big file, eg for OpenShot a 130-140mb one-executable file that they name OpenShot-v2.5.1-x86_64.AppImage , you can get from https://www.openshot.org/download/ .....which says......... b) AppImage requires no installation. Just download, make executable, and run. doug> Correct, it doesn't unzip anything, and the one executable "fits all". Wow! I will admit that (on my Mint desktop) the first time I run it (as me/plain-user), the GUI intro/setup dialog/window does ask me Yes/No ? for some question about creating something for?on? the Desktop, and I said YES and I did not get anything added to my ~/Desktop. But who cares? I don't want to join the endian wars. So I'll comment on something else. Stratus did not support Itanium because they follow rather than lead the market. When a replacement for PA-RISC was considered at Stratus we did look at Itanium. I recall studying the FW then called "EFI" around 2003 when I was in the VOS group. For the in-house VOS OS, Stratus would need compilers for PL/I and C and a modified linker to get to Itanium. Stratus never made this investment. What the VOS group did was to port to x86. Today VOS is still a 32-bit OS that runs on Motorola 68K, i860, PA-RISC and x86. This is unlikely to ever change for VOS as the compiler and linker tech leads have left Stratus. For the other three OS's supported by Stratus, Windows, Linux, VMware ESX, outsiders, not Stratus, would or would not be porting their OS to Itanium. (As was the case for amd64). Since the Stratus value add is to take applications coded to run on commodity HW and make the apps highly reliable by running on Stratus HW, Stratus would not move to Itanium until the customers already were developing to that platform. -- One more comment on a different topic: > >I personally play around with ATTiny85 and ATTiny84 MCUs when I get a >chance. Hi all; In Linux I can do software RAID using LVM or with MD (i.e., mdadm) as a basis. I'm currently thinking of a simple mirror of two conventional SATA disks. The machine is being built to do a compute-workload involving examination of many small(ish?) files, and will not be a desktop or a recreational/gaming machine. I don't know anything about the files or how they'll be examined. How would YOU setup a simple mirror in whatever Linux you use? Why do you prefer your selection? Thanks, --MCV.

dd-wrt and vlans

I have been lurking on this list of a long time and have learned much over the years. Now I'm hoping someone can point me to a good resource to understaning vlans. For some reason networking configurations beyond the most basic setups have never been something I really have gotten my head around. Databases are more my thing. I have a Linksys E4200 router that I have flashed with the latest dd-wrt v24-40559_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini. My objective is to setup multiple vlans with multiple SSID's associated with the vlans to segragate my business, home, and iot devices from one another. After trying this tutorial https://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1730493 and reseting the router many times I decided I need to understand how vlans work and how to set them up properly with this setup. I would like to start by understanding the default setup and what role the default bridge br0 plays in that setup and then move on from there. Thanks in advance, Mike

Hey everyone! I've been taking interest in urban planning recently, and figured I'd like to try visualizing street layouts. I'd like to mock up roads, parking spaces, intersections, sidewalkes, etc, but I'm not sure where to start. As far as I'm aware, AutoCAD Civil 3D and SketchUp are fairly popular applications in the field, but I'm interested in something that's FOSS. Does anyone have suggestions? Web server & gallery & auto-backup

I'm looking for a replacement for Google Photos. I've gotten used to my mobile devices automatically backing up my photos to the cloud and then being able to share a link to those photos in places that have limited storage, such as free Slacks. I finally got off my butt and got my phone to backup photos to my Plex server, but I can't share a link to those photos on Slack. Also, the Plex app seems to be crashing on my tablet, but I haven't tried to troubleshoot that yet. I guess that means I should set up a web server. I don't see myself maintaining a full website; I mostly just want to archive and share my pictures. I'm running Debian. What specific packages do you guys like? -- Rich

PLEX

I played around with the PLEX "app" the other day, I downloaded it from the Ubuntu Software Center, and a PLEX app onto my Roku. I had a movie file that I placed in a designated folder and could easily watch it on the TV through Roku. I seems like a very slick (works well, easy to use) system. My question to you all is, can anyone tell me about the privacy factors? Looking on line gives me conflicting information. Does running PLEX on my PC give that company potential access to anything on my PC? Ron

Charter internet - lots of drops for others?

Hi all, Has anyone else with Charter/Spectrum noticed that they're seeing alot more short 2-5 minute outages with Spectrum? Basically it all drops, then a few minutes on my router (OPNsense 20.7.<latest> running on a PCengines.sh APU4d4) I get the exact same IP address renewed via DHCP. It's really really sucky and impacts the kids and myself working from home. Tried all kinds of things, but the damn thing keeps crapping out randomly. I need to get them to look at this, but even with their automated system, and hacving them reset the Cable Modem remotely, it still fails randomly. Cheers, John

I recently got a Dell notebook/laptop. It is smaller than a typical lap top (notebook?) and is very light in weight. The hard drive is only 28 GB ! It currently runs Windows 10 and has only 4 GB of free space on the hard drive. It seems to just hang, if I try to update the Windows 10. I am thinking of attempting to install Xubuntu to see if it runs. Tried Puppy Linux (a light weight distro) before and think I'd like to go differently. I got the machine for free so will not be disappointed if this goes nowhere. If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears. (I might try to do this install tonight) Ron

Generic VGA Driver (or other VGA driver)

Dear WLUG Members, Below is a question that I posted on Ask Ubuntu 8 days ago. I have received no replies, so I am now asking whether any of you might be able to help. BTW, in addition to the Diamond Stealth card, I also have a PCI Mach64 VGA card made by ATI and a PCI VGA card made by STB Systems. The STB one has a big chip made by S3 and a PROM (I think) labeled "NITRO 3D/GX EDO 1.0". Those have essentially the same problem. ************** I have added to my system a very old Diamond Stealth PCI VGA video card. That card can talk to the BIOS and display correctly on a VGA monitor (provided that I tell the BIOS that my primary graphics card is PCI-E not PCI), but it does not work in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. I think I need a generic VGA driver. Here is some info from lshw: *-display UNCLAIMED description: VGA compatible controller product: 2000PV [Stingray] vendor: ARK Logic Inc physical id: 5 bus info: pci@0000:03:05.0 version: 00 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: vga_controller configuration: latency=0 resources: memory:fdc00000-fdffffff memory:febf0000-febfffff Also, here is what happens when I try to install fglrx: sudo apt-get install fglrx Reading package lists... vagrant on debian 10 (buster) server

Guys, Has anyone played with vagrant on Debian Buster using libvirt as the provider? I can do a 'vagrant up' of a CentOS8 box, but it never finishes since it says it's just waiting for a network. But I have a virbr1 running with 192.168.121.0/24 subnet, and I can ping the new vagrant box at 192.168.121.18 without a problem. I can even fire up a VNC viewer and connect to the console and see that it's up and it's gotten an IP address. All I'm doing is: mkdir /scatch/vagrant vagrant box add centos/7 --provider=libvirt vagrant box add centos/8 --provider=libvirt cd /scratch/vagrant mkdir centos8 cd centos8 vagrant init centos/8 vagrant up I've got dnsmasq running on my server, and it looks to be giving out IPs on that subnet properly. Stupid VM just sits at: root@quad:/scratch/vagrant/centos8# vagrant reload ==> default: Halting domain... ==> default: Starting domain. ==> default: Waiting for domain to get an IP address... And then nothing. The console is fine, I can VNC into it and login as the root user with the password of 'vagrant' and see that the network is up, etc. Going nuts trying to make this work. John

Simple Disc Room

What is this you ask? Disc Room is a new game coming out (closed source). I stumbled on the Disc Room Game Jam to promote the game. A game jam is sort of a contest. You have a short period of time 24 hour up to generally a month to develop a game. They generally have a theme you need to incorporate and possibly other restrictions. They may or may not have a prize or even judging. Disc Room Game Jam wants people to develop disc room like in their game. They released a simple disc room written in Game Maker, a closed source game development program. I decided to use the time to learn Godot, an open source game development program. I recreated their sample with only slight changes. The version on my web site doesn't have the update with sounds at the moment. SBC Options for Network Router

Hi Folks, I would like to build my own network router/gateway and I would like some feedback regarding options. I would like to separate the WIFI from the router. I plan on buying multiple Wireless Access Points to handle WIFI within the house and WIFI in the back yard. The backyard WAP will be powered over Ethernet. Also I want a router distribution that give me lots of flexibility in what I can install and is kept up to date with regard to security. It looks like my choices for distributions are dd-wrt, openwrt, and tomahto (tomato). Any thoughts? So far the only hardware option that I have encountered is Seeed Studio's ODYSSEY – X86J4105. It comes with a case and a power supply. Ubuntu update question

Hello everyone. Thank again for all the recent advice. I have one question. I installed Ubuntu (from a 20.04 flash drive I did a while back) and checked the option to download additional software. It was then up and running. I then had updates available. They were installing, and then the computer said a restart was needed. I clicked restart and rather than restart as expected it went to what I think was a grub menu. Ubuntu was highlighted, I hit the enter key. It said "unpacking failed" (forget if before or after) and started up. Everything seems to be fine, but I am sending this email in case if anyone knows if I will have problems. I tried googling "Ubuntu unpacking failed" and se references to initramfs, but can't say if my message said this. It flashed quickly. I'm confused on what I read there anyway. FYI on the bios to make things work I changed: PTT to off Secure Boot Enable to off Changed RAID to AHCHI The machine seems blazing fast compared to the previous one. Materials much more cheaply made, though. Surprised me that there was no Windows CD or label with license number. cheers Ron

Sorry everyone. We had more spam problems on the WLUG Mailing List last night, and in the process of trying to remove that user I accidentally removed everyone. I partly blame the poor Admin user interface of Postorius--it has a "Unsubscribe All" button at the top of the Member list even if that list has been filtered and says "List Members (1)" due to the filter. So it is easy to misinterpret "All" as being just the Members that are currently listed due to the filter. I went through a backup of the member list I have from 2018, edited the list based on all the subscription/remove requests since then, and resubscribed everyone who hadn't removed themselves since. I could have missed some email addresses, so I apologize if you have been accidentally resubscribed when you shouldn't have been--feel free to email me directly and I'll fix that. I could have also missed some new subscriptions, so if you know someone who should be subscribed but complains that they are no longer receiving posts, please let them know to resubscribe. I'm not sure if each user's subscription options have been retained, so if you had set no email delivery or digest mode for example, you may have to reconfigure that. Finally, I have configured the mailing list to require moderator approval for new membership requests and posts from all existing members until I know that the member isn't a spammer. Over the next few days I'll be going through the member list and unsetting moderation on "known good" members.

Hi All, I’m considering a move from a traditional (and proprietary) PBX to something open-source that i can manage. I know very little about this, so i’m trying to understand if my goal is even possible. Given that our provider (i.e. gatekeeper) is Comcast, i worry they prevent running self-hosted VOIP boxes. Currently the office has 4 lines supplied by comcast. The comcast cable modem has 4 telephone lines going into a Panasonic PBX, which they dispatch the calls to the POTS phones. I want to replace the Panasonic PBX since its proprietary and requires a call into the phone company to change anything. I have very little knowledge in this area, so i’m wondering if anyone here has had experience in this area. Thanks! - brad

recommended printer/3-in-1 laser B+W for general (Linux and Windows clients)

Hi! Hope this doesnt start a HUGE preference debate, but I'm taking feedback on what some of you already know to be a "solid" not too big laser black+white, flatbed/top scanner+copier (no top sheet feeder please, adds too much space/width) BUT THE PAIN is always in the PRINTER drivers/software, win or linux, in my experience. Honestly, been battling w/PDF's too long, to an old-ish Brother HL-L2395DW 3-in-1 --I'm working mostly on Linux Mint 19 (a deviant ubuntu I highly recommend for ex-win users) --Printing most things OK. IIRC, didnt have to find Linux drivers the hard way. --Printing PDF's gets iffy. LibreOffice sometimes cures my blues; DocumentViewer is probably the worst, "evince" also iffy, etc. Sometimes "Data received"....ends with a silent chirp, sometimes printer panel indicates a quick reject (nothing printed) saying "Out of Memory", BUT REALLY it's not the job == big, I think it must be a nasty runaway/leaky PDF->driver thing, but if I -- copy/email/send the nasty job to a win7 laptop and use AcroRead, USUALLY gets it done. Until today when ALL seemed to fail, I'm ready to cough up a few $hundred for a better beast, with wired ethernet+USB though I suppose it's pointless to avoid wireLESS interface as long as it does wired ethernet. Oh look! Today's impossible job just came out, from where! Losing my mind. Budget: since not color, I could go over $300 or so, where most of the decent ones sit. Been an HP fan for a long time, but things change, and I'm open to other solid models. Thx!

X1 Carbon Gen8 review

Hey all, Since Lenovo has been making announcements about shipping Linux on their machines [1] and expanding on their certifications [2], I decided to purchase an X1 Carbon Gen8 [3] as my newest daily driver. I thought I'd share some thoughts after installing Fedora 32 on it. Chassis: The X1 Carbon has excellent build quality. Despite being an ultrathin laptop, it feels quite solid in my hands and is well-balanced when grasping with one hand. Weighing in at 2.38 lbs, it's much lighter and smaller than my T480 (4.03 lbs) which makes it more ideal for traveling. The laptop doesn't flex or wobble when typing either. Ports: The number of ports is quite good compared to other ultrathin laptops like the Dell XPS 13 and Macbook. Two USB-C ports are available which are its main method of charging (very useful for sharing cables too). There are two also standard USB-A ports, as well as an HDMI port and headphone jack. There isn't native ethernet which is a bit of a disappointment, but fortunately this is mitigated with a dongle that comes with the laptop. There isn't an SD card slot or even a microSD slot either, but the SD card reader dongle I already use with my desktop can be used instead. Monitor: The FHD 400 nit screen is very good. Costa Rica 4K [4] -- which is typically used as a benchmark for demonstrating display quality -- looks quite nice on it. I don't have a colorimeter [5] on hand for measuring the full capabilities of the screen in a more empirical fashion, but it should be capable of showing the full sRGB range as well as covering most of Adobe RGB. The 4K HDR 500 nit configuration should be more ideal if color reproduction and HDR are of utmost importance. Keyboard: Thinkpads are well renowned for their keyboards, and the keyboard on the Carbon is no exception. The keys feel just right to me when typing, not being too mushy or too clicky. They also don't give off much noise, which is very much appreciated when working in a quiet room. Speakers: I'm quite happy with the quality of the Dolby Atmos speakers. Usually laptop speakers are a disappointment to me, but the speakers on the Carbon are more than capable of handling different genres of music. The speaker alignment being upward-facing instead of side-facing as seen in other thinkpads also makes it better for watching videos and listening to music with other people. It does seem a bit lacking in bass-heavy music [6], but the built-in DAC is more than capable of driving a pair of good-quality headphones [7]. I might have to make an update on this later because Dolby Atmos support on Linux appears to be a work in progress and may need a preset to have it more closely match the speaker output on Windows [8] in the meantime. Battery: I can get a decent amount of battery life from the 51Wh battery, usually about 14 hours with light usage and medium screen brightness on stock Fedora. I think I could easily squeeze more battery life out of it if I installed Powertop or TLP, but hopefully battery optimizations land in upstream so no extra work needs to be done by the time Fedora 33 comes out. Noise & thermals: This laptop is quiet! Even when playing 1080p@60fps video in a quiet room, the fan don't make any audible noise. Multi-core workloads like code compiling also don't seem to be an issue on this laptop. Sensors report roughly 70C during such workloads, and the fan gives off a low amount of noise that's well within acceptable range. Performance & Stability: The i7-10510U performs quite well. It appears to be about as fast as the R5 2600X in my desktop at compile tasks, which is especially impressive considering this is in an ultrathin laptop! It also remains responsive for multitasking while compiling, still being able to play fullscreen video in Firefox while dropping a few frames when attempting to switch tabs (considering it's able to sustain full 60fps playback otherwise while most cores are saturated, this is still acceptable). Suspend support on the Carbon is rock solid too. I've repeatedly closed the lid and opened it back up to have it immediately wake up from suspend, making it ideal for keeping around on standby for when I want to look something up. Vendor Support: Almost everything about this laptop works out of the box on Fedora, with one exception being that firmware for the fingerprint sensor is currently still in testing and needs to be explicitly enabled [9] if you want to enable fingerprint login & authentication from Gnome Settings Since I bought the Carbon before Lenovo started offering a configuration with Linux preinstalled, I ended up paying for a Windows license. Lenovo support however was quite understanding of my situation in having no desire to run Windows on it, and provided a refund for the license. I think this is noteworthy since they previously didn't offer a refund when I previously bought my T480 a few years ago. Enabling hardware decoding support for improving CPU usage and battery life [10] is also trivial. Firefox appears to consume 15%-25% CPU during fullscreen 1080p@60fps video playback, and VLC is usually using 8%-15% for the same video. It's worth noting that Firefox's accelerated decoding support is still bleeding-edge and probably has room for optimizations, and I'd imagine VLC could be even more efficient once it has native Wayland support. Conclusion: Overall, I'm very happy with this laptop, both on the software and hardware side. Despite being brand new, the out-of-the-box Linux support has been some of the best I've seen in a long time and the tweaks I've had to do for it were quite minimal. I think once Lenovo sorts out their official Linux support (I still don't see it offered as an OS option in the customization page), they'll have a truly stellar product that they can market to Linux users as a daily driver. Signing a driver for UEFI in Debian

Manjaro - Caffeine Question

I'm looking a bit at Manjaro 20.0, with Gnome, and when I first ran, saw in the top right (system tray?) a coffee cup symbol. I believe that this means that the Caffeine-ng program might have been running. I have not seen the coffee cup symbol since. I tried to click on the Caffeine icon, and also the Caffeine Preferences icon, but seems like nothing happened. I tried searching the Manjaro forums and have not found a solution. Any thoughts? (Sent it to the WLUG, maybe Forrest or another Manjaro user will see it ) Ron

RDP into Win10 with Remmina

I'm getting tired of booting into Windows for work. I figured out how to connect to the VPN from Debian, but it would be very helpful to RDP into the workstation in my office. I know the URL for my workstation, the domain, the username, and the password, but I'm failing to get it to work. What should I try? Remmina says "Connecting to <server>..." for a minute, then fails with "Connection to RDP server <server> failed." -- Rich

Lenovo shipping Linux pre-installed

Hey everyone, Apparently Lenovo is planning on shipping Fedora on their Thinkpad lines, and will use only packages from the official repos instead of custom packages. I think this is great news as somebody who shopped for Thinkpads before and had to contact support about refunding a Windows license (turns out that wasn't possible at the time). Having a distro pre-installed should mean improved hardware compatibility, and maybe even be able contact support for Linux-specific issues. What is the best way to provide proof to an audit person who needs to know all the root/sudo users for a RHEL 6 server? (I am new at this company, and don't have access to all their resources) We can provide the /etc/passwd & /etc/sudoers file (the auditor may not know how to read these files) We also have the RedHat Identity Management running here, but I am not familiar with this tool. April WLUG virtual meeting was a resounding success!

Hey Everybody, I just wanted to give a shout out to everybody who showed up to the virtual meeting last night. It was cool to see Maddog show up, I'm glad he's staying safe and healthy. Yeah, there were a couple of audio/video hiccups, but I thought overall it went great. I shared my screen a couple of times and that worked just fine as well. One cool thing that was brought up doing the meeting and I thought was worth talking about is "vscodium" which is a 100% open source recompile of the visual studio code editor. The big difference is that the vscode as shipped from microsoft contains telemetry tracking data that gets sent back to the mothership... https://vscodium.com/ solves that problem. We obviously jibber jabbed about COVID19 and folding@home and Logan showed off the facemasks he's been printing as well as the antennae he's building to contact a long lost satellite in geostationary orbit. While it wasn't the same as a physical meeting, when we do manage to get ourselves all back in the same room, I think it's something we'll definitely incorporate into the physical meetings. ansible layout thoughts

Guys, I'm starting to work on deplying ansible at $WORK to start managing a bunch of existing servers. The goal is to A) get them consistent, B) learn ansible, and C) automate deployments so if I get hit by a bus, they can have a hope of keeping things going. So my first thoughts are about organization. Ansible is a file/directory heavy setup. And I understand how a task has one or more roles. And then a playbook can have one or more tasks. But it's how to manage the overall site or bundles of playbooks that I want to understand. I've looked at: https://docs.ansible.com/ansible/latest/user_guide/playbooks_best_practices… and I think I can deal with the first layout suggestion, but I'd porbably put playbooks into a playbooks/ directory. But... how to keep them organized as my collection grows. Do I want a new directory structure for each group of playbooks? For example I want to do: - add ssh-keys for logins - make sure right repo(s) are configured - ntp client config - postfix config - NIS config - fstab config - nsswitch.conf config So ideally all of the above would be a playbook each, since for example ntp config, would/could include: - install ntp - install default client config - restart ntpd once configured - etc... Where it all comes down to is keeping all this organized nicely, especially as it grows ever more complicated. All the silly examples of setting up a LAMP stack completely gloss over the actual pushing of content, which is really what we want to do. So, thoughts? Real life experience? Suggestions for good training classes? Unfortunately it would have to be online now, not my preferred in-person training.... John

Haven't used it for a rather long time now, so I dunno if these still even exist, but mIRC I think was the last I used (before that Pirch rings a bell). GRUB failure

The other day, my computer crashed to a blank, black screen. On reboot, my BIOS didn't see the SSD that held my OS. I tried swapping the SSD onto different cables and different motherboard connectors. When I started the computer back up, it saw the SSD, but gave me a GRUB rescue prompt. On the next reboot, the BIOS again didn't see the SSD. That's repeatable: warm boots make the SSD disappear; it re-appears on cold boots, but dumps me to the GRUB rescue prompt. I figured the SSD has died and I already requested an RMA, but I can't boot to my Windows drive if I remove the SSD, so maybe it's not actually dead. I don't have the patience to troubleshoot from the GRUB rescue prompt and I wasn't thrilled with Manjaro, so I'm going to try to install good, old Debian to the SSD while I wait to hear back about an RMA. -- Rich

I've got some updates and ideas for the upcoming meetings! I've reached out to Daniel Moghimi about doing a talk regarding his work on the various security issues he's found in modern CPUs. He's agreed to speak either March or April. I'll work to finalize the details with him. I'm definitely interested in doing a Keysigning party, we'll just have to work out the logistics and what additional presentations that we'd like to go along with it. I know a while a go Eric Martin showed off a cool keyfob that had his key stored in it. I recently stumbled across a cool technology called "Node Red" which people are using to do automation stuff with IoT and MTQQ. https://www.nodered.org It allows you to create flows using their graphing engine. Another piece of software that people might find interesting is subsonic <http://www.subsonic.org/>. It lets you run your own music streaming service. This way you're not subjected to whatever algorithm spotify / pandora / etc wants to subject you to! I recently helped a buddy build a home nas to run it and it's pretty damn slick. He's going to giving a talk about a couple of cool technologies in Fedora! Josh provided me some details about these innovations so I've mashed them up and included them below. Silverblue: https://fedoramagazine.org/what-is-silverblue/ Toolbox: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/fedora-silverblue/toolbox/ Flatpaks: https://flatpak.org/ *Silverblue* s a Fedora variant designed around immutability where a new system image is committed as the new /sysroot without affecting the state of the running system. This is reminiscent of Android A/B updates, although the update backend -- ostree -- has elements of a version control system like git. *Toolbox* is also interesting as it lets you switch into an unprivileged development environment that can be built up and torn down without affecting the host as tools are installed inside a container. *Flatpak* uses the same file storage backend as Silverblue to manage apps and shared runtimes. This app distribution technology allows you to decouple apps and operating systems as everything is built and run inside a sandbox, making upgrades easier. Compare needing only one version of an app to package as a flatpak, versus packaging for different versions. CAD /3D printing

Somewhat off-topic for this list, but we often discuss 3D printing... I'm sitting in a SolidWorks user group meeting. The presenter mentioned that Windows 10 includes a 3D paint program (or maybe it's a 3D mode in the regular paint program). You can paint in there and import the files into SolidWorks for further editing. He also mentioned that he thinks 3MF files will replace STL because they carry more data.

The future of WLUG

Hey all, Last night's meeting was excellent, and I'd like say thanks again to Tim for giving me a ride home! Last night's discussion gave me ideas of ways we could improve general activity, increase attendence, and improve outreach efforts. Hosting a meetup.com group would be certainly improve discoverability, and getting in touch with WPI's computer science group would be great too. I think what a lot communities are doing nowadays is having a text chat format for users who want to communicate more easily over the internet, especially with mobile devices. As an example, there are Discord servers for Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, etc, and they have room sizes generally in the hundreds or even well over a thousand. Even before Discord they'd use IRC for providing support, posting updates, etc. Having a text chat of our own would certainly help improve participation -- I think Matrix would be a good option here because it has many nice features and has a fairly polished user experience: - Numerous clients available on desktop, mobile, and web ( https://matrix.org/clients/) - Persistent chat history - Link previews - Various bots to choose from for adding functionality ( https://matrix.org/docs/projects/bots/) - User moderation - Server federation - Self-hosting available, both client and server are completely FOSS - File sharing - Voice/video calls I have a screenshot if anyone wants to see what a Matrix chat room would look like: https://i.imgur.com/aVILcWB.png Or you can join the room I made: https://matrix.to/#/!EiTljkvagZDFKfQfFu:matrix.org?via=matrix.org Alteratively, if you have a Matrix client already: #wlug:matrix.org Any thoughts? -Josh

Improving WLUG outreach

Hey all, I thought I'd like to continue the topic about what we could do to increase attendance meeting. I think working with the community at WPI would be a great thing for us, so long as we try to understand more about the student culture. I've learned that one of the most important things about WPI is that a sense of community and working toward a greater goal are included as part of the curriculum. One of the earliest classes a WPI student takes involves thinking about the biggest problems impacting the world and makes strides to tackling such problems head-on. https://www.wpi.edu/project-based-learning/wpi-plan/10-things-to-know I believe WPI also has a strong background in bioinformatics, and that's a field that can surely benefit from FOSS as we want to encourage openness and ethics when being on the forefront of scientific research that could have sweeping societal impact. The last thing we need is more companies like 23andMe hoarding genetic data for profit. Perhaps WLUG can do more to be involved in such things, emphasizing the importance of "ethical" computing with the problems of DRM, spying/tracking, proprietary software and data formats, software patents, and licenses that lock away data that the community could benefit from. Essentially we could give people more of an opportunity to think about the social aspects and ramifications of technology, and can use that as a framework for creating a better future. These are still ideas I'm throwing at the wall, hopefully something sticks! -Josh

Hi, I'm Lexi! I've not been to a WLUG meeting since ... since a long time .... I remember a Blender talk, and a Maddog talk - and these look like circa 2003/2004.... So, absent a long time! Anyways. I am trying to find the time to come again. I've been a casual Linux user since 1998, when I installed Debian from a pile of floppies (( or should I say, my friend installed it for me, and my learning journey began )) .... and for a long time I was an exclusive user .... and at heart I think I am still - even as I flog along a 10 year old iMac. But for a couple years now, on my laptop I've been running 'Tiny Core Linux' , which if you're unfamiliar with it, it is based on the Linux From Scratch work, with an emphasis on a 'tiny' footprint. Needed additional software are mounted into ram from squashfs archives, on the fly. It is quirky, but I like it. I wondered if anyone else has used it (or uses it). I didn't feel right just asking blindly, without a vague reintroduction of myself. So - question: Anyone else use, now or previously, the Tiny Core Linux Distribution? STM8 blue pill boards and programmer

Guys, I've got some STM8 bluepill boards and a spare knock off ST-Linkv2 programmer if anyone is interested. I was playing around with them this weekend and the lack of a decent IR Library meant that my interest has waned. They're cheap cheap chear, and interesting as a way to learn more low level programming. I can give you my linux notes if you like too! Or if you know of a library for STM8 that does both send/receive of IR codes, I'd love to hear about it. I'd trade for an AVR ISP programmer instead if anyone has one, since I'm now more interested in ATtiny 85/84/88/841 boards these days. I won't be able to make meetings (unless maybe if you have one the 16th of this January) for a while though, so we'd have to arrange a meetup or something. Cheers! John

Anyone have a wireless networking card or computer with wireless networking they would be willing to donate to the cub scouts? For last years pinewood derby we used DerbyNet ( https://jeffpiazza.github.io/derbynet/) It was great. We want to step it up a bit this year. I'd like to have a computer running the software and tablets connecting wirelessly to register cars. This way we can take pictures of every car as they are registered. Encrypted Sorna Reviewer CD files

I picked up a copy of some x-rays and MRIs. They're on a CD, encrypted, with Windows viewer software. Has anyone figured out how to view these in Linux? I have the password to decrypt, I just don't know what software to use (without resorting to Windows). I think it may actually be a DICOM file format. Plex media drive mount point

I blew away my Linux Mint installation today and installed Manjaro. All my media for my Plex server was on a separate drive that was mounted at /Media. Now it's at /run/media/richspk/Media/, and Plex can't see anything below richspk. My /etc/fstab is much more spartan than I'd expected. sda is a Windows install, sdb is media, and sdc is the Manjaro install. Should I add /Media (sdb) to /etc/fstab, or should I mount it some other way? Hey everyone, I'd just like to say I had a fun time at Thursday's meeting! I'm already looking forward to the next meeting as I'm sure there are plenty of interesting topics we could discuss. As mentioned before, I think we could examine technologies that'd be beneficial to Linux on the desktop, like comparing packaging technologies including Flatpak, Snap, and AppImage. I think we could also look into the future of containers on the desktop as a whole with projects like Flatpak, toolbox, podman, and Silverblue. My workflow over the past few years has been using these upcoming technologies as daily drivers as they lead to saner development. For example, my laptop runs Silverblue ( https://fedoramagazine.org/what-is-silverblue/) which is a Fedora variant designed around immutability where a new system image is committed as the new /sysroot without affecting the state of the running system. Photo Frames

Hi all, I'm looking for a photo frame for the family. I *hate* the model where you have to email/upload photos to some site so they can curate them. I do like the idea of a touch screen, so you can scroll back if you see a photo you like. I'd like a nice display, with subtle cropping if needed of images. I've looked on Aamzon.com, but got lost in the weeds, and I've also looked at "The Wirecutter" but the review is a bit old and not really too useful. But maybe I'm too harsh on the upload model, but how many times have I seen companies get bought out and shutdown? Especially for something like this which will probably be around for ages. So my vague requirements: 1. local photo storage 2. touch screen control 3. automatic dimming/brightening and ideally power off when no one is around. 4. 10" in size approx. 5. IPS display for the widest possible angles and best colors. 6. High Resolution display. 7. If it has Wifi for remote photo adding, I want them to download to the frame, so that if the Wifi goes out, it's not a problem. And I really hate small remotes that get lost. I'm torn though, because I'd like to give one to my Dad who doesn't live near me so I can easily send pictures... but I hate the idea of remote sites which can and do go away without warning. But what really gets me is the controls on the back, useless! I'd like it to look like a photo frame, but *some* controles so I can swipe through photos easily. Sorta like a big cell phone. I've looked at the reviews on: tomsguide.com reviewlab.com thewirecutter.com I'm really tepted by the "PhotoSpring 10-inch Digital Frame" for the touchscreen options, but strongly dislike that there's no local storage, you have to upload to the cloud. "Nix Advance 8-Inch Digital Photo Frame" doesn't have Wifi, and uses a remote. So I like that it's not cloud based... but for remote family members it won't work as well. And probably a bit small. Totally annoying, but I'm sure I'll just have to settle for something. THanks, John

As usual at WLUG, we went off on a tangent and it was amazing.. What started out as a side conversation about storage technologies turned into 1.5 hour conversation about LVM / ZFS on Linux / Ceph / GlusterFS / Synology / FreeNAS / NetAPP and the general philosophies around managing scalable storage at home and in the enterprise! Becoming a brick-and-mortar Linux vendor

Hey everyone, I'm sure we all know how successful Linux is across different markets today, but I've been wondering about with Linux as a desktop platform if one were to run a business around selling machines that're built with it in mind. The market for online retailers selling devices shipping Linux already seems diverse enough, but I don't know of any successful brick-and- mortar stores selling these devices. I think there could be some advantages to this, including: - Spreading awareness about Linux and the FOSS community - Providing on-site troubleshooting and consultation - Demonstrating different form factors such as Raspberry Pi, Steam OS machines, workstation etc - Providing a physical location for workshops, LUGs, and other meetups - Having a one-stop shop for hardware that's already known to work on Linux such as USB DACs, wifi adapters, etc - Generally act as a community center for computer enthusiasts - Partnering with pre-existing online vendors so customers can test their hardware in-store Jumping into a business such as this does sound risky though, seeing as the Linux crowd is generally very hands-on about computers they purchase and are willing to fix problems on their own. There are also many hurdles that the ecosystem has to catch up on in order to be competitive with applications found only on Windows and/or macOS. That being said, I think I'm still curious to see how much interest there would be in selling a platform around desktop Linux in a brick-and- mortar store with an experience similar to Microsoft and Apple stores. It would certainly help for attracting new users with a more integrated approach that we've come to expect from other platforms, and I think we're in a pretty good position these days for seeing growth. I'd also like to say that I have no experience in marketing, so I wouldn't know where to start with doing anything like market research or studies, so I'm eager to hear any suggestions for how to gauge the potential for a business idea such as this. I know that a few of us have tinkered with and enjoy using OpenSCAD. However, for many users the learning curve is REALLY steep and this steep learning curve has kept many users away from programmatic shape generation for 3d modeling. Basically writing code to generate a shape. At our last meeting Frank Sweetser showed off something really cool, which is that Tinkercad has now integrated a "scratch" like language into Tinkercad. At this meeting someone will be giving a demo of this. I think we would be remiss if we didn't talk about exFAT and Microsoft's decision to open the patents on it. It *sounds* like we may have exFAT becoming a first class citizen on linux. Is this Microsoft playing some long game of embrace, extend, extinguish or are we moving towards some wild convergence point? In that is the interesting conversation where we think linux will be in another ten years and for that matter Microsoft. Comparing distro packages

I wanted to know if OpenAlchemist is included in Debian. During my searching I found distrowatch has the ability to compare packages from distributions. I pull up Fedora and Debian. https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=compare-packages&firstlist=fedor… Fedora's list of packages doesn't include OpenAlchemist. Nor does it include shippy, ostrichriders, and btbuilder. Clearly this isn't a complete list. Am I doing something wrong on distrowatch? Is there a different way to do the same thing?

Dual GPU Laptops Experience?

I bought my last laptop from System 76. It's worked well but I was thinking of upgrading. I run Fedora so I wiped the Ubuntu installed by System 76 and haven't had any problems. However my current laptop only has the Intel graphics. The new Gazelle, which is closest to what I have, includes Intel and Nvidia. Anybody have any experience with that setup with Fedora and Wayland? Does it work out of the box? Do you need to install System 76 tools to switch between the different chips? Does Nvidia with Nouveau driver give better performance over Intel? Setting up new monitor

I picked up a free monitor today, a Samsung S24C230L. The native resolution is 1920x1080, and it's connected via DVI. The existing monitor has a native resolution of 1680x1050 and is plugged into the analog VGA port. The NVIDIA X Server Settings seem to agree, so what's up with the display on the second monitor? https://photos.app.goo.gl/M1R9MQnDMCaD7qca6 When I try saving the X Configuration File, it warns me that I should use relative positioning for the second display, instead of absolute positioning. Maybe that's the problem, but I can't find that setting anywhere. Got any ideas? -- Rich

PCSX2

Before the meeting on games, I tested pcsx2 thinking maybe I could show it. However, it was removed from rpmfusion in Fedora 30. PCSX2 is playstation 2 emulator. I have a working PS2 but the He-Man game was only released in Europe and it is region locked. The emulator finally allowed me to try the game. Since I didn't like losing that ability I've rebuilt the pcsx2 package for Fedora 30. http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/lzma-libs-4.32.7-21.fc30.i686.rpm http://identicalsoftware.com/dulsi/pcsx2-1.4-11.fc30.i686.rpm The src rpms are exactly the same as the files from fedora and rpmfusion. I cheated a bit in compiling the pcsx2 package. It had some errors with system headers files. Rather than create a patch to make it compile, I hacked the system header files. (It was a throw away VM because pcsx2 can't compile in 64 bit.) struggling w/ reliable printers on CUPS in small office

WLug-gers, tl;dr: Can someone recommend a printer (or printer brand) that is reliable for printing via CUPS? I’m struggling w/ printers in a small office and i've struggled to get any kind of guidance on-line. The volume of pages printed at the office is probably around 100 pages a day and there are 4 printers — all HPs and all consumer grade — each printer has its purpose, e.g. there's an 11x17 printer, one color laser, one BW laster, one color inkjet. The office is all iMACs, which connect to a Linux CUPS server. The iMacs were networking directly w/ the printers, but i added the CUPS server to try to mitigate the poor reliability with only marginal results. Routinely printers become “paused” in CUPS so i need to go in and ‘unpause’ them, also some printers just fall of the network entirely. Inevitably the only printer that works most of the time is the ink-jet which is a lot more expensive to re-fill. I’m looking for a reliable solution. If anyone has a recomendation that’d be great! If you’ve watched any online content creators in the past couple of years, you’ve likely seen the software in action. In this talk, I’ll be giving an overview of what the software can do, as well as a case study on how OBS helped rocket a simple clementine to the top of the WPI subreddit. Arcade Machine Problem

My son's cub scout den put together an arcade machine for the Build It pin. It worked great. Then the day of the Blue & Gold where we were demoing it, it didn't work. I ended up using my laptop instead of the intended machine. I have now set it up four times on three computers and have discovered the cause of the problem. The machine is running Fedora. It has only one user and he automatically logs in. It is running wayland. Gnome is configured to automatically start EmulationStation. From there you can launch Ostrich Riders or Super Tux Kart. (I wanted only open source games with two players simultaneous preferably cooperative but more games can be put on.) The problem occurs if the machine does not have a mouse plugged in. EmulationStation starts normally but launching either game brings up the login screen. Hey Gang, We've got a WLUG meeting on the 14th of March Location: WPI Student Center Mid Century Room (rm 331) Time: 7pm I've got a couple ideas for topics. 1. Snaps / flatpacks / appimage. These are entirely encapsulated applications that'll run on a variety of linux distributions. My new laptop runs snaps using snapd. This is just one of a bunch of new technologies for distributing software without having it tied to the machines glibc and underlying libraries. 2. Microsoft and its complicated relationship with the OSS community. Are we moving towards a dystopian future of locked and signed bootloaders? Where your only option is to run Windows 10 with the linux subsystem. Has google essentially done the same thing with Chromebook's and ChromeOS and Android? If someone has a topic that they're dying to do, let me know. As usual refreshments and snacks will be provided and afterwards we'll head off for dinner to continue the conversation. (text-based mp3 player) Anyone use mpg321/mpg123 ?

Not trying to prove I'm the biggest dinosaur in the zoo, but I do like TEXT windows ("Terminal",etc) and to play my saved/local mp3 files, mpg123 floats my boat ....especially to random-play-everything-from-a-file-list", or just " cd ArtistDeJour ; mpg123 * */* " or such. mpg321 is not in base Mint (nor other release's base generally) pkg list, but Mint base+3rdparty DID grab everything else it / mpg321 needed. ( pardon confusion, 321 vs 123 = all the same, if you apt-get or otherwise get "mpg321" you get the "mpg123" command.) I had it working on CentOS, with full features usable mid-stream, ( "h" would display a menu of commands like " 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0" would jump to 10,20,.....90% portions of the track) and so on. but I dumped CentOS on my fileserver-with-sound, replaced with Mint 19.1 (which BTW solved a firefox-hangs-my-box issue) and I lost the interactive features. e.g. "h" does nothing at the moment, and when I run mpg123 I don't see the "type h for help" output I used to get. So it's just not enabled! Anyone else use this? -doug p.s. whatever Remote Control option is, that's not what the trick needed, though I don't understand it. (I stared at the args/Options below until believing I didnt need any of these flags to use the cmds listed ) But what i CAN'T show at the moment is what the interactive cmds (which "h" will list, normally) are (were until I upgraded).
