Kernel int-13 interface?

Hey, this one goes out to all you kernel hackers out there. After 4 years, I've once again become interested in installing Linux on my HP OmniBook 300. Because it's an aswesome computer, and I think DOS 5 is a complete waste of its skill. [Background. The OB300 is a vintage 386-20, with a passive reflective 640x480 LCD display. Basically an oversize TI calculator running DOS] Anyway, from my first tests, I discovered that I can indeed boot the kernel using loadlin. But it immediately freaks out because it can't read (or even think about) my primary media... solid-state PCMCIA flash cards. Now, I briefly tried looking up some data on the OB300's PCMCIA chipset (I think the first standard was still being developed when this computer was made) and quickly decided that wasn't the route to go. And HP told me to go to hell when I asked. But DOS seems to work just fine using the int 13 interface to access the flash disks. So now my question... can I do that in Linux? I don't see any block device support (and most people would agree an int 13 block device would be stupid), but I think I can write one myself. All it would have to do is make the switch into real mode, call the int 13 interface, and then come back. Will Linux tolerate that? As far as I know, many drivers use a real mode interrupt on laptops to trigger their power saving capabilities (suspend, etc...), so I suspect it would be okay. Can anyone stop me before I go too far? Or should I go ahead and write this thing? -Chuck

USB Support in Linux 2.4.18

How can I tell if a specific USB device, in this case a removable USB hard drive, is supported by my kernel? I know that Linux 2.4.18 has "support" for USB devices. Does this mean all USB devices or just a few? I would think that the OS talks to the USB controller via a series of well documented commands and that its up to the controller to talk to the specific USB device. Does this make sense, or is there more to it? Thanks, Chuck

dhcp clients

Hi All, I got my home network rigged up to do dynamic dns with dhcp. It seems that the linux and fBSD dhcp clients don't send the hostname to the dhcp server, so no name record is created for those clients. Does anyone know how to do this? (windows clients seem to send the hostname okay). Thanks, --brad

Wireless antennas

HI gang, I have discovered that there are a couple of locations in my house where the wireless network does not work well at all. Naturally, they are the locations where I most want to use my laptop. My access point is on the 2nd floor in approx. the middle of that floor. I'm trying to use the laptop on the 1st floor at one end of the house to (almost) no avail. Moving the access point to other locations in the room seems to make little difference. My house is not a mansion - I'm well within the 300 ft alleged range. My 2.4 GHz wireless phones have no problem over this particular path through the house (and yes, I turned them off in case they were causing interference). I have been looking at these add-on antennas that are available on the Internet. It appears that some are passive while others are active. Issues with aic7770?

Has anybody done a Red Hat 7.3 install on a box with an Adaptec 7770 card in it? The machine was running *cough* the server version 4.0 of an OS that rhymes with "Empty" and working fine. However, when boot off the CD due to our buddy "El Torito" and INT13. The bios is able to get the diskette image but then unable to find the CD. I've got a ftp site with RH 7.3 so I point to it and everything works fine until I have to specify which driver I'd like to use for the scsi card. When I specify the Adaptec 7xxx series driver, the kernel issues an "Opps" and continues on. This machine is a 100mhz pentium HP Netserver. (yeah, I know its slow... I plan on using it as a standalone JBOD) Thanks, Tim.

NFS, anyone?

Hi, I have a server running Mandrake 8.2. I had a problem unmounting a CDROM (I hate supermount!), so I rebooted the server. On the way back up, the NFS service hung. This is now the second time this has happened. (The first time, I attributed it to students messing with the server, and reinstalled everything.) Now, after two days of getting things back to normal, it's happened again, this time sans students. I'm writing this from home, as the school's link to the Internet is down. Anyone know where the relevant state data for NFS is stashed? Thanks, Skip

Pascal madness?

Just putting the finishing touches on my first gentoo linux installation. Took between 15 and 20 hours on a Dual PPro, it might have gone quicker, but the boot-cd's kernel doesn't support SMP. It's a pretty neat distro. James (Thanks to John)

Hi Everybody, Although I have not yet updated the WLUG website, the WLUG BBQ is going to happen! The BBQ will be held in Shrewsbury at Doug Waud's house like it was 2 years ago. The BBQ will start around 6 PM and go until Doug kicks us out (watch it, he has Steve as his bouncer). If you can't make it at 6 PM, show up whenever you can. Wireless networking with LInksys WAP11 and WPC11

HI all, I finally got WEP to work with this hardware ! The trick is to download the firmware update to the WAP11 wireless access point and install it. The firmware version is 1.01c and it came out just a few days ago. Now, of course, the install program only runs in Windows. I inquired about non-Windows solutions. One can use tftp to transfer the binary image to the WAP11 to do the firmware upgrade and it does work! One must first disable the WAP11 password and also disable the MAC address filter. Of course, this is totally non-supported, we support windows only, we're sorry for your inconvenience, yada, yada, yada. I'm using the orinoco{_cs} driver without problems. I tried wlan-ng but could not get it to work at all. The configuration of wlan-ng is quite confusing to me. I recently switched to mozilla 1.0, and I'm having problems getting pine to understand that I want to use mozilla as my URL viewer. In the pine setup, I set the URL viewer to a perl script that I wrote that then runs mozilla. (The script works fine when I run it separately.) When I view a URL in pine, I end up with the KDE browser. The output of "ps" shows that pine is running /usr/bin/htmlview instead of my perl script. Any idea why pine is ignoring my setup? TIA, Bill

booting off cd/floppy images

Hi All, I have an intersting problem. I have a device (my old iopener) with linux installed and freeBSD (i dual boot). Both installs are really out of date, and i want to re-install linux, but i don't have a cdrom drive, or floppy drive. I only have network connection. Is there a way to add an entry in lilo to boot off a CD image, or floppy image? If anyone sees another way to install linux, i'm all hears. Thanks, --brad

Wireless question about WEP

Hi all, I got 64 bit encryption between my laptop and my access point working but there is a problem. The password is OK, and I can ping from my laptop to my network with 64-bit WEP enabled. Others on my network can ping the laptop without any problems. The trouble arises when I try to use the link for something useful, like surfing the web. Web pages come over very slowly if they complete at all. On a wired system, the page comes over quickly, so its not the other end of the Internet causing the problem. If I turn off WEP, everything is great. Also, I seem totally unable to make 128 or 256 bit encryption work at all (not even a successful ping) despite the fact that both sides agree on the password. What should I check? I am using the orinoco_cs driver in the 2.4.18 kernel. How to set "-dpi 100" for X with kdm

HI all, When I start my SuSE 8.0 system in run level 3, it comes up in textmode. I log in and issue the startx command and KDE comes up. In my ~/.xserverrc file, I have put "-dpi 100" and the X server comes up in 100 dpi mode and I am a happy camper. Now, I think I'd like to have the graphical login from run level 5. kdm comes up with a nice screen, but the X server is only running at 75 dpi. I cannot figure out where to put the 100 dpi setting for this situation. It appears not to read the same files for the xdm/kdm method of starting the X server as it does when one types startx. writing to tape

Hi All, I trying to write a program that will write to tape, but i can't seem to get it to work correctly. i have attached a simple piece of source code that will open a file (or device) and write the string "hello, tape". Hey folks! Thanks for multiple answers to my question. I ended up using Theo's solution: for i in *_x.*; do mv -f $i `echo $i | sed -e 's/_x././'`; done and it worked perfectly to get the job done. I've since been playing around with a few of the other suggestions to see what would work best next time I need to do soemthing similar. If anything, it's sparked my interest to learn more about shell scripting. Thanks again! --Tim

Bash help

Hey folks! I have a bunch of files on a server that are in the format "filename_x.dat" and I need to rename them "filename.dat", i.e. strip to last two characters off the filename while maintaining the extension. If it wasn't for the fact that I have about 400 files in multiple directories, I'd do it by hand. However, it's of a somewhat urgent nature - hence this slightly off-topic cry for help! =) I'm pretty sure there's a way to do it via a shell script (I use bash) - the only problem being that I've never written one before. Can anyone point me to a faq/tutorial/website that might explain the process? If it's a trivial task, anyone care to take a stab? Google gave me a few leads, but most aren't helping a lot. interesting problem

Shortly after I started using a wireless lan, I began having problems with connecting to my local ip addresses; I'm not sure what's causing it. Internet works FINE, and yet, a couple of minutes after I boot my machine I can't connect to anything in the 192.168 range! It doesn't matter the protocol, smb, http, etc. no connections at all. What's stranger is that my win4lin install, which uses vnet, has no problems at all. What in the world is going on here? Any thoughts? Wes

Lexmark z22 printing

Printing fun... Some of you might already know what I have to say, but I wanted to get this out for those that are in my boat... I am running a Gateway Solo 9100 laptop with Red Hat 7.3 installed. I mentioned a few months back (almost a year ago, now) that I had gotten my Lexmark z22 to print with Red Hat 7.1. One thing that I hate about upgrading RH versions is that it invariably forces me to re-learn things, since Red Hat can't seem to leave current configurations alone. 8\ ANYWAY, for a bunch of Stupid Reasons, I decided that I wanted to make use of the USB port on my z22 instead of the parallel port. Imagine, if you will, the fun I had in trying to get a printer that is barely supported by Linux to be recognized on the USB interface... I went to Lexmark's website and got the Linux drivers. Wouldn't you know it, though, but the drivers make no effort whatsoever to support the USB interface on the printer! After a bit of poking around, I realized that there was a KDE Control Panel! I use Window Maker by default and I was annoyed that control-panel was removed. I went through there and LO! the Lexmark z22 is there, right on the USB interface! 8) Granted, there are a couple snags. It looks like I can print multiple text-only documents with no problem, but if I print a Postscript file, then I have to turn the printer off then turn it on again. Compared to having no printer at all (or worse-yet, having to print from WinDOZE!), I see this as only a minor inconvenience. I'm thinking that this rig is using the foomatic configuration scripts, which may be unacceptable to some. I base this thought on the fact that the driver in use is actually for the Lexmark 3200 series, which (according to the .xml file) may print "a bit too rich"... <shrug> It looks okay for the black text that I'm printing with right now. Konqueror enhanced browsing

Hi all, I've noticed in Konqueror that one can type things like: info: ...in the URL field and Konqueror will display info pages. There are others, such as: smb: lan: ftp: man: http: camera: The aforementioned are not listed in the Konqueror enhanced browsing configuration window, and I would guess that they are Konqueror defaults. Is there a definitive list of these? I'm wondering what features I might be missing that I'd like to use! tmpfs

When researching the Reiserfs a while back, I discovered the tmpfs file system and the --bind option to mount. Both of these are nice tools to have around. --bind has made it into the mount man page, but the tmpfs is not documented in the man pages anywhere I can think to look. Does anyone know of a reason that it should not be used? I'm thinking of using it for some locking files and pid stamps -- all stuff that should not persist across a reboot. TIA, Bill

CUPS + Samba + Win2000

Help with Audio on Linux

Gurus I have a P-IV with AC97 on i810 (AvanceLogic ALC200/200P). I am unable to get FullDuplex audio working. I have installed the RC2 release of ALSA drivers but still, mic and speakers don't work together. I am pretty sure I am missing something in the configs. hardware problem?

I just had trouble booting into linux. Tried several times, but kept getting a blank screen, so I booted windoze. I noticed that I saw nothing on the screen until I got to my windows desktop, so I tried booting to linux again, and waited for my hard drive light to stop. Then I logged in with a blank screen, called up X, and it came up fine. Any ideas why my startup screen is missing? I haven't tried going into my bios yet, to see if it comes up on the screen. I'm not sure I remember how to get out of the bios on this machine, so I'm a little hesitant to go there. I'm not sure how to proceed, so any ideas are welcome. Athlon 1.2G, Spacewalker AK12A motherboard, ELSA GLoria L vid card, Viewsonic A70 monitor, 256RAM. I've got another computer here, so I could try switching monitors (not tonight). Thanks. Greg

What are Lindows and Lycoris?

HI all, Walmart is selling ultra-cheap PCs with Lindows on them (the PC is by Microtel). The screen shots look alot like KDE. Lindows makes software available for download on their website (the apps, not the OS) for a fee. I've also seen Lycoris, and on their website, they make passing references to Redmond Linux. So, I ask the question, are these just some version of Linux "packaged for the masses"? If not, what are they? Are there other similar products besides Lindows and Lycoris? Hi all On the TV lately I have heard a lot about Lilo. It seems to be in the context of something called Stitch. I am not clear on the details but Stitch apparently is some sort of extraterrestial with a bent to destroying everything it encounters. I assume the reference is, therefore, to Microsoft. The interesting thing about Lilo is that it never seems to be spelled LILO. The first letter is captialized so I assume there is some degree of case sensitivity involved. If any of you can decipher what all of this means perhaps you could fill me in! :-) I do notice that Disney seems to be involved so it would seem that Pixar is not the only place Linux seems to be making inroads. doug

Thank you all for your help.... just wanted to let you know the outcome of the installs... On the HP Vectra, there appears to be some hardware issues, as Windows 2K boot floppy fails with a Boot I/O Error. This machine has been suspect, and I will probably scavenge it for parts (CD, Memory) (It has had some intermittent problems finding the HDD.) On the HP Kayak..... it's UP! I downloaded the new boot disk image from the email below, and the install ran without a hitch. It must not like the 7.2 standard boot image since it failed both from the install disk and from the boot floppy I made straight from the CDROM. Installing Redhat on HP machines

I am having a problem installing Redhat 7.2 on 2 different HP machines. I thought I might be able to get some information from the plethera of people who have done installs. Or any ideas on what to do next? One is an HP Vectra (2Gb IDE, 56MB, P200). I can fdisk and select packages, but when it goes to format the disk to install the packages, I get a signal 11 fatal error. I think there may be something flaky with this system (HDD or memory problem?) Just wondering if anyone else has seen this type of failure and could give me any more insight. I plan on replacing the HDD to see if that is the problem. The other is a dual-300 PII HP Kayak with a SCSI Drive. I get a boot error when trying to boot from the CDROM or Install Disk. This system is currently running NT 5. Any ideas why the boot would fail? Thanks, jeff

Hi again, Over the weekend, I received some "creative" feedback and all of it is appreciated. Why question was intended to find an easy way to track down the owner of an IP address within our corporate network (unregistered with DNS/WINS). Not to hack, crack, spam, or DOS them, but to gain information on that particular node. I have to bring this IP address to the attention of our Security Team, but wanted more information to give them. Hi, I bought a new hard drive, Maxtor 7200 RPM, ATA133, 40GB, and began using it at ATA100. I formatted my /dev/hda5 with mkfs.ext2 and mounted it under /home. I have been using this mount with the Slackware 8.0 at /dev/hda6 for several days without any problems. Two days ago I installed Slackware8.1 on /dev/hda8 and used the same device mounted to /home. I'd really like to find out where and who this person is, but don't know much outside of ping, traceroute, nslookup, etc .... I was wondering if anyone knows of any tools that can get me more information on this person? This happens to be on our private network, so most internet tools I don't think will help much. A co-worker wanted help checking his AOL e-mail. He would usually use M$ IE to longin to the AOL webmail. M$ IE now crashes on the webmail page. It is unuseable in most cases. I installed netscape 6.2.3 the AOL webmail page works 100%. Boston Globe article

Featured in the article is a product called SiteScape which I had seemed demo'd just last week. Many of the features of the collaborative tool set are familiar to me in other settings: email, IRC (for "immediate" stuff), news (for discussions) and version control to track document modifications. One feature they mentioned that I have not encountered in the UNIX/Linux/Gnu world is a collaborative whiteboard that allows different users to share an electronic whiteboard. Has anyone seen anything like this in the open source community? Ideally, it would be web-based so that it would not be specific to any one client OS. Thanks, Bill

Laptop question - screen resolution

HI WLUG, My laptop has a 15" screen rated for 1024x768. I setup my laptop to have 3 resolutions in my XF86Config file: 1024x768 (default) 800x600 640x480 With XFree86 4.x, it appears that I don't explicitly need to specify a mode line any more (but I can if I wish). SuSE's configuration process puts a mode line in for me. When I run X and then run xvidtune, when I'm in 1024x768 mode, it indicates a refresh of 60 Hz. However, when I run in 800x600 mode, xvidtune thinks the refresh rate is around 90Hz, and in 640x480 mode, xvidtune thinks the refresh rate is 131 Hz(!). I'm not sure I believe it since I don't think the display can handle that (but if it is true, am I seriously overdriving the display?). Also note that in the lower resolution modes, the display actually looks a tad fuzzy. I am not using anti-aliased fonts. Is this normal for laptops or am I doing something wrong? Guys, My Javascript + dhtml has always been one great hack. And, unlike the other scripting languages I use (all open source) there just doesn't seem to be a great "javascript community" on the web. Just lots of free samples (yes, i've googled, maybe not enough). Here's my problem. I've got a table and I want one column to be used to display the different links in each area. If I mouse over "about us" I want the other table to display the links for that area. when I do this outside a table, I just create a bunch of <div>'s that are hidden, and just Javascript to make them visible and raise their z-index at the proper time (yes, terrible hack, my javascript sucks). In the table, I'm not sure how to "stack" the different <div>'s. I though relative positioning would do the trick, because the parent for all of the <div>'s should be the <td> tag, but instead the <div>'s relatively position to one another. So, I'm kinda stuck. Any help you can give would be great, web sites with tutorials are great too. Pre-made scripts are ok, but I'm actually trying to learn something here. Thanks, Wes

Folks, I'd like to try my hand at debugging the kernel boot process on a Macintosh PPC. I have a couple of silly questions, though. 1) Can I debug a Mac from an x86 box using Xmon? 2) I need a null modem cable to connect my Athlon and my Mac. RedFlag Linux

HI gang, I downloaded a copy of RedFlag Linux last night (straight from China) for a friend. I tried to run it on VMware, but it immediately wants to enable the frame buffer device and VMware doesn't seem to support that. On another old machine, it can't handle my ancient PAS16 SCSI controller as part of the installation process. I ran it part way on my laptop to get to the installation screen, so I know the CD works. (I have a low quality screenshot if anybody is interested). I'd be interested to see it running, even though I can't read Chinese. If anybody wants a copy, let me know and I'll make you one. To answer question 2... A search for "null modem cable" on google will give you lots of good hits. For local kernel debug, you might just need to connect: Athlon Mac ground to ground txd to rxd rxd to txd If that is not enough, handshaking might require additional connections. There are variations, but I have had success, in other applications, with this handshaking setup: dtr to cd & dsr cd & dsr to dtr rts to cts cts to rts On a 9-pin connector: 1 = cd 2 = rxd 3 = txd 4 = dtr 5 = ground 6 = dsr 7 = rts 8 = cts 9 = ri You can probably buy a null modem cable at radio shack. It might also be sold as a lap-link serial cable. Be sure that the sex (protruding pins vs. recepticle) of the connector on the cable matches that on the computer you will connect to. Robert N. I have a mail server setup with sendmail 8.11.6 (redhat 7.2) that recieves mail for multiple domains. What I am trying to setup is this: sales(a)host1.com forwards to user1's inbox sales(a)host2.com forwards to user2's inbox Is this possible with sendmail? I've trid doing it in the /etc/aliases file and had no luck. when I run the newaliases command it gives me a warning and it doesn't work corectly when I tested it. Permission Problems Accessing Server-based NFS Share

Help! I want to set up my home network so that I can access my files stored on the server (Mandrake 8.0) from my client machine (RedHat 7.3) using NFS. I configured /etc/export on the server side and made certain that both nfs-utils and portmap were running on the server. I proceeded to mount the exported directory at a mount point I set up on the client machine without a problem. But, when I tried to access an exported NFS share on my server machine from my client machine, I got a "permission denied" error message. On accessing the client-side mount point, I see the subdirectories but they are noted to be locked. I was eventually able to get access to the directory but only by going into the server and enabling read, write and execute privileges for "others." Might someone out there have another solution? Is there something else I can do to solve this problem without having to leave read, write and execute privileges on the directory to such a broad class of users? Jim

I just bought a new Netgear Ma401 wireless card. I figured it was pretty cheap and it seemed like it was supported under linux. Well after doing some research I've found conflicting views. Some say its a PrismII based card, some say its a Orinco card. I have no idea and I'm new wireless with linux. My question is, does anyone have this card and wants to point me in the right direction. Or can someone point me in the right direction for wireless and linux in general. DDS3 tape drive?

Hey guys - I've got an old backup tape from 1999 that I'd like to get the data off of. My big problem - I don't have the old system/tape drive around anymore, or personally have anything that can handle the tape. (The DDS2 tape drive I tried just spit the tape back out at me.) The tape is a DDS-3 Data Cartridge (Compressed Capacity 24 GB), an HP C5708A. I do not know how much data is on the tape (or if it's been corrupted), but I doubt that it's anywhere near the 24GB. All I really need is a data dump (to either a CD-R or such that I can FTP off to my server), and I'll poke through it later. I really can't spare the $680 (the cheapest data recovery quote I've gotten) for a possibly corrupted tape... any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. 8) -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. less & line numbers

This is weird... I can't get "less" to display line numbers in the left column. All that happens is that the text of the file I'm viewing shifts to the right, adding 2 blank columns. It looks like the shift amount is too small to display the numbers, so I don't get to see them. I'm seeing this on both RedHat 7.1 and 7.2 systems. On an older system (6.0?), less shows the line numbers. (I could have sworn that this was working right recently, but it doesn't now.) I'm using the "--LINE-NUMBERS" option to try to see the lines on the newer versions, and the "-N" option on the older versions. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

Hi All, I may be FINALLY getting some wireless access in my house (It's amazing what a simple furniture move can accomplish). So I'm wondering, what wireless nics work in Linux. I've heard that there are some problems, do any of you have 802.11b networks at home (what's the mac address range.....wink)? If so, what nics are you using. Multiple mice on a laptop

Hello, I've got a laptop that usually resides in a docking station at work, where it is connected to an ordinary wheelmouse. That works fine. When I take the laptop out of the docking station, disconnect the mouse, and start up Linux again (so using the touchpad), the pointer tends to go crazy. Now, I know the reason for this is the protocol is wrong in the XF86Config file. The wheelmouse uses IMPS/2 with 5 buttons (3+wheel), the touchpad PS/2 with 2 buttons. I can fix this by editing the XF86Config file appropriately, and the touchpad works fine. Now, my question is: Is there any way to get Linux to automatically figure out that the mouse is not attached, and so fall back on the touchpad? BTW, I've set up two "Pointer" sections in XF86Config, and just adjust the CorePointer line to reference the correct one. XFree doesn't like having two CorePointers. I'm using SuSE 7.3, XFree86 4.x if it matters. Thanks, -Adam

The linux box is old hardware, but the linux software installation is new. In an effort to simplify the problem, I've dropped back to monitoring a single UPS. Below are the config files and results for using the two different cable types. For both config's, I set the permissions on /dev/ttyS0 to 666. **************** Using the 940-0020B cables. I've got an HP tape drive model C1537A that has the annoying trait of rewinding itself automatically. Does anybody have any suggestions on ways to prevent this behavior? mt doesn't seem to have an option to turn this feature off. Thanks, Tim. strange filenames

Hi All For some reason i sometimes find files with strange names like '??'. When i do a long listing the file name changes to some other bizare character combination. When i try to delete the file using 'rm', or cat it, i can't seem to pass the correct filename to rm (i do try to escape characters, and use 'TAB' but no luck). Is there a way to pass an inode number to rm or cat? thanks, --brad

I've never seen output formatted like that before. tx-ovr (overruns) is the statistic to watch out for. What does lspci -v -v say about your ethernet card? I just moved a box from a testing network to a DMZ network and I'm getting all this weird ethernet crap... here's the error's I keep getting NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out status 7088 0c00 at 241/301 command 001c000 the commands are different along with the status codes. the box has a Intel 10/100 Pro card running at 100 full duplex. I hooked up a win2k laptop configured it to the proper ip in the DMZ and it worked fine, so I know it's not the link. Thanks, Tim.

USB Driver: Where to start?

Folks, I've got this idiot little USB camera that I got as part of a promotion. (Specifically, it's a QuickVideo weeCam USB from Alaris that I got a couple years back from Earthlink.) Near as I can figure, there are no drivers for this fool thing for Linux. IF I were to attack the problem, where should I start? I've noticed in the logs that the system sees it when it is connected and disconnected, so I suppose that's a Good Thing, but I don't know where to go from there. I have sendmail set up here at work, and everyone can send email fine, except when I try to send using the good old mail command.. it tells me "Can't create transcript file ./xfg4OGa2S21960: Permission denied queueup: cannot create queue temp file ./tfg4OGa2S21960, uid=500: Permission denied" I have tried doing chmod 777 on the "/var/spool/mqueue" and it still fails. However when I use pine and set my smtp server to box.domain.com ( the localhosts name ) I am able to send fine. This problem is preventing a webmail client I wrote from sending mail... Any ideas? So, the error resolves itself in 7 seconds, and no data is lost, so maybe I don't care. ;) Really, the problem is that it muddies up the console when it happens, and I have to press ^a l. The system is a decade-old experimental dual Pentium-133 running 2.2.21 SMP, with an onboard AIC-7870 (with a BIOS that says "EVALUATION VERSION. DO NOT DISTRIBUTE.") and a 4GB Western Digital Enterprise that someone told me was dead. Heh... okay that sounds pretty bad. HI gang, I had installed KDE 3.0 as part of my upgrade to SuSE 8.0 and was quite unhappy with the frequency of crashes with Konqueror (multiple times nightly). Well, I've just upgraded to KDE 3.0.1 and have been using Konqueror for over an hour without a crash. Things are looking up! Streaming audio from sound card...

Any recommendations on what to use as a server app to stream audio from a sound card input? I'm looking to send an MP3-encoded stream from a police scanner radio over an internal network. I need to be able to use WinAmp and XMMS as clients. Been searching around and see lots of choices but looking for recommendations on a simple and stable solution. HI everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting to be held this Wednesday evening, May 15th, at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus. At this meeting, Andy Stewart will give a short presentation about his recent experiences with PLIP (Parallel Line Internet Protocol). The Linux PLIP software allows the user to connect two computers together via their printer ports. A network is run between the parallel interfaces. If you ever wanted to build a cheap, quick (as in rapid setup), and dirty point-to-point network that actually functions, this is it. If two people would like to bring their laptops, I'll bring the cable and we can try a live demo. Be sure you have parport, parport_pc, and plip compiled as modules. My cable has male DB25 connectors. As I don't expect the PLIP presentation to be lengthy, if there are others who would like to do a quick presentation, please let me know. I just installed driftnet (http://www.ex-parrot.com/~chris/driftnet/) on a whim, but I can't seem to get it to show me any graphics, and I'm fairly sure there is some going by. I'm running RedHat 7.1. Here's the command I'm running as root: ./driftnet -v -i eth0 I get a blank pop-up, and the command window shows that it's seeing traffic. TIA, Bill

Regarding the IDE hard drive going bad... can you elaborate more on the symptoms? I've been trying to track down system instability on one of my systems which is running *cough* XP pro. Lockups really stink. It took me several weeks to finally figure out my problem (an IDE hard drive slowly going bad). Memtest is great - definitely try it out. I would also recommend the Cerberus Test Control System program (ctcs). It is the program used by VA Linux to burn in their hardware. It does some *really* stressful things to the hardware and will find anything that is flaky (supposedly). Locked up

Sometimes my computer locks up completely, so that neither the mouse nor the keyboard will work. I'm running SuSE 7.2 on an Athlon 1.2GHz/Shuttle Spacewalker AK12A, 256M memory. It seems to happen when I'm in a chat room. Running Mozilla 0.9.9 with recent Java plugin, also running Yahoo Instant Messenger, and it seems like things were loading very slowly in the chatroom all the times this had happened. I'm on a dialup line, so when I say slow, I mean like go-and-make-tea slow. Otherwise, the connection is ok (46.6K) when loading other pages. ctrl-alt-backspace does nothing, alt-F2,3 etc. does nothing, same for ctrl-D, ctrl-C, ctrl-Z, ctrl-alt-Fx. I had to hit the kill switch. This last time, it wasn't too bad, but the time before this, rebooting to linux was pretty scary. This only happens once every couple of weeks. I'm suspicious of the keyboard, because it persisted once when I rebooted to win98, then it cleared when I rebooted once more, first wiggling the wire where it goes into the keyboard. Does it sound at all like a software problem, or should I just ignore it and replace the keyboard? And is there some other way to bail out that I haven't tried? Thanks, Greg

hi, I have a strange-for-me problem. I am one of those paranoid guys, who has added "ntpdate time.nist.gov" to the crontab to be executed every day. the problem is that, every night the system time is set 1 hour earlier of the actual time. i.e it is executed at 23:00 and is set to 22:00 after ntpdate, as far as I could observe. I am pretty confused about the subject. Tried different timezone names, etc, hence more confused. I also have a problem with the name of the timezone. which timezone name do you choose guys? US/Eastern? America/Newyork? GMT+5? EST? EDT? or any other? I am using slackware-current. set the timezone to America/New_York and whenever I send a mail, sylpheed shows my timezone as GMT-4 and #date shows my timezone as EDT. any comments. other than removing the crontab job? :) thanks, baris

PowerMac CD-ROM

Does anyone have a SCSI cdrom that I can borrow/buy for an old 7500? My linux box is such a hackjob of software that I want to reinstall it with YDL. Low and behold I try it last week and the damn CDROM drive doesnt seem to work! Some files copy, some dont... I will just assume its the drive due to age/heat. So I was hoping someone (near WPI) had a CDROM drive i could borrow (external would be good). The drive i think would have to work in MacOS too (to install BOOTX files). Such a PITA some times. Beside CDROM, what other PPC install options still exisit? The boot floppies over network from linuxppc.org use to work but i am not sure they are still around. Bad NIC?

HI gang, I have a network interface on my firewall that is throwing receive errors at me. They are in the overrun and frame columns of the ifconfig printout for that interface. I tried to restart the interface and reload the kernel module to no avail. I also power cycled the Linksys switch and cabled to a different switch port. A different cable didn't help, either. I'd rather not reboot the machine with 135 days of uptime. I noticed that on a 100 Mbit ethernet segment, I'm getting a failure rate on approx. 25% of the packets. Reducing the MTU from 1500 to 768 helps the transfer rate but doesn't solve the problem. This is the only machine on my home network that shows any errors. Any thoughts? can anyone determine from the status codes what software the Reporting-MTA is? Maybe the reason is hidden in that code. Your mysterious non-delivery generated a Status: 5.0.0 for a comparison returned email, I send a test message to a friend's inactive hotmail account (disabled for lack of use). I'm a Charter user, and something has changed between charter and hotmail so that I can no longer send email to hotmail.com accounts. I CAN send if I use Charter's web mail interface, but I much prefer to stick with pine. I suspect that the problem is that I'm behind a linksys router using private IP's and NAT. I've tried talking to Charter tech support, but they are worthless -- they just tell me that they only support Outlook email. I've tried configuring Pine so the it uses the Charter smtp server directly, but that doesn't seem to help, either. Right now, I'm using my local machine, and routing through Charter. Any ideas? It's been a loooong time since I've run linux on a 486 (slack 2.something, iirc) I'm thinking Debian potato would be alright? I most likely won't install X, but if I do, I'll use X3.foo with a minimalist windowmanager... Any suggestions? It's going to be alot of shoehorning for sure. I won't lie, I haven't ran a linux system since my P200 died, she was a fileserver and random-use machine. So, getting these running would be great so I could fool around at work during slow hours. Regarding M$ enforcement of licenses...

In case you haven't heard, M$ is auditing a dozen or so large school districts for compliance on licensing. Of course, this will be ugly and will run one district an estimated $1,000,000 per year to comply with M$. That's $1,000,000 more then they pay now. M$ is offering a simplified arrangement whereby a school system pays a flat fee for every Intel box (regardless of what it might actually be running) that would run that same district about $30,000. You can see where this is headed! Aside from noting that people's dishonesty about paying the real costs associated with M$ software has gotten them into this trouble (if only because the real costs are not apparent to "management"), I'm wondering what is available as a real alternative to M$ for the great unwashed masses. Of course, the answer I would expect to hear is "Linux!", but... I'm talking about a solution that is useable by those who are not rabid members of a LUG, or Sys admins in their day job. I'm talking about productivity software that will seamlessly read and write M$ file formats (Excel, Word, etc.). I don't know, for example, if Star Office is a real alternative because I don't know how well it interoperates with those who use Word, for example, on a daily basis. Perhaps there is a solution that will reliably run M$ applications without having to buy the OS, but that is only a step in the right direction. I was hoping to hear suggestions about what is out there and if Linux is ready to work seamlessly in heterogeneous High-Tech world. This might be a good topic for one of the WLUG meetings... Steve

Most drives require +5 and + 12 volt supplies. shot power supply?

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 and I am pretty sure that the power supply is shot. I was wondering if there are any tests that I can do to make sure that it is the power supply and not something else. I am sure that there is nothing wrong with the power cord. When I plug in the cord and push the power button nothing happens and nothing lights up. I was also wondering why there are four cords going to each drive. I know it needs a positive and negative and posibly a ground but what is the last one for. What does each cord do? Is it possible to replace it with a generic PSU becuase i heard that only dell ones will work with a dell computer. OK, Looking at my log file from my firewall reveals that not I've got people trying to through my firewall from... 66.189.81.226 (and 246) (http connect attempts) 62.163.126.100 (same domain as yesterday) How do I track them back to the ISP's and send a message to their abuse@ address? Someone's trying to ping me from 66.189.24.226 as well. Am I being paranoid or could my isp be trying to crack my firewall to see if I've got any servers running? Time to batten down the hatches... At this meeting, WLUG member Tim Keller will describe to us a problem he had with Linux and how he chose to modify his copy of the Linux kernel to add a new signal to solve the problem. This talk will cover some kernel internals and programming. A more detailed abstract can be found on the WLUG website. There will be a raffle as well. Addison Wesley sent me a copy of a book entitled "Embedded Linux - Hardware, Software, and Interfacing" which I'll give to the lucky raffle winner. There is no cost to be in the raffle. I'd also like to entertain a discussion regarding content for future meetings. In Linux dual boot systems you can mount the Win98 side drive to read and write using vfat. Question, if you run Win2000 or XP with a NTFS type file system can you still access the drives from the Linux side.

RBL access

Hey, guys. I'm getting quite a lot of crap email these days, ever since ORBS/ORBL & Co. disappeared, and MAPS went to a fee-based service. (I'm really not planning to pay $200/yr for a single blackhole list.) I was never really crazy about MAPS to begin with, because they tried too hard to be "fair." ;) ORBS was hyper-aggressive, and rocked. (About 80% of my crap email was filtered by ORBS, and I had special pre-RBL filters that extracted mail from friends using bad ISP's with open relays.) Anyway, is anyone using (or know of) a freely-queriable RBL? Although it's fun to upgrade the keyword filter, it would be easier if I only had to do it for exceptions. BTW, for the curious, my daily haul of junk mail varies from 20 to 40 messages. Can anyone beat that? -Chuck

Redundant Mail....

I couldn't think of a better way of phrasing it. I'm running Courier for incoming SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and webmail. The mail itself is stored using Maildirs in user's home directory. Short of running something like rsync between my primary box and backup, is their any good way of getting redundancy into the picture here? I already have the backup box setup as a relay in case the primary goes down, but that doesn't make the mail any closer to the user.... -mike

I also noticed that it's not one particular host that bumps me out of telnet, but all connections and all hosts. The network folks don't know (or maybe they do) that I'm running linux on the network, but is there a way for them to periodically reset the port I'm using in the data closet? This is really quite interesting to me, so any input is very helpful. And since then the CPU utilizaion on the machine has been pegged out. The machine still is very responsive. When the mount went bad ... I couldn't do anything with any process that was using anything on that volume. I tried a bunch of stuff, but eventually just shut down NFS (so the processes got an I/O error and died) and did an "umount -f" on that volume. He is paying ~$25/month for AOL... He doesn't want/need Charter, just wants to check mail a few times during the day. Also, anyone know if you can set-up email forwarding in AOL? Thanks! Steve

Problems dropping telnet sessions

Hello all, I recently traded in my Solaris 8 (x86) install for SuSE Linux 7.3 and now am having problems keeping telnet sessions open for extended periods of time. Let me give a little background on what I use this box for. Basically my linux box is used as a workstation for system monitoring. I usually have 6 to 8 separate desktops which I use to separate our different Unix environments (i.e. development, test, production ...). I may run HP Openview client on one desktop to monitor alerts and keep telnet sessions open on other desktops in order to quickly access a given server. Until recently I've been using Solaris 8 (x86) with no problems, but decided I wanted to get comfortable with linux and prove to my boss that there are many nice things we can do with linux that we can't do with Solaris. I installed SuSe 7.3 (2.4.10 kernel) and since have had troubles keeping telnet connections alive. What I mean by that is, when I leave the linux workstation inactive for a period of time (let's say 30 minutes), my telnet sessions are disconnected with the message "Connection closed by foreign host". I can find no messages in /var/adm/messages (on the Solaris side) or /var/log/messages (on the linux side). Anyone have this type of problem or more importantly, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks. Matthew

poor PCMCIA network performance

I use two network cards in my Dell Inspiron 8000 (PIII-700): a 3Com 3CCFE574BT and a Linksys wireless card. With the 3Com card (which is a 10/100) I never get better than 1.4 MB/sec (about 12 Mb/sec), even when the card is in 100 Mb mode (at some point in the past the limit was about 2.5 MB/sec). At that rate, top shows my CPU utilization pegged at about 100%, even doing a simple ftp. I know the card doesn't do DMA, but that's rather slow even for a PIO transfer. These cards have been around for ages; I don't think people would have been too satisfied with 400 KB/sec saturating a 200 MHz system. On the Linksys card, I likewise never get more than about 250 KB/sec, even if the computer is right next to the WAP and the link quality is 92/92, suggesting that I'm also hitting up against a hard limit. The WAP is connected to my main system via the motherboard ethernet, which I know from other means (when I was transferring data from my previous system to the current one) has no trouble maxing out at 10 MB/sec (that ethernet does DMA). eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"..." Well, the first one I could actually conceive of... You figure, if they acquire the catholic church they'd just decree that as of baptism you signed the EULA (sorta like opening the package means you agree to the terms (that are on the slip of paper inside the package..)) since the EULA basically means microsoft could set off a nuclear device and get away with it, they'd have no problem proving in court that the church isn't responsible for faulty prietware. As for the nuclear device, If its a microsoft nuclear device I can see the following things happening... 1. Needs repeated reboots before exploding. 2. The trigger will need to have a service pack installed. 3. You'll need to buy MSND 1.5 to get the newest features (like exploding) 4. You'll need to have IE installed along with the latest direct X drivers. 5. before exploding you'll need to get a MSND registration number and enter it in binary using a telegraph pad. 6. "Explode" and "Disarm" will be the same button... Just some thoughts... Win4Lin

Folks, This is not a commercial endorsement. I just installed Win4Lin, the product that lets you run Windows under Linux, and, for those occasions when you need Windows, it's very nice. Performance is decent, and there are only a few enhancements needed: 1) Max memory supported for Windows is 64 MB 2) Only supports serial, parallel, and virtual NIC (no scanners, USB) 3) No DirectX yet They're working on adding those goodies. But I can run Photo-Paint, TurboTax, some Windows-based Bible software packages, ... all without multibooting. At $80.00, that's not a bad price to pay. --Skip

/dev permissions & ownership

I just discovered that something has caused many device files (many of them audio) have ended up with the wrong ownership/permission. (My daughter's account had ownership.) I fixed some, but I have no idea what's the right permissions. Is there some way I can check the permissions? Ideally, there would be a script that would report which device files are not set to the default. (I've changed some, like the cdrom and floppy, intentionally.) TIA, Bill

A small cash-strapped startup just had their email/web/etc. server die on them (hardware issue), and is looking for an inexpensive replacement. If you either have an older server kicking around that you'd like to pass along, or if you can point me to somewhere (like an equipment sale) that may have a box that'll fit the bill, I'd love to hear about it. (We're hoping for something less expensive (or better equipped for the same price) than the new $3000 box that we've been quoted.) Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. :) The main requirements that I was given for a replacement is: dual power supplies 6 drive bays PC-based (Intel/AMD and the like) Plusses: larger amount of hard drive space (the biggest plus) rack-mount Compaq better processor or memory SCSI hot-swappable drives The box will eventually be running Windows 2000 Server and Exchange (but the box that died was a Pentium (something) @200MHz and managed ok (SMALL startup company), so processor speed/memory isn't a major issue). The box will preferrably be running RAID5. As it's a W2k networked site, there's probably going to be a bunch of emailed Office files, so a large amount of HD space is what we're going for. If you need any more information about our needs, feel free to email me. If you don't quite know if the system that you have will work out for us, let me know anyways and I can pass the info along to our main IT guy. hi, I want to put a URL link to one of the context menus in Mozilla. Do you think it is possible? Do you think I have to deal with the source of the program?(which I don't think I can) Or is there another way to alter the values in the context menus? For example, I will highlight a word on a web page, and when right click on it, mozilla will query dict.org with my highlighted word, on a new browser window. Charter and MSN....

Ummm, To say that I was pissed off would be putting it mildly. In the fall, Charter announced that they were beginning a "partnership" with MSN. Fine; but I realized that this meant that Charter would be trying to get all their subscribers on to .net. I don't want passport, I don't want .net. I wrote to Charter, calmly voicing my concerns and recieved an e-mail that NO CHARTER SUBSCRIBER WOULD BE SIGNED UP FOR A MSN PASSPORT WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT. Well, imagine my surprise this weekend when I recived a "congratulations" message for "deciding" to sign-up for passport! ?!@#!!!@ And who did it to me? VMS & CLD's -- a blast from the past

Many moons ago, I spent my callow youth as a VMS geek and was fairly capable for a mechanical engineer. I got around the Command Language Definition (CLD) compiler (I can't remember the name of the compiler) and learned to appreciate it's flexibility and power. UNIX/linux, etc. has nothing (that I've seen) that even comes close. The reason I bring this up is that a friend of mine has written a spec for an ambitious command line interpreter that has a bit of the flavor of the VMS CLD's. This has led me to wonder if anyone has seen a port of anything like the VMS CLD language to UNIX/linux. I know that the syntax would have to be different because the VMS option "/" would interfere with the *nix directory syntax. Anyone have any suggestions? And yes, I do remember punch cards, keypunches, paper tape, disk drives as big as washing machines, etc. TIA, Bill

Outbound email broken

Folks, I have an account on AT&T Broadband, and for some reason, my outbound email seems to be broken. I can send email from KDEMail to myself and I get the mail back promptly, but any email sent to a mailing list seems to go into a black hole. I'm sending this from the web-based client at ATTBI.com, so I'm pretty sure this one's going to make it. Can anyone suggest anything I can do to make sure the mail makes it to the other end? Is getting a confirmation receipt the only choice? Thanks, Skip P.S. Additional info: I'm running Mandrake 8.1, with InteractiveBastille for setting up the firewall. I have a private LAN behind the firewall, so it's probably because I didn't answer one of the questions correctly while setting up the firewall. Do I need to enable inbound SMTP connections? I don't think so. (I have a registered IP name, but not a static IP address.)

I think it would be cool if redhat during the install had an option for "optimized for your architecture". In choosing this option, It would run either run a test suite and find the best settings for your machine, or it would have a bunch of custom configs to choose from like "586/586MMX/Athlon/686/etc". It would then spend about a day hand compiling every package for your box and then installing it. Yeah it would be hilariously slow, but you'd end up with a really optimized box. The only danger I could see would be if you find that certain optimizations corrupted things (like gcc/glibc) etc. On a side note, you could have an optimize script that ran post install that you'd just say something like "optimize --all --no=kernel --mode=586MMX ftp://jungle.unc.edu/blah/blah/redhat" or /mnt/cdrom and it would go off, grab the SRPMS and systematically make your machine fully 586MMX optimized, skipping the kernel. Though I'm thinking you'd probably want some order to the way it did it. I would think that you'd want to upgrade gcc and glibc first, since they'll speed things up. Just ideas... Gentoo Linux Distro

I figured since I hadn't seen this on the list I'd post it. I recently (and by recent I mean 2 - 3 months) re-installed Linux on my computer. I was a very satisfied Slack8 user but I wanted something more. For one, I wanted a package manager. So I thought I might dabble into Debian (seeing how that is supposedly the premiere distro). But one problem existed, Debian still used binaries. I wanted everything compiled from source so it was optimized for my system (yes, I am a geek and very proud of it). So I went searching for my distro. I searched and searched and just when I thought I wasn't going to find it, I found a distro called Sorcerer linux. WOW, I thought to myself, this does what I wanted. So I downloaded and installed it. I still hate it to this day. So then I continued my search and stubbled upon Gentoo linux on Slashdot. After being disappointed with Sorcerer, I wasn't expecting much, but little to my knowledge this distro would turn out the be the best distro I've ever tried (and I've tried close to 100 distro's of both unix and linux flavor). So I begin my install of Gentoo. Gentoo is still in late beta stages (the 1.0 release is scheduled for mid to late this month). The install was a little rocky, but unlike most linux distro's you can find the authors on their irc channel on opennetworks and they are a tremendous help. I have yet to have a problem that someone in that channel wasn't able to fix. Not to mention, some of the authors went here to WPI as they commented when they saw I was from WPI. This distro has it all. It has an amazing package management system which is simple to use and VERY powerful. Plus is compiles everything from source which means that your system is 100% optimized for your system (and yes it evern recompiles the gcc and stuff so that it is optimized), although you can now use bninaries optimized for i586. Not to mention you compile the kernel at install time so there is no more "stock" kernel business. You can get to business right away. Also, gentoo will only install what you want, making this as small or large of a system as you wish. IMHO, this is the best distro on the "market" today. I have even begun some devlopment for it. Just thought I'd share some thoughts on the newest distro of my liking. If anyone is interested, their website is, http://www.gentoo.org. openoffice spellcheck

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else has used openoffice and had problems with it's spellcheck. It's gotten a bit better, but still doesn't recognize contractions. I've been trying to find info on their site, but man is that project a beast! You can't find anything and their "issuezilla" is a pain in the rear for quick searches. This is one area where Kword really seems to "work" better, even if I have to add a bunch of words to the dictionary...Any reflections/work-arounds? I'm always trying to get people to not shell-out the $$$ for MS Office, and OpenOffice/StarOffice is a really great alternative at this point. I can't wait for Koffice to get there as well (I just wish I could contribute). Wes

The solution to this is to start mozilla as root, have it download and install the plugin, close the browser and then start it up as a normal user and presto java works. Still no luck. I tried installing as root, first by logging as su and calling up mozilla from command line, and then again (when that didn't work) by backing out of X and starting over as root, calling mozilla from the menu. I've tried running SuSEconfig and tried re-booting, but it doesn't make a difference. I'm not even sure if I really downloaded the file with the browser - both times I did it, I walked away while it was downloading, and when I came back, the browser was gone. Let me take that back - I have four copies of jre131i.xpi in /tmp. Would it make sense to repeat Charles' procedure under /opt/mozilla/plugins? There aren't any jre* files there or under /root/.mozilla, and not even a plugins directory in the latter. I'm guessing that the files downloaded but didn't install. Thanks. After another failed attempt to download it with the browser, I tried gftp and got the file, jre131i.xpi but I have no idea what do do with it. There weren't any readme files nearby at the ftp site. pop3 server?

I need to generate some documents that look decent on the web and also print well. Some of the documents are forms for people to fill in, and, for the most part, the people are pretty unsophisticated. They may even just print the form and fill it in by hand. Some years ago, I was a heavy Latex user, but it's been a while... I've heard rumors that it now has a WYSIWYG interface. Is this true? At any rate, I'm looking for recommendations of something that can produce decent html (most word processors generate abysmal html) and decent printable stuff. (It would be very cool if I could produce the pdf "fill in the blanks" document.) Right now, I'm painfully generating the html in xemacs (very clean html) and then postscript and non-editable pdf from that. I've heard that docbook is good, but that it has a high learning curve. This is very weird... My linux box has just started making sounds -- stuff like little sound card samples. It has done about 6 sounds in the past 30 minutes. The only action I have taken since logging in this morning is to look at some web pages. I've "finger-ed" and "last-ed", but there is no evidence of co-workers getting cute with me. Then at the Linux desktop login window, I select shutdown, and then SuSE is shutting down, it hangs at the point where the drive shares are umounted and then inet says that the system will be halted immediately. It is at this point that SuSE will say that runtime level 0 has been reached, that it has stopped completely. At this point, the system is still running and I can not turn it off, except by turning the power off. What do you think is causing this to happen? and I will be at the WLUG meeting on this Wednesday. Thank you.

Chart generation tools

Guys, Does anyone have any recommendations for data plotting or charting tools under linux/solaris? I'm aware of gnuplot, xmgr (ACE/gr), grace (ACE/gr descendant) but none of them is really what I want. I'm trying to take a bunch of data from my backups and graph the output nicely. I'd like to have both: - stacked plots (show the totals, with breakdowns by groups). - pie charts for individual days - line charts for trend analysis And of course all of this should be easy to do from the Unix command line and/or control/data files. I currently have a script which uses gnuplot to graph the data, but it's not the nicest. I'm looking into using 'grace', but it's not well documented and it's really pushed more to scientific visualization. I'll try to put what I have up on the web at some point, so you can see what I'm trying to do... but if you've ever used Legato Networker, I've got a tool called 'nss' (http://jfs.ecotarium.org/sources/nss) which generates reports on backups. I'm now trying to take the logged data from that and provide some nice trend analysis graphs as well. Hi, I recently purchased SuSE V7.3 and when I shut it down, it hangs while shutting down all of the system processes. How can I fix this problem with the shut down proceedure?

I'd like to figure out a way to "assassinate" processes that get stuck in the "waiting IO" state when I know there's no way they'll ever come out of that state. I just had to reboot my linux workstation to resolve such an issue. I had an file system containing mp3's mounted via smbfs. Unknown to me, this connection had become stale, so when I started up xmms, it hung and immediately went into the dreaded "waiting IO" state, while holding onto my sound hardware. I did a df and had that stuck as well, along with the bash shell I spawned it from. I think I'd like to write a "SIGMURDER" signal that would tell the kernel to just through its tables and forcibly unallocate all the resources a particular process is holding, close all its handles, etc. So before I even contemplate this endeavor, is their away to already do this? Potential difficulties with this idea: - There may be insufficient information about state of the process for the kernel to free up some resources. It might require code in drivers to assist. - Locks or mutexes held by the process should not be freed unless the resource the lock is protecting is in a consistent state. Bob, You haven't given us much to go on, but here's a shot: I'm assuming that this is the first time you've tried this. If so then you might not have configured inetd or xinetd to start the the ftp service when it detects an incoming ftp connection. My system ( Redhat 7.1 Intel) uses xinetd and the config files are in the directory /etc/xinetd; there's one for each service. Try to identify the file that corresponds to your ftp service. Again mine is named 'wu-ftpd' and it's a short file. Open the file with a text editor and look for a line that says 'disable = yes' and change the yes to a no, or delete the line completely. This done, you'll need to restart xinetd (or inetd). On my system I'd enter the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart to accomplish this. Perhaps that'll get you over the hump on this one. But there are other possibilities as well. If this doesn't work, please take a look at your log files, they can provide you (and us!) with valuable clues as to the nature of the problem. It's not uncommon for posters to include short, pertinent portions of a log file for us to see. Another strong possibility is that a packet filter is coming into play and that you incoming ftp request is just being ignored. That's handled by 'ipchains' or 'iptables' and is typically setup at startup time. It that appears to be the case, read the init.d script and see where it's looking for its configuration file, then check *that* file for any special handling of 'ftp' ports 21 and 20. The strongest likelyhood is that both of the above things need to be done. But, be warned about FTP in general: unless you're using it off the internet, historically it's been the source of many breakins and cannot be considered secure by nomal users as login and password are passed in cleartext over the internet. nvidia with X

Hi all i've been struggling with trying to get nvidia's drivers to work for my TNT PCI card. The install goes fine, but when i startx, i only get a blank screen. Looking at the Log, i don't see any fatal errors. When i kill X (from a remote machine using ssh) my screen displays a few dozen vertical lines, and no console. I'm not very fluent in X, perhaps someone can spot an error in the config, or log file. Thanks, --brad

OpenOffice Macros

Hi everyone, I'm just sitting here doing some work and realized something. I should be able to reduce my keystrokes a LOT by writing some macros that would allow me to "quick change" my fonts in OpenOffice. I'm doing some research right now, but I never learned VB (which, I assume, OpenOfficeBasic is a derrivitave of) so I'm starting cold. Has anyone out there written some macros for OpenOffice? All I need is the ability to switch quickly between: English, Greek, and Hebrew. I'm not sure how to start. Like I said, I'm doing the research, but any hints and/or examples you all could share would be WONDERFUL. Thanks everyone, Wes
