Hi All, Ok....so it isn't a Linux question, but... In a couple of weeks, I'm going to be building a jumpstart server at work. Can someone point me to the docs for this? I went to the SUN website and found a 240 page pdf file about setting up a jumpstart server. It was REALLY hard to follow. Any help would be appreciated. TIA... -Chuck

KVM to SUN converter??

I'm not sure what I am talking about. I know that the terminal for my SUN ULTRA1 is different than the terminal for my DELL PC. I have purchased a IOGEAR KVM switch. I would like to include the SUN machine in the set of computers that can share my one keyboard, mouse and terminal. What do I order which will make this possible? Ken Jones of Fitchburg.

CentOS 4.7 webserver help

Heya - I reformatted my server and installed CentOS, but somehow I've fscked things up. I have a heterogeneous network that is about 40% winxp, 40% amigaos/morphos, and this server. In addition to the web stuff, I've considered making it a PDC for the win machines, but that's maybe just a dream. For a few days I could reach it, but now I can't, and from the server itself localhost doesn't seem to be working. It would take someone more familiar with linux minutes to straighten things out probably, but I just don't have a lot of time. I live in Sutton, about 10 miles from Worcester down Rt 146. I'm usually around Sat afternoons or Sundays, and usually have food and beer around, but not a lot of money. Thanks, everyone. I have learned allot. I have eight computers in my home office. One is a SUN ULTRA 1, the rest are various makes and models of PC desktop machines. On these I have Windows plus Linux (Aurora and Red Hat Fedora. Why do I have these machines? That's what my wife asks. Maybe in my dotage I have become victim to a hoarding syndrome I am trying to get organized so I purchased a "IOGEAR 8-Port KVM Switch Kit, PS/2,with KVM Cables (GCS78KIT)" from amazon.com. They gave me free shipping and handling. My conclusion after reading this thread is that I need one "13W3-to-VGA" adapter to connect the ULTRA to the KVM switch. Stephen Thamel has one available. Doug, you are correct. My ULTRA 1 has a "funny" 25 pin sized connector with 13 pins. My mouse plugs into the keyboard. If I could get the terminal to work thru the kvm switch it would not be too bad to have a second keyboard and mouse on my desk. I can use VNCviewer if necessary, but I would prefer a "real" connection. Is there an adaptor between kvm and the "funny" terminal? What is it called? odd entry in /etc/passwd

So I just found an odd entry in /etc/passwd on one of my servers: +:::::: Of course I'm not running tripwire on it so I can't be assured of the last time I edited the file / did anything to edit it. etc/shadow doesn't have the entry but shadow is only checked if the second field is x, right? I'm running Suse and I've been using yast lately, could that have anything to do with it? I hope it does as I really hope I don't have to run a full audit on the box. tia -- Eric Martin

Keyboard and mouse repeatedly disconnect/reconnect

Tonight I am being reminded several times per hour that something weird is happening here. I have a mouse and keyboard USB disconnect problem that has been hanging around for a couple of years now. Across the room where my old computer sits quietly running, the red light in the mouse keeps flashing as it goes off then comes back on, even though this computer is idle. So I checked /var/log/messages, and sure enough, messages appear there that correspond with the times the red light flashes. Same thing often used to happen with the USB keyboard, too. Now I'm using a PS2 keyboard in this PC, which does not result in these disconnect messages, but still seeing these messages about the mouse. Sometimes this happens over and over again many times within a short period of time (several times/minute). There were lockup problems related to this problem when I was running Etch, after this keyboard or mouse USB disconnect thing had disconnected and reconnected some large number of times, I think it was well over a hundred times. Keyboard and/or mouse would no longer accept input, forcing me to have to ssh in and reboot it, or if I couldn't do that, had to hard reboot. Restart X is not enough to fix this. This has happened with various different mice and keyboards. So we installed a USB card, thinking this might be a hardware problem with the USB ports, but no, the same problem crops up no matter if the mouse or keyboard is plugged into the card, or into the USB ports in the case. Then we thought it might be a problem in Etch, so we upgraded to Lenny. But it still happens. Also happens in Ubuntu. The latest issue (see below) was a long string of these disconnect/reconnects, then a lockup of the mouse and I believe keyboard. Had to ssh in to stop the problem (by shutting down). This new build is using my used hard drive, but I don't think that is relevant. Below is only a small piece of var/log/messages, where the problem seemed to change after several hours from the familiar mouse disconnect/reconnect, to something else. This PC is only a few weeks old, now with a fresh install of Lenny in its own partition. Only the hard drive and the DVD drive are not brand-new. I possibly (maybe?) solved the keyboard issue in this PC by specifying the correct type of keyboard in Settings > Peripherals > Keboard (in KDE). Not sure if it's really gone or not. But now getting hundreds of messages about the mouse, as above. Computer 3. It's also happening in my daughter's computer, that has the exact same motherboard and almost the same CPU as computer 2. Hers is running Ubuntu 8.04 2.6.24-23.52 (running Gnome), just updated last week. She has never complained about any lockup problem, but she reboots more often than I do. Linux from Scratch - anyone use this?

As a recent newcomer to this group ... I've lurked about a bit .. but now I have a question: Has anyone used or is anyone using the Linux from Scratch project? I've built several systems through it -- however none exist today ; Mainly it has been a learning experience for me. WPI Exchange Help

So I'm new to the Linux community and I could use a little help. I'm trying to setup exchange to work through Evolution Mail on Ubuntu 8.10. I can't seem to set it up correctly. I feel like i have all the necessary info like the OWA URL, which I think is https://exchange.wpi.edu/owa/ . Please advise as to whether I need to specify the DOMAIN\User which doesn't work or if there is a better client for setting up exchange at WPI. Thanks, Ship

gl over ssh

Hi all, I've run into snag with using ssh x-forwarding and GL. I'm trying to run a program which uses GL remotely. The program runs and the GUI pops up with sliders and such visible, but the GL part of the gui is not displaying. everything else with the program is functional. When i start the program from the prompt i did notice the following error, libGL error: XF86DRIAuthConnection failed libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering and on the side that displays the program i see the following error in the xorg.log file (each line represents each attempt at running the program), failed to authenticate 8 failed to authenticate 9 I've google'd around and haven't much useful information. i do have write permissions to /dev/dri. Also local GL programs display just fine, this only happens with ssh forwarding (i've tried ssh -X and ssh -Y). Both machines are ubuntu, the display machine is ubuntu 8.10 and the other is 8.04. They both use the stock xorg.conf file, which is pretty minimal, i'm guessing that's because xorg tried to determine everything at runtime. If anyone has any hints or suggestions, let me know, thanks. Thanks, -- brad

The student organization i belong to has recently been entrusted with a retired dell power edge 2650 rack mount server. Me and another club member are going to be in charge of setting up and maintaining the server. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of information i'm simply not aware of and i was wondering if anyone with IT experience would be willing to give me a few pointers. My current plan is to install a minimal system (prefferably debian based) install the services i need (LAMP) and then harden the box with a set of restrictive iptables rules and keep up to date with security updates.

Hi All, I have floated the following idea at my church and it has been well received. Seek donations of older computers, have the youth group refurbish them, sell them at a low price with user training and support to seniors. The money raised will go to the youth group. The systems would be optimized for email and web surfing. Naturally Linux would be the OS. Is this a crazy idea? Has anyone done something similar? apt + version control

Hi All, I'm trying to find a solution to a problem. I would like tie apt (or dpkg) to some kind of version control system so every time you install/remove a package you much annotate why you're doing so. The reason i'd like to have a system like this is because i co-maintain a linux machine with a few other people and we'd like to keep a running tally as to who installed what packages and why (since the package gets unwieldy after a while). Does anyone know of a system like this? The closest thing i was able to find was something called pkgwatch, which is a package of scripts which wraps around apt and rpm; one of it's features is to diff the list of packages after every call to apt-get which will get the job done. Does anyone know of anything similar? Thanks, -- Brad

Screen resolution on my laptop - HELP!

I am trying to adjust the screen resolution on my Toshiba Portege 7140CT. I'm sure it's an adjustment in the xorg.conf file, but I don't know enough to do it properly. As a matter of fact, I tried following online instructions only to have no resolution - only lines and a frozen machine. I need this done in the next couple days, please, and would be willing to drive a reasonable distance to have you look at it. no sound from ubuntu

Hi, first post here! I'm a part-time Linux user, with experience on Mandrake and Fedora. After installing ubuntu 8.10, I find that my computer is very quiet, even when I don't want it to be! The only sound I can get is the beep when the arrow keys reach a limit, such as scrolling to the end of a list, or the end of a command line. The master volume is high, I have permission to Use Audio Devices, nothing is muted, am I missing something basic??? I've been to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems> and lots of links from there. Learned a lot, accomplished little. :) I can turn off the beep (alert) in Sound Preferences, but I can't turn on other sounds, (Rhythmbox, youtube, etc.) Some info I picked up is shown below. Few things from last night's meeting

A couple of things from last night's meeting / dinner that might interest everybody: [IRC] I know people have mentioned it before but WLUG has an irc channel. We're on freenode and it's #wlug-ma. IRC stands for Internet Relay chat and is used for sync communication between people. Check out this wikipedia link [1] for more info. get a copy of Xchat (irc client) and when you open xchat it should prompt you for a server. Click freenode. Next it may ask you for a channel to join, type in #wlug-ma. If it doesn't ask for a channel to join, type "/join #wlug-ma" in the command bar at the bottom. [PGP Keys] Some people mentioned that their pgp keys are expiring in roughly 2 months so we need to have a keysigning again. If your key is expiring soon I would suggest generating a new key now and signing your new key with your old key. This will allow the web of trust to extend to your new key. For generating new keys, there are a few schools of thought. Some people prefer to have their master key be unlimited and generate new subkeys every so often (1/year, etc). This way signatures go to the master key but the subkeys can always be revoked if there's a problem. Others generate a key pair with a 3-5 year expiration and just get signatures again as they need them. The thing to keep in mind is how possible is it that my key will be cracked [expiration] years from now given technology. I think the current plan is to have the key signing in two months (please correct me if I'm wrong) so I'll be sending more stuff out as it gets closer. A couple of WLUG members had been interested in GIMP a few months back. A presentation I gave to the group last Fall may have been effective that it could have been, since we couldn't get the big monitors working in the meeting room. Lenovo S10 Netbook

I picked one of these up at Circuit City last week and am looking to speed it up where ever possible. (Reviewed below). It has a normal SATA II drive in it and I know an SSD drive would significantly speed it up, but don't want to spend any more $ on it. http://www.trustedreviews.com/storage/review/2008/05/08/OCZ-64GB-SATA-II-SS… has pretty graphs to compare. I weaseled a RAM upgrade out of my hard ware guy so I have 1.5gigs in it now (max'd). I ran speed tests between booting off the SATA II drive and the same install via USB 2.0 thumb drive and boot times were around 50 seconds for either. I know there are SSD ExpressCards for cheap (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820191057) but I read that the ExpressCards are really just USB 2.0 speeds anyway so I wouldn't see any difference from my thumb drive test. Short of compiling my own kernel (which I never can seem to do right), any other advise on how to speed up a netbook's boot time? I will say once booted, everything runs pretty well, though I'm sure I wouldn't mind more speed then, too! grazie! Mike Review: Stopped in to Circuit City today and (impulsively?) bought a Lenovo IdeaPad S10. I've been looking for something to waste my money on/replace the Dell I bought that I ended up not liking and turning over to my wife, so it wasn't extremely impulsive, just a little impulsive. Anyway, it was 10% of the normal price, which brought it down to $370. Not a great deal at that price since online it is like $350 or so, but the one I got has twice as much RAM and hard drive space as online numbers, plus no shipping. Specs: Intel Atom N270 1.6ghz CPU (Intel has returned to multi-threading) 10.2 inch screen 1GIG RAM 160Gig SATA II Hard drive Wired/Wireless NIC cards 3 Cell Lithium-Ion 2.64lbs No CDROM (not a big deal as I have a Lenovo USB CDROM drive anyway) The size: possibly the perfect size...small, light weight without being tiny. 10.2 inch 1024x600 screen and not an impossibly tiny keyboard (though obviously not full sized). It is about the size of a larger hard cover book. The OS: Comes with Windows XP and it ran very well...applications opened fast, web surfing was responsive and I could open several apps at once without much hit to performance. After 27 different questions about my loyalty to Bill Gates, I decided it was time to upgrade. Concerned that the new hardware may have issues with older versions of Linux, I jumped right into an as-yet-to-be released version of Ubuntu (9.04). Booted right up, answered a couple questions and installed like a champ...saw the disk, the RAM, the wireless card, everything...during the install. Upon reboot into Linux though, nothing...it just wouldn't boot. "No OS found". I thought my partitioning might be screwing me up, so I let the installer pick, but to no avail. I booted off live CD's, but when I mounted and chroot'd into my install, the install didn't even see my /dev/sda. At one point I finally got to a grub > boot, but still wouldn't boot to the OS. I tried a Debian 4.0 install, but that didn't see either the wired or wireless nics. Similar to the Ubuntu, Fedora 10 installed, but would never boot. So I tried a Ubuntu 8.10 install and everything was fine! Installed with my partitions (/boot, /, /home and swap) and all is well in the world. Wired, wireless, SATA, screen resolution....everything works straight from the install. I'm still testing and upgrading but over all this is a great netbook and takes to Ubuntu Linux straight away, and for less than $400 a great addition to my daily commute.

Hi All, I took a trip on DirectAir to Florida this past weekend. I flew out of Worcester on a direct flight to Punta Gorda, Fl. I wish I could say it was for pleasure but that would not be true :( Anyway the airline is a public charter owned by Virgin America and operated by Jet Blue. What does this have to do with Linux? Each seat had a monitor with a gaming remote control. The passengers had the choice of watching TV or movies. They could also listen to many different radio stations or select by artist. I found it refreshing to put on some Jimmy Hendricks and Frank Zappa. The last, or was it first, option available were games. Our friend Tux appeared in two of the games and the rest were available on all modern distributions of Linux. I spent a fair amount of time playing Doom. When you board the plane it feels very modern. There is a pleasant blue glow to the cabin. First and second class is separated by clear Plexiglas so the cabin feels very open. The mandatory speech about safety is done by video and is appropriately smart-alecky. All in all it was a great experience. Look them up if you need to travel on the east coast. To be honest, I think the overwhelming majority of non-technical students will not want to get involved with Linux, even with Ubuntu... even some of my fellow computer science majors will only use Linux for coursework and refuse to touch it otherwise, mainly because they don't want to have to worry about "learning new software" or dealing with the fact that, in some cases, there aren't enough drivers to support all their software. Even Ubuntu can be a real pain in terms of out-of-the-box hardware compatibility, especially with laptops (which for most students serve as their main machine of use). I'm sort of sad to admit that many of the kids I go to school with are, in almost all cases, looking for the easiest means to accomplish anything; anything that requires too much effort is bound to be ignored by the majority. I picked up Linux out of genuine interest, and because I knew it served as a very good platform for development (and thus a worthwhile thing to use), and especially because of it's compliance with my (mild) disdain of proprietary software. Also, because I look up to Linus Torvalds, and Richard Stallman, and all those great guys... but, I don't know anyone else at my school who shares my enthusiasm. Perhaps its a bit better at a purely technical school (like WPI)... In short, if students aren't pursuing Linux out of their own interest (or at least out of necessity), I wouldn't try much beyond what you've already attempted in order to get kids more interested... I don't mean to be discouraging or pessimistic, but I really think your efforts are better spent aiding students who've developed an interest in running Linux on their own, as opposed to trying to turn them on to it. System 76: computers with Ubuntu pre-installed

Cory Doctorow recently got a new laptop and he gave a brief review of it in his most recent podcast. When he switched from MacOS to Linux he decided it was no longer worth paying the premium for Apple hardware. I think he said he went to IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads after that, and he's comparing his new laptop to his previous Thinkpad. He said the new laptop was a bit heavier than the Thinkpad, and he had some minor issues with the keyboard layout, but it came with Intrepid Ibex installed, and he was impressed that everything just worked, including his T-Mobile (London) 3G cell modem. Hi Everyone, (1) Thanks a million for all of the help, especially the link to the fantastic tutorial, posted by James Gray, I think. I am in the process of installing hardy updates, and it appears that openoffice.org 3.0 is part of what's being installed, so it looks like everything is working perfectly. (2) To Greg: yes, I could ask students to submit all of their assignments in .doc or .rtf format (or even open office format), but they most wouldn't listen. Many can't figure out how to save to any format but .docx. It's a perpetual hassle to nag them. Besides that, I get many files from colleagues, professors at my college and other colleges and universities, as well as the Mass. Dept. of Education, and increasingly, most are in Office 2007 formats. It's hard to convert the whole world to linux. (3) Here is a new issue for everyone who is interested in commenting. I am a mathematician but besides math ,I also teach a computer literacy course each semester. You would all be proud: I do my best every semester to convert students to the linux religion, or at least to make them aware of linux and the evils of Microsoft. As OpenOffice 3.0 is a DIFERENT branch from 2.4, the quickest way is to download and install 3.0. It is made to run in parallel and to allow you the chance to migrate anything that the install may have forgotten.All the data that is in your home directory will still be there and during the install you will have the option to use your old settings. problem upgrading openoffice.org to version 3.0

Hi Everyone, [GREETINGS:] I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 running Ubuntu 8.04, Hardy Heron. I bought it from Dell, preloaded with Ubuntu, at about the time Dell started selling linux preloaded. I'm knowledgable about computers relative to the general public but probably will be a perpetual "newbie" to this crowd since, for example, I have never learned how to use the comamnd line well. I started using linux seriously when distros like Ubuntu came out that, supposedly, took care of most of the technical details so that a "normal user" could use linux without spending all his free time troubleshooting and reading manuals. Part of what made me "convert" was fantastic folks like LUG members; I love the linux community and am grateful for the help WLUG members have offered at times. [THE PROBLEM:] Unfortunately, I am at my wit's end to upgrade OpenOffice from 2.4.1 to version 3 - which I need to open .docx and .xlsx files that my students at Springfield College constantly send me. I've been wanting to do this for months and haven't had any luck looking in online help files. The openoffice.org help files direct me to options that simply aren't there. For example: "Choose Help- Check For Updates to check manually" - but there is no such option in my help menu ! "To check for updates automatically, Choose Tools- Options - OpenOffice.Org- Online Update" - again, the promised option, "Online Update" , simply isn't there. I tried to uninstall and reinstall OpenOffice.org in "add/remove programs" , but the default package manager (adept?synaptic? it doesn't say which it is, but I think it is synaptic) won't let me uninstall the "base package" as other packages require it. I could try to upgrade the whole distro to Ubuntu 8.10, but am reluctant totake the risk of crashing the computer and feel it shouldn't really be necessary. [HELP?] Can anyone help ? Solutions comprehensible to a "perpetual" newbie will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Andrew Perry

Folks, thank you for past help. Here's another one... I have an HP Laser Jet 1020 black and white printer attached to a PC running Windows XP Professional. It is my home network shared printer. I have no problem using it from other Windows machines. I am having no luck using it from my Linux boxes. (a Fedora and an Aurora). The CUPS package does not have a driver for this printer. I understand that this laser printer is a bit different from other HP laser jets, but I do not understand how this relates to my problem. Without me going into all the details of my guessing game do any of you know exactly what I should do? Ken Jones

Hey Gang, So last night I'd mentioned as an alternative to a NSLU2 was one of these HP T571X machines that can be found on eBay for around $100. Currently the HP has a very stripped down Debian install on a 32GB SSD. Last night the box was stressed all night and didn't crash (this was after tuning down the DMA) Also I've put up pictures of a "fitPC" that my other coworker is playing with. Both of these machines are going to be used for home automation stuff. In fact the guy who bought the HP is using an Adrino with a home built circuit to read the information off of his pool chemistry controller. I've posted some pictures on my picasa site so people can see how it's all setup, with a standard hard drive for comparison. I know I haven't been ot a meeting in a *long* time, but I do hope to make one this spring if I can. Right now I'm playing with Arduino controller boards on my Ubuntu desktop. Fun blinky LEDs, etc. http://arduino.cc http://www.ladyada.com (where I got my parts) http://www.sparkfun.com http://www.evilmadscientist.com (lots of neat stuff) And loads of others in google. It's pretty neat to play with, and it's interesting moving from the IDE (which has a sucky editor) to a more pure Emacs/Makefile driven setup. I figure maybe I could come and demo this at some point. Any interest? Loosely Linux related, since I'll be using an Ubuntu LiveCD and thumb drive to setup and demo the environment. John

Looking for Trixbox and A2 Billing project support (Simon)

I have a project consisting of setting up a prepaid phone card operation using Linux server, Trixbox and A2 Billing sofware. I have Trixbox running on a Centos Server right now, but there is more work to be done. I dont know if anyone has experience in this kind of setup or in VOIP area. Last week I was stuck. I had a broken SUN sparc64 ULTRA ONE. I asked WLUG for help. John Stoffel rose to the bait. My SUN now works better than ever. (We installed four fast ethernet ports thereby replacing a broken old fashioned eth0.) Thank you (publicly) John. I have another question. I am a retired computer programmer. I ended my professional days as a Senior Software Engineer for CISCO Systems in 2004. I am getting bored. (and my 401k is getting hit). I am curious as to whether I can contribute to an Open Source project. How do I join an open source community? Are they all parts of large corporations or schools? I just read that CISCO is embracing the open source idea. Oh course, I shall get hold of them. Do any of you have some knowledge on this subject? Ken Jones

Hyper Terminal into SUN SPARC ULTRA??

I still have not solved how to get my AURORA LINUX package to see the added SBUS quad ethernet card in my SUN SPARC ULTRA --so---> I am after some of the files that I have stored on this SAMBA server. I figured I could use Hyper Terminal. I have an appropriate cross over cable with a 24 pin connector to plug into the SPARC's Terminal A or Terminal B. I can configure Hyper Terminal on my PC running WINDOWS XP. I am stuck figuring out how to get the SUN to activate this asynchronous interface. Any suggestions? Problem Sparc ULTRA 1 not seeing SBus Fast Ethernet

I have a Sparc Ultra 1 which has been running flawlessly since 2003 running Ansel 2.4.20-2.3sparc. Last week after a nine day power outage the system no longer activates eth0, the TPE ethernet interface. I installed a --> Sun 501-5443 x1049A quad 4-port SBus Fast Ethernet card The operating system does not recognize this new hardware. This system has been running so flawlessly for at least four years that I have forgotten much of what I had learned about Aurora.(I am an elderly man by high tech standards). The little green input light corresponding to the port to which I have attached the fast ethernet cable does illuminate. Where do I start? Ken Jones

Oops! I just looked inside my ULTRA SPARC ONE. The ethernet I/O appears to be embedded in the big mother board. That is not good if I am correct. Any suggestions?? My SUN ULTRA 1 has lost its eth0 card circuit. I have purchased a Sun 501-5443 X1049A Quad 4-Port SBus Fast Ethernet Card for my SUN ULTRA 1 running Aurora. The original fast ethernet circuitry is part of the SystemCard. I do not wish to replace the system card. Will I have a problem finding a driver? Ken Jones

The other half's XP installation has been OKAY. I have learned to us WINDOWS. Meanwhile my SUN ULTRA running as an Aurora SPARC SAMBA file server since 1993 has been chugging along just fine. I live in Fitchburg. We have been without power for nine days. 110 volts came up yesterday evening. Much to my chegrin my SUN was unhappy. I used a rescueCD to boot. Hi I haven't used GnuCash but I hear its a great program. Has anyone used Openbravo. I just installed it on a local Ubuntu server. I would like to move the instance to an EC2 machine. Does anyone have experience with Amazon EC2 installations? I have an Ubuntu EC2 machine running but need further assistance. Fedora 10 and sound

I decided to install fedora 10. I understand that my laptop is old (bought in 2002). Fedora 8 had problems installing due to 256M of ram but ran fine once I got it installed. I've since upgraded the memory but fedora 10 can't play audio. Any music file I've tried lags horribly. Is there any configuration I can modify to fix the problem? Alternatively can the audio server be disabled?

Wrapping up a combined BackupPC/BACULA project - set policies and procedures - document - test restore 2. Automatically deleting old email

Is it possible in Evolution (or another email client) to configure messages to be deleted after a specified period without manual intervention? I have a few folders set for mailing lists and shopping offers, but the contents are irrelevant after a few days. Samba config help

I wil PAY someone to come to my house and help me configure Samba on my CentOS server. I have three Windows machines set up with an admin user and a non-admin user. I don't really care right now if the non-admin user can access my server, I just want seamless access as admin so I can transfer stuff for my websites without using floppies or CDs. I have lots of money. No, wait, I *don't* have lots of money :) but maybe we can work something out. If I can make my server an ldap server and set up domain stuff, cool. If not, whatever works. I also have a Pegasos running MorpOS (which has its own copy of Samba), and a couple of Amiga 3000s which could either be setup with smbfs (which I had working at one point), or they could just FTP to the linux box (assuming I can get SMB access there from the Windoze side). Hello all, I'd like to know what Wlug'ers are recommending for mythtv hardware these days. I already have a Hauppauge PVR-350 TV capture card. I'd like to build a low-profile quiet mythtv box that I can put next to a standard TV (not hi-def). What do people recommend? What about disk space? Ideally, I'd like something about the size of the mac-mini, but I don't think I can use a mac-mini as a mythtv backend. I already have a mythbuntu box, but it's big, noisy, and not suitable for what I'm looking for. Any ideas?? -- -Chuck

I loaded this software onto my laptop, but unfortunately, I cannot get dual monitors working, and that means the projector won't work with my laptop in its current state. If/when I do get it working, I'll bring my laptop to the meeting, but it is not looking promising. SSH problems

I have an outward facing ssh box at work that is currently being attacked. somebody's going through a dictionary attack of usernames; currently he or she is on abl. I can't block the IP Address because the ip is different with each username. Does anybody have any good ideas on how to stop this? I'm probably going to move the ssh port to some random high number to get rid of this, but I don't know yet if anybody else ssh's in besides me. Funky LVM hack we talked about...

Hey Gang, For those of you at the meeting who don't remember, Kevin had a 32GB flash disk that had a controller that had a built in understanding of FAT32. Thus formatting it as any other file system would work until you actually wrote to it then it would go insane. I postulated that one way to solve this would be to use LVM or MD, however when we tried this I hit a road block in that pvcreate won't let you pvcreate a regular old file, you need a device file, the same thing with MD. I finally managed to get it to work without having to hand add any devices into /dev... here's how... For my testing I created 4 100MB files using the command: dd if=/dev/zero of=part[1-4] bs=1024k count=100 This is what Kevin would need to do to on his flash drive... 1. Create 16, 2GB files on the flash drive named part[1-16] 2. Create loopback to file mappings using the command "losetup /dev/loop1 part1", repeat for all devices Also note, with this you could setup loopback encryption on these devices... If you suddenly find yourself without a loopback device issue the command in /dev "./MAKEDEV loop" However, I think udev will probably take care of it behind the scenes. 3. pvcreate /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 ... 4. vgcreate vgHACK /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 ... At this point if you issue a "vgdisplay" you should see how many (PE) physical extents you have. 5. lvcreate -n volume_name -l num_of_extends vgHACK If you use -L you can specify 300M, etc. Also you can specify how many stripes you want the data to be written in, which is handy if your 16 devices were on seperate disk controllers... Also you don't have to use all the extends in one logical volume, you could create lots of little volumes. 6. mkfs.ext3 /dev/vgHACK/volume_name 7. mount filesystem, sit back in bemusement that linux gives you the flexibility to do such things. Now... while were at it, if instead of LVM, if you wanted to use MD, this is what you'd do. If you have the lvm stuff from above, unmount the filesystem and issue a vgremove vgHACK it'll warn about active volumes, blah, blah... This command will take loop1,loop2,loop3,loop4 and put them into a 4 member RAID0 with no spare. mdadm -C /dev/md0 -l 0 -n 4 /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 This command will create a raid5 out of the four devices without a spare. mdadm -C /dev/md0 -l 0 -n 4 /dev/loop1 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop4 It'll go off and build the array, now just format and mount and you're set to go. cat /proc/mdstat to see what it's upto. I was thinking of other insane things that Kevin can do with his 3 32GB flash disks. He could create 3 logical volumes each containing 16 members and then create an raid5 MD device using the logical volume members... He could create 3 16 member raid0's and then create a raid 5 out of them. He could install ZFS on top of fuse and then put all 48 devices into a zpool... Hi! I had imperfect luck googling the best/easiest answer to this one. Maybe I just need a good "yum book/tutorial". I may have solved (poorly or OK) my "simulated challenge" (planning for an RHCE exam) which is: Let's say I had no Internet, but I did have RedHat RPM's on a local server, so doing a new-install with JUST the first boot cd, then linux askmethod (chose ftp/nfs/http, whatever the server's offering) And did the install using network'd RPMs. Later, say I wanna "yum install" something-else missed earlier, without manually pointing to RPMs. (keep using yum, without Internet). Out of the box, yum didnt adjust itself to my "askmethod" location. Tis on the RHCE exam prep list: "configure to update/install pkgs from remote repositories using yum or pup" I'll attempt (poorly,toomuch...) to finetune a more specific QUESTION: .....................How to modify the yum (config or yum.repos.d/files) IN ORDER TO: either REPLACE ( I managed this) or ADD TO (more intelligently) to use a local-network source for "base RPMs" (whatever comes on the .iso CD/DVD's , a likely RPM stash/set) Here's one answer that might be OK in the isolated situation: a) Comment OUT primary line in /etc/yum.repos.d/*file within [base] (ymmv, "baseurl" or "mirrorlist" line, look for comments/fallbacks) then b) add ONE LINE "baseurl=ftp:...", whatever the server's offering. CNR updating?

I put linspire on a laptop many months ago (better support for my wireless card). I would have expected some kind of notification that software updates are available for applications, but I see nothing indicating that I should update things. I'm using ubuntu on other systems, so I'm familiar with that update method. What do I do to poll for updates with CNR? Thanks, Bill

I'd like to set up Raid-1 on my computer. I have 2 500Gig hds, one of which is empty, and one of which has data (that I want to keep). I found this guide, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Raid (I use Ubuntu), and liked the "super simple md" recipe, but I'm not sure how to do this so that I don't loose data. (I searched around, but the only thing I found required the alternate install CD, which I have issues with.) Any help would be appreciated. Simeon MacMillen

AIX 5.3 Question

Hello, At work, I have an RS6000 running AIX 5.3. The on-board NIC controller failed. I installed a dual-port Intel Pro 10/100/1000 NIC card. When I start the server, the Intel card isn't recognized. the request came to me via a friend: Hello hello, I'm looking for working PCs that are no longer needed by their owners. We have many students that could benefit from the hands on learning that can only be made available through private donations. As one of three instructors here at the Shriver Job Corps Center , I would personally see to all systems being cleaned of private information by wiping all internal hard drives using DOD, (Department Of Defense), Standards. Each operating PC would then be entered into our training program for our students as a break/fix computer. If you know of anyone who may be interested in participating for the sake of our students, please pass along this note. Although all donations will be greatly appreciated it would not be a tax write-off but you will be able to sleep better knowing that you have helped aspiring technicians learn a trade and become active working participants in this great country of ours. Hello, KDE 3.5.9 died on me. I installed some updates via the adept updater and after rebooting, I get dropped into run-level 3 (which I actually prefer). When I type startkde, which is in /usr/bin, I get the following errors: Xsetroot : unable to open display '' Xset : unable to open display "" Xsetroot : unable to open display '' Startkde : Starting up. . . Startkde : Running kpersonalizer. . . Kwin : X server can not connect to Kpersonalizer can not connect to X server : Kpersonalizer can not connect to X server : Kpersonalizer can not connect to X server : If I type startx instead, the gnome window manager starts up fine. Hello everyone, my name is Markus McLaughlin, I am both a member of the Fedora Project and a Linux blogger with a blog at http://linuxglobe.wordpress.com. About 5 years ago, I became a fan of Linux but did not actually use it until I bought my first Mac, which was a Mini, I now use an Intel iMac and I run Fedora 9, Ubuntu 8.04, and openSUSE in VMware Fusion. I want to reach out to other Linux hobbyists AND writers who want to promote Linux. What I want to do with my blog is to add other Writers who want to both promote Linux and help those who don't know what to do with it, with columns. Hopefully, Red Hat, Novell, and other companies will want to help fund a major Linux Magazine right here in North America. I want to help fill a niche that needs to be filled and HELP those who can't afford a Windows/Mac computer have free tools, internet access, and an inexpensive used laptop/desktop. Anyway, if anyone here has any ideas on what we can do together to promote Linux in this part of Massachusetts, PLEASE contact me. My computer failed the firewall tests -the troubleshooting material recommended the following: Allow UDP destination ports 5198-5199 between Internet and PC in both directions Allow TCP (source port any, destination port 5200) from PC to Internet What security risks do I introduce by doing this? I am ready to buy a capture card, re-dedicate some PC hardware and commit to building a Myth box. I know this was covered back in 2003 by Tim Keller, but my lack of recall has me missing details of his excellent presentation. Any others think this is a good idea for a meeting topic? Hello, I had mounted an external usb drive /dev/sdb2 onto /media/sdb2 and was coping several mega-bytes of files to it when I got some I/O errors. Then I noticed that all of my /dev/sdb* files were missing from /dev. When I do an ls -al /dev, all the files are there except the sdb files. How can I get these back? Hello, my name is Mark McLaughlin, I started a computer club in Hudson which extends to Marlboro. I hooked up with you because I am very interested in KDE 4 and want to learn more about how to make linux work for me since I am a writer/enthusiast not a programmer. I am getting better at GIMP and re-learning my MS Office skills with OpenOffice, but, I like to learn inkscape, scribus, do more with KompoZer, and do some multimedia as well I could use advice on how to make my computer club function well and if my club and yours could mingle a bit here and there on occasion when Fedora 9 and KDE 4.1 finally is available. I love Fedora, I feel it could catch up to Ubuntu and maybe surpass it with some new features. Fedora Disapointment

I understand that my laptop is old. Every time I've upgraded Red Hat/Fedora, I've liked the new system until Fedora 8. I didn't always upgrade. I skipped Fedora 7 since the live CD didn't boot on my laptop but Fedora 6 ran great. Fedora 8 is a dog with my small amount of memory (256M). I'm thinking I'll buy more memory but it disappoints me that Fedora runs poorly with 256M. (I would buy a new laptop but I'm just not impressed with the current offerings.) Getting the Edimax ew-7108pcg working on Xubuntu 6.06 LTS

Hello All, I found this card on newegg.com for cheap money and the company claimed Linux support, so I got it. So far, I have it working on a WEP test network, but the driver package does come with WPA-supplicant bits. I assume that works as well. Folks online claim it works out of the box on Ubuntu 7.10, but my laptop didn't do well with the newer Xubuntus, so I had to make do. Note, out-of-the-box, the rt61 driver provided by Xubuntu 6.06 LTS throws a stack trace and can wedge your system. I found that you need to build the company's rt61 driver. Here was my procedure for 6.06 LTS: 1) Install gcc and friends,if you haven't already. 2) Update to the latest kernel packages. 3) Install the linux-header packages for your platform (I used the 386 packages). 4) Download the driver zip for the ew-7108pcg from the Edimax website's support area, unpack it, and the unpack the tar ball inside. 5) cd into the IS_Linux_STA_6x_D_1.1.1.0 directory 6) run make 7) Ignore all the compiler warnings ;) 9) run sudo make install 10) Add "alias ra0 rt61" to /etc/modules.conf or into your preferred location in /etc/modules.d if it wasn't automatically added. 11) Add correct bits to /etc/network/interfaces So, that being said (I am typing this email via the card now): 1) On boot, the card comes up, but does not go online. Ifconfig has configured the interface, but iwconfig shows no essid or key configured. 2) I opened the Applications->System->Networking tool. The tool shows the interface as active. I can "activate/deactivate", but likewise iwconfig shows no configuration. I can only bring the interface up via running "sudo ifup ra0". My wife's probably not going to go for that ;). Does anyone have any ideas about what plumbing I am missing to get automatic configuration? Thanks! -Adam

Information for Linux newbies?

As i mentioned at the meeting this past week I am going to be giving a seminar for linux newbies and would like to pull from people that know better then i do on what i should teach people. What i would like to know is: What are some things that you wish you had known as a newbie? Think back to your very first linux install and any short-cuts, tips, tricks, and gatcha's that would make peoples first experience easier. There is a lot of windows resentment after the slow trainwreck that is vista, so lets see if we can get a few new converts! P.S. one of the big concerns for a few people that i have talked to has been games, if anyone has a list of new-ish games that work or any tips specific to making the most recent generation work under linux, that would make things much easier ;)

reboot problem

At the meeting before last, I asked about a problem I'm having with the computer occasionally going to a black screen with no disk activity on reboot, right after the grub menu goes away. Overnight memtest showed no errors, I put a different vid card in, and still had the black screen problem. One of the things someone mentioned was to test the power supply. Recently, I had a few hard lockups and a couple of spontaneous reboots. So, how do I test my power supply, other than replacing it and seeing if the problem goes away? Or is that evidence enough to change it ASAP? According to lm-sensors, voltages are fine, and I've even sat and watched gkrellm for long periods of time - they look stable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Greg

Hello Everyone! So, I have to teach myself myself XML, XSL, et al., for work... (The VB stuff is in the background for now!) I started playing with XML yesterday, and have gotten pretty far along. But... Hi All, At work I have a SunFire v245 (Sparc) running SunOs 5.10, which I guess is Solaris 10. When I put a CD in the drive, it doesn't get mounted. I checked to see if 'vold' was running and it was. What else should I check for? I'm not too familiar with Solaris, so any help is appreciated. TIA, -Chuck

Xinerama issues with Fedora Core 8...

Hey Gang, I had a perfectly working Fedora Core 6 system and I had to go mess things up... I backed up my whole system and did a clean install of Fedora Core 8, only to find that my >old< xorg.conf config doesn't work anymore... I was able to get a config finally working, but only on a single monitor. Here's my setup: Screen 1: DELL LCD panel connected to an onboard AGP intel video card Screen 2: DELL LCD panel connected to a PCI ATI Radeon video card Now, I have config files that'll drive one or the other, but not both. The moment I enable Xinerama, the X server crashes with a signal 11. As far as I can tell... Xinerama support is totally borked in Fedora Core 8. Has anybody come across any solutions? Hello, I built a custom "gutsy gibbon" kernel, but I can't find the corresponding initrd.img file. There's a link in / that looks like this: initrd.img-> boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-generic. Shouldn't there be a new initrd.img file that was created when I built the new kernel or am I missing something? TIA, -- -Chuck

Linux Choix?

It has been a while. I tried getting our nonprofit (Worcester land conservation) to adopt Linux some years back. Problem I had back then was weak graphic options, publisher options, Quicken options, and a lack of a good answer to running ArcGIS. I was beaten back into M$. I want another crack at this. I am looking to take a spare laptop and install a Linux OS and OS apps. Previously, some years back, I used to use what are now Mandriva Linux installs. Coming back to this I see that there are dozens and dozens of options these days. What, if any, of the options do the WLUG folk prefer/recommend. Thanks so much, Colin

Apologies. Deepest even. Before anyone needs to chastise me I looked it up and OS X is more Next and other sources than Linux per se. Apparently Parallels on OS X will run Win and Lin, but the underlying OS is OS X and does not imply that ArcGIS would be stably emulated by a Linux machine emulating Win. Sorry. Where the heck is everything? http://tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/html/sect_03_01.html has a nice chart I think one thing that frustrates people is their relative path to everything...you can't cd /mike unless you're already in /home for instance. Ubuntu is the current poster child for Linux. You can buy Dell desktops, laptops and servers with Ubuntu pre-installed, and I think even HP offers the same. I use it as my primary work desktop, and dual boot it on my work laptop. It just works. Though I prefer Debian because I like to tinker, the latest version of Ubuntu does everything it needs to with little help. I did some digging and came across this: http://spanring.eu/blog/2006/07/02/arcgis-on-mac-os-x-2/ They were getting ArcGIS 9.X to run (well even) on MacOS X with Parallels; Now I am a born-again newbie but as I understand it OS X is a Linux derivative, and Parallels is a means of faking a Windows OS (XP etc.) on the Mac. Do folks know if this might mean there is some hope for a Linux install that can be rigged to run Arc? Thanks so much, PS ESRI's (producer of Arc) site is supremely unhelpful as they aren't interested in much other than server support for Linux and a basic reader function. Motherboard search tool?

Hi guys, I'm looking for a new system/motherboard for my home computer. But trying to dig through the steaming piles of crap out there to find the right board is painful. And I don't want to have to go and look at every single damn vendors site just to figure out what's available. Sigh... So does anyone know of a useful resource which compares motherboards and allows you to filter down the selection quickly and easily? Esp by features? So say I want: AM2 socket FireWire onboard 4gb > RAM potential Gigabit Ethernet >= 3 PCI slots 1 PCIe x16 >= 1 PCIe x1 or x4 How would I go about finding this easily? You'd think it would be simple, but no... it's a total pain. And of course I'm not totally sold on AMD, but I would like to support them since I like 64bit CPUs and the lack of hassle going over 4Gb of RAM, since I suspect that will be how I upgrade this system in the future, instead of getting more CPUs, etc. I've looked at ArsTechinca, Phoronix, LinuxBios (since I'd *love* to have a Linux BIOS for quicker boot times...), etc. But they're not that easy to figure out without spending way more time than I want. I'm starting to think I should just start coding up a Rails app to hold all this data and provide easy searches. Then I'd need to *find* all the data as well... whee! He and I work together at Cimtec Inc. We have a software application that runs on Unix. We are looking to migrate our application to Linux. Carl says that you may be able to point us in a direction or answer some questions I may have. We currently use SCO Openserver Ver. 5.0.7. We also use SCO Openserver Enterprise Edition Ver. 5.0.7. We actually load up a computer with the SCO platform, then we load our Application Software (HVAC) to run on top of it. Since Unix and Linux are a form of each other, we believe the migration is very possible and not extremely intensive. I have contacted Red Hat and they said that the migration can be done.
