Hey, Jon has to bug out early tonight. My plan is to bring a pizza for John and his buddy as well as bring along some snacks for us and we'll go out afterwards. If the crowd is large enough we might have to change venues, but I figure we'll roll with it. Jon "maddog" Hall is the Chairman of the Board of the Linux Professional Institute, and the President of Linux International. Since 1969, Mr. Hall has been a programmer, systems designer, systems administrator, product manager, technical marketing manager, author and educator. He currently works as an independent consultant, and is involved with bringing environmentally friendly computing to emerging marketplaces as well as working on performance and educational issues with Free and Open Source Software via the Linaro Association. He is also closely aligned with LeMaker, a design center located in Shengen, China. While not a founding member of LPI, maddog helped formulate some of the concepts and donated personal money to allow the first 200 tests be tested for psychometrics. Mr. Hall has worked for such companies as Western Electric Corporation, Aetna Life and Casualty, Bell Laboratories, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), VA Linux Systems, SGI, Futura Networks (Campus Party) and Linaro. Mr Hall has worked on many different operating systems (MFT, MVT, VS1, VS2, MVS, CP-67, VM/CMS, RSTS/E, RSX-11M, CP/M) but concentrated on Unix systems since 1980 and Linux systems since 1994, when he first met Linus Torvalds and correctly recognized the commercial importance of Linux and Free and Open Source Software. Mr. Hall obtained a DEC "Alpha" system for Linus Torvalds and organized and engineering team which helped the Linux community to port Linux to the world's fastest 64-bit microcomputer. Since 2006 Mr. Hall has been working on Project Cauā, which will large numbers of high-tech jobs allowing students who could not afford to attend university to both attend university and get real-life job experience. Mr. Hall is the author of numerous magazine and newspaper articles, many presentations and one book, "Linux for Dummies". He currently writes a blog for Linux Pro Magazine. Mr. Hall has consulted with the governments of China, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Brasil as well as the United Nations and many local and state governments on the use of Free and Open Source Software. Mr. Hall serves on the boards of several companies, and several non-profit organizations. It would have to be BYOB. I have already been thrown out of one bar by letting someone have "a wee taste" of good scotch from a pocket flask I was carrying. The owner had no sense of humor. I've got some technical concerns about the demo. Just want to make sure we have all the right stuff on hand. No VGA port on the laptop, just HDMI. The one time I tested that (yesterday) there was no audio through the HDMI. The laptop speakers are loud enough if you hold your ear close. Can we patch into the sound system with a mini-jack? Windows NT/XP/7/8 had the POSIX subsystem and then the Interix subsystem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interix But they deprecated it in Windows 8 and don't support it at all on Windows 10. As one of my co-workers pointed out... the MS file model is fundamentally incompatible with the linux model. Try renaming a file in windows that someone else has open... try deleting a file someone has open. There are lots and lots of linux programs that do that last trick... create a temp file, open it and then delete it... use it for scratch space and then when they close it... *poof* it's gone. Interesting but I don't see much point. Yes it may be technically interesting but from an end user perspective why use this over cygwin. I imagine any graphical application won't work. If they did make it support SDL, gtk, etc., I'd be interested. Granted on a new machine I might install it instead of cygwin if it was easier to install. Well, this will make backing up my wife's machine a bit easier now that it'll be running sshd. Yeah, I should know better. I was beat up and frustrated at the time. Sorry. The root of my problem was that I couldn't find any options in the BIOS to manipulate the Secure Boot/UEFI/Legacy stuff. There's pretty much no such thing as a "dumb" TV in today's consumer market. If you find one, it'll be an off brand. I bought the Vizio M55 last month and like it. It's GUI is simpler and thus less cumbersome than the Samsung TV we have. It's also 4K if that matters to you. My recommendation would be Sony as far as image quality and reliability go. Their newest series of smart TVs integrate Android TV, which is actually good, so that's another plus. Hey Gang, After 17 years, my venerable 27" Panasonic tube TV finally died. Now... what to replace it with? So far I'm looking at the Visio TVs, but I'd peoples like/hates with their current TV's etc. I like won't be using it as a monitor and will only be watching streaming stuff. I figure this is midly linux related because most modern TV's are running linux! Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Recently a drunk person stumbled in and gave the sales associate a bit of a scare, fortunately nothing happened. A company quoted $4k, which i thought was unnecessary, so linux powered i will go. I recall hearing on the list about a linux security camera potential a year ago with a PI, and a search through old list messages confirms that. The market for these PI-like devices seems to be fast moving. The PI 3 was announced recently, and the wifi option is attractive b/c less wiring is desirable. I know of other similar devices such as, beagle bones, other PIs, and ODROID (mentioned on the list). These devices are out of my domain of expertise and there are many of them. I thought the PI 3 would make for a good choice, but i thought i’d ask the list if there is anything else to consider. Price is not really an option since all these devices are so dang cheap. If you're doing multiple cameras, or having multiple pictures coming into the server per second, post-processing of the images on the server end, you will end up with a CPU bottleneck. I'm glad this topic came up because I've also been asked to setup four wireless security cameras. My thought would be to use a raspberry pi 2 (or 3!) and have it connected via USB to a external 250GB SSD then to use zone minder to capture the video. The questions I have are: 1. Knowing the USB's all share a single interrupt... will the pi have enough throughput to capture and storage the video? 2. How many cameras can a pi reasonably support? 3. I hope to attend this meeting, but inform you I am not a person of technical expertise in this matter. May main aim with WLUG is to acquaint myself with other Linux users in the area and learn about what they are doing. I'm having trouble with unresolved dependencies when trying to get updates with Apper in OpenSUSE: nothing provides libvpx.so.3()(64bit) needed by libavcodec56-2.8.6-55.1.x86_64 nothing provides libgnutls.so.30()(64bit) needed by libavformat56-2.8.6-55.1.x86_64 nothing provides liblzma.so.5(XZ_5.0)(64bit) needed by gstreamer-plugins-libav-1.6.1-2.1.x86_64 Is it just a matter of finding the right repositories? Talking to people last night it sounds like there's some serious interest in collecting / searching / displaying / dashboards. Since I've been working with this stuff, if people are interested I wouldn't mind giving a talk / demo, showing off elasticsearch, logstash, kalbana, graphite, grafana, etc. Are people interested? I personally use Mediatemple, where I manage ~8 domains. They've got great customer support, and a really slick control panel. They're primarily a hosting site, but they're really good either way. Hey Everybody, We won't be having a WLUG meeting tomorrow. We're going to be having it on the 3rd Thursday of the month (10/15). We'll be having the meeting in the mid century room (rm 331) @ 7pm. I've been exploring HTML5 3D scene rendering. It appears to make good use of gpgpu acceleration. Hey Gang! I know kids are going back to school, etc and the summer is winding down... but WLUG isn't! So in that vein, I know many of us have STEAM/STEM oriented kids.
