pinning Icons in Gnome

I am using Ubuntu 24.0.X, which uses Gnome by default. Whenever I pin a .desktop icon to the dashboard, it is no longer visible when I browse through the apps. Is there a way to have an icon "pinned" to the dashboard and be visible in "show apps"? (the bottom left icon with three dots and three arcs in a circle that shows the available apps) My workaround for this is to copy the .desktop file to the desktop folder for items that I want conveniently available. Obviously, this is not the ideal.

SanDisk Clip Sport Question

Would anyone be knowledgeable? I have an old 8 GB SanDisk Clip Sport that I am trying to resurrect if it can be done easily. Yesterday I left it connected to my Linux Computer USB for two hours. The screen read "Low Battery" This morning, I plugged it into a house charger and left it charging for nearly three hours. The same "Low Battery' Screen appeared. If I hit the power button the MUSIC screen appears. I had music on there from tinkering years back. The unit seems to operate fine (I plugging in earplugs and listened to music) while charging, but as soon as I disconnect the charge wire no matter what the screen view, it all goes dark. On line searches have not been helpful. Any thoughts? ...fyi leaving it even longer on the charger just in case Ron

In addition to that I've been experimenting with restic. Restic is a backup system that can make use of S3/MinIO storage to create efficient backups. Remember, there are two types of people in the world.. Those who have backups and those who *wish they had!* To dovetail with this is another topic that people might find interesting, that is TrueNAS Scale. I've been using it in production and for personal fun as well. Its App stack is pretty slick for people who want to start self hosting. So apparently, for some unknown and completely unforeseeable reason, a few notable websites have gone dark, like reproductiverights.org, lots of DEI related content, and <checks notes...> the official page on the US constitution. For now much of this content can still be found at the Wayback Machine, but it's not hard to foresee the same forces that took down the original content going after them as well. As an alternative, is anyone familiar with completely self-hosted systems with equivalent functionality to the Wayback Machine? -- - Frank

Let's be frank, the digital landscape is looking a bit bleak right now. More and more, I'm finding myself not that interested in posting anything about myself or my family because I don't need some AI algorithmically categorizing me. Even this email I'm sure is being analyzed by google.. gmail is free for a reason.. I had an idea and that was this. Would people be interested in a mastodon server running inside a tailscale mesh? Or some other service, like IRC or https://revolt.chat/ or I'm sure other people have other great ideas. My plan is to show off a pi running mastodon and/or revolt with tailscale. I'd love to hear people's thoughts about this. If people even think the tailscale stuff is needed. So that's my thought for what we might talk about. Does Poxmox Virtualize H.264 encoding

I occasionally use OBS studio as a screen recorder in my main OS and my CPU is a little light for CPU encoding of video. I have been considering using Proxmox as my hypervisor in place of Virtualbox on my single desktop. Does anyone have any idea if proxmox provides virtual H.264 hardware encoder support like there is a virtual device for keyboard and mouse? From what I have been able to determine, I can not use a pass-through unless I get a second video card, and I suspect there will be other limitations. Right now, I can not get another video card due to a shortage of PCIe slots, $$ and power supply capacity .

Software to write books

Probably a couple years back, I think Tim might have mentioned a software program that was used by many people to write and edit books with. I think the perk was that it was easier to work with the font types than it was in Microsoft Word or Libre Office. Would anyone recall what software that was? Ron
