Hi Folks, I have tried to get an answer to this question thru Stackexachange, but they give me bureaucratic reasons why this question does not qualify for an answer. Maybe one of you can give me some guidance. Here is the question: I am running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I use this command line to record from either Line In or microphone: sox -t alsa default \Desktop/FTC/RecdMsg$(date +"%Yx%mx%dx%Ix%Mx%Sx%p")x1.mp3 A cable is always plugged into Line In. If I plug a microphone into the Front Microphone connector, this command line records from the mic. If I physically unplug the mic, I can record from Line In. I hope someone can help me: a. Create a similar command that always records from Line In b. Create a similar command that always records from Front Microphone c. Create a command that asks me which input I want to use Thank you. Long time WLUG member John Stoffel has graciously agreed to show off his new, small, but mighty desktop. We'll put it through its paces with a couple quick demos and tests. Along with his mini pc, he's also got QLC+ lighting control software and an LED instrument with RGBW Leds in it to demo and show off it being controlled by a linux system. QLC+ has slowed down in development lately, but it's an interesting alternative to QLAB when you don't have a Mac, and Qlab only runs on Macs. John texted me this morning that there's a nor'easter on the way. The weather people, who are using Linux to run the large models are predicting heavy rain and winds, localized flooding, etc. I care more about the members of this group than keeping to a schedule. Next Month on the 2nd and 3rd Thursdays I have conflicts. So.. the next possible Thursday would be the 22nd.. Another option is that we shift the meeting to Wednesday for this month on the 14th? I know that isn't an "Free Hack" day at Technocopia, but I think we can work something out. What would people like to do? IPv6, are you using it, should we be using it?

I’ve been adding more and more matter/thread devices to my home and since I’ve seen more local ipv6 addresses I’ve tried enabling Ipv6 fully. BUT, Ive had struggles adding matter devices. Is this just older hardware choices like we have to create a 2.4 GHz only network? Is the world of devices not yet ready for IPv6? What are your thoughts on it? Steve Thibault

Reboot required questions

I usually run any updates on my Linux machine after I'm done using the machine for the day. Sometimes the update the system says "reboot required" At that point I close the active window. Hit restart, let the machine start up, reboot, and then I sign in again before shutting down for the night. My question is: can I instead just shut down and wait until the next day to start up the computer? (I've read on line that I need a "proper" shut down. With all the text flashing at hyper speed I wonder if I do shut down or even start up properly) Ron

This might be old news, but Ubunt 24.0.X can still run X11 https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/how-to-switch-from-x11-to-wayland-on-live-ub… CodeLight is no longer seems to lock up and a Steam/wine game I play seems to start without errors. I have not spent much time testing this.

pinning Icons in Gnome

I am using Ubuntu 24.0.X, which uses Gnome by default. Whenever I pin a .desktop icon to the dashboard, it is no longer visible when I browse through the apps. Is there a way to have an icon "pinned" to the dashboard and be visible in "show apps"? (the bottom left icon with three dots and three arcs in a circle that shows the available apps) My workaround for this is to copy the .desktop file to the desktop folder for items that I want conveniently available. Obviously, this is not the ideal.

SanDisk Clip Sport Question

Would anyone be knowledgeable? I have an old 8 GB SanDisk Clip Sport that I am trying to resurrect if it can be done easily. Yesterday I left it connected to my Linux Computer USB for two hours. The screen read "Low Battery" This morning, I plugged it into a house charger and left it charging for nearly three hours. The same "Low Battery' Screen appeared. If I hit the power button the MUSIC screen appears. I had music on there from tinkering years back. The unit seems to operate fine (I plugging in earplugs and listened to music) while charging, but as soon as I disconnect the charge wire no matter what the screen view, it all goes dark. On line searches have not been helpful. Any thoughts? ...fyi leaving it even longer on the charger just in case Ron

In addition to that I've been experimenting with restic. Restic is a backup system that can make use of S3/MinIO storage to create efficient backups. Remember, there are two types of people in the world.. Those who have backups and those who *wish they had!* To dovetail with this is another topic that people might find interesting, that is TrueNAS Scale. I've been using it in production and for personal fun as well. Its App stack is pretty slick for people who want to start self hosting. Self hosted equivalent to wayback machine

So apparently, for some unknown and completely unforeseeable reason, a few notable websites have gone dark, like reproductiverights.org, lots of DEI related content, and <checks notes...> the official page on the US constitution. For now much of this content can still be found at the Wayback Machine, but it's not hard to foresee the same forces that took down the original content going after them as well. As an alternative, is anyone familiar with completely self-hosted systems with equivalent functionality to the Wayback Machine? -- - Frank
