help with CentOS webserver

last-minute BBQ status

ZFS Fun!

During my talk, I spoke briefly about upgrading one of my machines from 3TB disks to 4TB disks. Here's a "zfs status" output (obviously with some critical details scrubbed) This is a raid 60 (4, 8 disk raid 6's). I'm replacing 4 disks, one from each of the strip sets. What I captured this output I'd just put in the fourth disk. So that 252h is now down to 15h, and likely soon it'll be even lower. Obviously, I/O load on the subsystem will cause this to stretch out. Flat screen monitor 19" needs fixit; free to good home

The power went out here twice today. After the second event, monitor seems to have died. This is an Acer monitor, several years old. Black(ish) bezel; not glossy. Flat screen, I think 19" diagonal. Has been a very nice reliable monitor during its working life. Has choice of DVI input or the older kind of data connection, whatever that used to be. This specific batch of Acer monitors had used a type of capacitor which is known to have a higher-than-usual failure rate, and this is PROBABLY what it needs. Had a twin of this that fryolated same way 2 years ago, and a WLUG member came by & reported shortly after that he got it up & running with just the replacement of bad caps. This monitor has been very steady and reliable until this afternoon, with nice display and no dead pixels, ever. So if you are handy with electronics fixits, capacitors are cheap and you could probably get this working again with only a screwdriver, a soldering iron and a little bit of fiddling. Might be nice for the kid's playroom or the back office, or something. I don't know how nice games look on this monitor, since I don't do gaming. Videos always looked perfectly fine with good color. PM me if you think you want this, since I have to get down under the work table to unplug the power cord & I'm not as spry as I used to be, but can do as long as my knees aren't required to do anything radical before Noon. Pickup after Noon any day, & evenings even sort-of late-ish are okay. I can meet you at the door with this. I'm in Worcester near Elm Park. Rather give this away here than trash it, or Freecycle... first dibs to WLUG. Best wishes, Liz J

Announcing (with Tim's blessing/OK) our next meeting is the WLUG summer BBQ at my house ; 540 linden st, boylston ma. <= 20min from worc via 290, .....so many other ways to get here from north/190 ; east/495, etc. Thurs July 9 at or before 7pm. Food details later. BBQ's don't need a topic, but I would love to keep doing+learning a LITTLE with -- freeNAS : my own home server works enough to NOT wanna break it, but smbd isnt working yet ( want to share with win doze) -- other ZFS-able boxes (e.g. my junker/re-loadable PC has pc-bsd with issues, want it to catch ZFS snapshots over ssh for backups ..how hard could that be?) -- chainsaws, musical instruments, tricks+treats for golden retrievers and a cat (just kidding for the meeting, but now you know way too much about me) Maybe someone else wants to bring a tower/PC for abuse or argument e.g. loading something like the above top 2, then studying the result. Or not? What did I forget besides food? -doug also with wife's blessing, if I do all the work.

Folks, My grandson wants to host a minecraft server party for his boy scout troop and my daughter and I are wondering how to ensure that the existing machines on her home network are not compromised given that the members of the troop will be bringing their own machinesand ethernet switchesalthough some may be running wireless. I was wondering if you could give us some thoughts on how to set up the network. It is my understanding that the minecraft clients do need to get out to the internet to obtain a valid player name. I had thought ofsetting up a seperate Router/Lan for the party, disconnecting the existing router/lan from the wan and connecting the minecraft router/lan to the wan for the duration of the party. Any thoughts out there? -David

Can someone explain this to my evidently inadequately caffeinated brain? I was trying to use a lower case character range wildcard to list all files not starting with an uppercase letter and I noticed it wasn't working as I'd expect. So I created this simple example and still don't understand what's happening. Beaglebone Black

Hi Everybody, I would like to know if any proprietary binary blobs are required to use a Beaglebone Black. According to my findings, the Raspberry Pi has a proprietary binary blob involved with booting the machine, and also controlling the video. It wasn't so easy to find this information. I would prefer to use such a board with no proprietary software. That's why I'm considering the Beaglebone Black. Does anybody know the definitive answer? I've searched a lot of websites to no avail. What a great meeting last night! Chuck did a great presentation showing off several different model Pi's plus demoing their use as squeeze box remote media players. He also started to show off the MAME and DVR/MythTV stuff but we all got distracted. I think that could merit a meeting topic all by itself! We had a great show and tell of pi devices. The coolest being the homemade pi based wifi enabled security camera (with infrared LEDs!) To cap the night we ended doing a mini install fest on a "classic" Sony Vaio! Thanks everybody! (6) Precision 690 workstations, some missing memory and/or drives, all functional. multi-RAID, multi-monitor. Giant 90lb. boxes, all metal. (4) PowerEdge R300 1U rackmount servers, some missing memory and/or (SAS) drives, all functional. (3) PowerEdge SC1420 tower servers, one has a RAID5 SCSI array, all functional. (2) XPS GEN 4/5 workstations (gaming boxes from early '00s), w/ RAID1. Working. A few Optiplex 740s, some working, some not. 2.9Ghz Athlon II 64 CPUs. Most need memory. PowerEdge SC600, needs new fan and PS. Pentiam 2.4Ghz. PowerEdge 2400, monster of a case, 8? SCSI drives in 2 arrays, dual PIII CPUs, makes an excellent bench+space heater. Wireless mesh network question

HI guys, I am planning to setup a wireless mesh network at a ham radio event in June. Each mesh node will consist of two Linksys WRT54GLs, much like the demo I showed at a recent WLUG meeting. One of the WRT54GLs will be on channel 6 and carry mesh network traffic. The other one will be on channel 1 and allow generic wifi devices access to the mesh network. It seems like there would be an interference problem if every node allowed wifi access on channel 1. Should this be 4 different wifi channels? It is possible for a user to be within radio range of multiple of them simultaneously. Thoughts? I've never setup a wireless network before and could use your advice. These mesh nodes will be placed outside in weatherproof enclosures with battery power. Thanks! Hi Group! I'm seeking opinions about an sshd feature. I was doing some work on a remote system (I did not set it up) that seemed to be refusing ssh and scp connections randomly. I looked into it, and finally stumbled across this from sshd_config(5), MaxStartups Specifies the maximum number of concurrent unauthenticated connections to the SSH daemon. Additional connections will be dropped until authentication succeeds or the LoginGraceTime expires for a connection. The default is 10. Alternatively, random early drop can be enabled by specifying the three colon separated val‐ ues “start:rate:full” (e.g. "10:30:60"). sshd(8) will refuse connection attempts with a probability of “rate/100” (30%) if there are currently “start” (10) unauthenticated connec‐ tions. The probability increases linearly and all connection attempts are refused if the number of unauthenticated connections reaches “full” (60). Indeed, the server had this setting, MaxStartups 10:50:20 This just seems like a terrible option. You can DOS their server just by making 20 connections and leaving them hanging. And it breaks any automated scripts relying on ssh or scp (unless you wrap them in a loop until they succeed, ugh). My guess is that the reasoning behind this feature that it will filter out a number of automated attacks. That seems no better than security-by-obscurity, and I know how some of you feel about that. :) Can you think of any sane reason to enable this feature, or for it to even exist at all? (i appologize for the previous message that i completely unreadable.) Dear W-LUGgers, I had some strange network related behavior that left me baffled and i wanted to hear some theories from more experienced network admins. The network layout is the following. The network is pretty simple, external traffic passes through a bridged-firewall (OpenBSD, my choice) into an OS X server (not my choice) which handles NAT/DHCP/DNS et al., and all the office computers are dhcp clients to the OS X server. The trouble machines are linux (ubuntu) desktop clients. The scenario is the following. I was doing work on the bridged firewall (OpenBSD) and somehow caused it to kernel panic, oopsie! So the bridged-firewall went down thus no-one had internet access, Dou! i quickly bounced the machine. It came back on-line and clients were able to access the internet, huzzah! But, the strange behavior was in two linux machines within the network that were not able to access some external IPs. My linux desktop could not access 8.8.8.8, when pinging, i could see an arp who-has request originating from my machine, i could see the packet come into the OS X server. But the request always went unanswered. The same behavior happened to another linux desktop but with 192.48.178.134 (sgi.com) My desktop could ping sgi.com. So each linux desktop had *different* unreachable IPs. The rest of the internet was reachable. I tried clearing the arp-cache on the OS X server, then clearing the NAT state tables, then I rebooted the OS X server, none solved the problem. I finally renewed the dhcp lease on my linux desktop machine and that allowed the ping to complete. What would case this behavior? Could it be stale arp-cache on the linux machine? ( I *should* have tried to clear the arp-cache on the linux machine before i renewed the dhcp lease, but i didn’t think of that until after the fact.) The linux machine was sending out arp who-has requests so would a stale cache even matter? Why would no one answer the arp requests? I am not an expert network admin (its just a side job since the company is only 15 people). I don’t expect to get a resolution but i’m interested to hear any theories. Thanks and cheers, — brad PS. Anyone here ever use JGAAP, the authorship Java JAR program? http://evllabs.com/jgaap/w/index.php/Main_Page It is returning errors, and sadly, I do not know enough to interpret the terminal lines to figure out why it keeps returning errors when you run the analysis, even if you try it in various ways. The program is clearly running but there is a catch. Anyone out there familiar with this? Thanks guys! Colin

Security questions aside, for synchronization of Android files to Google Drive I like "Autsync for Google Drive" from metactrl. Was $3 to buy & install. Set & forget delta sync of pictures, pdf files, etc. I tell it to only sync every 4 hours via WIFI. Taking a picture toggles a sync now. I use password store (http://www.passwordstore.org/) It's the only true Unix solution. It's written in bash, stores passwords in a gpg encrypted text file, and sync is done with git. It's in most repos and homebrew. It includes niceties such as password generation and versioning is nice too (I used my old password for Facebook on Reddit, but forgot to write it down, but now I've changed my Facebook password becomes a simple git log/checkout). If anything ever happens, everything is stored in a format you can easily grok. I have a private repo on my home NAS that I can get to from anywhere. I have a chroot on android; all of those utilities exist natively on Win/Mac/Linux. Because I trust gpg enough, I could even use a free private repo on bitbucket. Just transfer your password encryption subkey around safely. There are various clients/guis out there including supposedly iOS and Firefox. Frank, You just save your .kdb (or is it .kdbx?) file on Google Drive. It's just a file that you open and save from KeePass, so KeePass doesn't have to support Google Drive per se. I used KeePass for a while, but I prefer LastPass. You said you didn't want an app-specific cloud solution, so I guess that rules out LastPass, but it's what I like. I also pay something like $12/year to LastPass, but it's worth it. I like keepassx because there is a CLI "shell" client I'm using called kpcli. I use both the GUI and CLI in different scenarios. I have the Android client as well, but don't really use it. Instead I SSH in and use kpcli. I prefer to keep my data local (not in the cloud), especially sensitive data like password databases. Great meeting last night!

Hey Everybody! Last night we had a great meeting. Logan did a kick ass job on the Asterisks talk! Asterisks is cool than I thought and we all learned quite a bit. For those who were unable to attend, we had a surprise guest! Maddog showed up and brought along a "Banana Pi" and a "Adapteva Parallela". He also offered in the future to speak about the projects that he's currently working on. I was going to speak next month on STEM/Linux software/toys but I'm going to instead step aside for Maddog if it all works out. Also, we're going to work on getting the guy who runs Adapteva to come do a talk about the Parallela platform and his manycore architecture, etc. Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Okay Gang, In the 10+ years that this group has been in existence many of us have gotten married, had a couple of kids, etc. This means that planning for a WLUG meeting needs to happen in a much more scheduled manner. Sending out a meeting reminder the day before a meeting just doesn't cut it anymore. I've spoken with Chuck and things are going to be changing. However, before we do anything, I think it makes sense to ask some questions. Does the first Wednesday of every month work for everybody? Would going back to the Wed/Thurs alternating schedule work better for people? What I'd like to implement is an automated meeting system that'll automatically send a reminder at the beginning of the month and then a subsequent reminder the day or two before. The "broken" text file (was: I guess this is goodbye... )

Thanks, Keith. The program doesn't crash at all, and I don't think it is broken. It just can't do certain things that it used to do. This program is called Geneweb, and it's free, GNU, open-source, etc. http://opensource.geneanet.org/projects/geneweb. I am running version 5.01 which is not the latest, but I'm keeping it because in versions starting from 6, they changed something, and a mod that I installed (that I didn't write) that allows a display of three generations before and after the individual won't work any more. The data in the text file (called the base), containing various types of information about the individual, also contains some numbers and so forth, linking that person to his/her parents, children, spouse, etc. The program will access this file display an individual and parents, children, etc, if known in a web page that is nicely formatted; that's fine. What happens since May 2012 is that from the top page there is a choice of displaying all surnames (alphabetical), or a box in which one can input a surname, which then will result in a display of all persons with that name. That won't work now, and neither will the all-surnames display work. One can also choose to display persons sorted on title or estate, which also doesn't work. The problem really is in the text file (the base). I have several different databases here, and the others, one of which contains 50,000 individuals, perform perfectly. But in my big database, it hangs, seeming to get lost, when asked to display surnames or estates. The data in the text file is supposed to look like this, more or less: 0 @I1@ INDI 1 NAME Bob /Cox/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 FEB 2006 0 @I2@ INDI 1 NAME Joann /Para/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 FEB 2006 0 @I3@ INDI 1 NAME Bobby Jo /Cox/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 FEB 2006 0 @F1@ FAM 1 HUSB @I1@ 1 WIFE @I2@ 1 MARR 1 CHIL @I3@ 0 TRLR I also can't create a backup or copy to anywhere, which is crucial, and I can't move the base file, either to another location on the hard drive or to another device. I also can't get it to re-sort, which would be nice, because that cleans up "ghosts" or leftover info on individuals that don't "exist" any more because they have been merged with another one who turned out to be the same person. This problem first cropped up when I had either 86,000 individuals or 82,000 individuals, 2 1/2 years ago. If I ever use the wrong terminology, I aploogize, but I'm not an IT specialist. I am a Linux User located in Worcester. Last time I wrote a program, it was in Basic. I should have said, I guess, is that there must be some bad characters in this text file "base", which makes it impossible for the program that uses it to perform certain functions, such as Sort, or to display certain data, such as all persons of the surname {Whatever}. Liz I didn't know what could be meant by "broken text file", now I see that you mean "broken file processing program". Do you have the source for the geneology program? If not, insert rant here. Does the program crash as soon as you import the file, or only when you do something particular? My first impulse would be to put printf commands into the input procedure. Do you have a spec for what the data is supposed to look like, or is this one of those take-the-money-and-(run|hide| sell updates) programs, whose authors think that's super double secret eye pee? > The text file has been broken since May 2012. Mencoder Too Many Audio Packets

I've been encoding some dvds for a while. I purchased The Incredible Hulk: The Complete Animated Collection some time ago. It is PAL encoded but the only way to legally purchase the 1982 series. Encoding those worked fine but when I tried encoding the 1966 series I encountered problems with three episodes. Episodes 4, 8, and 13 produced the error: Too many audio packets in the buffer: (4096 in 8257533 bytes). Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed? For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option. I've found various suggestions on fixing it (ac3_fixed instead of ac3, various combinations of -mc and -ofs). Automating RPM building

For my btbuilder project, I have a script to automatically tag a new version, put everything into an tgz, cross-compile to windows, and zip that up. Recently I've been building a .src.rpm for Fedora's copr as well. Actually the rpm is for inclusion in Fedora but I haven't gotten a sponsor yet so publishing to copr is best I can do: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1079064 I'd like to automate the building of this .src.rpm. Currently I copy the tgz to makerpm's rpmbuild/SOURCES and use rpmbuild as user makerpm. I'm trying to find a good way to automate that. Suggestions? I could use ssh with ssh-keygen but I'm wondering if there is a better way.

Paying Job needing Linux expertise

WVAO-LP FM radio station in Athol MA has just received its FCC construction permit. They are now organizing to build a radio station. One task is to design/build the control room. They want to use Linux. They would prefer using SUSE (https://www.suse.com/products/server/ and/or https://www.suse.com/products/desktop/) to ensure support and security for the decades to come. You would work in collaboration with the project manager, Ms Marie MacDonald and her team of volunteers. You would be specifying/building control room computer(s), specifying/installing/configuring management and monitoring software, and setting up a support infrastructure (if something goes wrong at 2 in the morning they need to quickly get back on the air) (if a software update results in a broken dependency, it needs to be fixed). Pay is by the hour and to be negotiated with the project manager. This is a non-profit organization. You will not get rich but you will have solid resume material and will definitely be helping the towns of Athol and Orange get a community radio station on the air. Run Linux on HP Touchpad

HI everybody, Somebody just gave me an HP Touchpad, and I'd like to run Linux on it. It seems that I'm about 3 years too late to this game. I cannot find a set of instructions that work from a Linux computer. Many of the links to software needed to make this work are out of date. I succeeded in getting my Linux system to see the HP Touchpad as a USB device and I copied some files to it. Is there any hope? Hi folks! I will be introducing OpenSCAD, a DSL for CAD modeling. It is a finite, functional scripting language that outputs shapes ready for 3d printing. It has a C like syntax that is parsed into an OpenCSG tree, that is then compiled down to a .stl triangular mesh. It supports all source code version control unlike most 3d design software, and also has a powerful library system for modular designing. OT: Looking for ISP

I'm moving back to Worcester after 5-ish years. I used speakeasy for DSL when I lived near Indian Lake, but they aren't the same company anymore, and the new place is just off Hope Ave, by the cemeteries, Hadwen Park, and the Auburn line. Can anyone recommend a good ISP out that way, or a good website to find an ISP? -- Thanks! Rich

Agreed on Charter being the only choice for Woostuh, where I lived and worked through the glorious 1980s and again briefly 2006-06 and 2010. That wottuh problem under Southbridge Street is due primarily to runoff from the hills above it PLUS the Blackstone River tributary which they built the street and 290 over back when. Recently I decided to try to get my program Bt Builder into Fedora (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1079064) They identified some issues during review which I've fixed. Initially I didn't do the "introdution" email to the devel because I was joining to package my project and eventually maybe some others. I did eventually join the list and send the email. However I've also been reading the Fedora Present and Future articles on the Fedora Magazine site http://fedoramagazine.org/fedora-present-and-future-a-fedora-next-2014-upda… It's left me wondering if I should bother going with sponsorship into Fedora. I can setup a COPR and perhaps move into the distribution via the Playground. Do you Fedora will continue with the current sponsorship model? Will new projects instead come in through the personal repositories of COPR?

I have a weird problem with tripwire on at least two of my servers. What is / isn't missing is the glaring alert that tripwire doesn't match the RPM. Also, the MD5 sum in tripwire on one machine doesn't match it on another, and neither do the SHA1 sums as computed from the command line. While I'm pretty good with CentOS, there are a few things that I'm still learning so I'm thinking that I'm missing something here. Can anybody please shed some light on this, especially the differing sha1sums? If these are binaries, shouldn't they have the same sha1um? Also, do I need to blow away this machine and rebuild? This message has two parts. The first is about the basic mail program. The second (which is more important to me) is about how to avoid having to use the mail program. Part I: The Basic mail program (I'm running CentOS.) I asked last night about the basic mail program - specifically about navigating through the headers. Chuck looked up some documentation and said that the "h+" and "h-" commands should do it. And, somebody came up to me with his laptop and showed the "z" command.) Here's what the help file within mail shows about the "z" command: (Yes. -It says nothing about the z command.) Here's what I found with the h+ and h- commands: When I invoke mail, it displays the headers of 38 unread messages (numbers 1 - 38) and a prompt ("&"). (The terminal window is 132 characters wide by 42 lines long.) If I type h+, it displays the same 38 headers again. (h- gets "Referencing before 1") If I type h7865782365, I get "Invalid message number". If I type h 1-a, I get "Non-numeric second argument". If I type h 1-4, I get the first 38 headers. The program seems to be parsing what follows an "h", but royally screws up acting on what it finds. If I type "39", I get message 39. (There doesn't seem to be a "LAST" command to see the last message - and find out its number. So, typing, say, 100, gets an error because there's no such message.) Anyway, after viewing message 39, if I THEN type h, it shows headers for messages 39 - 51. (h+ shows the same headers, 39 - 51.) But, h- now shows the first 38. (That makes sense.) But, after using h- to get back to the 1 - 38 list, h+ shows the first 38 messages again. After displaying the first 38 headers, the "z" command DOES cause the next set of headers to be displayed (39 - 51). I figured that, until I figure out how to set things up to forward the logwatch mail to a gmail account, I could tolerate using a separate, basic mail program to check the logs. But, this is crap. People were asking about the guy who screwed up the OpenSSL heartbeat code. What about the guy who wrote this piece of crap? It's very basic stuff that doesn't work. Not too difficult to test... Part II: Getting EMail Forwarded from the Linux System as a Client I have two interests here. One is just academic. -Understanding how to use the mail program, despite (or because of) its suckiness. The other is so I can see the messages that the log scrapers send via /bin/mail to the root account's email. Ideally, I would set things up to have all of root's email get forwarded to, say, a gmail account. But, my setup seems to place some limits on what I can do. I set up an MTA on my VMS box long ago. I used to be able to send email directly from that system. But, it stopped working at some point, and I found that Verizon reports all of the DHCP addresses that they allocate to residential DSL customers as spam sources, so everything was getting blocked. I have written programs (in PHP) that use a PEAR class/API to send email from the Linux box, via a gmail account, to arbitrary addressees. [It requires such information as host (smtp.gmail.com) port (587), username & password for the gmail account...] So, I'm not sure if an MTA is what I really need. Can at MTA be set up to send email as a client of sorts to a real MTA (e.g., google mail)? Or do I need some other type of utility? Sure, I can write my own, but I would hope that somebody else has already done it. (Well, as long as it's not the person who wrote "mail".)

Simpleton Question

WLUG folk, You guys crunch heavy issues, and I have a cream puff of an issue I just can't crack, and I am not too ashamed to admit it. There is a site with a series of m4v (Quicktime) files I want to be able to at least stream, if not download, but I have two problems. The first is that the site www.worcestercatholictv.com has set the permissions on the files so that they will only play embedded in their webpage, AND they have the files as invisible unless the embedded web page searches for them, and as a result, standalone items like VLC can't touch it, and I can't download it. The second is that the issue seems to be related to my running Ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS, and a buddy is having no issues reportedly in 13.X It makes no difference if it is Chromium of Firefox that tries to playback. Default User Agent Switcher has been installed to see if that was generating a conflict, but that doesn't seem to be it either. Totem 3.0.1 Gecko-mediaplayer 1.0.4 I have searched for similar issues and don't seem to come up with anything. I have scanned help files and that doesn't seem to address this either. At this point, if I had a guess, it is the result of funny permissions on a file that no one is worried about being Linux compatible. Thoughts are most welcome, Colin

HOWTO debug Ubuntu boot hang

HI guys, I've got a version of Ubuntu 13.10 in my Virtualbox OSE virtual computer. It hangs very early in the boot. GRUB runs and the boot starts. In /var/log/boot.log, I see the same messages as I see on the screen. I have to press ESC to see the text while the computer boots. There are perhaps 3 or 4 "Starting <service>....OK" messages, and that is all. I never get a chance to log in. The problem I have is that I don't know in which order the boot scripts are supposed to run. With the "old" initscripts, one would see Snn<script> or Knn<script> and the "nn" would be the number representing the order in which the scripts are "S"tarted or "K"illed. That isn't the case here. I've found the boot scripts in /etc/init/*.conf so I can match boot messages to scripts. However, I'm unable to determine which script got stuck since I don't know the order of execution. My version of 13.10 is customized, not stock, so I can't compare to a known good. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Rancid and Quagga

Hi All, I recently fired up a few FreeBSD routers using Quagga, and today I went to configure RANCID but I'm having some troubles. RANCID is working fine for my Juniper gear, my Cisco gear and even my APC stuff but I can't get it to work for quagga. I run zrancid (for zebra stuff) and it just hangs. When you add -d you can see that it's asking for show version and write term, but it still hangs. When I copy / paste the commands and run them by hand with clogin, I see it login but it just hangs after terminal length 0 When I login via ssh with the same command line that clogin passes, terminal length 0 works fine and so do the rest of the commands. I'm stumped, does anybody have any ideas? This however does work for my CentOS servers running quagga. I'm using Quagga 0.99.22.3, and Rancid 2.3.6, which is the most recent RANCID version on CentOS and the most recent Quagga on FreeBSD. ~rancid/.cloginrc: add method *.example.net ssh add autoenable *.example.net {1} add user *.example.net rancid add password *.example.net {} (I'm using ssh keys and it's called id_rsa so that works fine). router.db: ur01.example.net:zebra:up ns1.example.net:zebra:up Thanks in advance, -- Eric Martin

Video Editing

Anyone do any video editing? I've tried using pitivi to edit videos. It usually crashed. Recently I tried putting a series of images in and creating a video. I successfully created a video once. Now everytime I seem to create a file without any video content. The video isn't going to be long or good. I was showing my son how lego stop animation is done. I only did a 8 images and they aren't perfectly aligned. I used a small tripod but press the picture button must have moved the camera a bit. Probably need to use video and screen capture images so I don't touch the camera. The images also have slightly different light levels. If anyone has suggestions on fixing the images to be consistent let me know.

[Super] 8mm Film to Video

When I looked into this several months ago (because I, too, have a pile of old home movies), I discovered: The frame rates of film and video do not divide evenly. So, to get the video to flow at the same rate as the film, extra copies of frames are inserted here and there - at regular, but odd intervals. [I wonder if, on a computer, you could set the video refresh rate and video frame rate to something that would work for the original film frame rate.] There are some relatively cheap set-ups available to project a film on a small screen and video-record it. I can't imagine that the quality would be better than horrible. With the incompatible frame rates, how bad would the flicker be? I vaguely recall that you have to provide the projector and camera. Those once ubiquitous Kodak Instamatic projectors are famous for having brittle plastic gears. I have two such projectors; both broken. [They worked when stored 30 years ago. When I fired each up, little bits of plastic gear went flying.] There is a company I found on the web that provides instructions and parts to restore these things, but... I would think that trying to run an old film through a projector - with the jerky motion necessary to get each frame stationary in the gate when the shutter opens - risks shredding the film. Non-linear scanning at low speed sounds safer. Googling, I found a web site by some guy who was working on his own transfer mechanism. He was using a scanner with fine-enough resolution that he thought it would be OK for such tiny pictures. And, he rigged up some mechanical device to automatically advance the film some number of frames at a time and scan a group of frames. -And, he was working on some software to separate the frames and adjust them so that they're aligned (based on the sprocket holes) because the mechanism couldn't possibly align the frames on the scanner well enough. I'll see if I can find the site again. I wonder if there's pent-up demand for transfer services because the prices are so high. I had hoped to find a co-op or non-profit. But, commercial transfer equipment is so expensive, even a non-profit would have to charge a lot to break even. -Maybe a charitable organization interested in preserving old film and Americana would do it on the cheap? Or, a small number of people buying a (used) $1000 telecine machine could split the cost and take turns... ...and sell it when done? I would think that it'll be worth looking over the films carefully and deciding which are really worth transferring. [I used a microfiche reader to look at a few of mine. It was extremely awkward.] Some of the the companies in/near Boston allow you to use their equipment for free to view your movies. creating digital files from super 8 films

I have a bunch of old Super 8 movie films from family in years gone by. Can any one recommend an efficient and economical way to convert them to digital files? I see online services available, but they are very costly. Thanks, Ron PS as a last resort I may experiment with using a projector to play the reels and try to record the projected image with a cam corder. My fear is that there will be too much quality loss this way.

Free Non-working Older Dell Server - For parts

Upgrade

My main PC is long overdue for an update. I dual boot Win7 and Linux Mint. Light use, no gaming or heavy graphics. A few questions: Are there any gotchas using a CPU with integrated GPU? Not talking about mobo chipset graphic, but something like an AMD CPU with embedded ATI graphic. I haven't yet dealt with any motherboard with UEFI bios. I know there was a big uproar over Secure Boot. Is this going to give me any headache installing Linux? Is there any specific manufacturer that implements it more properly than others? Asus has been my goto brand. I'll retain my current HDDs for storage but would like to use an SSD for the OSes. I'd assume that's pretty transparent as far as installing Linux goes? Anything I need to worry about here? Any specific advice or recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks. Clint

When I got three new machines over this past year, they all came with Windows 8 (HP Pavilions) and Atheros ethernet controllers. I had to disable Secure Boot on the machines where I installed Linux and it was also a royal PITA dealing with the Atheros drivers. Ubuntu and Mint did not want to work with Atheros, and the one machine I finally put Linux on ended up working nicely with Fedora 19. One machine remains Windows 8 (and I had gotten stung pretty badly doing the Beta 8.1 "upgrade" so am keeping it at the 8 level.) Because of pending job stuff I have to, for now, keep a second machine running Windows Server 2012R2, which works fine with the Atheros (Windows 2008R2 did not). And my remaining machine runs Fedora 19 with a hardened Virtual Box running a Whonix vm running Tor and an offshore mail client. Good luck; YMMV, obviously, but I think the disabling of Secure Boot may be your first order of business. OpenWRT on WNDR3800 home router - my install thoughts

Decided to try OpenWRT after Jim Getty's talk and strong recommendation last month for improved security and reduced local buffer bloat. What follows is my experience / thoughts from this process. I would happily bring the hardware to demo at a future meeting if there is interest. Likely wouldn't be a full meeting but a 10-15 minute filler. More likely Q&A than anything else. I decided to go with different router/firewall hardware so I bought a Netgear WNDR3800 which Jim mentioned and is also a favorite of the OpenWRT crowd. Mine was used and $50 shipped from e-bay. This model is one model old and no longer available new. FYI: Netgear website lists it as "out of support". My WNDR3800 was used prior, so I needed to do a hard firmware reset on the bottom of router with a paperclip (didn't know the prior IP used or the admin password). Once reset and rebooted, router worked fine and could login to the "default" Netgear firmware and configuration. Default username & password is printed under the router. Downloaded the recommended OpenWRT firmware for this model. Needs to be full "factory" (instead of partial upgrade) and squashfs is recommended. Netgear WNDR3800 Firmware download link gets you OpenWRT version 10.X version which is not latest OpenWRT. Web browser login to Netgear webpage/firmware and followed "upgrade firmware" link while pointing to OpenWRT download file on local disk. The upgrade/re-flash took around 4 minutes and after a reboot worked fine. Set password and reconfigured router and WIFI with my specifics. Was up and working on OpenWRT v 10.x. Next day realized I had OpenWRT, but not latest stable version. Upgrade firmware link does not go to Internet directly, so first download OpenWRT v 12.4 with "upgrade" and "squashfs" and save to local disk. Second apply this via upgrade button in OpenWRT web link. I could likely have saved a step by grabbing the OpenWRT v12.4 for WNDR3800 with factory and squashfs. I bet this would have worked had I tried it (and saved a step). General thoughts after use for a week: OpenWRT does not have an "update direct to mother ship" feature best I can tell that downloads file and updates it from web interface. Not a show stopper for me. Instead need to know your version of OpenWRT and download an "upgrade" file and apply as two steps. This would only matter if router was used/maintained by a non-geek. Prior problem occurred with similar hardware WNDR3700 with latest Netgear firmware (happened with prior Linksys also). A few embedded WIFI devices in home would disconnect and fail randomly and at least weekly. Thus far these device annoyances have not occured since swap to WNDR3800 and OpenWRT. No idea why, but definitely A win! OpenWRT has transmit power level settings for the WIFI radio transmit. Can decide to bump up the WIFI radio settings if user chooses. Even if you melt/destroy them, a cool option if needed & tested. Firmware update for OpenWRT works from a laptop on WIFI, which in my experience Netgear & Linksys and other vendors do not support flash without a cabled ethernet port. So the OpenWRT update scripts the 1) copy file 2) apply file 3) reboot device. My Next Steps: In another week will likely repurpose the WNDR3700 likely as a WIFI gateway for the "cheap WIFI radio" devices, (mainly TV, roku, DVD, etc.). Not yet sure if I will use OpenWRT for this. Look into the option of external antennas for the WNDR3800. I live out in the country and have few neighbors to notice/know/care. If I can get there... improved & reliable WIFI signal at my mailbox would rock.

On recomendation from someone on this list, I signed up for Speakeasy DSL. The helped me set up a primary name server (DNS) and they ran a secondary name server for a few extra dollars per month. This has been working well for about a decade. The system was designed to tolerate failure. _I_ was not designed to tolerate _intentional_ failure, but everything should still work if the secondary name server is broken. Since I have only one IP address on one DSL line, I never really saw the need for a secondary server in the first place. I run a primary server because (A) I like to think of myself as a programmer, and it is self education to figure out how to do it. (B) Sometimes I create subdomains and run test program servers in them. The RFC's require a second name server, and the registrar asks for it, but who's going to care really? If the primary name server goes out, so do all other servers in the domain, since it's all really just one computer. What would you recommend? If anyone else has the same problem, I could be your secondary, and you could be mine. -- Keith

Keysigning Party -- what to do AFTER

So you've attended a keysigning party and diligently checked people's key fingerprints & IDs. Now what should you do? Here is an overview of the process you should follow: 1. Sign: Look at the checklist you made at the Keysigning Party. For each user where you checked off that you verified their key information & ID, you need to import their key, verify the imported key's fingerprint matches the printout/notes that you verified at the party, sign their key(s), and send them back to them, preferrably signed+encrypted to their key. 2. Import: As you receive your signed key(s) from other people, import them to your keyring and then upload them to a keyserver. 3. Refresh: Periodically refresh your keyring from a keyserver so you get local copies of other people's keys with any additional signatures that were added since you last refreshed. Detailed instructions for each step: 1. Sign: Configure GPG to always ask for the certification level. Before signing keys, it is a good idea to set your GnuPG configuration to always ask you what certification level to assign to each key you sign. This indicates to others how carefully you verified the person's identity before you signed their key. If you don't do this, GnuPG will default to 0 which means you make no particular claim as to how careful you were. Edit $HOME/.gnupg/gpg.conf and add the following to the end: ask-cert-level You can also optionally change the default (in case you don't want to be asked every time): default-cert-level 2 1a. Sign: The CAFF Method. The easiest way to do this is to use CAFF (CA Fire & Forget) from the pgp-tools package on Fedora, or the signing-party package on Debian/Ubuntu. After installing the pgp-tools or signing-party package, you need to configure CAFF. In order to create your initial .caffrc, just run "caff" once. caff Then edit the .caffrc file in your home directory. The minimum settings you should set are: $CONFIG{'owner'} = 'YOUR FULL NAME'; $CONFIG{'email'} = 'YOUREMAIL@FOO'; $CONFIG{'bcc'} = 'YOUREMAIL@FOO'; $CONFIG{'keyid'} = [ qw{YOUR-KEY-ID YOUR-OTHER-KEY-ID-IF-YOU-HAVE-ANY} ]; $CONFIG{'local-user'} = [ qw{YOUR-KEY-ID YOUR-OTHER-KEY-ID-IF-YOU-HAVE-ANY} ]; $CONFIG{'also-encrypt-to'} = [ qw{YOUR-KEY-ID YOUR-OTHER-KEY-ID-IF-YOU-HAVE-ANY} ]; $CONFIG{'default-cert-level'} = '2'; # as above, but for CAFF specifically Note that the KEY-IDs CAFF wants are 8-byte ones rather than the usual 4-byte. Just use the last 16 digits of the fingerprint. You can also customize the email message body that CAFF will send out with each signed key. Then you just run CAFF like this: caff 0xKEY-ID1 0xKEY-ID2 0xKEY-ID3 ... ... etc to sign all those KEY-IDs. You can run it once for each person/key, or list every person's KEY-ID on a single run. CAFF will prompt you to sign people's keys one by one (which you should only do after you verify the fingerprint against your paper copy from the Keysigning Party), then it will email the signatures for each uid (email address) separately to that email address, signed+encrypted to that user. That proves that the user who can receive email at that email address, and who can decrypt the message, is the only user who can get the signature for that user/uid/email, and that is the only way they can get the signature for that uid/email (as long as you don't send your signed copy of their key to a keyserver or anywhere else--leave that to the recipient). 1b. Sign: The Manual Method. It is tricky to do the above manually without CAFF, but if you don't want to run CAFF or can't for some reason, you can sign the key and then export the signed key with gpg --export. Ideally, you should then encrypt that and send it to at least one of the email addresses listed in the uid(s) if not all of them. This is not as good as the CAFF method, because it only proves that at least ONE of the uids/email addresses is controlled by the user who has that key, and the person who controls that ONE email address can get your signature on ALL of the uids/email addresses. These commands should work for the manual method. First verify that the fingerprint matches your printout or notes from the Keysigning Party: gpg --fingerprint 0xRECIPIENT-KEY-ID Now sign the key: gpg --sign-key 0xRECIPIENT-KEY-ID Now export their key, signed+encrypted to both them and you. Store the result, ascii armoured, into a file: gpg --export 0xRECIPIENT-KEY-ID | gpg --encrypt --sign --armour --recipient 0xRECIPIENT-KEY-ID --recipient 0xYOUR-KEY-ID - > 0xRECIPIENT-KEY-ID-signed-key.asc You can verify that this came out right before emailing (since you signed/encrypted it ALSO to your own KEY-ID above) with the following: cat 0xRECIPIENT-KEY-ID-signed-key.asc | gpg -d | gpg --list-packets And you can import it to a test keyring to see the signatures like this: cat 0xRECIPIENT-KEY-ID-signed-key.asc | gpg --decrypt | gpg --import --keyring=testring.gpg --no-default-keyring gpg --list-sigs --fingerprint --keyring=testring.gpg --no-default-keyring Now that you've verified it is all correct, just attach the .asc file to an email and send it to the user's email address(es). 2. Import signed keys other people send you and then upload them. When you receive emails from other people with your signed key(s) (hopefully signed+encrypted in the email) you should import them as follows. If the sender used the CAFF Method, the entire email will be signed+encrypted and you can import the key like this: cat encrypted-email.asc | gpg --decrypt | gpg --import If the sender used the Manual Method, you will have a signed+encrypted attachment that you can import like so: cat 0xYOUR-KEY-ID-signed-key.asc | gpg --decrypt | gpg --import Now you should send your key back to a keyserver with the new signature(s) you just added: gpg --keyserver=subkeys.pgp.net --send-key 0xYOUR-KEY-ID 3. Refresh: Periodically refresh your keyring from a keyserver. In order to reap the benefits of the Web of Trust, you need to download other people's public keys so you can take advantage of the signatures on those keys to verify other people further out in the Web. As people upload their keys with additional signatures on them, your local copies become out of date so you need to refresh them to gain the additional signatures, any revocations, etc. To refresh a single key, just download that key from a keyserver: gpg --keyserver=subkeys.pgp.net --recv-key 0xKEY-ID To refresh your entire keyring (do this sparingly as it does place quite a load on the keyserver): gpg --keyserver=subkeys.pgp.net --refresh-keys That's it!

Follow up from key signing

Hi WLUG and BLU, I have signed all of the keys I have access to. If you haven't received an email from me, it's because either a) I can't get your key, or b) the email with your signed key was lost. Please email me directly if you're expecting a signed key from me. A few people expressed interest in the suite of tools I'm using to make signing easier, and also some visualization tools I'm playing with. They're all based on Debian's pgp-tools which can be called keysigning-party on your distribution. Hands down, the most useful tool is CA Fire and Forget or caff. It's in most distributions, and if it's not in your distro (or you're on a Mac) it's pretty easy to build. Just checkout it out from svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pgp-tools/trunk, and do a make all && make install clean Now that you have caff installed on your machine, it's time for some tweaks. Go ahead and run caff by typing caff at the command prompt. This will setup the folders and files you need that we'll be tweaking. 1) I *highly* suggest making a symlink from ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf -> ~/.caff/gnupghome/ via ln -s ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf ~/.caff/gnupghome This will have caff use your preferences in gpg.conf and it makes it easier to configure / use the way you want to. 2) edit ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf and set your default key, default keyserver (most of them sync with each other so it's not a big deal, but I prefer pool.sks-keyservers.net since it handles subkeys very well.) Also to note, keys can prefer certain servers so don't worry if gpg is asking a few different servers where things are. Also, if you haven't already, set your preferences for algorithms, hashes, and compression. *NOTE* this only applies to making new keys. You should still set the proper preferences on your key via gpg --edit-key <KEYID>. Lastly, I like to add ask-cert-level so gpg (and therefore caff) ask me what certification level to give to each signature 3) edit your ~/.caffrc file to customize your name, email address, and email template / procedure for signing keys. Caff looks for 16 digit keyids, not 8 so punch in the last 16 of your fingerprint for you key. Also, I like to bcc myself on the emails in case a message gets bounced so I can resend it easily via Thunderbird 4) Once those are edited and saved, you're all set! Grab your trusted list, and feed caff one or more keyids to handle via caff <KEYID> <KEYID> <KEYID...> Don't forget to verify the fingerprint caff / gpg show you with your trusted list. I'm attaching my gpg.conf and .caffrc files for those of you who are interested. I should probably put this up as a wiki / blog post at some point in time to I can go back and update / clarify it. Ubuntu usb/bluetooth/android

I've had my shiny new HTC One for a while, and I've found that the USB-connected file mount/transfer/etc speed with my Ubuntu (Precious) is atrocious. I've tried both the nautilus (automount) interface and the mtp-mount: both are bad. I'm wondering whether a usb-bluetooth adapter (my laptop does not have bluetooth) would allow me to mount the smartphone filesystem and get decent performance. TIA, Bill

PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy and was developed by Phil Zimmerman in 1991 for secure communications. Signing keys allows you to say that you trust somebody's key, and extends the Web of Trust which helps everybody. To participate, please bring your public key's fingerprint, and at least (2) forms of ID (Government issued photo ID is the best way to go). If you don't yet have a public key, follow the directions for 'Preparing for the Party' from this [1] Key Signing Party HOWTO. Additionally, please upload your public key to our keyring for this event here [2]. I'll give a brief talk on PGP, and then we'll go through everybody's keys. What not to bring: A computer. Keys are signed at home, we just verify them at the Key Signing. Seeking volunteer to help with local non-profit's website

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester, lvgw.org, is seeking a volunteer for a one-off project to refresh their website. This is not an ongoing commitment. Not sure if the backend tools the use for site management are linux-based, but I suspect they are not. Their goals are: 1. Updating LVGW's website to make it more user friendly, interactive and functional 2. The current website needs some work to make it easier to use and update. This person would also mentor a staff member about these issues Please contact me offline if you are interested. They are also separately looking for a volunteer archivist to create an online database of their historical and research data. Hope you don't think this crosses the line of fair use of this list, but it is for a good cause. Mike

Release cycle for RHEL / CentOS 6

Hi All, The subversion server at my office is on a CentOS 6 server, and a software developer wrote a hook in python for it. The hook requires python 2.7, but CentOS 6 only has 2.6.6 (python-2.6.6-36.el6 to be exact). I grabbed python-2.7.2-5.2.fc16.src.rpm from Fedora 16 and am trying to roll my own via instructions I found on the CentOS wiki. All is good except that it requires db4.8, and that's not out for RHEL6 either. >From where I stand, it looks like my options are: 1) wait this out until either Python or a dependency are pushed up, but when is that? 2) rebuild this package with the deps, but I'm not quite sure how to roll a -devel package 3) roll my own package from scratch 4) install python 2.7 in an alternate location and point to it for this script Since this is a production server, I'd rather no do any hacks on this. Does anybody know how the release schedule works, or have any other advice? Thanks in advance, -- Eric Martin

Hi All, i've been getting more spam over the last couple of days. It appears spamd is not running on my ubuntu 10.04 server; however the headers of the spam messages have X-Spam-* flags. I'm not sure what might be adding the spam headers, perhaps its upstream (or clamav).
