boot images -- safe to delete?

I tried to upgrade to RedHat 7.1 tonight, and I found that I do not have enough disk space on /. So I have 3 options: 1. Fresh install 2. Repartition 3. Clean up As much as I'd like to repartition, I'm not sure enough of myself to plow into that, although I'd like to hear what tricks there might be that would make it easy (easier?) to do. One thing I've noticed is that I seem to have extra kernels around, but I thought I'd see if there is any reason I need to keep them before I whack them. REMINDER: Meeting, Wed. Sept. 12th

HI everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held this Wednesday, Sept. 12th, at 7 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI campus. Directions can be found on the WLUG website. I would like to spend part of the meeting discussing a potential group project. I was contacted by Warren Rasmussen, the Director of the Lancaster (MA) Center for the Aging. He would like to convert several of his office computers from Windoze to Linux, with shared printers, network, shared dialup modem, etc. Warren would also like us to entertain the notion of the creation of a few Linux workstations to be used by senior citizens for e-mail and web surfing, again, using Linux. Some training of the seniors would be required. He'd like to see if we can prove that Linux is easy enough for seniors to use. I have invited Warren to the meeting, so we can get more details from him at that time, and then gauge the interest level of the group in participating in this project. Since the WPI school year has just started, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce any WPI Linux Association officers who might be in attendance. I also plan to open the floor for tech support questions aimed at the group membership. I may still have an item or two that I can bring for a raffle. Afterwards, we'll adjourn to the Boynton Restaurant for some pizza and beer, and all are welcome to attend. RHL 7.1 upgrade: Xterm bizarre, etc

Although *installing* linux from RedHat disks has improved over the years, I still find that upgrading an existing installation can really try your patience. After doing a number of clean installs using the RedHat 7.1 disks, I felt comfortable thinking I could upgrade without much problem. Wrongo. There are a number of things that changed. Some I had know about from the previous clean installs. Others came as a distressing surprize: for instance the sendmail upgrade changes default behavior radically in that it is compiled against the tcpwrappers library, so now you need to consider sendmail entries in your hosts.allow and hosts.deny. Actually, that's a great idea, but I sure wish I knew that before hand (rather than bouncing mail for 2 days until I discovered the problem.) Anyway, I could go on detailing some of these fascinating experiences, but I'll get to the point: my xterm seems to be bizarre when running on the local xserver. I usually don't run xdm (runlevel 5 default in RedHat) but just do a startx. When I do that everything seems pretty OK until I actually try to *do* something. I click on the Netscape icon in the panel on the bottom of the screen. Nothing. I launch an xterm to try to figure out what's happening (or not, in this case) and it just gets worse: the keys don't seem to be matched up to the correct characters. When I press the 'o' key, I get a 'p' on the screen. When I press 'i', I get 'o'. In general it seems like the whole keyboard is just slid over by 1 key -- but I can't seem to find a key that gives me an return or enter. As you can imagine this is annoying. I use Hummingbird Xceed on a windoze machine and the Xterm there running from the linux machine seems to be problem free. (Actually, that's how I usually "use" my linux machine -- I very rarely sit down in front of it.) When I do sit in front of it and use a plain tty, it's fine that way too. Any ideas what's going on here? -Peter Gutowski

Thoughts from wisened pros? Now more than ever I need to migrate to Linux. I am using a dual boot system MS/Linux and I desperately want to cut the cord. Previously the difficulty was an inability to print. Newest guess on that is that there is a possible conflict with lpd and CUPS running at the same time? I have yet to unpack how one goes about fixing that. Most recent challenge was to get a network connection established between two machines on 3Com cards on a 3Com box. Didn't quite get my hands around that, though many different angles were tried. Current thinking on this one is to look around and see if SAMBA might let me configure things. And then I really messed things up. While trying to establish a network I saw this neat option that lets machines share an internet connection, and I pursued it.... After playing around for a while I disabled it and now the Internet connection will not properly execute the ppp. I can manually get all the way through the logon in a Terminal session and when I get to: Entering PPP Session IP address is 216.164.248.83 MTU is 1500 There is nowhere to go from here. Leave it alone and it disconnects. Try to do anything, any key, and gobbledygook shows up killing any prospect of a PPP session completing. Possible that the system "enabling IPv4 packet forwarding" on startup is some leftover from my messing around with sharing an internet connection? No idea on that one. All right. It is necessary to screw around and make mistakes to learn. I am excelling at that, and probably do now know more. The difficulty is that I have never seen this up and working anywhere before, and when trying to solve a problem I am working without an image in my head of what is or isn't supposed to be there. Thought to reload the Mandrake 7.2 system and hope to wipe the settings I created return to where I was originally pursuing different paths. Trick there is that "Reload" keeps all the settings. Shouldah done a reinstall. Learned that too. Any thoughts, or maybe even just a weak hearted consoling word or two. My deepest and sincerest thanks to the learned who had to endure hear a young fool trying to find his feet. Colin

I am not sure what scripts Mandrake put in place to share your network, but if you haven't checked the ipchains/iptables rule sets, do so. It is possible that a rule set could prevent you from logging on via pppd and block ports necessary for communication with the printer. The commands below will clear out the rule sets(enter as root), but will leave you system open. I would not suggest staying online long without a good working rule set. service ipchains stop service iptables stop use the appropriate line (I believe Mandrake 7.2 uses ipchains by default) or try both. -Ben

Andy, The desktop has got 128mb ram (pc100), my laptop has got 196mb. I think that is the problem with the load times when AA is turned on, because it doesn't seem to affect my laptop at all. It's the font problem that irks me. I've figured out that it is tied to AA, with it turned off the fonts don't show up on my desktop either. And my laptop doesn't support AA yet so I'm plum out of luck as they say. Have you heard of any work-arounds to trick kde into thinking I've got AA support? I've had problems printing with cups and libkdeprint. The only hadk I can figure out (until cups supports it) is to use lpd to print anythign with ttf's. Then it works fine, but you lose the advanced features of cups...it's all a balancing act. Mandrake 8.1 is out soon, perhaps they will fix some of these problems. kde22 problems...

Well, I've finally gotten kde 2.2 installed and I love the new libkdeprint. I'm a pastor by trade and have been stuck in windows because I need some pretty funky Greek and Hebrew fonts for my weekly research; fonts which I can only find in .ttf format and couldn't be printed at any rate (yes, I know there were fixes, I never got one to work for me). Now with kde 2.2 I can at last use these fonts in Linux, with one major glitche... 1) They only show up in my "usable fonts" combo box in koffice when anti-aliasing is turned on. This would not be a problem except for the fact that... a) My pitifully Celeron 366 take FOREVER to load kde programs with anti-aliasing turned on (ever waited 30 seconds for a shell to open up, it's not fun...) b) My laptop's display isn't supported by kde's anti-aliasing yet (Inspiron 3800). So my primary research tool can't be used. Any ideas/workarounds/hacks to overcome this glitch? Also, with anti-aliasing turned on, my desktop machine won't allow me to submit forms (like e-mail), in konqueror. Any ideas? (I'm going to submit a bug report). Wes

apache and SetOutputFilter

Hi Fellas, I'm trying to configure apache to handle .shtml files. I don't know much about apache configuration, so i got some info from apache.org about this. i ended up with this config chunck # put in so we can use .shtml files in /home/httpd/includes <Directory "/home/httpd/includes"> Options +Includes # (took from http://www.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_include.html) <IfModule mod_include.c> AddType text/html .shtml <FilesMatch "\.shtml(\..+)?$"> SetOutputFilter INCLUDES </FilesMatch> </IfModule> </Directory> When i parse the config file i get this # httpd -t Syntax error on line 408 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Invalid command 'SetOutputFilter', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration any suggestions here? i'm using the apache that came with red hat 7.0 Thanks, --Brad

gettin' the Sparc Classic on the network...

Hello all, Settin' up the box I won at the last WLUG meeting. I wanna get it on the network here at work. When I watch the boot messages, I see "eth0 LANCE <mac address>" and "eth0 using auto-carrier-detection", but i don't see an entry for /dev/eth0 when i look there. I can ping the local loopback, but when I try to use DHCP in linuxconf to let it grab an address, but in ifconfig, i still only see the entry for the local loopback. stat syscall in RH7.1

Hi Fellas I'm trying to get a shared library to work with my red hat 7.1 system. The problem is; when the library makes a system call to stat() i get "<./myprog> error while loading shared libraries: <mylib.so>: undefined symbol: stat". I have tried this on other distro's (debian, namely), and it was able to make the syscall just fine. Any ideas? The "GENERIC" manufacturer scares me a bit... Though on the same vein, I saw that Short-circuit city is selling "Centon" 256MB PC100 ram for 44.99 after rebate. Once again, I'm not sure if Centon is any better than GENERIC. Though for 120 bucks I could have 2gig of ram in my machine (provided my motherboard would support more than 128mb per slot)! Hmmm... now I just need a server motherboard that has like 12 memory slots!!! (kneeds hands together thinking about having to turn on BIGMEM stuff in kernel :-P) I went looking on http://www.thechipmerchant.com/19633-0.html (which I've had great luck with buying stuff) and it looks like there selling something comparable for 50.00 bucks... however they gave specific chipsets it would work with. Network Install

I freely confess my inexperience. I have done a number of successful CDROM installs from Mandrake 6.1-7.1-7.2. I have an old box I scrounged but without a servicable CDROM drive. I want to install Linux on it, but need to do a Network Install. I am not finding detailed documentation on this and will continue to hunt. If anyone has a hint as to where to look or experience to kick me in the pants in the right direction I would be terribly grateful. Thanks Colin

Do a home network and hack it together. The sugguestion about getting involved in help-desk work is really good too because all of the sudden you HAVE to learn all this stuff so you can help people (though you may go insane doing it, "I've got 600 messages in my "saved" box on the mail server, should I have backed these up on my local machine?"). If you've got a friend who is a system admin start talking to them as you hack your network, this will have to be a good friend who will not mind giving you advice for free that he charges other people for; but friends can put into English what man pages can only put into "networkspeak", without friends, I'd never even tried to learn linux and would still be a slave of Microsoft. Problem with X

Hi All, I have XFree36 3.x installed and can use startx to launch icewm. When I install KDE2 and run startx it crashes with the following (paraphrased) message: ksmserver: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 ksplash: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 kdeinit: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 knotify: Error in loading shared library libGL.so.1 grep /root/.kde2/.root_warning file not found. I tried 'startx icewm' with the same results As soon as I uninstall KDE2 startx works again. Why would startx be broken even if I am not starting KDE2. Thanks, Mike

It looks like I'm finally going to have time to go out and pick up a serial cable so I can get brother Bill off of my iPAQ. But I've got a question for anyone who has done this ahead of me: Are there any speadsheets that have either been created for familiar linux or Embedded QT? The QTpalmtop web site has got some screen shots, and one has a link to a spreadsheet, but they don't mention it and I can't find the package anywhere. Unfortuately, I've got to have a spreadsheet so I can keep track of hours and expenses and such, so I'm kinda stuck, maybe I shoulda gotten a vr3? Also, are there any utilities out there that would allow me to do irsync with palms?

I'll grab the name later, but there is a place on route 30 in Westborough that will build a PC to spec and put whatever distro you want on it. They're primarily a windows office, but when I asked about Linux they said, "Sure, we've been getting more and more requests for Linux lately and we'll put whatever you want on it!" This makes me happy. Like I said, I'll get the name/number later, but take rt 30 from 9 into town and you can't miss it on your left (about 100 yards before the traffic circle). I have been working as a Unix Sys Admin for Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) for the last few months, although I have been with the company for 3 years. I agree with what Gary said and additionally would add getting your foot in the door working at a helpdesk somewhere. I know from experience that most tech companies will look within before hiring from the outside to fill positions. I am running SuSE 7.0 with the 2.2.18? kernel. I have not compiled my own kernel before. Last night when attempting to upgrade to XFree86 4.1 I somehow f**ked up my configuration and can now only run X as root and I don't know what changed to cause that to happen. I had backed up my entire partition so the original configuration files are around but I am not sure which files I should restore to get back to my original configuration. I am contemplating upgrading to SuSE 7.2 with the 2.4.x kernel and reformatting my partition to be a Rieserfs file system. System crash

Hi all, I have been having problems with my system locking to the point where I needed to press the reset button to recycle the box. Well, this happened again and this time things are not working properly after bringing the system back up. I have been able to start networking services and I can start KDE desktop but none of my X applications will run. Now I have several questions: 1) What type of problems could have been created by an improper shutdown of the box? 2) Will reinstalling KDE fix this problem? 3) How do I go about figuring out what is causing my machine to lock up? Possible topic for the next meeting?

Greetings, I don't know whether there is a topic for the next meeting and it just hasn't made it onto the web page or not, but I figured I'd offer a suggestion to the group. Is anyone interested on seeing a presentation on the various DVD players that are available for Linux along with their setup. hardware support, and configuration, etc? I'm headed to the west coast next week for a 7-day Alaskan cruise, and I really need something to do for the 6-hour plane ride each way other than watching Top Gun. I'd be happy to do so, but I figured I'd ask the group instead of just mailing Andy as "installing and running a couple of apps in Linux" might be on the light side for a presentation. If people are interested and there's already something for this month, just let me know and I'll write something up. bizzare font behavior

Hey all, Each time i boot my machine it seems to toggle between two interpretations of 12pt fonts. There seems to be a random patten for my computer interpreting fonts. One time it will be really, small, the next boot, it will have big fonts. The font configuration is the same (mostly size 10pt font in KDE2). But each time the computer boots, i have no idea if I'm going to be able to read the fonts on my screen, or if it's going to be too big. It's on a RH7.1 i installed few weeks ago. I have KDE2 running, and i have the graphical login window when i boot. Any ideas? Thanks, --Brad

ipaq and QTe

Hey Gang, I finally installed linux on my ipaq, and installed QT embedded last night, and part of this morning. I like it so far, there are a few things that are missing, one of which i find to be a real big down side. I can't seem to turn off the back light. I don't want all my batter sucked up from the backlight. Anyone else have this problem know how to fix this, or have any suggestions? i was also wondering if anyone knows of any/some good sync tools, for linux, and the ipaq. Thanks, --Brad

cable mode and firewall...

Hi, I just got broadband at home and am loving every minute of it. But I'm hitting one snag... I dusted off an old sonicwall we had lying around at my job and got permission to take it home, after hacking the firewall I got everything set up and ready to go, my wan was hooked up to the cable modem, my lan was hooked up to the hub, the dhcp server was set up, and I had NAT w/dhcp client as the default setting. So I reboot the firewall and it doesn't get an ip address! I erase any trace of the older, static, settings, and try again, noting. Has anyone else got this problem? I'm stuck with Charter communications, do they have some way to avoid giving addresses to firewalls; if so, hello DSL my wife is tied to windows and I'm not shelling out money for something that comes built into linux. dan; yes, i can ping client to server and server to client. i looked at ipchains -L -n and the only source other than 0.0.0.0/0 was 192.168.1.1 which is the ip address of the server and the target was accept at ports 53 -> *. the other accept was prot all source 0.0.0.0/0 and ports n/a. everything else had target of reject (tcp udp) et.al. chain forward policy is accept chain output policy is accept now to be honest with you, i haven't much of a clue what the above means. hopefully, you do. any more help muchly appreciated. jim s

We print to this printer in Windows using a Windows 2000 print server. I am the maverick I want to dual boot Windows and Linux. Using CUPS (Common Unix Printing Service) with IPP, Socket, and other setup lines. Not sure of the command line for this. I tried editing the /etc/printcap, and /etc/printrc files. I Got the PDD for the HP 5Si printer. I thought maybe my editing of printcap or printrc was stopping the CUPS or other methods of setup from working so I went back to the original copies. Oh ya, before you say something simple like read the print man page--I did, also I went to Mandrake documentation, HP printing for Unix web page, read the documentation at Linuxprinting.org web site, Read the printing documentation at Red Hat web site. Not sure it is a HP Jetdirect network card in the printer. Though I suspect I could use HP Jetdirect software to set it up on a Windows machine. I guess what I really need is someone who has printed from a Linux variant to a networked HP printer. Everything I read says this is traditionally a hard issue because of varies issues. i am trying to set up a server using apache. at this point i do not want it to be connected to the internet so i am trying to use a second computer to log on with. here is what i have set up: 1. server ip=192.168.1.1 ( i am using the ip and by-passing name resolution at this point). i can ping 192.168.1.1 from the server as well as localhost. i can also get the default html page up. the only changes i have made to http.conf is: a. Listen *:80 b. ServerName 192.168.1.1 c. i added the following <Directory "/var/www/html"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> i can ping from server to client and client to server. 2. client when i try to log on to the server, i get 'netscapes network connection was refused by the server 192.168.1.1. the server may not be accepting connections or may be busy.' any help would be appreciated jim stith

vmware crash

Hi all, I have had vmware running on my system for a couple of weeks. Tonight when starting vmware my system locked up (no keyboard or mouse response) and I had to press the reset key. After bring the system up when I attempt to 'power on' vmware I get a message that says: Could not open /dev/vmnet0: No such device. How do I make this device available? After the reboot it was necessary to issue 'insmod vmmon'. Thanks, Mike

After reviewing the logs sent to us we determined that in fact someone had released a worm into the Internet that was spreading rapidly through IIS web servers. The full analysis of the .ida "Code Red" worm has provided numerous new details as to the functionality and method of propagation of this worm. For instance this worms purpose ultimately seems to be to perform a denial of service attack against www.whitehouse.gov. Also it has been found that only US English Windows NT/2000 systems will show the defaced ("Hacked by Chinese !") web page. We've designated this the .ida "Code Red" worm, because part of the worm is designed to deface web pages with the text "Hacked by Chinese" and also because code red mountain dew was the only thing that kept us awake all last night to be able to disassemble this exploit even further. Explanation =========== As stated earlier the .ida "Code Red" worm is spreading throughout IIS web servers on the Internet via the .ida buffer overflow attack that was published weeks ago. The following are the steps that the worm takes once it has infected a vulnerable web server. 1. Setup initial worm environment on infected system. 2. Setup a 100 threads of the worm 3. The first 99 threads are used to spread the worm (infect other web servers). -The worm spreads itself by creating a sequence of random IP addresses. However, the worm's randomization of IP addresses to attack is not all together random. In fact there seems to be a static seed that the worm uses when generating new IP addresses to try to attack. Therefore every computer infected by this worm is going to go through the same list of random IP addresses to try to infect. The "problem" with that is that the worm is going to end up reinfecting systems and also end up crossing traffic back and forth between hosts to end up creating a denial of service type affect because of the amount of data that will be transferred between all the IP addresses in the sequence of random IP addresses. The worm could have done truly random IP generation and that would have allowed it to infect a lot more systems a lot faster. We are not sure why that was not done but a friend of ours did pose an interesting idea... If the person who wrote this worm owned an IP address that was one of the first hundred or thousand etc... to be scanned then they could setup a sniffer and anytime and IP address tried to connect to port 80 on their IP address they would know that the IP address that connected to them was infected with the worm and they would therefore be able to create a list of the majority of systems that were infected by this worm. 4. The 100th thread checks to see if it is running on a English (US) Windows NT/2000 system. -If the infected system is found to be a English (US) system then the worm will proceed to deface the infected systems website. That means... the local web servers web page will be changed to a message that says Welcome to http://www.worm.com !, Hacked By Chinese!. This hacked web page message will stay "live" on the web server for 10 hours and then disappear and never appear again unless the infected system is re-infected by another host. -If the system is not a English (US) Windows NT/2000 system then the 100th worm thread is also used to infect other systems. 5. Each worm thread checks for c:\notworm -If the file c:\notworm is found, the worm goes dormant. -If the file is not found then each thread will continue to attempt to infect more systems. 6. Each worm thread will now check the infected computers time. -If the time is between 20:00 UTC and 23:59 UTC then the worm will proceed to use this thread to attack www.whitehouse.gov. The attack consists of the infected system sending 100k bytes of data to port 80 of www.whitehouse.gov therefore potentially performing a denial of service attack against www.whitehouse.gov. -If the time is below 20:00 UTC then this worm thread will try to find and infect new web servers. In testing we have calculated that the worm can attempt to infect roughly half a million IP addresses a day and that was a ruff estimate made from using a very slow network. As of writing this document (July 18 6:49pm) we have had reports from administrators that have been probed by over 12 thousand unique hosts. That basically means at least 12 thousand hosts have been infected by this worm. In testing we have seen that sometimes the worm does not execute correctly and will continue to spawn new threads until the infected machine crashes and has to be rebooted. We have not been able to isolate the cause of this behavior. Commentary ========== As we sat and watched this worm spread itself through the Internet we were somewhat dumbfounded as to the number of reported systems being infected. The main reason for that is that this worm is using a, what we thought to be, very well known vulnerability. A patch for this vulnerability has been available for over a month now and at the time of the release of the vulnerability many news agencies ran stories about it therefore trying to spread awareness. Even with all of that though there have still been, at the very least, 12 thousand web servers infected by this worm. So we once again encourage administrators to pay attention to security issues and patch their systems as soon as patches are available for holes. All of this research would not be available if we were not a Full Disclosure company and if the many people who helped us research this worm were against full disclosure. Although we did not release any exploit code for the .ida vulnerability, the computer underground still had no problem creating a devastating worm. In the past we have seen a much higher percentage of patched systems when example exploit code was provided. System administrators do not believe vulnerabilities exist without a public exploit, or until something like this worm happens forcing them to patch their systems. We feel that if the security community moves away from Full Disclosure more incidents like this will happen and everyone will be left in the dark as to what is going on. An example of why full disclosure is so important would be this worm itself. Chances are this worm would have not been discovered if we had not fully disclosed details about the .ida vulnerability, allowing Intrusion Detection System vendors to create signatures for the .ida buffer overflow attack. Because of the way that IIS performs logging (logging a request after processing it), servers hit with this worm will actually have no traces of information left in the IIS log files making tracking this worm (via IIS logs) virtually impossible. The first instances of _anyone_ learning anything useful about this worm was via Intrusion Detection Systems that had signatures based on our .ida vulnerability research which would not have been there if not for full disclosure. The computer underground continues to find vulnerabilities everyday. If full disclosure goes away, then the general security community is left in the dark, and therefore so are administrators. More and more we are seeing an increase in worms attacking the Internet. There have been about 2 or 3 worms in as many months. Worms force computer security to become a global issue. With the rise of the Internet, not only do you have to worry about securing your own systems, you must also be careful of your "neighbors" systems. For instance with this worm even if you have done everything right (installed the .ida patch etc...) your network connection could still be taken down because of the amount of data flooding you from all of the "other guys" who hadn't applied patches and were infected by this worm. It is important to not only maintain your own security but make sure that other people you come in contact with secure their sites. Only with global cooperation to maintain security will the threat of worms start disappear. We received information from "friends" that leads us to believe that this worm is actually a derivative of another worm which was written to exploit the first ever remote IIS buffer overflow (also discovered by eEye Digital Security), the .htr buffer overflow. From reports, the .htr worm had a much smaller infection base and seemed to go under the radar probably because the .htr vulnerability was/is very old. Deep Analysis ============= The following is a very detailed analysis of what the worm is doing at each step of its infection. Full disassembled and commented worm code is available at our website at http://www.eeye.com/html/advisories/codered.zip. It will be provided as both a assembly text dump and as a IDA (Interactive Disassembler) database file. We have chosen not distribute the worm code in this eMail as to not clog up your bandwidth anymore then we already are >:-] Note: We will use CODEREF comments in the analysis to reference where we are in the disassembled code so you can "follow along" with us. The tools that we used to perform this detailed analysis were: IDA (Interactive Disassembler) from www.datarescue.com. IDA is an advanced disassembler that made this analysis possible. MS VC++ debugging environment. We used this to monitor modified pieces of the worm as they interacted with IIS. Ryan's brain + Marc's brain + private eEye tools. No... you cant have any of those. We will be heavily referencing the disassembled worm code in the following analysis. In an attempt to make this easier to understand we have broken the functionality of the worm into 3 parts. The core worm functionality, the worm hack web page functionality and the attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality. Core worm functionality ----------------------- 1. Initial infection vector (i.e. host is vulnerable to the .ida attack and gets hit with this worm). The initial infection starts to take place when a web server, vulnerable to the .ida attack, is hit with a HTTP get request that contains the necessary code to exploit the .ida attack and uses this worm as its payload. The code at 0x7801CBD3 disassembles to: call ebx When EIP is overwritten with call ebx it then causes program flow to divert back to the stack. The code on the stack jumps into the worm code that's held in the body of the initial HTTP request. 2. Sets up some initial stack variables CODEREF: seg000:000001D6 WORM At this point we are executing the initial code of the worm. The first thing to happen is that the worm sets up a new stack for its own use. The new stack is 218h bytes, filled with CCh. The worm code then moves on to initialize its function jump table. The entire worm heavily uses an EBP stack based memory offset system. This means that all variables are referenced as EBP-X values. On our website we have a document called worm-ebp.txt that attempts to track stack usage throughout the course of the worm code. 3. Load functions (create the "jump table") CODEREF: seg000:00000203 DataSetup The first thing the worm code does is reference the data portion of the exploit code at EBP-198h. The worm then needs to setup its internal function jump table. A function jump table is a stack based table used to store function addresses. It allows the worm to generate the function addresses at run time (This makes the worm have a better chance of executing cleanly on more systems). The technique used by this worm is what is called an RVA (Relative Virtual Addresses) lookup. Basically this means that all functions, or specifically GetProcAddress, are found within IIS itself. For more details on RVA please consult any good PE (Portable Executable, the executable file format for Microsoft platforms) documentation, or read through the assembly code of this worm. In a nutshell, RVA techniques are used to get the address of GetProcAddress. GetProcAddress is then used to get the address of LoadLibraryA. Between these two functions all other functions that the worm may need can be easily found. The worm uses these two functions to load the following functions: >From kernel32.dll: GetSystemTime CreateThread CreateFileA Sleep GetSystemDefaultLangID VirtualProtect >From infocomm.dll: TcpSockSend >From WS2_32.dll: socket connect send recv closesocket Finally the worm stores the base address of w3svc.dll which it will later use to potentially deface the infected website. 4. Check the number of threads the worm has created. CODEREF: seg000:00000512 FUNC_LOAD_DONE Here the worm seems to perform a WriteClient (Part of the ISAPI Extension API), sending "GET" back to the attacking worm. This possibly could be a way of telling attacking worms that they have successfully infected a new host. Next the worm code will count the number of worm threads already in action. If the number of threads is 100 then control is shifted to the Worm hack web page functionality. If the number of threads is below 100 then the worm creates a new thread. Each new thread is an exact replica of the worm (Using the same code base). The worm now continues its path of execution. 6. Checks for the existence of c:\notworm CODEREF: seg000:0000079D DO_THE_WORK There seems to be a to be built in "lysine deficiency" (See Jurassic Park, or Caesar's paper on this at www.rootkit.com) A "lysine deficiency" is a built in check to keep malicious code from spreading further. In this case the "lysine deficiency" is a check for the existence of the file c:\notworm. If this file exists then the worm will become dormant. This means it will not attempt to make connections out to other IP addresses to try to infect. If this file does not exist then the worm continues onto the next step. 7. Check the infected systems time (computer clock) CODEREF: seg000:00000803 NOTWORM_NO The worm will now check the infected systems local time (in UTC). If the hour is greater then 20:00 UTC then the worm will proceed to goto the first step of the attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality. If the time is less than 20:00 UTC then the worm will attempt to continue to try to infect new systems. 8. Infect a new host (send .ida worm to a "random" IP address on port 80). At this point the worm will resend itself to any IP addresses which it can connect to port 80 on. It uses multiple send()'s so packet traffic may be broken up. On a successful completion of send, it closes the socket and goes to step 6... therefore repeating this loop infinitely. Worm hack webpage functionality ------------------------------- This functionality is called after a hundred threads are spawned within the worm. 1. Check if local system default language is English us then goto step 6 of core worm functionality. CODEREF: seg000:000005FE TOO_MANY_THREADS The first thing the worm does is get the local codepage. A codepage specifies the local operating system language (I.E. English (US), Chinese, German etc...). It then compares the local codepage against 0x409. 0x409 is the codepage for English (US) systems. If the infected system is an English (US) system then the worm will proceed to deface the local systems webpage. If the local codepage is not English (US) then this worm thread will goto step 6 of core worm functionality. 2. Sleep for 2 hours. CODEREF: seg000:00000636 IS_AMERICAN This worm thread now sleeps for 2 hours. We anticipate that this is to allow the other worm threads to attempt to spread the infection before making a presence known via defacing the infected systems webpage. 3. Attempt to modify infected systems webpages in memory. CODEREF: seg000:0000064F HACK_PAGE This worm uses an interesting technique called "hooking" to effectively deface (alter) an infected systems webpages. Hooking is modifying code in memory to point to code that the worm provides. In this case the worm is modifying w3svc.dll to change the normal operation of a function called TcpSockSend. TcpSockSend is what w3svc.dll (IIS core engine) uses to send information back to the client. By modifying this, the worm is able to change data being written back to clients who request web pages of an infected server. To perform hooking, first the worm makes the first 4000h bytes of w3svc.dll's memory writable. In a normal situation the memory for w3svc.dll (and basically all mapped dll's) is read-only. It uses the function VirtualProtect to change the memory of w3svc.dll to be writable, saving the old state to a stack variable. It then uses the saved codebase of w3svc.dll (from step 3 of core worm functionality) as a start point to search the import table (again see PE header documentation) for the address of TcpSockSend. Once the address for TcpSockSend is located the worm then replaces TcpSockSend's actual address with an address within the worm. The address that TcpSockSend now points to is a function within the worm that will return the "Hacked by Chinese !" webpage. The CODEREF for this function is seg000:00000C9A FAKE_TCPSOCKSEND. This thread of the worm now sleeps for 10 hours. During this 10 hours all web requests to the infected server will return the "Hacked by chinese !" webpage. After the 10 hours is up this thread will return w3svc.dll to its original state, including re-protecting memory. Execution after this proceeds to step 6 of the core worm functionality. Attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality --------------------------------------- Sooner or later every thread within the worm seems to shift its attacking focus to www.whitehouse.gov. 1. create socket and connect to www.whitehouse.gov on port 80 and send 100k byes of data CODEREF: seg000:000008AD WHITEHOUSE_SOCKET_SETUP Initially the worm will create a socket and connect to 198.137.240.91 (www.whitehouse.gov/www1.whitehouse.gov) on port 80. CODEREF: seg000:0000092F WHITEHOUSE_SOCKET_SEND If this connection is made then the worm will create a loop that performs 18000h single byte send()'s to www.whitehouse.gov. CODEREF: seg000:00000972 WHITEHOUSE_SLEEP_LOOP After 18000h send()'s the worm will sleep for about 4 and a half hours. It will then repeat the attack against www.whitehouse.gov (goto step one of Attack www.whitehouse.gov functionality). Appendix ======== This is associated information about the "Code Red" worm including how to stop the worm, commentary on the worm, and dispelling common misconceptions about this worm. How to secure your system from this .ida "Code Red" worm? --------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft patch for this .ida vulnerability http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/ bulletin/MS01-033.asp The worm spreads itself to new vulnerable systems via the .ida vulnerability. Applying this patch will keep your server from being infected. However, as stated earlier, because of the way the worm creates its list of "random" IP addresses to attack, you could still be affected by a high traffic overload denial of service. eEye Digital Security Advisory for .ida vulnerability http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Advisories/AD20010618.html We initially discovered the .ida vulnerability which is being used by this worm as its infection vector. The above advisory details our research of that specific vulnerability. We worked with Microsoft to help them create a patch for the .ida vulnerability. SecureIIS - Application firewall, stops known and unknown IIS vulnerabilities. http://wwww.eeye.com/secureiis We do produce a product that protects IIS web servers from attack which is one of the reasons that we were so quick to research this worm. Funny enough in our initial testing we couldn't get the worm to work because we forgot we had SecureIIS enabled on the lab web server. heh. I have been infected by this worm what can I do? ------------------------------------------------ The first thing you must do is goto the Microsoft security site, as referenced above, and install the .ida patch ASAP. The worm will remain in memory until you reboot your server so make sure to reboot after installing the .ida patch. I think I am infected, how can I tell? -------------------------------------- An infected system will show an increase in load (processor/network). It will also show a number of external connections (or attempts) to port 80 of random IP addresses. You can see this by doing a "netstat -an" from a MS-DOS prompt. Either way do not take any chances... if your system is missing the .ida patch then install it ASAP and reboot. What that means is that this worm will be wild on the Internet until there is a _VERY_ high degree of systems that go and install the .ida patch. 2. This worm is based off of hsj's "proof of concept" .ida exploit. This worm is _NOT_ based off of hsj's "proof of concept" .ida exploit. His exploit code had no worm functionality. It was a simple exploit shell that had little to no implicit functionality. It was designed to prove to administrators the seriousness of this vulnerability so that they would install patches ASAP. routing question

Hey guys, I add a route like this: route add -net 10.1.0.0/24 gw 66.92.74.135 And it shows up fine in my routing tables... But if the other machine looses it's link to the 10.1.0.* address, my machine tries to route those addresses to it's default route. I think the gateway sends some kind of "It's not here anymore" packet? That's not a big deal since it just gets dropped at my default gateway, but when the link to the 10.1.0.* address comes back up, my machine doesn't ever re-try to get to it through the 66.92.74.135 gateway... Is there a way to force a route so it always goes through the gateway? Even after it does fail? Thanks, -Marc

USB hangs system - requires reboot

HI gang, I just installed SuSE 7.2 Professional and upgraded to the 2.4.6 kernel (SMP). For the very first time, I'm attempting to enable the USB controller on my motherboard to talk to my Epson 870 printer (which has both parallel and USB interfaces). The onboard controller is an 82371AB. I looked and noticed the following kernel modules loaded: usbcore printer usb-uhci I think this is correct. I've enabled verbose debugging messages in the kernel. I looked at /var/log/messages, and it is detecting my printer. Also, I ran a program called usbview and saw the printer there as well. OK so far. I tried: cat some_file > /dev/usblp0 I get about 1 line of output and then my entire system hangs (it completely ignores any keyboard input, mouse movements don't cause cursor movement, and the machine is unaccessible from the network). I end up reaching for the reset button and waiting forever for my disks to fsck (yes, Tim K. I'm seriously considering Reiser fs). :-) I'm not sure I know how to go about debugging this...any suggestions? Oh, by the way, I did insure that there were no parallel port modules in place that might somehow interfere. Hi Andy - Long time no see. 2 things: That kernel comes with EXT3 already integrated in the source. Once you have an ext3 kernel you can enable it by changing fstab. Disable it by changing fstab. The on-disk structure is the same. Start debugging by booting with the second CPU turned off. You could be locking on MP bug. Problem with network card

Hi guys, This message is not actually a Linux based question, but is still "nix". I have recently installed Solaris 8 (for Intel) on a PC at work and am having problems connecting to the network. I think that the problem is related to the speed that the NIC is trying to use when connected to the LAN. I suspect this because the little green speed indicator for 100mb is illuminated (on the NIC) when the workstation is connected to the network jack. Hi, I've had Charter for almost a year and have had no problems. Except my modem going last month.. that was the first real big problem. Like any ISP.. they have had a few outages here in Auburn, but they didn't last more than 2 hours. I had no problems getting my Linux (Mandrake)system working with it. I am new to the Mass. area, but I use to be a Sr. Network Admin with Charter Communications. The question that I have is are you using Charter@home or Charter Pipeline? If it is Charter@home then you have to make some different changes in your setup. You have to add some domain information. It took a while to finally Linux DHCP to with with Charter@home but we were able to figure it out. Having a problem with RPM... # rpm -qa |grep mozilla mozilla-0.9.1-ximian.4 nautilus-mozilla-1.0.3-ximian.3 mozilla-0.9.1-ximian.4 # rpm -e mozilla-0.9.1 error: "mozilla-0.9.1" specifies multiple packages # rpm -e mozilla-0.9.1-ximian.4 error: "mozilla-0.9.1-ximian.4" specifies multiple packages Any ideas on how I can actually remove those two identical packages that somehow got installed? Familiar Linux help...

Hello all. I am FINALLY getting an iPaq and want to flash the ROM to install familar linux (or QT embedded). I've been looking over the howtos but I think I would feel better to have someone who's done this sitting over my shoulder so I don't make a $600 paperweight. Also, can someone tell me what apps are in ipkg format for familiar, I've been having trouble finding them? What about the possibility of switching between QT embedded and X for other useful apps (like, game boy emulators, for instance, or even the Atari Lynx...). Can anyone help me with this? Wes

Connected to the controller are 2 4gig disks I've got configured to be mirrored using the hardware raid. (when doing the install you only see 1 4 gig disk) Now Mandrake 7.2 installs fine, and when using a boot floppy can see the controller etc... however when booting off of the controller, lilo comes up, it finds the kernel image and then stops at "unpacking the kernel..." I am running SuSE 7.0 and would like to use the USB version of SanDisk ImageMate for transfering pictures from my digital camera. When I try to mount the device I get the following: mount usbdevfs mount: usbdevfs already mounted or /proc/bus/usb busy mount: according to mtab, usbdevfs is already mounted on /proc/bus/usb I have tried to RTFM and found quite a bit of info but do not know how to pull it all together in such a way to mount my drive and get the pictures off of the CompactCard. new machine questions

Howdy all - I'd like to replace my computer (P100) with something newer and significantly faster (but nothing bleeding edge; I'm looking for good-value speed). I'm thinking up to 1GHz (P3?). I want 16/24b color and since I've been out of it awhile I don't know anything about card makers anymore (like what's good, compatible, etc.) or if the std these days is on-board video. I've used Linux for years and want something that will allow me to get/use a scanner (first time; SCSI or USB? recommendations?) and CD-RW (recommendations). I have magazines and documents I want to scan and store on tape or CD. But what's most important is that I be able to generate some sort of index so that I can search the scanned documents (like keywords or text). What do I need for that? Can someone recommend hardware/software for this purpose? I haven't been a 'PC expert' for many years (and don't want to become one again :->) and am therefore no longer up on the latest PC technologies by way of mb, bus speeds, what's a value and what's a waste of money. Can anyone recommend hardware and someone local that sells build to order machines (no brand-names or CompUSA types)? Anything from Worcester to Shrewsbury to Marlboro to Acton to Natick, etc. Does anyone buy machines by mail and have anyone they'd recommend (or who to definitely avoid)? Thanks... I recently installed logcheck on my RH 7.0 systems and have been comforted and possibly entertained by how well it works. However this morning I started getting lengthy messages indicating what appears to be somebody trying to break in via a buffer overrun. I get this... Security Violations =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Jun 22 05:17:53 host SERVER[18075]: Dispatch_input: bad request line '..... followed by a lot of binary bytes ending in "/bin/sh" I've ad a couple "spurts" of this already today on two different systems; lasting about 2 minutes and then dissappearing. I'm guessing that whoever is trying this is [so far] being kept out, but I guess I'd like to know what is being hammered on as "SERVER" doesn't provide much help. Loki Games just released a Linux port of a game called "Mind Rover" Marc Hughes and myself have been having a lot of fun recently having our robots beat the crap out of each other. [quick mind rover synopsis] you pick a chassis (hovercraft, wheeled, treaded), you put your weapons and sensors all over the chassis, you then design the logic that drives the whole contraption. Along with the robots there are different scenarios, such as capture the flag and maze levels. I was wondering how many people would be interested in starting a "Mind Rover" competition inside wlug. If it were more than 10 people, we could get a bulk rate on Mind Rover. As for the actual mechanics of running the competitions, I'd like some input. Thanks for having an open ear!!! Tim.

GNU utils on Solaris 8

Greetings. I'm once again picking up a project that I left off on now that Sun's site has updated the downloadble ISOs for Solaris 8 Intel to the 04/01 version. In the past I've gotten a decently customized install and had GCC and some other essentials loaded, but I can never seem to hunt down all the GNU utilities that I need. The one that comes to mind off the top of my head is 'ar', which is part of binutils, and I can't compile binutils as it needs 'ar'. I've scoured www.sunfreeware.com to no avail (though there is some great stuff on there that I always snag), nor is there a version on my system already. Any ideas? Brian J. vim errors

Hi all, I'm having troubles with using vim over a telnet session. When i telnet into my machine and start up vim it sits there for while, until i hit ctl-c, then i get this error Error detected while processing /usr/local/share/vim/vimrc Interrupted Error detected while processing /net/fire/home/bnoyes/.vimrc: regular VI works fine. vim works if i ssh into the host. vim also works fine if i telnet into the machine from windows (using putty). but no luck if i telnet from a linux machines. dual PII/PIII motherboard of questionable origin up for grabs

The WPI Linux Association received a donation of a SuperMicro SUPER P6DBE dual PII/PIII 440BX motherboard (http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/440BX/p6dbe.htm) The original owner upgraded because it was flaky and thought the parallel port was bad, but upon buying a new motherboard found that it was his fubared sound card causing flakiness, so I'm under the assumption that this motherboard should be good or at least workable, but of course there are NO GUARANTEES. As we currently have no use for it and I'd hate to see it go to waste, get back to me if you'd like it, but please only do so if you'll put it to good use, I'd hate to see something like this go to waste. Handspring & Linux

All, I recently "upgraded" from a Palm IIIx to a Handspring Visor Deluxe (screen on the IIIx went South. 8( ). As you might be aware, the Handspring Visor comes with a USB cradle. ssh2 -> openssh

Tonight I tried (briefly) to convert to openssh from ssh2, and I ran into trouble. Maybe someone has an idea. The two machines in question are at RedHat 6.1 and RedHat 7.0. I built ssh2 (version 2.4.0) on each machine, and the install went smoothly on both sides. I have been happy with it. Then a friend suggested openssh. So I thought I'd try to convert. Since I could not find a ready-build openssl and openssh rpm for 6.1, I build openssh 2.9p1 and openssl 0l.6.6a. On my 7.0 box, I used the rpm's from the distro. I deinstalled the ssh2 code using "make install". I did not try to remove any other files, but I did stop all ssh2 processes. The install of the openssh code went just fine. I could log into my 7.0 box from my 6.1 box (I can't go the other way due to a company firewall), but the port mapping did not work. (I used the "-R 19999:box1:23" to give me access back through the company firewall.) I'm wondering if I'm running into basic code problems, or is it likely that the ssh2 installation needs some careful manual cleanup prior to decommission it. I'm back running ssh2, but I'd like to stick with open source, if possible. Suggestions? Thanks, Bill

DVD RAM

HI gang, I saw a note on SuSE's website advertising their upcoming release of version 7.2 In that press release, they boasted about supporting the new Panasonic DVD RAM drive (LF-D291), which supports writing 9.6 GB on a two sided medium. I know that reading a DVD is supported on recent (2.4.x) kernels, and also on some later 2.2.x kernels, and that patches exist for earlier 2.2.x kernels. (Data mode, like a giant CD...not DVD video). What I would like to know is: what is required of Linux to support writing a DVD RAM device. Do I need a program analogous to xcdroast? Linux on a Dell laptop dual-boot W2K

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has had any "good" experiences installing Linux and W2K on the same machine? I currently have the following hardware setup: Dell Inspiron 8000 Laptop Pentium III 700mhz w/256MB RAM Toshiba DVD-ROM Integrated Actiontec 10/100MB NIC \ 56K Modem Intel® 815e AGPSet Chipset with 4X AGP 10GB HD - currently 1 partition NTFS file system My thoughts were to install Caldera e-Desktop 2.4 which I have had some success with. What I'm not sure about is re-partitioning the HD to accommodate 2 Operating Systems. Caldera comes with a slim version of Partition Magic, but I haven't had the opportunity to use it on NTFS, so that is where any suggestions would help. Thanks for the time. Matthew

It works fine, though the modem doesn't work... Another response sugguested reformatting the disk, if you haven't customized it much, follow this advice, it saves a lot of grief later. I also believe that NTFS support is still labeled "experimental" and "read only" in the kernel setup, so you may want to use FAT32 anyway (too bad win2k doesn't run off of ResierFS, huh?). For partitioning, I use Mandrake, so I've got diskdrake; but since you've got Caldera you may want to download something called GNUPartD, it's another graphical partitioning tool, under GPL, that is a replacement of disk druid. Double Dial Out

I was wondering if anyone knows the fix to the double dial problem? Whenever I dial out from my RH 6.1 Linux box (using Linuxconf) the system dials, connects, hangs-up and display "The Command /sbin/ifup ppp0 is taking longer than expected to complete. Please take action" Then it automatically re-dials and successfully connects. I found this reported in several Usenet groups and archives since 1999 but I have not seen a resolution. SCSI Tape Drive Question

We have a kicking VA Linux 4450 server with a VXA-V17 tape drive in it. Unfortunatly the tape drive isn't seen by linux. It shows up in the scsi bios utilities. There is no mention of a tape drive in dmesg or /var/log/messages after bootup, and it doesn't work when you try something like "mt -f /dev/st0 status". The drive is on scsi channel B, does that make a difference? Is there some way to scan the scsi bus manually? I checked /proc/config.gz and tape drive support is built in. Any ideas, suggestions? -Marc

"Couldn't find ext2 superblock..."

Using Darkstar Resque Disk to boot and look around a RH 6.2 installation. e2fsck -n /dev/hda1 results in Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks... e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hda1 Here are the questions: Can I fix the superblock? Or is it re-install time? Duplicate blocks are reported in hda12 (/) when I boot RH 6.2. Is it possible to fix that? RH6.2 boot in rescue mode from CD says fdisk unable to open hda but it is recognized by Darkstar Resque Disk. Unfortunately Darkstar only has partitions defined to hda9 and does not recognize hda12. Is it possible to rename a partition (hda12) to another name (hda5) from outside? I have a second system, Windows based, which allows me access to the internet for downloads, email, etc. Is there a way to download utilities on the Win machine and then execute them from a floppy on the Linux machine either booted into rescue mode from RH or from Darkstar floppy? XEmacs question - gnuserv/gnuclient

HI gang, I'm running XEmacs 21.1.8 and am playing with gnuserv/gnuclient. Within XEmacs, I do M-x gnuserv-start (which seems OK). In a terminal window on the same machine, I type gnuclient and another XEmacs window pops up quite quickly (as I expect). However, I can't get this to work from another machine on my home network. I played with the xauth stuff and also tried setting the GNU_SECURE environment variable to no avail. Clearly I've done something wrong but I don't know what. Can somebody walk me through the steps? I'm expecting that if I run gnuserv on machine 'tux' that I can set the security so that I can access that gnuserv process from machine 'andypc' by typing the correct incantation of the gnuclient command on 'andypc'. Hostname

Thanks for the help with realaudio. Now it is working fine. My next question concerns how the hostname is published. When I look at the DHCP clients table provided by my router software the windoze boxes have published their hostname correctly but my linux box has published an incorrrect name. When I look at /etc/HOSTNAME the name is 'zeus' however then name that shows up in the clients table is '80'. What am I missing? thx, --mike

New WLUG website

HI everybody, The WLUG website has been moved to a new location. I'd like to thank Rob Bellville for hosting the WLUG website for us for the last 3.5 years! Unfortunately, the ISP that Rob was using is "going away" so the site needed a new home. Chuck Anderson has volunteered to host the WLUG website on his machine - thanks, Chuck! I will still maintain my role to keep the site up to date with meeting announcements and such. The change should be totally transparent to all of you. You will continue to access the site via: http://www.wlug.org You will know if you are seeing the new site since it says "**NEW**" near the top. As the DNS change is propagated around the Internet, eventually you'll all see the new site. Don't freak out if you don't catch the new site immediately...they both have identical content. RealPlayer and Linksys

I have configured several boxes at home behind a Linksys router #BEFSR81. Both my windoze and linux boxes are able to connect through the router however Realaudio only connects through the router successfully on my windoze box. On the linux box I have installed it successfully but cannot get get it to connect through the router. What should I be looking at in order to solve this? I tried looking at preferences and tried Auto-Configure to no avail. Unfortunately I do not know what RTSP or PNA is or how to use it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. thx, mike

Shifting partitions?

A fast question: Anyone have experience with the stability of and general wisdom of shifting the Linux partition on a hard drive on a dual boot machine? I am trying to upgrade to a newer kernel and am presented with not enough memory on the Linux side of the drive. Encountered error message: <<An error occurred. Tour system has not enough space left for installation or upgrade (366821583>188726600)>> If the endeavor is too risky I can sacrifice the current Linux install, wipe the partition and install from scratch. (That does undermine the whole benefit of purchasing the proprietary upgrade package though.) Thanks. Colin

compaq deskpro

well here goes... i got an old compaq deskpro (yes, a stupid mistake... but it was cheap) and wanted to load red hat 7.0 on it and possibly use the deskpro as a intranet server so that i could learn how to set a server up. everything loads fine but when the system tries to go into x and give me a login screen, the monitor makes a poping sound and the screen goes blank. same thing with mandrake and caldera. the screen stays blank. i have gone into the bios and disabled pnp and energy saver but that does not help. i have been going through the faq's and the only thing i have found out is that compaq did some strange things around the mbr. i have no other options open to me and would appreciate any help anyone can give concerning this. thanks jim s.

newbie seeks help with kernel upgrade

Hi, and thank you in advance for your patience. This deals with upgrading kernel In attempting to install vmware 2.0 in Red Hat 6.2, I was notified that I needed an upgrade to RH6.2 kernel. While trying to install the kernel upgrade with rpm I received error messages: 1) failed dependencies: rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0.1 is needed by kernel-2.2.19-6.2.1 2) mount < 2.10r conflicts with kernel-2.2... 3) nfs-utils < 0.3.1 conflicts with kernel-2.2... I understand that I can ignore the conflicts (2,3) by specifying --replacefiles in the rpm command. I decided to upgrade rpm assuming that rpmlib would be included. Using gnorpm I downloaded rpm 4.0-4 and received another error: only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this release of rpm. Presumably this message is issued by the currently version of rpm 3.0.4-0.48. This may be a red herring and not important as I continued. I used ncftp to download by specifying "mget rpm-*.rpm" and received four files rpm-4.0.2-6x.i386.rpm, also -build-, -devel-, -python- from RH site. When I tried to install rpm-4.0.2-6x I received an error: failed dependency libdb-3.1.so. Where can I find libdb? How could I determine that for myself if I run into another dependency? Do you have any suggestions/recommendations regarding updating kernel? I am using instructions retrieved from RH titled "Upgrading the Linus Kernel on Red Hat Linux systems" by Red Hat Support last updated 2000 May 17 -- Thank you, Dan Crooks

Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held in Kinnicutt Hall (a.k.a the usual place) at WPI at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 16h. The topic for discussion will be the practical use of IPCHAINS. What does that mean? This meeting, Doug Waud and I will present to you ways to use IPCHAINS to implement a firewall. This is not theory, this is practice...what to type, what it does, and why. This talk will build on the more detailed information presented by Bob Ziegler at our last meeting. Doug will start with a presentation of the simpler case of getting a firewall up which supports masquerading (that is, getting multiple machines on your home network to share one IP address, as you would for cable modem, for example), e-mail, and browsing. I will follow up with more detailed examples of IPCHAINS code from my own firewall script for allowing certain services through the firewall to the home network. Although firewalling is a complex topic, we're hoping to distill out of that complexity enough information so that a person can get started toward implementing a secure firewall. Bill, Try doing a traceroute on port 22 to your machine and see where along the line it get stopped. It's probably a default security thing they have setup, you could probably call up tech support and have them remove the blocks for specific ports... Bill, I make it to the same point. Looks like the 10.254.1.2 is the gateway onto that segment of Ethernet, this would indicate that they do blocking at the router (at least to me and i'm not a network expert...) I got my new Charter cable modem and Linksys router set up recently, but I find that Charter seems to be blocking inbound access. I've the the sshd running, and I set the router to pass port 22 to my linux box. I can even connect if I ssh outbound to the router DHCP address, so it looks like my end of the configuration is correct. Anybody experience anything like this? Do you think that Charter will allow incoming requests to my system? TIA, Bill

remote backup...

Hey Guys, I have a dedicated web server that I need to backup (entirely). Unfortunately there's not enough room for me to make a tar archive on the machine, and there's no tape drive either in the machine or at that facility that we can efficiently use. We get charged for bandwidth usage, so I would like to compress the backup before it comes over the wire. Also, this is a one time deal, so I can't go spending massive amounts of cash on some commercial backup software. Any Suggestions? -Marc

CDMA compatible phone and Linux...

Hey Everybody, Has anybody ever had any luck getting a CDMA phone (Motorola StarTAC) to work with Linux? I went looking and found software that would let you alter the phone-book on the phone, but didn't do anything about dialing. I'm figuring its either a) shows up like a Hayes device (which would be wonderful) or b) it uses some totally undocumented proprietary protocol I'll be forced to reverse engineer... Tim.

Hey guys, I know there are two lists, one for questions and one for announcements, hope this is the right one. Here is the question, hopefully someone knows or can point me to a good resource. I have the following system: Athlon TB 750, 256meg, ABIT KT7 RAID 2x20gig Hard Drives on RAID 0 Striping - Win2k Server Installed. (hde&hdf) 1x13 gig HD With Linux Mandrake 8.0 Installed. (hda) 1x60 gig HD for data. (hdb) I would like to have LILO come up first and then give me the option of booting to the Windows RAID Drives. However, if I boot to my 13 gig drive from the BIOS, and have LILO come up I can not get it to boot to the windows partitition. I have put in the entries to lilo.conf to boot to (hde) But that didnt work, /sbin/lilo gives errors (dont have them in front of me now:( ) I also tried to point it towards hdf, but that gave errors saying no valid boot sector etc. Sooo now in order to boot both OSs I need to have the BIOS load the RAID array as the default, and use a floppy to boot to linux. I can only think that lilo is having a problem knowing what drive to point to to load up windows since it is a raid array... This make sense? Thanks! Bill Bill

Well, so far it's not been a problem, although I keep a close watch on suspicious activity. (You'll notice entries for hosts allow and hosts deny. So far that seems to be pretty effective, although I do notice twits trying to access and being denied): hosts allow = 192.168.3.0/255.255.255.224 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0 128.119.216.0/255.255.255.0 216.175.212.192/255.255.255.240 hosts deny = all # <- no other machines can access Perhaps you could suggest conf options that allows [incoming] connections, but don't broadcast availability (i.e. is 'invicible' to all but people that know that that machine is a smb server). As I said, I'm not samba expert! Andy, Thank you for the leads. I genuinely appreciate all of your time. I have been trying to chase the leads down. When I: ps ax | grep lpd I get: 419 ? S 0:00 lpd 906 pts/0 S 0:00 grep lpd It appears that I have the older file nomenclature of conf.modules and not modules.conf. It should work just the same though. Under modprobe -c I get a note: Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/modules.dep In the listing that follows I do have: alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc alias char-major-6 lp There is nothing for parport or lp under "options", Under "commands" I have: pre-install plip modprobe parport_pc ; echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq I have to be honest with you and say that I am not sure what that actually means for the system mounting of appropriate the modules or not. HI everybody, For our next meeting, I would like to have somebody finish the thread from the last meeting or two by explaining the contents of their firewall script and why the series of ipchains commands works for them. This might be helpful to folks who are either considering implementing a firewall or who want to understand the canned script that they got from wherever. My idea for a subsequent meeting was to have a newbie meeting as we haven't had one in quite some time. One idea I had was to discuss a shell: a) bash - scripting, command line "tricks" perhaps go over a "real" script, such as a startup script in /etc/init.d/wherever... Another idea would be to discuss the use of digital cameras with Linux. Are there other topics people would like to see? Are there volunteers to take on these topics? Andy, Mike, Wesley, Jeff, et. al, thanks for helping me out on this. So here is where I stand, I have discovered a backlog of queued docs and deleted them, but I am getting Device or resource busy when I try to insmod the two missing pieces from lsmod. Here is what I tried: parport_probe and parport are present in lsmod; lp and parport_pc are missing /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/ lp.o and parport_pc.o are present when I go to... [root@localhost misc]# insmod parport_pc I get Using parport_pc.o /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/parport_pc.o: init_module: Device or resource busy and the same for lp.o Using lp.o /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/lp.o: init_module: Device or resource busy So I am missing elements in lsmod, and there is something holding me back from using insmod. Then I: lpq -P lp0 (and get) Waiting for lp0 to become ready (offline ?) Rank Owner Job Files 1st root 9 ... I try to clear this with lprm - -Plp0 dfA009localhost.localdomain dequeued cfA009localhost.localdomain dequeued The when I: lpq -P lp0 no entries I return to try to insmod lp and still get Using /lin/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/lp.o /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/misc/lp.o: init_module: Device or resource busy So what now? Go up to 7.2, it's x-configuration has been painless for me on: An HP Pavillion 4450 A Compaq Deskpro 3 old Pentium NOTEBOOKS (All compaq) 1 Custom-built web server 1 HP NetServer (I forget the model) 1 Dell 4800 notebook As you can see, there is great x-support in 7.2, it was really mature, 8.0 is even nicer, but if you're on older hardware don't bother becasue you'll take a HUGE performance hit (KDE 2.1 and Nautilus are memory suckers, maybe with a lightweight window manager you'll be ok though..) Lp0 issues

I have been making myself at home in KDE 1.1.2 under Linux 2.2.15-4mdk and have managed to slowly get most functionality off of the old Windows half of the dual boot drive. There is one major impediment to moving over entirely: I cannot print. I have an Epson Stylus Color 660, and can not make it work, reconfigure and test as I try. If I am not mistaken the system is using a ghostwriter filter that generically addresses Epson Stylus Color printers (I have tried all sorts of earlier drivers and generic options within this.) When you go to the setup and configuration there is no auto detect of the printer and type, You must manually chose it, and when you try any form of a test print you get: "Waiting for lp0 to become ready (offline?)" If you try to test print from RHLinux Print System Manager ASCII directly you get: "Couldn't write file "dev/lp0": no such device" When I try to print from an app. I get: "lpr: lp: lp: unknown printer" If you can spare a few seconds I would be thoroughly grateful for your thoughts.

That'll probably be really tough, since it won't even boot for the first time... What you could try is using a boot diskette to get the machine up and running, then compile a custom kernel that has support for the scsi card compiled in (not as a module) The kernel that the installer uses has -everything- compiled in so it'll work on a maximum number of systems, however, the kernel it installs on your machine does not. ipchains flush

I'm running three dual-homed RedHat 7.0 boxes on separate DSL or cable, each doing IP Masquerading to private networks. I'm attempting to do some more serious firewalling, and am trying to debug problems in a rc.firewall script generated from Bob Ziegler's site. I've noticed that when I swap between Bob's 600+ line script and Rusty's Three-Line Guide to Masquerading (IPCHAINS How-To) , each modified to start with "ipchains -F" which should flush all existing rules, that the flush isn't happening. I'm switching by doing "sh <scriptname>" after having made both scripts executable. If I reboot Linux after changing which script is referenced in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, then everything is clean. Just in case anyone here uses Debian and is thinking of installing Ximian1.4, the directions that say to apt-get install task-helix-gnome are wrong. I've gone and made some task packages based on what helix/ximian used to have for its previous release. SCSI HD Boot Failure! BLA!

Hello again all, I've just recently started putting together a Mandrake 8.0 box. (About 3 hours ago, yes in the middle of the night.) For a hard drive, I have an IBM SCSI Drive on an Adaptec 2940-U2 card. When I ran the install, it found the card and the drive automagically. I was impressed and happy. Went through the installation fine, copied all the files. But as soon as I rebooted to run it for the first time, I get the LILO graphical screen, I choose one of the options (any), and get the following error... request_module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted VFS: Cannot open root device "801" or 08:01 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01 Just some more information. The HD is on SCSI ID #6. The controller is on #7. The SCSI BIOS sees the drive because I can see it report it on boot. When I watch the boot messages fly by for Linux, I see no reference to any sd# devices at all. I'm really completely lost here. Would changing the SCSI ID # help? That doesn't seem to be likely. Tribes 2 and SMAC?

I got a posting in the mailing list about getting the LUG rate for Tribes 2 and SMAC, I am VERY interested in this; but I've not heard anything since the origional message went out. Are people still thinking about this?? On an unrelated note, Loki's online store is down and Tribes 2 is shipping NOW. I hope this a good sign that they're getting so many orders that it crashed their site. Being forward thinking, they have a fax number posted for an alternate ordering method. Way to go Loki! Wes

kde problem

Hi all I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook running SuSE 7.0 (personal edition) with kde as the window manager. For reasons unknown (to me at least) I can no longer click on an icon, for example, the shell icon, on the Kpanel and get a response. Also, the icons on the desktop, netscape and soffice, for example, have disappeared. Finally, if I click on the K menu button I can navigate out to the various programs, but again nothing responds. I can however, hit Alt/F2, get a command window, type in netscape, xterm or soffice, and the respective application comes up! I have searched the web and found no hints as to what might be going on. I happen to have the Que "Practical KDE" by Dennis Powell where, on page 46, under "Troubleshooting" there is a section "KDE starts but Applications won't". He suggests a chmod 1777 /tmp which I tried (and got drwxrwxrwt which says I didn't hit a typo) but the problem remained. I also tried chmod -RV 1777 /tmp to recursively chmod (I found several subdirectories in /tmp) but again without success. :-( The KDE version is 1.1.2 according to the SuSE box. The kernel is 2.2.12 (but, that, I suspect, is irrelevant). So, my specific question is "has anyone out there seen this and/or knows the solution/fix?". If not, a broader question is "what would you try next?" (without blowing away everything and reinstalling linux :-) --- this same SuSE/KDE works fine on a Dell desktop box). As you might gather, I have reached the point where I am open to suggestions of any kind :-) doug

Cable modem/lilo

The version of SUSE linux I was running seemed to give me a problem with DHCP. Ive yet to figure out what it is, and cable modems should be simple to setup. Anyways I installed mandrake 8.0 beta 3. The installation utility is great. I booted in the system for the first time and was able to use my modem. Thanx for the reccomendation. I was wondering if anyone can help me with lilo. When I boot my machine it only displays LI. I seem to remember this having to do something with the drive geometry. Any Ideas? I also installed grub which when I boot just displays GRUB. Need input re: developers tools

HI gang, I am starting to write up the last 1/3 of my presentation to the Delphi Developers group, and its the section on developer tools and utilities. I'd like some input from you folks as to what I should include in this section. Emacs - the original "IDE" (???) gdb for debugging (nicer with DDD front end, IMHO) make and Makefiles gcc What else do "real" Linux developers use? Maybe I'm suffering a brain cramp this evening, but your input will help. Also, are there any tools or compilers for Pascal? Remember, the Delphi folks understand Pascal, and I'm sure they will ask this question. (It has been 20 years since I programmed anything in Pascal...). Even with 64GB of RAM, no single process can see more than 4GB and the top 1GB of that is mapped as kernel space. Big memory means that you get to have lots of large virtual address spaces that can remain mapped in physical RAM. Nope, the new kernel will work with 64gb, you just have to go under "Processor type and features" and change the settings for High Memory Support. LRP 3.1.0. You need to browse the various kernel images at www.linuxrouter.org to find the one that most closely matches your environment. You'll probably want an image that has a pppoe (if you're using Verizon DSL), ipchains, DHCP, caching DNS, etc. You can download it along with the modules for your ethernet cards. Since this is a router, you'll need at least 2 ethernet cards; one for the "WAN" side (DSL connection) and one for your local (LAN) network. I use my LRP box as a gateway/router and a firewall (running ipchains). My Verizon DSL "modem" is connected to the LRP box via one of the ethernet cards and the other ethernet card in the LRP box is connected to a hub in my house. All of the PCs in the house are also connected to the hub. I configured a private class C ethernet network in my house and all the PC's have a 192.168.x.y address, including the LAN interface of the LRP box. The WAN side gets it IP address from Verizon via DHCP. These addresses get "spoofed" via IPMASQ to the outside world. The whole set-up works great. You can get other modules to load from the floppy, but remember everything has to fit on a floppy. One neat trick is the ability to format a floppy to hold more than 1.4 MB. I don't recall if it's the fdformat command or something else (I'm sure someone on this list can supply the details.....it's been a while, and I don't remember), but you can format a floppy so it will hold 1.6 MB (maybe more) and Linux has no trouble booting from it. The neat thing is that you can use an old "clunker" PC that you may have lying around for the LRP box. You don't even need a hard drive, and it's recommended that you DON'T use a hard drive (secruity reasons...remember this box is exposed to the outside world). I don't even have a monitor or keyboard connected to the LRP box. It just runs and runs and runs.... Step through the LRP configuration, write-protect the floppy, and you're in business.... Lexmark z52

I set it up according to how I think the documentation tells me to but my printer just gets a post script file, which it obviously doesn't understand. There's a great filtering set of procmail rules for this located at: http://www.impsec.org/email-tools/procmail-security.html As long as you have procmail installed and sendmail is configured to use procmail, just drop this stuff in place and you'll instantly start filtering stuff based on content and/or extension. There's a lot of configuration and customization you can do with this thing, and we've found that it works fantastic. We've intercepted the "AnnaKournikova" virus many, many times since it's initial release, and I can't even count the number of other virii I've seen trapped since we installed this. Filtering attachments via a Sendmail ruleset?

Hey Guys, Really simple question here... A while back I had asked whether sendmail could filter out mail based on a subject header , and found out that it could. Now I have a situation here at work where we want to filter out attachments, the obvious being .vbs, .exe, basically anything that may contain a virus. We don't run anti-virus software on the mail server that mail is being delivered to, nor on the sendmail relays feeding into it, since they are Solaris boxes and we currently don't have a unix version of Norton lying about. But I believe that we can filter out attachments through a sendmail ruleset, and I am wondering if this is the case. If so, can someone tell me how/where to do it please? Would be very appreciative for any help here! Thanks in advance! Dave

Volunteers needed!

HI gang, I have been asked to be the guest speaker at the Delphi Developers Group meeting in Newton, MA on Monday, April 23rd (http://www.discom.com/delphi) They are interested in Linux due to the recent product announcement of Borland Kylix (http://www.borland.com/kylix) These folks are a group of software developers living in the Windows world. I had planned to prepare a 45 - 60 minute talk, Q/A, and then demonstrate some apps for them, such as: StarOffice Netscape Developer tools and utilities VmWare LILO Desktops - KDE, Gnome, enlightenment, etc. Installation of Linux The above list was suggested to me by their representative as a list of things that would be interesting to their developers group. I am seeking 2 or 3 people would like to volunteer to demo some of these tools at the meeting, and who can provide support for the questions which I can't answer. I'm looking for folks with systems or laptops that they are willing to bring to this meeting for the demos. I would also appreciate a volunteer or two who would be willing to critique my presentation slides before the meeting. You would not need to actually attend the meeting. I'd e-mail the slides to you and request your written feedback. The Delphi group representative will also get a sneak preview. I've used AT&T Worldnet with great success - much faster than other dialups... yes, the big mega-ISP but with Linux loving employees who I've spoken with for server / network related issues... how Linux friendly is AT&T??? Firewalls

After spending many hours this past week trying to understand ipchains and firewalling in general I have come to the conclusion that I am spending a lot of time trying to recreate something that probably already exists. Does anyone have any experience with either open source or commercial firewalling products that can be configured to work in a small office network and allow VPN connections to larger networks. I do not have a very big budget but would be willing to pay for the appropriate solution. Mike

Startup issues

I have been playing with my network settings today and have made a change that has caused my system to be unable to read this file during boot up. Also any script that tries to read from it is unable to. Unfortunately I have no idea what I did to cause this. Problems

I have Slackware 7.1 running on a an AMD 133Mhz box with 32Megs RAM. This is my webserver, shell server, Ip MASQ box, and it locks up alot. It seems to lock up when I'm downloading on a box in my network behind it. I am runnign Kernel 2.4.0 on an ADSL line. I have had this problem with all kernel compiles I have done. I used to run FreeBSD, then OpenBSD on this box with no trouble. I did not, however, have ADSL then, so those boxes were just using a dial-up. I think IP MASQ is lockign the box up at some point. There are no messages in /var/log/messages, it just stops cold. My PPPOE client, when running top, never appears to use more than 10% of my CPU. I do not think the problem is in the pppoe client because the box does not seem to lock up when I'm downloading on it. (as in ssh'ing in and using lynx). Does anyone have any ideas on this? Orbitz

HI everyone, This is a friendly reminder: the next WLUG meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 14th at 7 PM in Kinnicutt Hall at WPI in Worcester, MA. Directions can be found on the WLUG website: http://www.wlug.org WLUG members Doug Waud, Stephen Daukas, and Chuck Anderson have been working together on the presentation for this meeting (at least that's the story I've been given). They will be discussing their experiences with home networking. Check out the WLUG website for a more detailed description of the focus of their talk. I expect that this will be a good meeting for someone who might not have setup a home network but is considering it. After the presentation, if time allows, we'll open the floor for a general question and answer session. At the conclusion of the meeting, a group of us will head over to the Boynton Restaurant for some pizza and beer. As always, the meeting and the post-meeting festivities are open to anybody who is interested in Linux.
