PC-BSD, FreeBSD, and iXsystems - anyone know about them?

I have pretensions of hacker status someday. ;-] They are selling a desktop with PC-BSD installed and configured. I'm thinking about buying their new Apollo rig, http://www.ixsystems.com/apollo and ask them to install some kind of virtual machine software on top of FreeBSD (or PC-BSD) so that I can learn various linux distros running as clients. Anyone know anything about them? Any thoughts or cautions about this approach? Thanks in advance for thoughts, reactions. PS - anyone programming Lisp, write me? Brian.McLinden(a)gmail.com

Virtual Machine Manager

Anyone familiar with virtual machine manager and kvm. I'm having some issues with a windows virtual machine. The system is Fedora 11 and the virtual machine is Windows 2008 Server. If I start the virtual machine from the virtual machine manager, it only has a single cpu despite my setting it to eight. If I start the machine from the command line, I can get four cpus but not eight. In both cases windows seem to display the eight cpus in the device manager (or whatever program it is). It has been suggest that windows was imaged on a four core machine before being loaded on the eight core machine and that something in windows is maxing at four cores. But that doesn't explain why the virtual machine manager can only start one cpu. I just played around on my home machine with a fedora 10 live cd and it recognized the two cores on that machine and used them from the virtual machine manager without problem. Also upped it to three cpus without problem.

(I did goof last week as you may recall announcing 7/13, but the plan remains: REALLY: 7/23 thursday. 6pm--9?whatever and it's perfectly OK to be late. no RSVP required. I'm ready for good or bad weather or both :) I've setup tunes (linux/soundblaster/mp3's) in my 2-car garage, with garage/protected space for picnic table and more. The BBQ grill needs moving, then everything will be together/nearby in the garage+driveway, or on the lawn if we are blessed with suddenly perfect weather.The aboveground pool is open too. VGA cables ; BBQ

doug> hi! packrat alert and BBQ teaser/feeler. 1) who has stashed VGA monitor cables (M/M, not extension) from dead monitors ? (from monitors whose cables are not molded on! ) I need a bunch for work... a remote to-be-shutdown-site simpleton packed up LCD monitors and shipped them to the mother ship withOUT cables. I have a semi-new job at EMC, the mother ship/flotilla in Hopkinton. True, I could buy 10 cables for maybe $20 on ebay. 2) Coming to the WLUG bbq next thursday 7/13 at my house in Boylston? (details later, perhaps by Andy). I'll be shopping for that soon, Soliciting ideas and "I'll be there" (or not) reply-to-me appreciated. (BYOB, bring your kids/dogs/SO's, the cheesy aboveground pool is working) Idea hunting: burgers,dogs(easy); sausages?(more challenging, what's a good brand/type that won't turn my grill into an inferno?). Healthy side dishes? (can't think of any at the moment. Maybe you'll bring something or suggest something easy). Chips: normal like Lays/Ruffles? exotic like Cape Cod? Salsa+cornchips? One of each, probably...I can be real cheap when it comes to things like chips. e.g. $3 for 8oz of hummus==toomuch! Oh well, "whiner off". I usually save big at PriceRite (in Worcester and many other locations), it's a very multicultural experience :) - doug and the dogs...
