Printing Photos - cropping in gimp 2.0

Hi All, Thanks for the input I recieved here, I've bought an Epson R300 color printer for making photos. Once I figured out that the debian package for libcupsys has the permissions borked for the files in /usr/lib/cups/backend so that they aren't executable, all is well. I've been happily browsing images in 'gqview', then loading them into gimp 2.0, then printing them. But I'm having issues with scaling images. I have to guess how/where to crop the images so that I can get the maximum amount of the picture onto the paper. It's a real pain, with lots of back and forth. Is there a tool out there, or a gimp plugin, which allows me to take a picture, select a paper size and gives me a template to crop/scale the image to fit that paper size nicely? Any hints on what tools/packages I should be looking at for this type of work? For example, I've got a picture of my nephew and son which I wanted to print out. I also wanted to zoom in a bit (or crop the image down to get closer to them) so that when it printed, I maximized the use of the 4x6 stock. A real pain in gimp 2.0, but since I'm just using the standard Debian install, maybe there is a plugin to help with this? Thanks, John

Heavy load app for linux

Anyone have a app that would put a heavy load on cpu and memory for burn in/testing for linux? I have one called "heavy load" for windows that pushes cpu/memory/disk drives as hard as they will go. We just had an odd server issue and HP replaced random parts till it went away. Before using it, i would like to run it through some tests. thanks mike

System hang woes continue

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI gang, I think I somehow built the computer from Hell. Recall my dual Opteron box with SuSE 9.2 and 1 GB of memory. I removed every SATA device from my system, and now it doesn't hang as often, but it still hangs periodically. This time I got 10 days of uptime before it hung - a new world's record on this particular box. Strangely enough, I could demonstrate more uptime with the "old" SATA code than with libata - go figure. I am suspicious of the 2.6 kernel. We run dual Opteron servers at work with the 2.4 kernel series with no problems at all (on RedHat 7.3). I am wondering what would happen if I took SuSE 9.2 and replaced the 2.6 kernel with a 2.4 kernel. Am I asking for a heap of trouble? What specific issues would I encounter? I'm guessing that the kernel modules would be all fubar since I thought taht 2.4 and 2.6 did that quite differently. Perhaps I could bypass that with a monolithic kernel. I'm not sure what other problems I'd make for myself if I did this. Another thought - does somebody have a .config file for a Linux 2.6 kernel on an Opteron system that works really well? Need help: palm -> laptop

Hi all, I need some help! I bought a USB to Serial/parrallel adaptor (IBM 22P5298). Fedora 4 seems to see it in /proc/bus/usb/devices but when I try to hotsync my palm, no connection results. 'yum info' told me that there is a more recent version for Fedora 3. 'yum upgrade' installed that more recent version. The problem seems to have disappeared. Ain't open source grande! I am embarrassed to admit that I do not know how to figure this out. I am having a problem with both mozilla-mail and evolution-mail mozilla-mail and evolution-mail both use the same process to "Attach file(s)". When I try to attach a file my Fedora Core 3 machine is toooo slow. It ties up the machine for minutes at a time. If I try to move the GUI is smears. "top" does not indicate lack of memory or lack of cpu cycles. I have not had any luck googling for others who have seen this before me. Do any of you WLUGers have a suggestion. My Fedora Core 4 works very quickly. Ken Jones

I managed to just set up automounting on my gentoo box, via some udev rules, HAL, D-BUS and a neat little app called ivman. Ivman will detect when new devices are plugged in and create a new entry in fstab if there isn't already an acceptable one (it'll remove the entry when the device is not connected); it can also be set up to do some more interesting things, such as integration to say start up your burning program when a blank CD-R is put in, etc. Using some udev rules (this is a great reference http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html) isn't *that* hard. You can use the program udevinfo to find out information about your plugged in devices to write appropriate rules. For example, I have a rule to link the device to a node /dev/nikon for my nikon camera, whenever it is plugged in. Then, I have an entry in /etc/fstab to mount /dev/nikon at /media/nikon, and lvman takes care of that (detects when that node is linked, reads fstab and mounts appropriately - if I didn't have that entry in fstab it would create one to mount at like /media/usbdevice01 or something). It even (usually) unmounts the device without issue (figuring out why it doesn't always). Since the serial number for each device is specific, my rule just uses that, so it looks like: SYSFS{serial}="SERIAL OF MY NIKON", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="nikon" to link node /dev/nikon to my camera. I had to use mknod to create that node initially (just a simply character device, I believe, can't remember the major/minor numbers off the top of my head). Of course you need to make sure you have hotplug installed and enabled in your kernel, as well as usb_storage and the SCSI modules (needed for the usb-storage module to work, according to kernel documentation). -- Carlton C. Disabling eth0 upon bootup

Hey all- I'm running ubuntu 5.10, and trying to understand how the linux bootup process works.. Right now upon bootup I'd like to change two things: Not ifup eth0 Configure wpa_supplicant to boot up with the right parameters in order to configure itself to the wireless network here. I think I figured out how to get the wpa_supplicant to work-- I just edited /etc/init.d/wpasupplicant and changed $OPTIONS to the arguments I need in order for it to work. For disabling eth0 on bootup, I could modify /etc/init.d/networking and change the command "ifup -a" to "ifup wlan0" to just boot up my wlan0 on bootup, but I feel there might be an easier way to do this... DELL 720 printer shared on SAMBA??

I've unsuccessfully googled this problem. Maybe you folks know a solution. My wife received a freebie DEL 720 printer. It is really a relabeled Lexmark z600 type. By downloading a driver from Lexmark, I got the printer running on my FEDORA 4 machine. I want to share this printer using SAMBA. After installing the same driver on my FEDORA 3 machine its CUPS sees the remote printer and "installs" it. When I ask to print a test page it announces that it had sent the page. Nothing happens on the FEDORA 3 machine to which the printer is attached. It's CUPS says that nothing is in the printer's queue. Any ideas? Ken Jones

If the Unix shell doesn't like it then try something else... Power Supply Needed

Hi all, Anyone have a Ilssan ISF 120SI compatible Power supply they'd be willing to sell me cheap? This is for an eMachines box that died in a lightning storm. It's for a couple with limited means and I just don't have any spares around the house at all. Specs for what I'm looking for: Input: 100-120VAC 3A Ouput: +3.3V +5V +12V -12V +%VSB 6A 14A 2A 0.3A 0.72A 120W It's a small power supply with a built in Fan that sticks out. I think there were 7 or 8 of us, with two newcomers (welcome!). The discussion started with GRUB and some of its more interesting features vs. LILO, such as command line editing and adding graphics to the background. I had made a GRUB bootable CD prior to the meeting. GRUB has a large number of features, and we touched on only a few. After that, we somehow ended up on the topic of VNC: http://www.realvnc.com http://www.tightvnc.com <-- There was also interest in the "suspend to disk" feature of my laptop, which actually worked in a live demo. One person asked if it was possible to do this on a desktop machine (I don't think so....). In addition, Mel K. I gave Mel my SuSE 9.3 pro CDs and asked him to give that a try. Mel said that he'd keep us apprised of his progress. SuSE Installation process.

Hello All, Does anyone have in-depth knowledge of the current SuSE install process? I want to get an install to exclude certain GIDs that we use in NIS when the install assigns GIDs to groups owned by packages. I found that I can assign the correct GID to an internal group in the autoyast XML file, but the package that uses that GID still gets a group assigned with that GID. Then result is duplicate GIDs in /etc/group. Ideally I would like to know how to get the installer to ignore certain GIDs. -Adam
