Hi all, Great to see you all in the last meeting :-) I was the skateboarder...who caught me almost falling shortly before I left? LOL ----------- Remote X [Insert name I've forgotten here (sorry!)] mentioned that their users connect to a remote session's root desktop (or whatever you call the initial/primary display :0 deal that you initially/locally get). I would like to do this as well. SSH with port forwarding is probably my preference, but wireguard would be OK as well. I don't think I want to directly expose anything like xrdp. Anyway - could you please refresh my memory as to what was being used? I'm running i3 in this case (started via lightdm). I generally have not loved using VNC-based tools, but if that's what is currently recommended, I guess I'll give it another go. ------------ SSHFS Optimization Also - I referred to using sshfs internally for myself to my NAS, and some optimizations for it. This is my current alias to mount it: sshfs -o cache=yes -o kernel_cache -o Ciphers=aes128-ctr -o Compression=no -o ServerAliveCountMax=3 -o ServerAliveInterval=15 -o reconnect -C -o idmap=user server: /mymountpoint I got a few of the recommended switches from this article that finally convinced me to just forget about NFS: https://blog.ja-ke.tech/2019/08/27/nas-performance-sshfs-nfs-smb.html Thanks! Mojotron: Robot Wars

Mojotron is a twin stick shooter similar to Robotron: 2084 or Llamatron. I've been redoing the graphics and fixing up the game. I decided to make a trailer to promote the game. As the web changes and the technologies underpinning complex websites grow and evolve, managing all this by hand becomes nearly impossible. Load balancers, database servers.. What happens when your favorite cloud company whose data center is just a bunch of shipping containers burns to the ground? How easily could you reconstitute your website and all the underpinnings? Althea is going to speak to how they deploy their website and manages the entire process as code. I'd like to thank Chuck for facilitating getting Althea in contact with us. Simple IP KVM

Has anyone used or built one of these? https://github.com/pikvm/pikvm/ It looks really interesting way to get a reasonably cheap IP KVM for home use. Though with the pain of getting RPi4s these days... it's going to take me a while to actually build one. Not sure if I wnat to spend $160 for the HAT though... the slightly flaky USB dongle so I can see my home server screen when needed it's probably more than enough. John

Free Dell PowerSwitch 5324

Guys, I've got a free Dell PowerSwitch 5324, it's 24 1gb ports and I replaced the loud fans with some quieter ones, but now the fan error light is always on. Is anyone interested in this? It works great, it's just old and I wanted to move to all TP-Link at home to manage it all with Omada. Sorta good idea... Fiber internet options in Worcester

Hey all, My wife and I have been on the market for a home, and we feel that Worcester would be a great city for us to move to. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Worcester has much if any options for fiber internet which is important for both of us working from home. The fastest provider appears to be Spectrum, and I've heard only bad things about them. Last I heard, Worcester has been held down by a monopoly from Spectrum, and I don't know if the city government has been working to change this with municipal fiber or trying to get other ISPs in the area to improve competition. It seems like the kind of issue that network engineers from WPI could assist with. Anyone have more information on this? - Josh

They're looking to hire a mechanical engineer where I work, and talking about how a lot of the best candidates have been from WPI. That got me thinking about one guy who'd been at several meetings, and graduated maybe 2 years ago, though I don't think he was an engineering major. He had a legendary appetite and I think he moved to Nashua. I'm pretty sure his name had 2 syllables and started with 'S'. I keep thinking "Salman", but I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Hey Gang, I'd like to start by apologizing. There's been some illness and other stuff going on and I've focused a bit less on WLUG than I'd like. Thankfully things are getting sorted out at my end and I will be focusing much more on WLUG. Tonight the meeting is going to be online. With the late announcement combined with only myself and John in person, it makes more sense to just have it online for this month. I plan on reaching out to the WPI people and seeing about doing in person meetings there for August hopefully. I'd also like to have a WLUG bbq at some point as well.
