Yes, and I have a couple of thoughts on that. 1) I believe this is the first time a recruiter has done this, but I could be wrong. 2) We as a group have every right to determine what is acceptable email on the list. In my opinion, if any group member abuses the list, they should be first asked to stop and then have their privileges revoked if they continue to abuse the list. The post did mention Linux, it did have "JOB" in the subject, however, the recruiter did not ask permission to use our list. Is that sufficient cause for immediate revocation from the list? Perhaps so, perhaps not - you tell me. I don't recall anybody asking this particular recruiter to stop doing what he did. We should revoke with care. If done harshly, it could damage the group reputation. 3) I opened the topic for discussion because I want to be sure that folks who are normally less vocal on the group mailing list have a chance to air their opinions. 4) The end result of these discussions should be posted on the website as a group policy so guests to our mailing list will understand what we expect of them. Recommendation for Project Management freeware?

Morning all! Before I download a few bazillian freeware apps to look at, I was wondering if anyone has experience with and a recommendation for a freeware alternative to MS Project? I would like both Gantt and PERT with critical path and milestones... This is primarily for keeping track of the flow and status of a bunch of projects (where are we, what comes next, what is holding up the works, etc.), and for tasks within a project. Drill down from a multiple project view (PERT) to a single project, to tasks with a project (Gantt) would be very cool, especially given senior management is visually oriented. ;-) Alternatives to "project management" apps based on the above are welcome (I'm not sure where the process automation/workflow tools business is these days, but if you have something you like, let me know...). Being able to generate web-based content would be brilliant! Then I could say "go to this URL and click away!" Thanks in advance! Steve

Ubuntu switch user & screen lock

I'm running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I've recently used the "switch user" option to log in without logging my son out. However, after logging out of my account, the screen is locked for my son, and his login password will not unlock the screen. Anyone else seen this? TiA, Bill

My $0.02... I think the mailing list should be like the meetings - if someone at a meeting says "hey, $COMPANY has this opening doing Linux sysadmin/programming/etc.", great. But if some random recruiter walks into the room without any introductions and starts blabbing about jobs and how great his company is, I imagine they'd be told where to go. In any case (and to kick a dead horse from a few months ago), I think all job postings should be open to satire. My thoughts on the whole incident revolve around the fact that more than anything else, WLUG - including the mailing list - is a community explicitly defined as a place where linux enthusiasts can get together. The whole topic of job postings is already a little bit of a grey area, but so far they'd all been either posted directly by people in WLUG, or sent to Andy and relayed to the list. This has worked at least well enough that nobody complained. In this case, however, things went differently. The user quite obviously went through the trouble of signing up for the mailing list with the sole purpose of being able to send an email that was part job posting and part recruiter advertisement. This, in my mind (and quite a few others, based on the responses) crossed over the line. There are plenty of well established sites online for employers and employees to look for each other, and I doubt that anyone in this group would have any trouble finding them. So far it hasn't been an issue, but I would hate to see the signal in the mailing list get diluted with the noise of recruiters. If this comes up much more, I 'd vote for either relegating job postings to a dedicated page on the web site, or just banning them alltogether, depending on how the rest of the group feels. I don't feel there's a need to ban job postings altogether. Andy's method seems more than reasonable, though I'd suggest that ANY such posting get the go-ahead from Andy or Frank regardless of the poster's tenure here. I can't think of a reason why such a requirement would be objectionable to anyone. Screen goes blank with ubuntu and geforce 8800 GTS.

I have system I just put together with a PCI-Express Geforce 8800 GTS running ubuntu 7.04. During installation of Ubuntu everything showed up fine on screen. After installation, I ran into the problem that right after grub starts loading linux, the screen goes blank (monitor light turns from green to amber) and stays that way right up until X loads, at which point I get video. This hasn't been a problem so far, but I just installed some updates and it seems like now X isn't loading or I'm getting some sort of message before X loads, because it turns on and just stays blank the whole time. It seems like it would be easy if I just put a different video card into the system, but I don't even have another PCI express video card. I also don't have any PCI video cards anymore. All I have are AGP cards and the system doesn't have an AGP slot. So, it looks like taking the hard drive out and moving it to another system is the only option. Any thoughts on why the screen is doing that would be appreciated. The monitor doesn't seem to be getting no signal, because normally it brings up a message saying no signal rather than just blanking. It seems more like it's gone into a power saving mode. We have a client looking for Unix File Systems long-term consulting help. This work can be done remotely with occasional visits to client site out of state. Details are as follows: Project Description: This is a need for a Sr. File Systems Engineer to work remotely via a virtual office, There is potential for a client visit every 6-8 weeks. This is a very strategic and high visibility project with a large end-client. Optical based storage, OSD project. This resource will be part of the core program that is in charge of fully designing a file system for work in conjunction with an OSD driver. There are around 5 people on the project - 2 SCSI engineers/1 file systems engineer/1 embedded engineer. They are in the architecture phase right now. I had a really bad experience trying to buy a 1U server from a vendor I saw in Linux Journal, thinking I'd support a "linux-friendly" company. Well, after they charged my CC, it took them 3 *weeks* to start the system burn-in, the system *failed* burn-in, they said it would take at least another week... so I finally told them to screw off and got my money back. I ended up buying a dirt-cheap 1U Celeron (Cybertron) from TigerDirect, which I colo'd with a Level3 reseller in Cambridge. Its been humming along for 2 years so far. Seeking Linux help for area non-profit - compensation potential

Boylston's public cable access channel (WBAC) is seeking to expand its services and offer Video on Demand and video file upload and download services for its staff and eventually the community. They currently have their web site and email hosted with an ISP and they are happy with that, but the ISP cannot provide them with these new services. They are looking for help in installing and configuring a linux box off their private LAN for this purpose. They also need other general help with their setup including configuring and troubleshooting VPN connections via their netgear VPN/firewall, etc. These folks are sort of windows literate, and they recognize that Linux will provide them with the most secure and cost-effective solution to meet their growing needs at this time. Ideally, they are seeking Boylston residents, but they are willing to bring in help from outside their community. They are also able to reasonably compensate for the above mentioned services and/or barter for access to their fine production equipment. If you are intersted in learning more about video and television production, this may be well worth your effort. What I don't have (or can't yank out of the lab here at work) COULD USE....dont really NEED: ....an APC UPS with the more modern USB port....reasonably small. (the SW supports serial/"COM1" cable/interface, or USB/HID... I'm very weak on the HID stuff, but it probably just works.) So this lure is to see who does have apc w/usb... and wants to try-and-or-demo this. and When's the june meeting ? (I forget what month the party is.)
