Free hardware: Internal IDE CD drives

Could anyone use some internal CD drives? Just found a box full of them. They are "bare" IDE CD readers with no cables, drivers or manuals. Will gladly bring as many as people want to the next meeting. Don't be shy, I probably have 30 of them, and all are guaranteed to be worth every penny of free! Monitoring for a network

I'm trying to get a better handle on what's happening on my network at work. I'm currently using Nagios to monitor the big things (Server health, switch health, etc), but I'd like more granular statistics (how much data is coming and going, are any links saturated, etc). A quick glance shows that MRTG, Cricket, and RRD are good things to start playing with. I'm staring to play around with MRTG, but I'm hearing rumors of scalability issues and I don't want to get deep into MRTG if I should be putting resources elsewhere. A quick sketch of the network is a few internet connections, our router, and a few switches for networking along with a few switches for VoIP as well as our PBX. I don't want to monitor every port all the time, I instead want to monitor the uplinks of the switches to have a good idea, and look at the switch if something looks awry. My question to the group is, what do you use / recommend, and do you have anything that sticks out in your head about any of these packages (good or bad)? Thanks in advance, -- Eric Martin

Possible problem with demo tomorrow...

There's that old adage, when it rains it pours... Work critical stuff has made it hard for me to focus on getting the demo to work completely. I can do two things... 1. I can do my presentation without the demo. 2. I can do my presentation next month, giving me time to get the demo working right, etc. What do you guys want me to do? I think I missed the earlier discussion, but how exactly do you know this is hardware at fault (vs anything not hardware at fault) and how certain are you? Have you tried running a "bootable operating system" via a CD or DVD drive as a diagnostic step (will it boot Ubuntu or another from the optical drive)? If CD/DVD boot is out, there are thumb drive bootable images also. I would start here and rule out everything that is not hardware. As a test, if a different O.S. than Ubuntu 11.10, runs well (except slower) from an optical drive, your hardware is likely fine (and instead have an Ubuntu 11 or app or driver problem). Step only takes a few minutes and is very telling (and well worth it IMHO). This step will likely tell you if it is hardware vs everything else. So if you can assure yourself it is hardware 100% ... All the PC hardware I have worked on in the past years is pretty much self diagnosing/reporting. In this case, your job if you choose to accept it, is to "read and decipher what the motherboard is telling you at boot up". To speak the language of your motherboard, you need to check for any of the following information: External to case, Rear facing LEDs (often have many and are multi-colored) On motherboard LEDs, viewable only inside Beep tones heard at boot up Error or other messages displayed quickly at bootup You need to read the "diagnostics" page of your model's specific PC or motherboard vendor's manual for this specific PC/motherboard to decipher what it is seeing at bootup (based upon lights/beeps/LEDS/etc). Sounds like: You either have two bad power supplies, or this is not the problem. You could have bad memory DIMM(s) that do pass MemTest86 (these test help, but I have seen them pass on bad chips it is a bit of a long shot though). You have changed the motherboard battery and flashed the latest BIOS. Don't rule out a new BIOS being a problem (glitch in install or wrong one or BIOS version problem) You still have a problem that could be hardware or not. You could have an Ubuntu 11 playing well with your motherboard, thus a test of another OS and version... If it was my PC I would next rule out the following in this order: Test and work on whatever the motherboard manufacturer is telling you via lights/beeps/LEDs/boot messages. Ubuntu V11.10, not because I don't like it but trying something else for 15 minutes could tell you something. The current version of CMOS you flashed to the motherboard

Hi Brett, First off, CMOS checksum errors during boot refer to MEMORY not the BIOS. Also almost all your symptoms point to a possible memory issue. Do Chuck's stuff to verify that you don't have a power drain that's causing a memory issue. Get a Memory Test utility and find out which DIMM is causing the problem. Carefully remove the DIMM and using a #2 pencil eraser, clean the contacts and replace the DIMM (The rubber removes oxidation that prevents contact) and don't forget to keep grounded! (You, not the DIMM). Test needed on declared-ill Modem. Who has a lab?

Umm. Non-happy camper. ISP things have changed here, without me being informed. Recently (2 days ago) my modem started rebooting every little while. Zillions of T3 & T4 timouts in the modem log, Signal lavels were perfect when it was online. I own this thing, a Motorola SB6120 purchased late June 2010. It has not been abused. I am in Woosta & we all know the ISP available here. 2 techs showed up mid-morning, to diagnose and fix this issue. One guy stood there watching; the other guy "did stuff." They checked the signal levels on incoming line from the box connected to the pole our back, and declared my moden Dying. They talked to each other (not me) & seemed to think I was Granny-in-a-Box, until they let me say more than one sentence. These guys also confessed that since July 202, Ch4rter does not "allow" customers to own/run their own modems. Their consolation prize is that they don't charge modem rental fees any more. (it's not on the bill, anyway, FWIW). They mumbled some other mumbo jumbo and fled 5 seconds after they learned I have my own router too, & didn't care if the modem and router were yet in communication. They just said "better reboot" and they "no longer" service "wireless" --which I am not running except when certain visitors appear. I think they meant they don't diagnose routers, which has always been the policy, and which is fine. Internal LAN issues aren't their problem. So now I have a modem which may or may not be sick, but no way to test it to make sure. Is there anyone here who can take a look at this thing & test to see if it's Really Dying, or if Ch4rter deaded it with their latest firmware revision of their firmware & policy change in July 2012? An interesting meeting theme sometime might be how to get the Verizon FIOS in Worcester. Several years ago I watched Verizon trucks & Verizon moles installing their fiber optics in manholes all over town. Ch4rter is running on Verizon's infrastructure. Ch4rter internet has been working better since then, but we're still locked out of the option to use verizon. Is this a topic of interest to anyone? If so, I'll lead the discussion and even buy the Pizz4. To me, this is a Large Pizza problem. Another interesting but probably futile discussion might center around why we have suddenly been deprived of the ability to watch the behavior and effectiveness of our modems, which serve internet coming from our ISP.. I was not informed of this -- was anyone who is just a 'regular' customer? Meanwhile, if anyone has a test lab or whatever, where they can test my declared-dead modem, please let me know. Need recommendation on UPs for small home network.

Today and the other day we discussed my issues with a modem declared-dead by twin techs from my ISP. Part of that problem may have been caused by bad elex service here. I need a recommendation for a UPS to use here. We have dirty elex here in this 112 year-old central Worcester house, & inadequate amperage to my floor (top floor garret). Refrig runs on same circuit as my computers do. Lights dim when something downstairs also turns on, probably a microwave oven and/or a TV. This won't be fixed any time soon unless the landlady suddenly becomes a benefactress of the Gate$ Foundation, which will never happen. I could sometime get an electrician in here to add a suitable circuit for my floor, but it would be faster & better just to get an UPS, whether or not the elex here is ever upgraded. UPS here would only need to run max 2 PCs plus their monitors, one modem and router & a light bulb or two. Really needs to run only one. The primary PC here is mine, which has a 450W power supply running a 95W AMD FX4100 quad (bulldozer) no vid card. Antec Sonata II case has 2 fans. Mobo is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157292 Built June 2012. Works great. The other PC is a few years older; similar, but usually don't care if it shuts down in power outage or not. I need UPS to beep audibly in a power outage, but only need maybe 5 minutes to light a candle, go to office, save whatever is not saved & Halt. Otherwise just need UPS to smooth out the fluctuating elex here. I'm not clear from newegg or any vendor, which kind of UPS I need to get for this small home setup. Please would someone recommend what UPS would be suitable here, but not overkill. Thanks extremely, Liz J

Thanks, Karl. This makes sense. Why didn't I think of that! We have inadequate elex here which dips & dims lights frequently. Had sudden power outages a few times, including one very recently. I am not piping the modem logs anywhere; only check this if I notice an obvious problem. Results: Non available. Case (Motorola SB 6120) has only 2 screws, hex, 2 different sizes. No problem. Backplate then comes off & that's it. Nothing else to undo except whet seem to be clips, but we have no prybar tiny & thin enough to pry up these clip things. Case appears uncrackable, execpt maybe by dropping it from an airplane onto solid concrete. However. If it's only the power supply, I could test this by simply replacing the wall wart with an equivalent one from anywhere. Then I'd have to get the ISP to reprovision it, then watch to see if it worked any better after that. I do have an update from Ch4rter business office, which is relevant to my original beef with this ISP. Yesterday afternoon, I followed up by calling the business office, to ask why they changed their policy on what networking components their customers can or cannot own and administer themselves. The last person I spoke with said I am "grandfathered-in" to be allowed to own & run my own modem, since my account was opened before July, 2012 when the new poilcy was instituted (I'm a customer since there was something other than dial-up). Biz office says these techs who came to see me Thursday simply had "inadequate training" or "incorrect information" from their own supervisors. Both techs did look not older than about 3 days over 19. For the trouble call, I was promised a sup-tech & maybe one of these was, but only sup-ing the second guy how to open cardboard boxes of modems, smile at geekly grannies, & maybe how to drive the van. This modem is not in warranty & no longer manufactured (mine 2+ years old). But Motorola tech support confirmed that any old power supply 12V, 0.76A would run it. I'll borrow a power supply from somewhere, then try this thing one more time here before Responsibly Disposing of it by donating to a worthy friend's parts bin. Sounds more like the power supply is taking it's time to die. As the power level dips thats where your errors/reboots are popping up. Easiest thing to verify is 1.) Turn off the modem and unplug. 2.) Remove case and inspect the board. 3.) If the board's solder connections look like there are not good connections ANYWHERE on the board then you probably have a bad solder issue, if the solder looks good, it's probably a power supply on the board problem which is a chip. 4.) Help with water level problems

Hey all, I had a close call with my hot water heater this afternoon. I heard on odd noise in the pipes and it turned out that my hot water heater was dumping water out of the overflow valve. Luckily, I found it quick enough, and I'm pretty sure I got it handled for < $150. There's a 1 Gal bucket under the overflow valve, and if I had a water level detector emailing me that water is in the bucket, I could have caught this earlier. I was looking at buying an Arduino and setting up a simple circuit. I know a few people have played with Arduinos, any suggestions on which one to get and how to go about it? I don't need to know how much water is in the bucket, I was thinking about a float type device or even two wires that trip a relay. I just want a heads up that water is in the bucket so I can stop before my basement floods. Thanks in advance, -- Eric Martin

A question about KMS API's

Anyone know anything about the KMS API? From userland? I'm working on a project and would like to use KMS/FB directly, as at boot there will be no binaries available except ours, No libc even. Just a few static binaries. if anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated it. I can't seem to find anything on it on google, and I really don't have the time to go pouring over the kernel source.

Hi Chuck, It doesn't have to be 2 HDMI compatible outputs. It just came to me that the Pi has a composite video and a stereo audio out port too. One of each would be super as I have power supplies, keyboards and mice for both my Pi's. The four OS's (which might be overkill for time) that I plan to bring for the demo are Raspian (a Debian distro that is running a web server), Gentoo, Fedora and OpenELEC (an XBMC type distro). Also if possible Ethernet access? Yep, still up for it. Is there a way to connect two HDMI sources up to projector/tv/video in the room? Reason I have two Pi's and I thought after the talk can have two running for demo purposes. BBQ interest survey: aug14/aug15 ?

Sum sum summatime.... ...and it's crunch time, do-or-die for our annual summer WLUG bbq. I'm looking at hosting ..... REAL SOON, e.g. tues/wed aug14/15, now that I see the weather (tuesday looking like the best sunny day next week). My rough location: boylston (near berlin+Clinton, 10min from 495/hudson, 20min or less from worcester via 290 east...) Timing: loose....6-8pm or later; Challenges: my grill is half-gone (2 of 4 burners work OK) and my motivation depends on some feedback. Reply to me ..........whether you'd (want to)(be able to) attend with or w/o SO's,pets,kids,anyone! Usually I provide beef/sausages/buns/etc, a few soda choices, and leave the rest to fate or better. Howdy all, I would like to give a talk on the Raspberry Pi project and I have two of them to demonstrate various OS's (I have worked with the Debian and Fedora implementations and look forward to the others as they come out.). Cross-compiling for Windows

I cross compile a program for windows on my linux box. After doing so I grab all the dlls and package them up. Typically this involves grabbing what I knew was needed and then testing on a windows box to determine if anything is missing. Is their some program in wine that can output what dlls are needed (like ldd) so I can write a script to package up everything? Obviously it doesn't generally change except when I upgrade to a new Fedora version but it would be nice to automate packaging everything. Dennis Payne dulsi(a)identicalsoftware.com

x86 Android VM

Has anyone played with the x86 android images? I've tried running it under kvm but can't seem to get networking to work. I tried 4.0 rc1 a while ago. Looks like I may have found my answers on the release notes. It says ethernet doesn't work. Looks like 2.2 is the last version with working ethernet. That's disappointing.
