I've been exploring HTML5 3D scene rendering. It appears to make good use of gpgpu acceleration. My first use of it is up on github: https://github.com/jlettvin/cubeHTML5 (repository) https://cdn.rawgit.com/jlettvin/cubeHTML5/master/cube.html (result) Additional layered technologies make excellent use. WebGL and Three.js are amongst the more mature. http://threejs.org/ http://stemkoski.github.io/Three.js/ http://threejs.org/examples/ http://threejs.org/examples/#webgl_custom_attributes_points3 The speed of development and resulting performance is orders of magnitude better than historical methods. I am no expert, but it is a remarkable technology. I intend to use it to develop and make dynamic presentations. It is not specific to Linux, but it is supported there. Is it worth using a wlug session on this subject? Just a self-serving thought. We actually haven't done a round table in a while. David, I like your idea for the home automation / vision processing as well. I just went looking and there are 10+ companies that make linux based home automation products. I've messed with the the opencv stuff and my co worker is using it read his water meter and do OCR. Keith, it would be cool to have someone (other than me) talk about managing large amounts of data. Drop a line to your friend and see if they'd be willing to do a talk. I talked a bit about hadoop as well since I've been working with that. I could with some prep give a talk about hadoop if people were interested. I've also been playing with the parallel python stuff as well. My plan is to send out a reminder that the meeting is going to be next Thursday. It's a bit too soon to get anything put together on either of these topics, but we should talk them through next Thursday and see if anybody has more ideas as well. Thanks, Tim. At 8 my son can solo follow plans and build a FM radio receiver that works. Lightbot - program logic thinking for young kids. Hey Gang, Sorry for the late notice... Kids, school, etc. Firstly, we will be meeting in Rm. 203 Stratton Hall: http://maps.wpi.edu/map/?id=609#!ce/6603,11184?ct/11184?m/105250 Speaking of which, our topic is going to be about STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) oriented educational things that are built with or work on linux. Basically I see this as a round table for people to talk about some of the cool stuff that's out there for kids these days. I've got scratch loaded on my machine so I can give a demo of that. I've also got Alice and google blocks as well. I'll also bring along my copy of snap circuits. This is an open venue. Feel free to do some research and find something cool. Like always, there will be refreshments provided and we'll convene at Tech Pizza afterwards to continue to banter. Hi, I think kids STEM is a great meeting idea. I would be glad to bring a Snap Circuits and a demo. Probably 5-10 minutes. As father of 8 year old, would gladly listen on other topics (programming, robotics, arduino, etc.). Thank you, Joel

How about another BBQ, since I missed the last one, LOL! (J/K) The topic of 'kids-oriented programming, circuits and robotics' sounds good to me. ;-) Somewhere in my house I have an old R/C tank that my Dad gave to my son when he was 5. And then when he was just 6 years old, my Dad passed, so the tank became even more valueable to Joe. But somewhere along the line, it died (electronically, probably due to Joe playing with it in the snow, LOL!), so I started to convert it to use an Arduino to control it, and intended to intended to use Bluetooth modules to communicate between the Arduino controlling the motors and the Arduino reading the controls on the remote. But, alas, like many of the projects that I start, I got side-tracked by life and never got back to it... But I could probably find it and 'ressurect' the project in time for the meeting and do a little 'show-and-tell' about it.
