If people are interested I can speak about hadoop and what's gone into building the clusters and some of the hardware and management challenges I've dealt with. Peter Pouliot, who is the MS guy working on getting Hyper-V support back into OpenStack, spoke at last year's PuppetConf in Boston, and said that *nix stacks will likely come back into MS products so MS can play with the likes of OpenStack and similar opensource tools making their way into devOps, EntOps, cloud apps and big data. Windows NT/XP/7/8 had the POSIX subsystem and then the Interix subsystem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interix But they deprecated it in Windows 8 and don't support it at all on Windows 10. As one of my co-workers pointed out... the MS file model is fundamentally incompatible with the linux model. Try renaming a file in windows that someone else has open... try deleting a file someone has open. There are lots and lots of linux programs that do that last trick... create a temp file, open it and then delete it... use it for scratch space and then when they close it... *poof* it's gone. Interesting but I don't see much point. Yes it may be technically interesting but from an end user perspective why use this over cygwin. I imagine any graphical application won't work. If they did make it support SDL, gtk, etc., I'd be interested. Granted on a new machine I might install it instead of cygwin if it was easier to install. Well, this will make backing up my wife's machine a bit easier now that it'll be running sshd. Yeah, I should know better. I was beat up and frustrated at the time. Sorry. The root of my problem was that I couldn't find any options in the BIOS to manipulate the Secure Boot/UEFI/Legacy stuff. However, I found them this morning after I selected an option that I assumed to be unrelated which unlocked them. Thank you, Gigabyte. So I'm making progress now but I'm still not out of the woods yet. I've got Windows installed with space partitioned for LM but now I'm working on getting the installer to recognize the Windows partition. It thinks I have the entire disk available. Damn. You have turned off secure boot, right? Which OS is working right now? Can you run grub manually from the UEFI prompt? Can you get to the UEFI prompt? Are you trying to install Windows second after a successful Linux install? Have you considered picking one OS, then running the other in a virtual machine? I assume you can do the same with Windows 10 as well, right? So did you install Win10 first, then shrink it and install the new bootloader to let you choose between Win10 and Mint? I used to build PCs for myself, family and friends as a side hobby many moons back but as it became more of a headache I fell out of it for the most part. But recently I decided to replace the PC I have had since 2007 even though it was working fine for my needs. I really wanted an SSD drive, USB 3.0 and less power consumption. So all the headaches immediately returned and I remembered why I don't like to build these any more. I was able to get the hardware issues I encountered resolved, but them I was hit with the UEFI problem when trying to install and dual-boot Windows 10 and Linux Mint. I'm finding lots of help pages but none have worked for me. Maybe because I have a newer MB (Gigabyte GA-Z170MX with an Intel I5 6400). So I wonder without burdening anyone for specific instructions, can anyone provide any general thoughts or guidelines regarding UEFI, Windows 10 and Linux? I'm thinking it might be impossible to dual-boot with my setup but I hope not. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- Gary

You're thinking of lsyncd: https://github.com/axkibe/lsyncd It's essentially a daemon that watches one or more directories via inotify, and fires of incremental rsync processes whenever it sees writes go by (though you can specify filters rather than a simple bit for bit copy). Block-level remote file sync?

Hi all, I recall someone giving a lightning talk on this quite a while ago (Chuck I think, about 2 years ago!). I was hoping to set up a simple backup solution with my son. He'd replicate his data to my system, mine to his. Now, the interesting part, was I think that the replication method someone used was a lazy write to the backup location with a folder watching process or something. I don't think I want to set up DRBD for this, but I would like an efficient backup operation (e.g. would be nice to be able to efficiently backup written chunks of a file with an EFS system on it). Late to the party. Been that kind of busy week Replaced 36 inch tube with a 55 inch LCD around 4 years ago. Bought the best TV to match the imperfect eyeballs in our home. It's personal what we all see and how well. We went with Samsung UN55D7000. Amazon shipped new was best deal around then. Would do it again (that model and via Amazon). LCD gets fed signals by: Charter Cable Box with DVR Have extra info on DVR tricks via ESata if others have this setup. Samsung blu ray player about 4 years old (no WIFI, no apps) mostly used for redbox rentals. Denon AVR 2112ci receiver & speakers key here is HDMI and "ARC" so TV & receiver share volume and inputs. It is a video source too ksetup & stations) Recently OSMC distro to play KODI on a Raspberry Pi 3 - excellent for video unsure if it works for me with music (mp3 and streaming). Older Roku 2 (likely go to OSMC or Roku 4 soon) used for Intertube streaming of Netflix / Showtime /HBO / etc. It still works but now is *wonky* and needs power reboots every other day.
