I 2nd or 3rd VNC, you should also check out rnetwork. It allows a linux box to control a window$ box via micro$ith terminal services. I use it here at work and have had great luck with it. Linux for DEC Alpha 400 4/233 ??

I remember from one of the more recent WLUGs that some information about Linux on Alpha was presented. I was at the Mass Academy for Math & Science yesterday, and they have several DEC Alpha 400 4/233 machines and they asked me if there was a Linux that might run on them. Not being a DEC kind of guy, I couldn't answer... Anyone care to offer some information regarding this? Thanks in advance! Steve

Since we were just on the subject of hardware, I was wondering if anyone had any PC133 memory that they wanted to part with. I have a new box that's half built and would like 256MB, but I'd settle for 64 just to get it going. I'm stalling on the memory, hoping the price will come back down. I think Red Hat and Mandrake both provide distributions for Alpha. I'm sure there are others too since Linus used an Alpha as a target during kernel 2.0 development. Robert N. ssh/virtual terminal "challenge"

I have a situation where I'd like to run ssh from a script to connect to a different machine. In some cases, the machine's IP will have changed, due to DHCP. Is there a way I can either: 1. make ssh accept the new site without supplying the "yes" from the keyboard. or 2. Somehow set up a controlling terminal or virtual terminal to provide the "yes" that ssh requires? I have not been able to get something like "openvt" to work. I have no experience with these things. I don't want to spring the $$ because most of 4.1 is for mobile connectivity and I don't care about that. 3.5.3 has all the stuff I want, but it is no longer available from Palm's website... I updated a lot of stuff, including anything that had to do with printing, and I still can't print. I'm wondering if the virus scanner I put on the PC could be the problem -- I've disabled it (as much as I can) but I'm suspicious. Searching for motherboards (was trading PIII)

I'm broadening the search a bit, and was wondering if anyone can recommend some local hardware shops... By way of repeating my situation, and giving a bit more detail, I have a SECC2 (a.k.a. slot 1) PIII 850 processor that won't run on my motherboard (an Intel SE440BX-2 Slot 1 type) because of motherboard rev issues. I am offering a swap for a SECC2 PIII running at 550 or 600. I am also now looking to see if anyone knows of a local source for a motherboard capable of running a Slot 1 PIIIs at 850. This is older technology (Intel no longer make Slot 1), so I need to see what I can find that is already in the distribution channel. I really like Intel boards, so Intel would be my first choice. Anyone know of a local source, Intel or otherwise? Thanks! Steve

So here is the sad and embarrassing story... It began at Christmastime when my father-in-law decided to give me two CPU upgrades and a bunch of memory. To make a very long and sad story shorter, the PIII 850 MHz CPU I got is not compatible with my motherboard (an Intel SE2, specifically 720-series). So, I have a PIII 850 I can't use and was wondering if anyone would like to swap a PIII 550 or 600 MHz for the PIII 850. Yes, you read correctly, I am willing to trade down! Charter & servers?

Does anyone have any experience with Charter cable checking up on services? I have a couple of ssh holes in my firewall, which has not caused any trouble. Now, I'm considering hosting a very low bandwidth web site, but I'm concerned about Charter doing some port scanning and deciding that I'm doing something wrong. More detail... I'm involved with planning a summer camp for the Boy Scouts, and I think that bugzilla would be a great way to help track the myriad of tasks with the multiple volunteers. I'd probably set it up for SSL only. As an alternative, I could just set the few users up with ssh access & teach them how to set up port forwarding, but some of these guys have only MS experience. (Does the windows ssh support port forwarding?) Opinions? TIA, Bill

(off topic) high speed internet access in shrewsbury

Hi, I apologize for my slightly off topic question. But I need help on this subject. I want to have high speed internet access that I can use with linux without any problems. I mean I don't want to use PPPoE, if possible. I live in Shrewsbury. Unfortunately verizon can not afford 'dsl'izing our telephone line. (strange that my next door qualifies for DSL while we can not) I am thinking of switching my local phone line provider, perhaps another company may provide DSL on my telephone line? Am I correct? Or if verizon cannot do it, none of them can do it? Speaking about the cable choice, 'townisp' of Shrewsbury charges $50 for a month of access with a speed limit of 25-30 KB/sec and a setup charge of $99. and also a download limit of 2GB a month which is a real drawback if you like to test new distributions like myself. I do not think that their offer is attractive, am I wrong? Anyways..., being new in the US I need recommendations on which way to go for high speed internet access. I hope there are some people on this list living in Shrewsbury and do have high speed internet access despite Verizon Company. :) Thank you very much, baris

Situation: Friend wants an MP3 server for his home network to play his large CD collection. I've been trying out edna (http://edna.sourceforge.net/) to serve/stream MP3s and its a nice simple and satisfactory solution. Works well in that it is basically a webserver that is accessible from any computer on the network. Does multiple streams as well. Problem: Is there an automated way in Linux to place an audio CD-ROM into the tray and have it rip into 256k "CD-quality" MP3s without user intervention? I know about lame as an encoder from .wav to .mp3. Are there any automated solutions available (or creatable) that will allow my friend to buy a new CD, place it in his Linux MP3 server CD tray, have it rip to 256k MP3s without him having to press any keys/buttons, then eject the disk after ripping? I'm not a very good script writer so any help there is also welcomed. Currently, he is using RealJukebox on Win2K to rip to .wav and RazorLame to encode to MP3 since the free version of RJB only encodes to 96k. I'm a little confused. Do I have to mount and unmount /dev/fd0 every time I want to look at a different floppy disk? Is there a less cumbersome way to do this? Thanks. Greg

apt-get across multiple computers

I am currently helping to manage a small network of Linux workstations, each of which runs Debian. Given that each workstation has a good amount of hard disk space on it, I generally keep software installations local. Additionally, most of the software on these machines is managed via Debian's apt system. I'm looking for an easy way to get apt-get functionality across these workstations (all run the same version of Debian.) More specifically, I want a distributed version of "apt-get install". I got it to work! In case anyone is interested, here's what it looks like on SuSE 7.2 with cdrom as hdb and cdrw as hdc: After messing around with manually editing lilo.conf with no luck, I finally used yast2 LILO configuration to make a boot floppy and got the boot parameters right. /dev/ram hdb=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi ide-cd ignore=hdb ignore=hdc Or, booting with loadlin, the dos batch file contains: c:\windows\smartdrv/c cd \loadlin loadlin vmlinuz /dev/ram rw initrd=c:\loadlin\initrd root=/dev/hda4 ro hdc=ide-scsi hdb=ide-scsi ide-cd ignore=hdc ignore=hdb Below is /etc/lilo.conf Does the reference "BOOT_FILE=/boot/vmlinuz" in the append line of the global section mean that I'll boot that image regardless of my menu choices? If anyone sees any glaring errors or anything that will kill my computer, please let me know. I guess I should try it. As far as I can tell, there's no difference between vmlinuz and vmlinuz.suse, but I suppose I could replace on with a different kernel. I'm going to send this message before I try rebooting. Hi all, Recently I've been thinking of picking up a linux-based handheld and I've always been interested in the agenda vr3. It seems that their phone numbers have been disconnected, but the web site still works, as does their e-mail server. Are they out of business? Did they just forget about their web site? Anyway, I've been thinking of saving up some cash and snagging one of the vr3's that show up on ebay constantly (just as a toy to have around). Has anyone used one? What do you think? Should I just save up a lot of cash and get a zarus? And can I run a palm emulator on zarus? Thanks. Wes
