samba & window share names

Is there some easy way to resolve names to their windows share. I got annoyed at typing in ip addresses and wrote a quick script to use nmblookup to get the ip address and shove it into the /etc/hosts file. Unfortunately you have to code what hosts it enters. I'd rather have it automatically do it for all machines. (Note: this script isn't quite correct. It doesn't handle some error conditions right and wipes out the /etc/hosts file. If there is interest in the fixed version let me know and I'll get it.) I was at linux world and got to play with a zarus... One word: wow. Hardware wise, it's essentially an iPaq. But it adds an integrated keyboard and a SD slot. PocketPC and Linux

Hi all, I've got the 3800 iPAQ and installing linux on it is still pretty much "you will break your handheld". I've also got some windows software that keeps me locked in for now until companies release linux binaries or I can figure out how to run a palm emulator on my iPAQ when I get linux on it. Until that time, has ANYONE figured out how to hack activesync connectivity with Linux? It really ticks me off that M$ got rid of the ability to do a direct cable connection in PocketPC, while my hardware sweet and I love the responsiveness of my iPAQ, I almost wish I had gotten a palm or a clie. Any Ideas? Wes

PDA's and Linux

Hello all, I'm in the market for a decent PDA (Palm III died) and was wondering what everyone's experience has been with PDA's and synching with a Linux machine. I run Red Hat 7.1, not sure what kernel, but wanted to make sure the PDA and associated desktop software I bought would run under Linux. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure what would be considered the "top" perl modules. if you goto cpan.perl.org they've got like 3000 perl modules to choose from... If Mike or someone feels inclined to make me a tarball of the "top 50" I'd gladly put them on the cd. As it stands this is what we've got. You can add sound apps... ALSA O.S.S. The Alsa and OSS plugins for XMMS.. Also a collection of themes from classic.themes.org would be nice, window managers and such.. Ill help collect if you like. Getting D-Link DWL-650 card configured

Has anyone on the list been successful in configuring this card? The drivers load and the card is recognised but I am having difficulty comparing the configuration options available under Linux to Win2000. I am running a dual boot PC and the card runs under Win2k. My Linux version is Mandrake 8.0.

Loop back confusion

It seems like modifications to a loopback mounted file are only in memory. video card problems (I think)

Hi all. I'm lost trying to install suse 7.2 on a P166 with an ELSA GLoria vid card. I'm getting quite experienced with the different xfree setup utilities. When I was installing the software, I couldn't get past the video test and could only install text mode. If I use xf86config and use the vga16 driver, I can get into X, but all I see is the background color, and the only way out is ctrl-alt-back. I had to manually edit /etc/XF86Config to get rid of the 800X600 virtual screen and force it to 640X480. I did that so I could use sax without it going offscreen and out of reach of my mouse. Oh yeah, sax wasn't able to do the job, and sax2 told me I was using XFree v.3 and promised to install v.4, but it just hung totally - blank screen, hit the reset button to reboot. Using XF86Setup, I was able to install the XF86_3DLabs server (the right one) and can now get as far as the KDE desktop starting to open. It hangs when it's checking peripherals. Does that mean that some hardware is not set up properly, and if so, how do I find out which it is? Many thanks if anyone can point me in the right direction. Greg

Actually it does. I tried /bin/false and it fails to setup the ssh connection properly.
