REMINDER: Upcoming WLUG meeting

HI everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting which will be held this coming Thursday, April 11th, at 7 PM in Kinnicutt Hall at the WPI campus in Worcester, MA. At this meeting, WLUG member Tim Keller will describe to us a problem he had with Linux and how he chose to modify his copy of the Linux kernel to add a new signal to solve the problem. This talk will cover some kernel internals and programming. A more detailed abstract can be found on the WLUG website. There will be a raffle as well. Addison Wesley sent me a copy of a book entitled "Embedded Linux - Hardware, Software, and Interfacing" which I'll give to the lucky raffle winner. There is no cost to be in the raffle. I'd also like to entertain a discussion regarding content for future meetings. Here are some thoughts which I had: a) bakeoff between VMware, Win4Lin, and Bochs b) KDE3 c) representative from FSF to discuss GPL and free software d) Maddog e) SuSE 8.0 Please think about this and bring your thoughts to the meeting. Linux and NTFS on XP

In Linux dual boot systems you can mount the Win98 side drive to read and write using vfat. Question, if you run Win2000 or XP with a NTFS type file system can you still access the drives from the Linux side.

RBL access

Hey, guys. I'm getting quite a lot of crap email these days, ever since ORBS/ORBL & Co. disappeared, and MAPS went to a fee-based service. (I'm really not planning to pay $200/yr for a single blackhole list.) I was never really crazy about MAPS to begin with, because they tried too hard to be "fair." ;) ORBS was hyper-aggressive, and rocked. (About 80% of my crap email was filtered by ORBS, and I had special pre-RBL filters that extracted mail from friends using bad ISP's with open relays.) Anyway, is anyone using (or know of) a freely-queriable RBL? Although it's fun to upgrade the keyword filter, it would be easier if I only had to do it for exceptions. BTW, for the curious, my daily haul of junk mail varies from 20 to 40 messages. Can anyone beat that? -Chuck

Redundant Mail....

I couldn't think of a better way of phrasing it. I'm running Courier for incoming SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and webmail. The mail itself is stored using Maildirs in user's home directory. Short of running something like rsync between my primary box and backup, is their any good way of getting redundancy into the picture here? I already have the backup box setup as a relay in case the primary goes down, but that doesn't make the mail any closer to the user.... -mike

I executed the iptables -L command and got the following output: Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT) target prot opt source destination I'm not really that familiar with firewalls in linux, but I would assume that iptables is running without rules? I also noticed that it's not one particular host that bumps me out of telnet, but all connections and all hosts. The network folks don't know (or maybe they do) that I'm running linux on the network, but is there a way for them to periodically reset the port I'm using in the data closet? This is really quite interesting to me, so any input is very helpful. CPU & Bad NFS Question

So yesterday I had an nfs mount go bad (thought it would be a great idea to just use nfs for a few minutes to do some file comparisons across machines) .. And since then the CPU utilizaion on the machine has been pegged out. The machine still is very responsive. When the mount went bad ... I couldn't do anything with any process that was using anything on that volume. I tried a bunch of stuff, but eventually just shut down NFS (so the processes got an I/O error and died) and did an "umount -f" on that volume. A friend of mine has a small business in Westborough and I helped put together a web site for him. He now wants to dump AOL and get a less expensive "dial-up account". Anyone have a recommendation? He is paying ~$25/month for AOL... He doesn't want/need Charter, just wants to check mail a few times during the day. Also, anyone know if you can set-up email forwarding in AOL? Thanks! Steve

Problems dropping telnet sessions

Hello all, I recently traded in my Solaris 8 (x86) install for SuSE Linux 7.3 and now am having problems keeping telnet sessions open for extended periods of time. Let me give a little background on what I use this box for. Basically my linux box is used as a workstation for system monitoring. I usually have 6 to 8 separate desktops which I use to separate our different Unix environments (i.e. development, test, production ...). I may run HP Openview client on one desktop to monitor alerts and keep telnet sessions open on other desktops in order to quickly access a given server. Until recently I've been using Solaris 8 (x86) with no problems, but decided I wanted to get comfortable with linux and prove to my boss that there are many nice things we can do with linux that we can't do with Solaris. I installed SuSe 7.3 (2.4.10 kernel) and since have had troubles keeping telnet connections alive. What I mean by that is, when I leave the linux workstation inactive for a period of time (let's say 30 minutes), my telnet sessions are disconnected with the message "Connection closed by foreign host". I can find no messages in /var/adm/messages (on the Solaris side) or /var/log/messages (on the linux side). Anyone have this type of problem or more importantly, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks. Matthew

poor PCMCIA network performance

I use two network cards in my Dell Inspiron 8000 (PIII-700): a 3Com 3CCFE574BT and a Linksys wireless card. With the 3Com card (which is a 10/100) I never get better than 1.4 MB/sec (about 12 Mb/sec), even when the card is in 100 Mb mode (at some point in the past the limit was about 2.5 MB/sec). At that rate, top shows my CPU utilization pegged at about 100%, even doing a simple ftp. I know the card doesn't do DMA, but that's rather slow even for a PIO transfer. These cards have been around for ages; I don't think people would have been too satisfied with 400 KB/sec saturating a 200 MHz system. On the Linksys card, I likewise never get more than about 250 KB/sec, even if the computer is right next to the WAP and the link quality is 92/92, suggesting that I'm also hitting up against a hard limit. The WAP is connected to my main system via the motherboard ethernet, which I know from other means (when I was transferring data from my previous system to the current one) has no trouble maxing out at 10 MB/sec (that ethernet does DMA). eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"..." Well, the first one I could actually conceive of... You figure, if they acquire the catholic church they'd just decree that as of baptism you signed the EULA (sorta like opening the package means you agree to the terms (that are on the slip of paper inside the package..)) since the EULA basically means microsoft could set off a nuclear device and get away with it, they'd have no problem proving in court that the church isn't responsible for faulty prietware. As for the nuclear device, If its a microsoft nuclear device I can see the following things happening... 1. Needs repeated reboots before exploding. 2. The trigger will need to have a service pack installed. 3. You'll need to buy MSND 1.5 to get the newest features (like exploding) 4. You'll need to have IE installed along with the latest direct X drivers. 5. before exploding you'll need to get a MSND registration number and enter it in binary using a telegraph pad. 6. "Explode" and "Disarm" will be the same button... Just some thoughts... Win4Lin

Folks, This is not a commercial endorsement. I just installed Win4Lin, the product that lets you run Windows under Linux, and, for those occasions when you need Windows, it's very nice. Performance is decent, and there are only a few enhancements needed: 1) Max memory supported for Windows is 64 MB 2) Only supports serial, parallel, and virtual NIC (no scanners, USB) 3) No DirectX yet They're working on adding those goodies. But I can run Photo-Paint, TurboTax, some Windows-based Bible software packages, ... all without multibooting. At $80.00, that's not a bad price to pay. --Skip
