Hey folks! Thanks for multiple answers to my question. I ended up using Theo's solution: for i in *_x.*; do mv -f $i `echo $i | sed -e 's/_x././'`; done and it worked perfectly to get the job done. I've since been playing around with a few of the other suggestions to see what would work best next time I need to do soemthing similar. If anything, it's sparked my interest to learn more about shell scripting. Thanks again! --Tim

Bash help

Hey folks! I have a bunch of files on a server that are in the format "filename_x.dat" and I need to rename them "filename.dat", i.e. strip to last two characters off the filename while maintaining the extension. If it wasn't for the fact that I have about 400 files in multiple directories, I'd do it by hand. However, it's of a somewhat urgent nature - hence this slightly off-topic cry for help! =) I'm pretty sure there's a way to do it via a shell script (I use bash) - the only problem being that I've never written one before. Can anyone point me to a faq/tutorial/website that might explain the process? If it's a trivial task, anyone care to take a stab? Google gave me a few leads, but most aren't helping a lot. interesting problem

Shortly after I started using a wireless lan, I began having problems with connecting to my local ip addresses; I'm not sure what's causing it. Internet works FINE, and yet, a couple of minutes after I boot my machine I can't connect to anything in the 192.168 range! It doesn't matter the protocol, smb, http, etc. no connections at all. What's stranger is that my win4lin install, which uses vnet, has no problems at all. What in the world is going on here? Any thoughts? Wes

Lexmark z22 printing

Printing fun... Some of you might already know what I have to say, but I wanted to get this out for those that are in my boat... I am running a Gateway Solo 9100 laptop with Red Hat 7.3 installed. I mentioned a few months back (almost a year ago, now) that I had gotten my Lexmark z22 to print with Red Hat 7.1. One thing that I hate about upgrading RH versions is that it invariably forces me to re-learn things, since Red Hat can't seem to leave current configurations alone. 8\ ANYWAY, for a bunch of Stupid Reasons, I decided that I wanted to make use of the USB port on my z22 instead of the parallel port. Imagine, if you will, the fun I had in trying to get a printer that is barely supported by Linux to be recognized on the USB interface... I went to Lexmark's website and got the Linux drivers. Wouldn't you know it, though, but the drivers make no effort whatsoever to support the USB interface on the printer! After a bit of poking around, I realized that there was a KDE Control Panel! I use Window Maker by default and I was annoyed that control-panel was removed. I went through there and LO! the Lexmark z22 is there, right on the USB interface! 8) Granted, there are a couple snags. It looks like I can print multiple text-only documents with no problem, but if I print a Postscript file, then I have to turn the printer off then turn it on again. Compared to having no printer at all (or worse-yet, having to print from WinDOZE!), I see this as only a minor inconvenience. I'm thinking that this rig is using the foomatic configuration scripts, which may be unacceptable to some. I base this thought on the fact that the driver in use is actually for the Lexmark 3200 series, which (according to the .xml file) may print "a bit too rich"... <shrug> It looks okay for the black text that I'm printing with right now. Konqueror enhanced browsing

Hi all, I've noticed in Konqueror that one can type things like: info: ...in the URL field and Konqueror will display info pages. There are others, such as: smb: lan: ftp: man: http: camera: The aforementioned are not listed in the Konqueror enhanced browsing configuration window, and I would guess that they are Konqueror defaults. Is there a definitive list of these? I'm wondering what features I might be missing that I'd like to use! tmpfs

When researching the Reiserfs a while back, I discovered the tmpfs file system and the --bind option to mount. Both of these are nice tools to have around. --bind has made it into the mount man page, but the tmpfs is not documented in the man pages anywhere I can think to look. Does anyone know of a reason that it should not be used? I'm thinking of using it for some locking files and pid stamps -- all stuff that should not persist across a reboot. TIA, Bill

CUPS + Samba + Win2000

Help with Audio on Linux

Gurus I have a P-IV with AC97 on i810 (AvanceLogic ALC200/200P). I am unable to get FullDuplex audio working. I have installed the RC2 release of ALSA drivers but still, mic and speakers don't work together. I am pretty sure I am missing something in the configs. hardware problem?

I just had trouble booting into linux. Tried several times, but kept getting a blank screen, so I booted windoze. I noticed that I saw nothing on the screen until I got to my windows desktop, so I tried booting to linux again, and waited for my hard drive light to stop. Then I logged in with a blank screen, called up X, and it came up fine. Any ideas why my startup screen is missing? I haven't tried going into my bios yet, to see if it comes up on the screen. I'm not sure I remember how to get out of the bios on this machine, so I'm a little hesitant to go there. I'm not sure how to proceed, so any ideas are welcome. Athlon 1.2G, Spacewalker AK12A motherboard, ELSA GLoria L vid card, Viewsonic A70 monitor, 256RAM. I've got another computer here, so I could try switching monitors (not tonight). Thanks. Greg

What are Lindows and Lycoris?

HI all, Walmart is selling ultra-cheap PCs with Lindows on them (the PC is by Microtel). The screen shots look alot like KDE. Lindows makes software available for download on their website (the apps, not the OS) for a fee. I've also seen Lycoris, and on their website, they make passing references to Redmond Linux. So, I ask the question, are these just some version of Linux "packaged for the masses"? If not, what are they? Are there other similar products besides Lindows and Lycoris? Lilo :-)

Hi all On the TV lately I have heard a lot about Lilo. It seems to be in the context of something called Stitch. I am not clear on the details but Stitch apparently is some sort of extraterrestial with a bent to destroying everything it encounters. I assume the reference is, therefore, to Microsoft. The interesting thing about Lilo is that it never seems to be spelled LILO. The first letter is captialized so I assume there is some degree of case sensitivity involved. If any of you can decipher what all of this means perhaps you could fill me in! :-) I do notice that Disney seems to be involved so it would seem that Pixar is not the only place Linux seems to be making inroads. doug

Thank you all for your help.... just wanted to let you know the outcome of the installs... On the HP Vectra, there appears to be some hardware issues, as Windows 2K boot floppy fails with a Boot I/O Error. This machine has been suspect, and I will probably scavenge it for parts (CD, Memory) (It has had some intermittent problems finding the HDD.) On the HP Kayak..... it's UP! I downloaded the new boot disk image from the email below, and the install ran without a hitch. It must not like the 7.2 standard boot image since it failed both from the install disk and from the boot floppy I made straight from the CDROM. (This was a CD burned from the WLUG installfest in February and it has installed faithfully on about a dozen machines.) Thank you again. jeff -----Original Message----- From: Charles R. It depends. Does the signal 11 always happen at exactly the same point? If so, that doesn't necessarily point to flakey hardware, but rather a software bug. If it IS random, then it does sound like a memory error. You can test your RAM with memtest86, available here: http://www.memtest86.com/ Another thing you can try is making sure the amount of memory is detected correctly by Linux (check the boot up messages of the Linux kernel). If not, you can force the correct amount by appending the mem option to the linux boot command line: linux updates mem=56M You need the "updates" bit to use the update-disk mentioned earlier. Installing Redhat on HP machines

I am having a problem installing Redhat 7.2 on 2 different HP machines. I thought I might be able to get some information from the plethera of people who have done installs. Or any ideas on what to do next? One is an HP Vectra (2Gb IDE, 56MB, P200). I can fdisk and select packages, but when it goes to format the disk to install the packages, I get a signal 11 fatal error. I think there may be something flaky with this system (HDD or memory problem?) Just wondering if anyone else has seen this type of failure and could give me any more insight. I plan on replacing the HDD to see if that is the problem. The other is a dual-300 PII HP Kayak with a SCSI Drive. I get a boot error when trying to boot from the CDROM or Install Disk. This system is currently running NT 5. Any ideas why the boot would fail? Thanks, jeff

Hi again, Over the weekend, I received some "creative" feedback and all of it is appreciated. Why question was intended to find an easy way to track down the owner of an IP address within our corporate network (unregistered with DNS/WINS). Not to hack, crack, spam, or DOS them, but to gain information on that particular node. I have to bring this IP address to the attention of our Security Team, but wanted more information to give them. Given all the feedback, it seems easier just to contact the Security Team and let them figure this out. Thanks again for your time. Hi, I bought a new hard drive, Maxtor 7200 RPM, ATA133, 40GB, and began using it at ATA100. I formatted my /dev/hda5 with mkfs.ext2 and mounted it under /home. I have been using this mount with the Slackware 8.0 at /dev/hda6 for several days without any problems. Two days ago I installed Slackware8.1 on /dev/hda8 and used the same device mounted to /home. It might give an idea if I mount it like this #mount /dev/hda5 /home file names appear as $@#$#%#$ etc. but if I mount it like that #mount /dev/hda5 /home -t ext2 no problem seem to occur. I am thinking about whether I did something missing at the fdisk stage or formatting stage. Or is my new hard disk a dead-born? Or any other things you may notice? thank you, baris

Who is port scanning me?

Hi everyone, I'm constantly getting port scanned from a certain IP address on our internal corporate network. I'd really like to find out where and who this person is, but don't know much outside of ping, traceroute, nslookup, etc .... I was wondering if anyone knows of any tools that can get me more information on this person? This happens to be on our private network, so most internet tools I don't think will help much. You could download Sam Spade ( I only know of a windows version ). It will give you a good amount of information about an IP address. -Joe

A co-worker wanted help checking his AOL e-mail. He would usually use M$ IE to longin to the AOL webmail. M$ IE now crashes on the webmail page. It is unuseable in most cases. I installed netscape 6.2.3 the AOL webmail page works 100%.
