What's the disk like on the nfs server? If it's all software based RAID, writing is going to be really expensive CPU wise vs. reading. Charles and all, LPRng is not bad at all. For those who still have it available for use and have been working with it for a while, it works great. For beginners, I forsee the use of CUPS ia an easier learning curves. In my situation, I have to upgrade all of my linux boxes every two years. Sinces cups is built in to the distributions that I am using it is best for me to adapt to the change (as long as it does not disrupt functionality and the way my users works). Last I have checked, LPRng is not be updated recently ( I could be wrong). Its just seems to be a bit painful to build LPRng into new distributions that already have working printing solution. >From what I have read so far...some of us are having issues here and there with cups. memtest hangs

I'm testing some DDR ram (one pc2100 and one pc2700) in a dell 4500s (1.8GHz Intel) and memtest hangs on the second test - Address Test, Own Address, No Cache. I've tested the sticks together and separately, and the same thing happens. The test just stops after a minute or two, with no error messages and loss of keyboard control. Tested one stick in a different computer, and it tests fine. It's a brand new memory chip. The Dell seems to run slower than I'd expect for a 1.8GHz with 384MB RAM. I especially noticed it when I was installing software from source packages - it went a lot slower than on my 1.2GHz Athlon with 500MB of pc133. Other than that, it seems to run ok. Here are my questions: Is it obviously the cpu? Is there any linux software that will test the cpu similar to what memtest does with memory? Any suggestions for diagnosing this problem? Thanks, Greg

Don, I would recommend not using LPRng. It is too old. I understand that CUPS seems difficult, but once you understand it, it is the next best thing. In my office, I have setup my kickstart to install 300+ printers on all of my Redhat Linux V3 Workstation machines (100+). You can configure it via console, applet, or even web. Fedora and Redhat has gone that route and I believe that others have too. It is much better than LPRng can every be. Hello there, I am new here, and new to Linux. My company is in the middle of a platform migration for our Oracle ERP system. We are moving away from Solaris towards a Intel/Linux solution. I've got a quick question about printers. Is there a printers.conf file in Red Hat like there is in Solaris (I couldn't find one). Here's my issue: I have 5 servers in a 9i RAC array and I don't want to set up my 50 printers on each server. Can anyone suggest a way to "copy" the printers I set up on one server to the other 4? No, the install isn't the easiest thing to someone not familar with it, but the Gentoo documentation is quite good. The basic install (known as a stage 1 install) alone can take a fair amount of time since everything has to be compiled. However, you can save time by using what's called a stage 2 install where some of the basic install is precompiled. A stage 3 install is where the entire basic install is already compiled. We would not be able to complete a stage 1 or stage 2 install during a typical WLUG meeting and it is the kind of thing to let run overnight. If you are a laptop user you can download all the neccessary source files in advance and leave the meeting with the laptop still compiling. Otherwise, a constant, and preferably fast, network connection is required. Installing Gentoo

Its not all automatic and requires you to actually do some work on the command line (setting up the mirrors for portage, optionally configuring the make.conf file to optimize compilation, partioning via good 'ol fdisk, mkfs-ing filesystems, chroot'ing and such) but a printable Quick Install Guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml) really takes out the difficulty. I, at least, had no problem setting it up, a couple of times. The only real issue with Gentoo is that if you do go for the compile-everything-mode it takes a good full day to get up and running, and compiling in X and KDE or GNOME is best left for a second day of work (or just let it run overnight). You *can* use prebuilt binary packages, but then why bother using Gentoo? Additionally, all the preinstall stuff can be done with the Gentoo Live CD or something like Knoppix (which I would have used, but needed 2.6 kernel support, and at the time couldn't get Knoppix to boot a 2.6 kernel, whereas the Gentoo Live CD did have it). > Someone has mentioned it before, but how about an install fest so others can get hands on with different distro installs? Folks, I need some help here. I am a Linux / Unix newbie and I am wondering how I can painlessly (although I realize that i must put in a lot of hard work) get a carrer in the Unix / Linux world. I am a CCNA, MCSE, CCSA, N+ and A+ and I am comfortable in the networking field. I am comfortable with the Cisco IOS, Checkpoint as well as the microsoft shit. But after realizing that Microsoft is not my very friendly area, I am leaning towards going into the Linux / Unix world. Where should I start? I dont want to spend time going to school and I am confortable with self study. What certifications would you recommend and what books do I need? Thanks, John

Well, you probably couldn't do a Stage 1 install. Seems like you'd have to do like a Stage 3 and use --pkgonly for things like KDE/Gnome/Xorg. That's probably obvious, but thought I'd point it out. And by using --pkgonly, you lose any speed benefits that you could have gained by compiling . . . so it's kind of a catch-22. I guess it depends on the CPU and RAM of the machine, but a Stage 1 install (w/ XF86/KDE) took 4-5 days on my machine. File Descriptors

Hello All, Can anyone point me to a good primer on the top of UNIX file descriptors? We had an issue with them recently at work on a SunOS 5.8 host and we upped the limit from 1024 to 4096 via the /etc/system file. There was some debate as to whether or not it was a good idea. My Google searches implied it *might* not be a good idea in some circumstances but I found no obvious conclusions. I know what they are - I just want to understand the pros and cons of changing the default limit...and why there are limits in the first place. Thank you for any help! -- Gary

Well, I'm just a *lowly student*, but a linux and FOSS enthusiast. I've used (in the following order) Debian, SuSE 7.1, Redhat 8/9, Slackware 9, Gentoo. Gentoo's pretty much stuck and I really like it. As far as 'deploying linux', I'm afraid my extent of that is moving my family members over to linux (work in progress) and friends here at WPI. Thanks to all for letting me attend my first LUG! Dave Walsh from Redhat was a great speaker. I was just thinking about a topic for a future meeting. It was nice to meet all of you, but didn't get to discuss what distro/windows manager you all use, who you work for and how your company is productionalizing linux. We have linux deployed now and I am curious to know how ya'll have done it as noone else I know is using it.....yet! fedora core 1 or 2 with lirc remote control program

Fyi... Found my solution. Fedora core 1 and lirc only works with v7.0pre4 and lower. In pre5, 6, 7, something is broken to cause ati remote wonder to stop responding. Sonny
