USB -> Parellel

Hi, all... I inherited a HP Laserjet 1100 from work, recently. (This model's failure mode is that you have to feed it one page at a time, since if you put multiple sheets in the tray, it will grab anywhere from 5 to 20 at a time.) Anywho, it's a nice sweet printer, especially for the price. I'm using it at work with my WinXP box. However, I'd like to bring it home to use with my laptop. It has a parallel interface, and my slick, modern laptop is lacking this. (And I really don't feel like kicking up my 486 each time I want to print something!) Does anyone have any experience with one of those USB to parallel converter dealies? They seem pretty cheap, but I wonder about driver support and whatnot. The USS720 driver seems to be the only one I can find, I assume that Lucent sells that to anyone making such a device, so it's a matter of finding a list somewhere of devices using that chipset. Any ideas here? Thanks. -Chuck

Hi All, I am using openssh on cygwin along with ssh-tunnel (a pearl script that uses IO and IO::Select) to tunnel through a firewall in order to gain access to my desktop at home. I have noticed that recently the behavior has changed and my connection is broken after 3 seconds of inactivity. How do I, a) find out what is causing the connection to be broken and/or b) keep the connection alive. As long as I am actively feeding commands at the shell prompt the connection stays alive. PHP and .forward

You Do it Electronics down 128 has an ATX power supply tester for under $10...I also have one if you want to borrow it and Newegg should have one too. All you do is plug it in to your PS Motherboard connector, and flip the switch. If a green light comes on, it's good. I need LSI 103o IT root disk controller driver for SCO 5.0.6 I have a new PC, HP ML 350 G4 that must be installed with SCO 5.0.6 but its said that no root risk controller found. I have done so many things to make it enable, but seem unsuccessful so far. I have download it from the internet and its still not much helpin' me. Recommended virtual private server (UML) hosting?

I don't see where hosting would much of a problem at all. The trick is to charge for it. WLUG members who wanted an account on the box would each pay in a couple bucks a month and that money would be used to pay to host the box. If somebody had a decent speakeasy type (allows servers, has decent bandwidth) account, that money could be used to pay the electric bill for the box(s), add capacity, etc. Then you host an webpage,distro respository,irc channel, etc. off of it. Had the same problem. I needed a 450W power supply. The video card is wicked intensive. The CPU fan doesn't spin, the computer doesn't beep - nothing (so no beeps or POST codes). The weird thing is that when I turn the power switch off, the LED stays lit for another 5-6 seconds. I'm not sure if that means anything though... In case it matters, the mobo is an Abit NF7 with a single DIMM of 512MB RAM (Crucial), an AMD Athlon 2400+ processor, an ATI Radeon 9600XT video card and it's powered by a 400W power supply. I bought all the parts from New Egg about 7 months ago, put it together and haven't had a single problem save for this. I've tried running it bare bones and moving the DIMM into a different slot. I have a spare computer, but the connector from the power supply doesn't seem to have the same plug as the one on my board. I don't have any extra RAM or a processor to try swapping things out with unfortunately. I've tried Googling the symptoms and the red LED on the mobo to no avail. It seems the only mention of the red LED problem was answered with the typical "check your connections, the mobo's fried, etc..." - no real diagnostics. I stopped in at a computer shop on 122A in Holden this afternoon and was quoted a $35 "bench fee" for taking a look at it and $75/hr to do any work. Like I said before, all the parts are still under warranty through New Egg and I'd happily send them back but I need to figure out what's not working. And I realize this is a Linux list and this is kind of off-topic. That being said, you folks are pretty bright and knowledgable so I figured I'd throw this out there. The LED is +5V indicator. It's not likely a power supply problem. There are probably fans on the northbridge chip and CPU. Do they spin up? Bad memory can cause all kinds of flaky problems. Do you have a different stick you can try? At the very least, try booting with the DIMM slots empty and see if it behaves differently. If you'd like, contact me off list and I may be able to give it a try. Start by trying to boot with the bare minimum components. Plug in only the CPU, one stick of RAM, video card, and keyboard. Local service/repair recommendations

After unpacking my computer during a recent move, I have been having serious hardware issues. Basically, the computer won't boot up and the only output I get is a burning red LED on the motherboard when I turn it on. I've checked all the connections, Googled my symptoms and even reinstalled all hardware, piece by piece. Luckily, everything but the processor is under warranty and I don't have a problems RMA'ing something back to NewEgg. I just need to narrow the problem equipment down and I'm the first to admit my lack of hardware knowledge. Can someone recommend a local shop that can at least diagnose the issue and maybe run some hardware tests? Hell, I'd even be glad to pay someone local on this mailing list to diagnose my problem.
