Thanx for the info John. Unfortunately I can't use the Red Hat GFS, it requires v3.0 and we cannot upgrade to that yet. I have been pushing for it, but Oracle won't give me an definite answer as to whether their apps are certified for RH 3.0. We could go with Veritas' Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC, but that would require considerable change, and no one here knows the software. Getting a NAS box which provides NFS service to the DB servers and which has the require reliability you need. I personally like NetApps, but they can be pricey. But even with a single head, they're reliable and run well. I had one box with an uptime of almost 500 days. Oh yeah, UPS and Generator backup helps as well. *grin* You could get away with using another cheaper NAS, but since you spent the money on the SAN, why not just use that and GFS to provide the storage you need. Esp if most of the filesystems you provide are read (mostly) then you shouldn't have many problems. NFS question

Hello All, I've been a slient member for awhile, now I have a question/problem I hope someone can answer. I have an Oracle 9i RAC set up consisting of 3 database servers, two apps servers and an EMC Clarion CX700 SAN. The servers are all running Red Hat 2.1, the db servers are at kernel .34 and the apps servers are at .49. I have 5 nfs mount points shared out by the first database server. One mount point is for logs from the database servers (only they connect to it), and the others are for miscellaneous files and storage. We have been doing failover testing, shutting down a database server and seeing if the other two keep processing requests. We have a problem when we shut down the first database server, the one sharing the nfs volumes. The other two servers just hang trying to connect to the shares. I have tried every option in my fstab file to make the servers stop trying to reach the nfs shares if the server is not available, but nothing has worked. Here is one of the lines from the fstab file where I mount a share: shoprod1:/applcsf /applcsf nfs soft,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,retrans=6,timeo=14,intr Can you see anything wrong with this line, or can anyone suggest something else to try. I can't even forceably unmount the shares with an umount -f. And if we try to kill any processes accessing the shares the kill command just hangs (even with a kill -9). Any suggestions? I'm not sync'ing data, all three servers are writing logs to the share constantly (the applcsf share). We didn't buy Veritas volume manager, and we are not running Red Hat 3.0 yet, so I had to go with NFS for a shared file system. Believe me, I wish I didn't have to use NFS. I am looking into buying a NAS device to store the shares on, that way any of the servers can go down and the others won't be affected. I don't think there is any good solution. Using the "soft" and "intr" mount options is an extremely bad idea. Do it only if you don't care about losing/corrupting your data. Important data should always be mounted "hard,nointr". Personally, I avoid NFS like the plague. I only use it for readonly mounts (where soft,intr is less of a problem). Internet service for newbies

This is in regards to the install fest that will be happening Saturday at the Worcester Computer Coop. These machines will be given to people with little computer experience / money. All they need for an Internet service is a very simple dial up. Has anyone tried Net zero for Lindows(linspire) and got it running under Linux? If not can someone recommend a good ISP. SuSE Watcher

Hi All, I just installed SuSE Server version 9 (my first SuSE installation) and I'd like to use the "Watcher" to get updates automatically, but I can't figure out what the "autorization" window wants. I know it's looking for a username/password pair, but what username/password?? I don't recall creating one, other than the usual 'root' and various users. Patrick and I agreed that a hard drive installation of Knoppix would probably be a reasonable thing to do for several reasons, a) its Debian based, b) it has *everything*, c) the live CD feature, d) its pretty easy to install, e) it pretty easily handles non-English languages. My only concern is to insure that the hard drives on these machine are at least 3-4 GB to accommodate a full Knoppix install. As a backup, I would like at least one other distribution handy in case we get an ornery machine or an undersized hard drive. It would need to have some games, KDE or Gnome, and OpenOffice, at a minimum. Clearly, this isn't a good software selection for a 100MHz machine, so that's another reason to have another distro handy. (I don't think there were more than a couple of machines which were this slow). The event will take place from noon - 4 PM. I'll update the WLUG website shortly with directions and such. I'm looking for volunteers who will be able to attend and who wish to burn a few Knoppix V3.6 CDs. Please contact me before your burn anything or we'll likely end up with way too many CDs. The room where this event will be held is a pretty good size. There will be ample opportunity for unnamed WLUG members to trip on power cords and pull them out mid-installation. :-) Many folks have asked when we'd be having our next install fest - well, this is it! Another thing I just thought of is to check the seperation rollers. They are little blue rollers that make sure you only get one sheet at a time. They should have ridges on them (like treads on a tire) they almost look like veins. If it is relatively smooth, there's your problem. Unfortunately for a number of reasons, it is considered to be a boat anchor -- I.E. there is no linux support and never will be. Once should do the trick. There are pickup rollers / d rollers, get a damp cloth (water) and wipe it down...process takes not even a minute. (The only rollers you have to get are the ones that pickup the paper) Also unplug printer first. Portmapper using incorrect ports - how to prevent?

After suffering a power outage, I noticed spamassassin wouldn't start. I'd get: # /etc/init.d/spamassassin restart Restarting SpamAssassin Mail Filter Daemon: No spamd found running; none killed. Could not create INET socket: Address already in use IO::Socket::INET: Address already in use After a bit of checking my configuration, and googling for spamassassin problems, I tried: # lsof -i :783 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME ypserv 1025 root 5u IPv4 2855 TCP *:spamd (LISTEN) Apparently ypserv grabbed the spamassassin tcp port 783 before spamd started. I fixed the problem by re-arranging the startup sequences in /etc/rc5.d and restarting everything: # lsof -i | egrep "(ypserv|spamd)" spamd 10626 spamd 5u IPv4 44885 TCP localhost:spamd (LISTEN) ypserv 10641 root 4u IPv4 45184 UDP *:643 ypserv 10641 root 5u IPv4 45244 TCP *:646 (LISTEN) I'm wondering if there's a better fix? USB -> Parellel

Hi, all... I inherited a HP Laserjet 1100 from work, recently. (This model's failure mode is that you have to feed it one page at a time, since if you put multiple sheets in the tray, it will grab anywhere from 5 to 20 at a time.) Anywho, it's a nice sweet printer, especially for the price. I'm using it at work with my WinXP box. However, I'd like to bring it home to use with my laptop. It has a parallel interface, and my slick, modern laptop is lacking this. (And I really don't feel like kicking up my 486 each time I want to print something!) Does anyone have any experience with one of those USB to parallel converter dealies? They seem pretty cheap, but I wonder about driver support and whatnot. The USS720 driver seems to be the only one I can find, I assume that Lucent sells that to anyone making such a device, so it's a matter of finding a list somewhere of devices using that chipset. Hi All, I am using openssh on cygwin along with ssh-tunnel (a pearl script that uses IO and IO::Select) to tunnel through a firewall in order to gain access to my desktop at home. I have noticed that recently the behavior has changed and my connection is broken after 3 seconds of inactivity. How do I, a) find out what is causing the connection to be broken and/or b) keep the connection alive. As long as I am actively feeding commands at the shell prompt the connection stays alive. PHP and .forward

Here is a question for you PHP fans out there. I'm attemping to create a webpage that will change, delete, create, etc a users .forward file. I want to do it in PHP and was curious if anyone knew of a current php script that would do this for me. I would write it myself, but why re-invent the wheel if I don't have to.
