The LED is +5V indicator. It's not likely a power supply problem. There are probably fans on the northbridge chip and CPU. Do they spin up? Bad memory can cause all kinds of flaky problems. Do you have a different stick you can try? At the very least, try booting with the DIMM slots empty and see if it behaves differently. If you'd like, contact me off list and I may be able to give it a try. Start by trying to boot with the bare minimum components. Plug in only the CPU, one stick of RAM, video card, and keyboard. Local service/repair recommendations

After unpacking my computer during a recent move, I have been having serious hardware issues. Basically, the computer won't boot up and the only output I get is a burning red LED on the motherboard when I turn it on. I've checked all the connections, Googled my symptoms and even reinstalled all hardware, piece by piece. Luckily, everything but the processor is under warranty and I don't have a problems RMA'ing something back to NewEgg. I just need to narrow the problem equipment down and I'm the first to admit my lack of hardware knowledge. Can someone recommend a local shop that can at least diagnose the issue and maybe run some hardware tests? Hell, I'd even be glad to pay someone local on this mailing list to diagnose my problem. I have a laptop that I want to do a Gentoo install on. We could use that for showing a stage3 "fast" install and switch to Mike's small form factor for post-install. I also have a small form factor PC I could bring in that has Gentoo on it if necessary. I think discussing what makes Gentoo unique, its pros and cons, will be great. If we're going to discuss why distro is better (or worse) than other than I say Debian. I say this because the "pretty" distros (SuSe, Mandrake, Fedora) are too different for a fair comparison. I also say this because I switched to Gentoo after trying a little bit of Debian. NFS Trouble

I have an interesting problem that is occuring. I have a /home directory on a file server and I have several login servers that mount this /home directory via NFS. Now this /home directory has a ton of files and directorys (about 2000 user accounts). I noticed that when I perform a copy of a large file ( I tested with a 50 MB file) on a login server from something like /tmp to the NFS mounted /home, the load average on the file server jumps up to over 7, and seems to take forever (around 3-4 minutes). If I copy a large file (once again I tested with 50 MB) from the NFS mounted /home to like /tmp on the login server, there is no noticable load average increase and it occurs in approximately 10-15 seconds. So it seems that writes to the NFS mounted /home are taking longer than they should and are spiking the load average. Both the file server and the login servers are dual P3's with 2 gigs of ram. Has anyone ever seen anything like this, or knows of any solutions to this problem? What's the disk like on the nfs server? If it's all software based RAID, writing is going to be really expensive CPU wise vs. reading. Charles and all, LPRng is not bad at all. For those who still have it available for use and have been working with it for a while, it works great. For beginners, I forsee the use of CUPS ia an easier learning curves. In my situation, I have to upgrade all of my linux boxes every two years. Sinces cups is built in to the distributions that I am using it is best for me to adapt to the change (as long as it does not disrupt functionality and the way my users works). Last I have checked, LPRng is not be updated recently ( I could be wrong). Its just seems to be a bit painful to build LPRng into new distributions that already have working printing solution. >From what I have read so far...some of us are having issues here and there with cups. memtest hangs

I'm testing some DDR ram (one pc2100 and one pc2700) in a dell 4500s (1.8GHz Intel) and memtest hangs on the second test - Address Test, Own Address, No Cache. I've tested the sticks together and separately, and the same thing happens. The test just stops after a minute or two, with no error messages and loss of keyboard control. Tested one stick in a different computer, and it tests fine. It's a brand new memory chip. The Dell seems to run slower than I'd expect for a 1.8GHz with 384MB RAM. I especially noticed it when I was installing software from source packages - it went a lot slower than on my 1.2GHz Athlon with 500MB of pc133. Other than that, it seems to run ok. Here are my questions: Is it obviously the cpu? Is there any linux software that will test the cpu similar to what memtest does with memory? Any suggestions for diagnosing this problem? Thanks, Greg

Don, I would recommend not using LPRng. It is too old. I understand that CUPS seems difficult, but once you understand it, it is the next best thing. In my office, I have setup my kickstart to install 300+ printers on all of my Redhat Linux V3 Workstation machines (100+). You can configure it via console, applet, or even web. Fedora and Redhat has gone that route and I believe that others have too. It is much better than LPRng can every be. Hello there, I am new here, and new to Linux. My company is in the middle of a platform migration for our Oracle ERP system. We are moving away from Solaris towards a Intel/Linux solution. I've got a quick question about printers. Is there a printers.conf file in Red Hat like there is in Solaris (I couldn't find one). Here's my issue: I have 5 servers in a 9i RAC array and I don't want to set up my 50 printers on each server. Can anyone suggest a way to "copy" the printers I set up on one server to the other 4? No, the install isn't the easiest thing to someone not familar with it, but the Gentoo documentation is quite good. The basic install (known as a stage 1 install) alone can take a fair amount of time since everything has to be compiled. However, you can save time by using what's called a stage 2 install where some of the basic install is precompiled. A stage 3 install is where the entire basic install is already compiled. We would not be able to complete a stage 1 or stage 2 install during a typical WLUG meeting and it is the kind of thing to let run overnight. If you are a laptop user you can download all the neccessary source files in advance and leave the meeting with the laptop still compiling. Otherwise, a constant, and preferably fast, network connection is required.
