Hi Everybody, This e-mail is to remind you about the upcoming WLUG meeting which is being held on Thursday, June 13th at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI Campus in Worcester, MA, USA. With the arrival of my new daughter two weeks ago (May 24), it has been very busy at my house. Combined with some unrestful evenings, I have not had any time to prepare a presentation for this meeting. The floor is open for anybody who has a reasonable presentation to make to the group. Please contact me to make arrangements. As you've seen in the past, the presentation need not be extremely fancy. Feedback I've received from group members indicates that these presentations are well received, and are certainly better alternatives to sitting around for an hour trying to figure out what to discuss. :-) Recent Linux developments that might be fodder for discussion are KDE 3.0.x, United Linux, aptget-rpm, Mozilla 1.0, OpenOffice.org 1.0, and probably many other things. At this meeting, we can also attempt to finalize our plans for a WLUG summer barbecue. It might be a good idea to combine this with a 5th year anniversary celebration, as WLUG was originally founded in July of 1997. less & line numbers

This is weird... I can't get "less" to display line numbers in the left column. All that happens is that the text of the file I'm viewing shifts to the right, adding 2 blank columns. It looks like the shift amount is too small to display the numbers, so I don't get to see them. I'm seeing this on both RedHat 7.1 and 7.2 systems. On an older system (6.0?), less shows the line numbers. (I could have sworn that this was working right recently, but it doesn't now.) I'm using the "--LINE-NUMBERS" option to try to see the lines on the newer versions, and the "-N" option on the older versions. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

WMA --> MP3 conversion?

Hi all, I have a bunch of files that are in asf format. I understand that this is basically WMA (Windows Media Audio). Makes sense, since they are recordings of church services. :) Anyway, I want to convert them to MP3 so that I can hear them without having to stoop to loading certain Left Coast poor-excuse-for-operating-systems... Would anyone happen to know of a good/reasonable WMA-->MP3 converter for Linux? Wireless nics and linux.

Hi All, I may be FINALLY getting some wireless access in my house (It's amazing what a simple furniture move can accomplish). So I'm wondering, what wireless nics work in Linux. I've heard that there are some problems, do any of you have 802.11b networks at home (what's the mac address range.....wink)? If so, what nics are you using. Do the USB one's work (actually, I'll check this one out on my own, it's the pcmcia cards I need the info on). Thanks, Wes

Multiple mice on a laptop

Hello, I've got a laptop that usually resides in a docking station at work, where it is connected to an ordinary wheelmouse. That works fine. When I take the laptop out of the docking station, disconnect the mouse, and start up Linux again (so using the touchpad), the pointer tends to go crazy. Now, I know the reason for this is the protocol is wrong in the XF86Config file. The wheelmouse uses IMPS/2 with 5 buttons (3+wheel), the touchpad PS/2 with 2 buttons. I can fix this by editing the XF86Config file appropriately, and the touchpad works fine. Now, my question is: Is there any way to get Linux to automatically figure out that the mouse is not attached, and so fall back on the touchpad? BTW, I've set up two "Pointer" sections in XF86Config, and just adjust the CorePointer line to reference the correct one. XFree doesn't like having two CorePointers. I'm using SuSE 7.3, XFree86 4.x if it matters. Thanks, -Adam

monitoring a Matrix 3000

I have two different sets of cables to work with; 940-0020B and 940-0024C. In short, I can't get any indication of communication between my linux box and the UPS. I've looked through the FAQ's and other documentation pretty carefully, but I must be missing something. Any direction anyone can give would be appreciated. Quick tape question...

I've got an HP tape drive model C1537A that has the annoying trait of rewinding itself automatically. Does anybody have any suggestions on ways to prevent this behavior? mt doesn't seem to have an option to turn this feature off. Thanks, Tim.
