Hi I have a problem with my cd-writer. On windows, I have no problem (dommage). But with my redhat 8.0 kernel 2.4.18-24.8.0. Does anyone have any recommendations of open source tools for generating very high volume http traffic simulating large numbers of clients form multiple IP addresses? I did a search on sourceforge and most of the projects have not released any new code in 18 months or more - so not sure of status on most of them. I need to test an application that uses HTTP as its transport layer (but not HTML) so open source tools would allow the customizations I need, with out haveing to write everything from scratch.

scanner help

I have a new Epson 1660 scanner, and I'm having difficulty getting it working with the sane drivers. Here's what I have thus far... 1. lsusb worked immediately. Device Descriptor: <snip> Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:0317 Hewlett-Packard Device Descriptor: <snip> (I recently unloaded & loaded the USB & printer modules, and the device numbers for the printer (HP) and scanner (Epson) changed.) 2. sane-find-scanner: found USB scanner (vendor = 0x04b8, product = 0x011e) at device /dev/usb/scanner0 This did not work until I added this to the /etc/modules.conf file and modprobe'd "scanner": options scanner vendor=0x04b8 product=0x011e 3. My /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file has: usb /dev/usb/scanner0 (Is that right? I did try some other devices) I also tried usb 0x04b8 0x011e No luck 4. I chmod'd (666) /dev/usb/scanner*. 5. xsane always fails. Xfer mail from Outlook to...

Anyone out there know how to get email out of Outlook/Exchange and into something else? I use outlook at work, and also at home when doing stuff for work, but want to get all that stuff into a flat file similar to what UNIX uses (used?), which is also similar to what Eudora uses. In other words, I want to get away from Outlook/exchange all together and get into a format that is easily manipulated by scripts or easily imported into other email applications. Computer 4 sale

Dual PIII 1ghz Case + power 512mb ram 2 Hard Drives - 16gig + 8gig (or about that size) Sony IDE CDRW (fast, I think 48x,24x,16x) Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI Ethernet card $400 There will be 2 big gaping holes in the front if I can't find the 5 1/4 drive bay covers. No video card. Also, nVidia geForce 3 and above cards don't work with this motherboard. nVidia blames it on Tyan, and Tyan blames it on nVidia. My Radeon 7550 works just fine (but you don't get that). If you want, I have an old voodoo3 card which was in this at one point, it worked then, you can have it for free with the computer. Under Windows, I was never able to get USB working well (keyboard was fine, camera + mouse weren't). Under linux, usb worked 100%, so I'm assuming it's just my luck with windows and not the hardware. I will be wiping the drives clean before selling it, so you're on your own for an OS. I think one of the drives may be mounted "creatively" so be forewarned. If anyone wants it, hopefully we can arrange a drop-off & pickup, perhaps at a wlug meeting to avoid any shipping. Please send replies to me, and not the list. -Marc

Vince is a member of GNHLUG and is also a Systems Support Manager for NECS/Canon (the largest independent Canon dealer in New England). Vince has been involved with Linux for the last 4-5 years, and also possesses a Novell CNE and a Windows MCP. Light refreshments will be served at the meeting. Some of this may also be related to the OS scheduler and VM configuration of the kernel - both of which have been improved in the new 2.5/2.6 kernel. The new shceduler is preemptive and does a better job of giving interactive processes a higher priority which makes the box "feel" faster. Redhat GUI performance

I have a general question about Linux performance... I am running Redhat 8.0 on a Dell 400MHz, 128MB system (OptiPlex) with an 8MB ATI Rage Pro Video card. I have a fairly basic workstation installation, with SSHd, ftpd, telnetd, apached, and a couple other services running. Gnome seems to take forever to open windows/applications. It can be on the order of 10 seconds to a minute for some applications to come up. (Mozilla is one of the worst, even to just bring up a local file as the home page for the browser) Is Gnome just a very slow GUI, or is there something that I can do to speed up my system?? I know of several (5-6) people who have installed RedHat 7.2...8.0 on Dell and Sony systems (all CPU are 866MHz+) with Gnome or KDE and the performance has been very slow in the GUI. Even with a higher end 1.5GHz CPU/512MB RAM system. Is there a Linux distribution that has a standard GUI that is very responsive? Is Redhat just too bulky to run quickly, or do I need to download a better GUI for Redhat? With Windows2000, this system was very responsive, and the other people I know about are running XP, which is so much faster that they run XP most of the time now. Thanks, jeff

Good advice. The X window system amd font server create its unix domain sockets as files under /tmp along with other programs, which will not show up doing "fuser -u /tmp/*". Also do a "netstat -pA" to get a list of all the unix domain sockets and look for files in /tmp. A bit off topic - phpnuke et al.

I'm posing this question becuase I'm betting some on this list have ventured down the path before me... I'm looking to avoid having to keep up on the latest and greatest web development stuff just to have a useful an interesting site. So, I'm looking for something like phpnuke to convert over to. I am aware of phpnuke, and other similar packages out there. I'm planning on downloading nuke to see what it can and can't do... I wouldn't mind having control over things providing I have the time, but am to the point where I do not want ot have to write code every time I get an idea. I already have a job... So, anyone have a favorite tool, collection of tools, etc., that they would recommend for a person site that supports logins, discussion threads, etc.? Steve

Cool little set of scripts. They even come with that funky Desktop icon. What a luxury! Working through the scripts though it seems that the USB system does not see the USB device properly. Looking through some posts it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel. Kernel 2.4.21 will have the updated usbnet patch that will allow communication with the 5600. I expect I'll be able to make some minor mods to the zaurus_check script and it should work like a charm. Thanks! Toshiba e330 + Linux

I've had a Toshiba e330 for about 3 months now, however it runs windows and I can't interface it with my linux machine. I was curious if anyone had any information regarding putting linux on one of these babies. I plan to get a wireless card and GPS adaptor for it soon, so how would that affect it. freeswan

Is anyone out there using freeswan? I'm thinking of repeating my wireless network over to my office after my move and I'm thinking of setting up freeswan to encrypt the traffic more tightly on the network when I do. The howto's I've found have been on setting up a vpn between networks, is it possible to set up freeswan to encrypt traffic on a single lan (until sdmca laws make it technically illegal to do so.....). wireless repeating...

Hi all, We're MOVING! And now I have an opportunity to learn something new... Where we're going, our house is right next to the Church, and the Church offices are 25 yards from the Church and across the street. The Church is made of stone, the office-building is made of brick. Do you think it's possible to somehow put a repeater in the Church that will extend my wireless network the "last mile" so I can have internet access in my study? If so, what would you recommend? hi Wlug, I have a laptop gateway 450sx4 with a video card, "ATI Technologies Inc. Mobility M6", as windows displays it. I could not figure which kernel video module I should load. another question is that what will go to the Driver section of XF86Config in xfree4.3.0? slackware uses vesa as default which does not use any hardware acceleration. thanks for any help, baris

What's people's experience with gentoo? I'm thinking of upgrading one of my boxes to it in the near future. This is a box I really mess around with, so how bleeding edge can I get? Is it easy to keep some packages at stable releases, and some at unstable, or is it more of an all or nothing thing? I guess what I want is, a way of trying the newest stuff, but an easy way of going back to stable when I'm horrified with how buggy the newest stuff is. Also... for the stable releases... how secure has the distro been as a whole? Comments, horror stories, massive praise? -Marc

printing problem

I'm trying to configure my LPRng print queue to add a banner page to my print job. OS: Red Hat 8.0 Printer/driver: The printer is a Postscript network printer, using the Lexmark 4039 10 plus driver. I'm able to print just fine. I followed the instructions in /usr/share/doc/redhat-config-printer-0.4.24/README for hijacking a printconf spool. Then I added this to the printcap.local: :bp=/usr/libexec/filters/psbanner:\ However, I can't get the a banner page. What am I doing wrong? TIA, Bill

WLUG member Tim Keller will be discussing how he took Linux and other Open Source software to create his own Digital Video Recorder (DVR) similar to a TiVO. Tim will describe just what a DVR is and how it works. Tim will also discuss software issues, and finally will perform a live demo. I've just updated the website. For more information about hardware compatibility, see the Red Hat Linux Hardware Compatibility List at http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/ Installation-Related Notes This section outlines those issues that are related to Anaconda (the Red Hat Linux installation program) and installing Red Hat Linux 9 in general. o The Red Hat Linux installation program has the ability to test the integrity of the installation media. It works with the CD, DVD, hard drive ISO, and NFS ISO installation methods. Red Hat recommends that you test all installation media before starting the installation process, and before reporting any installation-related bugs (many of the bugs reported are actually due to improperly-burned CDs). To use this test, type linux mediacheck at the boot: prompt. o While most present-day computers are able to start the installation process by booting directly from the first Red Hat Linux distribution CD, some hardware configurations require the use of a boot diskette. If your hardware requires a boot diskette, you should be aware of the following change. Red Hat Linux 9 uses a different boot diskette layout than previous releases of Red Hat Linux. There is now a single boot diskette image file (bootdisk.img) that is used to boot all systems requiring a boot diskette. If you are performing anything other than an installation from an IDE or USB device, you will be asked to insert a driver diskette created from one of the following image files: - drvnet.img - For network installations - drvblock.img - For SCSI installations - pcmciadd.img - For PCMCIA installations As with previous releases of Red Hat Linux, these image files can be found in the images/ directory on the first installation CD. o Also in the images/ directory is the boot.iso file. This file is an ISO image that can be used to boot the Red Hat Linux installation program. It is a handy way to start network-based installations without having to use multiple diskettes. To use boot.iso, your computer must be able to boot from its CD-ROM drive, and its BIOS settings must be configured to do so. You must then burn boot.iso onto a recordable/rewriteable CD-ROM. o The rescue mode environment (accessed by booting with the "linux rescue" boot-time command) has been enhanced. Numerous requested utilities have been added, and there is now support for activating network interfaces. Commands needed for SCSI tape support are also available. Please test this environment and send us your feedback. If you chose to mount an existing installation in rescue mode and you have man pages installed on that existing installation, the man command will work while in rescue mode. o The Red Hat Linux installation program now detects existing Red Hat products on your system, and will prompt you to select the product you would like to upgrade. You will also have the option of performing a complete re-installation of the system instead of upgrading. Please report any problems you may experience with this new feature. If the contents of your /etc/redhat-release file has been changed from the default, your Red Hat Linux installation may not be found when attempting an upgrade to Red Hat Linux 9. You can relax some of the checks against this file by entering the following at the boot: prompt: linux upgradeany Use the upgradeany option only if your existing Red Hat Linux installation was not detected. o isolinux is now used for booting the Red Hat Linux installation CD. If you have problems booting from the CD, you can write the images/bootdisk.img image to a diskette according to the directions in the Red Hat Linux Installation Guide. o During a graphical installation, you can now press SHIFT-Print Screen and a screenshot of the current installation screen will be taken. These are stored in the following directory: /root/anaconda-screenshots/ The screenshots can be accessed once the newly-installed system is rebooted. o The parted disk partition manipulation program has been upgraded to version 1.6. o Users of Red Hat Linux 6.2 that want to upgrade their system to Red Hat Linux 9 must first have all errata updates applied before starting the upgrade process. The most straightforward way to accomplish this is to use Red Hat Network. A Red Hat Linux 6.2 system that is not completely up-to-date will not upgrade successfully to Red Hat Linux 9. o Text mode installations using a serial terminal work best when the terminal supports UTF-8. Under UNIX and Linux, Kermit supports UTF-8. For Windows, Kermit '95 works well. Non-UTF-8 capable terminals will work as long as only English is used during installation. An enhanced serial display can be used by passing "utf8" as a boot-time option to the installation program. For example: linux console=ttyS0 utf8 General Notes This section describes post-installation issues. o There have been issues observed when upgrading Red Hat Linux 6.<x>, 7.<x>, 8.0, and 9 systems running Ximian GNOME. The issue is caused by version overlap between the official Red Hat Linux RPMs and the Ximian RPMs. This configuration is not supported by Red Hat. You have several choices in resolving this issue: 1) You may remove Ximian GNOME from your Red Hat Linux system prior to upgrading Red Hat Linux. 2) You may upgrade Red Hat Linux, and then immediately reinstall Ximian GNOME. 3) You may upgrade Red Hat Linux, and then immediately remove all remaining Ximian RPMs, and replace them with the corresponding Red Hat Linux RPMs. You must resolve the version overlap using one of the above choices. Failure to do so will result in an unstable GNOME configuration. o There has been some confusion regarding font-related issues under the X Window System in recent versions of Red Hat Linux. At the present time, there are two font subsystems, each with different characteristics: - The original (15+ year old) subsystem is referred to as the "core X font subsystem". Fonts rendered by this subsystem are not anti-aliased, are handled by the X server, and have names like: -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--10-100-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1 The newer font subsystem is known as "fontconfig", and allows applications direct access to the font files. Fontconfig is often used along with the "Xft" library, which allows applications to render fontconfig fonts to the screen with antialiasing. Fontconfig uses more human-friendly names like: Luxi Sans-10 Over time, fontconfig/Xft will replace the core X font subsystem. At the present time, applications using the Qt 3 or GTK 2 toolkits (which would include KDE and GNOME applications) use the fontconfig and Xft font subsystem; most everything else uses the core X fonts. In the future, Red Hat may support only fontconfig/Xft in place of the XFS font server as the default local font access method. NOTE: Two exceptions to the font subsystem usage outlined above are OpenOffice.org (which uses its own font rendering technology), and Mozilla (which uses fontconfig, but not GTK 2). If you wish to add new fonts to your Red Hat Linux 9 system, you must be aware that the steps necessary depend on which font subsystem is to use the new fonts. For the core X font subsystem, you must: 1. Create the /usr/share/fonts/local/ directory (if it doesn't already exist): mkdir /usr/share/fonts/local/ If you had to create /usr/share/fonts/local/, you must then add it to the X font server (xfs) path: chkfontpath --add /usr/share/fonts/local/ 2. Copy the new font file into /usr/share/fonts/local/ 3. Update the font information by issuing the following command: ttmkfdir -d /usr/share/fonts/local/ -o /usr/share/fonts/local/fonts.scale 4. Reload the xfs font server using the following command: service xfs reload Adding new fonts to the fontconfig font subsystem is more straightforward; the new font file only needs to be copied into the /usr/share/fonts/ directory (individual users can modify their personal font configuration by copying the font file into the ~/.fonts/ directory). After the new font has been copied, use fc-cache to update the font information cache: fc-cache <directory> (Where <directory> would be either the /usr/share/fonts/ or ~/.fonts/ directories.) Individual users may also install fonts graphically, by browsing fonts:/// in Nautilus, and dragging the new font files there. NOTE: If the font filename ends with ".gz", it has been compressed with gzip, and must be decompressed (with the gunzip command) before the fontconfig font subsystem can use the font. o Due to the transition to the new font system based on fontconfig/Xft, GTK+ 1.2 applications are not affected by any changes made via the Font Preferences dialog. For these applications, a font can be configured by adding the following lines to the file ~/.gtkrc.mine: style "user-font" { fontset = "<font-specification>" } widget_class "*" style "user-font" (Where <font-specification> represents a font specification in the style used by traditional X applications, such as "-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*".) o New features in XFree86 include: - Xcursor - New mouse cursor code, allowing color, antialiased, alpha blended (translucency), animated, themeable, multi-size mouse pointers to be used. - ATI Radeon 9000, 9100, FireGL 8700, 8800 3D/2D/Xv support is now available. ATI Radeon 9500 Pro and 9700 Pro, as well as ATI FireGL X1 and Z1 are now supported 2D-only. Support for over 30 additional ATI Rage 128 chipsets have been added to this release, which should cover all existing Rage 128 chipsets now. - Intel i845, i852, i855, and i865 integrated video support (2D/3D/Xvideo), and improved Intel i830 video support. The Intel video driver has been completely restructured and largely rewritten to be much more robust, and support more hardware. Many bugs have been fixed, as well as many workarounds for broken laptop and motherboard BIOSs that limit memory to 1Mb. - New support for NVIDIA GeForce 4, nForce, GeForce 2 Go, and various other NVIDIA hardware. Also, the nv driver has been enhanced to attempt to autodetect unknown NVIDIA chips that aren't officially supported, but can probably be coaxed to work anyway (albeit not officially supported) by treating them similarly to one of the other supported chips in the same family. The nv driver, as in previous releases, remains 2D only. - At the time these release notes were finalized, NVIDIA's binary-only accelerated 3D drivers are not currently compatible with Red Hat Linux 9. NVIDIA is aware of the problem; watch the NVIDIA website for updates regarding this situation. - Updated Savage driver which supports the newest Savage video chipsets, and fixes various bugs. - A brand new driver for the National Semiconductor Geode chipset, nsc, is provided. - Many other video driver updates and improvements have been made. - Many new input drivers including fpit, palmax, ur98 and others have been added. o By default, the Sendmail mail transport agent (MTA) does not accept network connections from any host other than the local computer. If you want to configure Sendmail as a server for other clients, you must edit /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and change the DAEMON_OPTIONS line to also listen on network devices (or comment out this option entirely using the dnl comment delimiter). You must then regenerate /etc/mail/sendmail.cf by running the following command (as root): make -C /etc/mail Note that you must have the sendmail-cf package installed for this to work. o CUPS is now the default print spooler, and redhat-config-printer is the recommended tool for configuring it. It may be launched from the System Settings menu, using the Printing menu entry. LPRng is still provided, and upgrades from previous installations using LPRng will continue to use it. o GNOME Print Manager, a simple graphical print queue management tool, is now included. It may be launched from the System Tools menu, using the Print Manager menu entry. In addition, when a print job is in the queue, an icon will appear in the panel's system notification area. o Red Hat Linux 9 includes the Native POSIX Thread Library (NPTL), a new implementation of POSIX threads for Linux. This library provides performance improvements and increased scalability for i686 or better processors. This thread library is designed to be binary compatible with the old LinuxThreads implementation; however, applications that rely on the places where the LinuxThreads implementation deviates from the POSIX standard will need to be fixed. Notable differences include: - Signal handling has changed from per-thread signal handling to POSIX process signal handling. - getpid() returns the same value in all threads. - Thread handlers registered with pthread_atfork are not run if vfork() is used - no manager thread Applications that are known to have problems using NPTL include: - Sun JRE prior to version 1.4.1 - IBM JRE If an application does not work properly with NPTL, it can be run using the old LinuxThreads implementation by setting the following environment variable: LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=<kernel-version> The following versions are available: - 2.4.1 - Linuxthreads with floating stacks - 2.2.5 - Linuxthreads without floating stacks NPTL support for all dynamically-linked applications can be disabled by using the following boot-time option: nosysinfo o A new system message has been added to Red Hat Linux 9: application bug: <app-name>(<app-pid>) has SIGCHLD set to SIG_IGN but calls wait(). (see the NOTES section of 'man 2 wait'). Workaround activated. This message (which is displayed on the system console and/or in the system log files) indicates that the application is not completely standards compliant with respect to its handling of child processes. If you see this message, you should alert the application's developers. o Python has been compiled with UCS4 support (Unicode characters represented on 4 bytes) as opposed to UCS2. UCS4 allows one to represent characters outside of the Basic Multilingual Plane. Certain third-party libraries may stop working because of this change; recompiling these libraries should be sufficient to resolve the problem. Please note that "pure" python modules (whose code is written in python) or compiled modules that do not directly use Unicode are not affected by this change. o The fileutils, textutils, sh-utils, and stat packages have been replaced by the newer coreutils package. o The RPMs containing the Network Administration Tool have changed names and functions. The RPM redhat-config-network contains the tool's graphical user interface, while redhat-config-network-tui contains the tool itself (along with its text-based user interface). o Support for XHTML1 - the reformulation of HTML in XML - has been improved. This has been done by adding the xhtml1-dtd package, installing the DTDs in the system catalog, and adding native support in the libxml2 and xsltproc tools. o The redhat-switchmail command and package have been renamed redhat-switch-mail. The redhat-switchmail-gnome package has been renamed redhat-switch-mail-gnome. o The Oprofile system-wide profiler has been added to Red Hat Linux 9. OProfile is a programmer's tool for analyzing system performance, using special hardware built into many modern computers. Documentation for OProfile exists in the oprofile package; after installing Red Hat Linux 9, issue the command rpm -qd oprofile to obtain a listing of the available documentation. See the OProfile website at http://oprofile.sourceforge.net for more details. o GDB has been enhanced to allow debugging information for applications to be read from separate files. This makes it possible to extract debugging information from binaries and place them in a supplemental package. During the development of Red Hat Linux 9, "debuginfo" packages were generated for nearly every package by implementing special RPM macros. By default, the RPM macro configuration in Red Hat Linux 9 generates "debuginfo" packages. Red Hat has therefore removed that ACL support from the kernel for Red Hat Linux 9. Kernel engineers will continue work on improving the ACL support, which will be available in a future release. The attr and acl packages needed to support ACLs are still included to make it easier for users and developers who wish to test ACLs. Red Hat may, at our discretion, provide ACL support for this release of Red Hat Linux by means of an upgrade, if future testing demonstrates that the ACL support has sufficiently improved in quality. o The apic boot-time option allowing installation on systems with the Intel 440GX chipset has been removed because it caused a conflict with many newer systems: it caused SMM (System Management Mode) not to function, or to function incorrectly, causing installation on those systems to fail. Removing the apic boot-time option enables these newer systems to install successfully. A different workaround has been provided that allows at least some systems with the Intel 440GX chipset to boot; this workaround is automatically enabled, and requires no action on your part. If you have an Intel 440GX-based system and are unable to install Red Hat Linux 9 but a previous release of Red Hat Linux installs correctly, please file a bug report, and include the output (running on the previous release, of course) of the dmidecode program, run as root, with your bug report. Note however, that it will not be possible to install Red Hat Linux 9 at all. Systems with the 440GX chipset are supported only on a best-effort basis. Therefore, we welcome bug reports regarding systems with the 440GX chipset, but may or may not be able to resolve them. o The kernel support for the new NPTL feature changes several internal kernel programming interfaces significantly. As a result, several external kernel modules may not compile without modifications to match the new interfaces. Examples currently include the NVIDIA and ATI 3D modules, as well as any other modules that use kernel threads and/or signals. -- Charles R. Hi gang, ACPI is FINALLY compiled into Mandrake's kernel; but I'm having a hitch. While the kernel will boot with acpi enabled every now and again, most times it gets to a point where keventd is called for and the kernel message is that it hasn't started yet. Any ideas what on earth might be happening? I'm going to the acpi list as well, but I'd see if any of you linux laptop users have had this problem (there are google hits for this problem, but I'm hitting a dead end there). Wes

Eureka! I can't take credit for finding the fix, my co-worker found it on Usenet via google groups... The temporary solution was to export LANG=en_US the permanent solution is to edit /etc/sysconfig/i18n to make it permanent. I hope this helps others... Weird garbage characters in info/man

I just created a RH 8.0 box for testing and when I go into info, there's garbage characters all over the place. Here's an example from the "info rpm" page... rpm {âEURâEURq|âEURâEURâEURâEURquery} [selectâEURâEURoptions] [queryâEURâEURoptions] I'm connected to the box vis SSH using teh "F-Secure SSH" client for windows. I've never had an issue with any other box. It's almost like some library or character set didn't get installed... Thanks, Tim.

add memory, loose sound?

I just added 128 MB of memory to my Dell Optiplex GX1, and now my sound card (on motherboard CS 4236) is no longer recognized. It's possible that I did something bad to the motherboard when inserting the memory cards. Or, is there any way that adding memory (now 128 + 128 + 64) could disable the sound? TIA, Bill

workshop on hacking/free software

Hi all, I will be facilitating a workshop at WPI on Saturday on hacking and the free software movement. It will be held as part of a conference on "tools and alternatives," so we will be introducing free software (to an audience which will not necessarily be that technically-oriented; the conference will have a broader focus than just computers) as an alternative to relying on restrictive commercial software. I am looking for someone to co-facilitate, so if anyone on here would like to do that or just has ideas on ways to convey our message and make the workshop interesting and interactive, then let me know. Video-Out

Hi everyone, First an iPAQ update, it's still running Linux, and I'm learning much about /proc (on a handheld.....weird) since I had to fix APM when I ran down the battery all the way. I LIKE it! Writing to my ext2 formatted mm-card is a bit slow (so I boot with a different kernel for software installs :-) ). Thanks for your help in getting it converted! Anyway, the question the day is this: My laptop has got a composite video-out in it. Is there any way to enable this in linux? I've seen some hints of this on the web, but if any of you have some expertise in this area it'd be great. Wes

rpm's for kernel modules?

I've dabbled in making rpm's from tar distributions a bit -- just enough to get a flavor of rpm building. One of the more challenging (frustrating?) rpm tasks is building an rpm for a kernel module. (Or maybe the tar/make package I'm starting from is just not well-designed.) Since the build can be kernel-specific, it's not even clear if building binary rpm's is worth it. Maybe a better idea is to concentrate on making the source rpm easily buildable so that the end user can generate an installation-specific binary rpm and get the benefit of rpm's over tar/make installations. Or, maybe it's not worth rpm's at all for kernel modules. Anyone have opinions on this? TIA, Bill

reaction-diffusion program

I'm trying to run a reaction-diffusion modeling program. Below is the link to the tarball. I was able to install it after editing the makefile (added -LX11R6 to the LIBS section, per generic instructions I found on a google search for the error message I got when make failed.) Here's the current problem: When I try to run the program with the sample parameters given in the readme.txt, I get the error message, "bad status from XAllocColorCells Segmentation fault" Note: I get occasional segmentation faults, possibly due to a flaky power supply. Those seem to be less frequent since I vacuumed the dust and cat hair out of the box. Here's a link to the tarball, in case anyone has the time or inclination to mess with it and/or offer advice. shared calendar (web-based)?

I have some guys I work with who would like to be able to use a web-based tool to help schedule ping-pong games. Part of the requirement is that the players don't always have a partner and they would like to advertise available times so that someone else is encouraged to arrange a match with them. I already have an old web calendar program, which works, but I'm not very enthusiastic about it. Does anyone have a recommendation of a web tool that will work? FYI, I'm running Red Hat 8.0. It turned out that there was a file that was a soft link to another in that directory. I guess that that confused windows. Samba shares

I have a directory which has been shared out using samba. I now need to move some of those files including subdirectories to a windows box running windows 2000 server. From the windows box I can copy files from the samba share but the subdirectories on the samba share fail to copy. Is this a samba issue or a winblows issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I have sort-of got this by setting the shell to sftp-server. bizarre, I know, but it works, and a copy of /bin/true does not. in both the real and chroot'ed /etc/passwd's I set the shell to the full path to sftp-server, and sftp works, ssh does not. ssh actually connects and will sit there until you type something, but as soon as you type anything sftp-server says "what is this rubbish?" and promptly hangs up on you. I don't have any real shell, or any other binary besides sftp-server in my chroot tree, and even though users can upload their own, they cannot execute it because their shell is only sftp-server, which is not a shell and cannot execute anything. I hope it doesn't have any cases where it could execute any external program like ls (I know it doesn't need ls specifically, just as an example the way ftpd often uses a ls binary in the chroot path). otherwise a person might be able to upload a shell named <whatever sftp-server might exec> this is OpenSSH 3.5p1 with chroot patch, on SCO Open Server 5.0.6 ------------ Actually it does. I tried /bin/false and it fails to setup the ssh connection properly. SPARC and modems...

I have a SPARCstation 10 with RH 6.2 loaded. I am trying to get it configured as an Internet gateway, but the big hurdle I am trying to jump over right now is the modem communication. I have checked the PROM settings and they match what I am using minicom with: 57600-8N1. (I am trying to use minicom to debug serial connection with the modem.) When I send commands to the modem, I see the modem is getting information, but it doesn't look like the modem is responding. I don't see an OK reply, much less any other sign of life... The modem in question is a Zoom 56k (it is the one I usually use to connect to the 'Net with, and it has worked with Linux and my ISP flawlessly in the recent past). Once I get past this, then I can look at making sure PPP works (which I anticipate to be a relatively minor ordeal, since I have a pretty good idea what to do), and then firewall stuff. While I think of it, would anyone know of any distributions with more-recent SPARC support? I'd like to see 2.4.x kernels with iptable support, as well as more up-to-date tools, but seeing as this beastie is on the "slow" side, recompiling everything myself would be tantamount to torture.... 8( Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Non Linux mozilla issue

Here at MW we are blessed with Solaris workstations in addition to Linux. On Solaris 8 we have been unable to get the binary version from mozilla.org to run. It dies silently trying to load gtk. I compiled and installed gtk from gtk.org to no avail. Anyone run into this? Have any hints? Meeting over the Access Grid?

As a few of you may already know, WPI has just recently installed an Access Grid Node. For those of you who have never heard of the Access Grid project, it's a completely immersive video conferencing system - like traditional videoconferencing, but arranged such that the technology portion becomes invisible, and you can converse with others as if they were in the same room. More details at http://www.accessgrid.org/ My idea was that if we could find a couple of remote sites with people who might be interested in joining us, we could have a meeting over the Access Grid. A list of other Access Grid sites is up at http://www-fp.mcs.anl.gov/fl/accessgrid/nodes.htm and includes BU at least. REMINDER: Upcoming LAN Party !!

HI Everybody, The next WLUG meeting will be held this coming Wednesday, February 19th, 2003 in a different location. The meeting room will be AK233 (Atwater Kent room 233). Please refer to the Wlug Meetings...Directions link for directions to this room. The building is right next to Salisbury Labs on the WPI campus. Please note the earlier start time of 6:00 PM ! At this meeting, we'll be having a LAN party ! This is WLUG's first LAN party so I'm curious to see what people bring. You'll need to bring your network gear (hubs, switches, cables) and a laptop or desktop machine with networking enabled. We'll interconnect all of the machines to create one big WLUG LAN. I'll bring my PLIP cable for the masochists in the crowd. This network most likely will *not* have access to the Internet (but we'll see what we can do). On this LAN, all sorts of activities could take place, such as multiplayer games, network security scans, attempts to (non-destructively!) crack another persons system to teach them about their security weaknesses, and more. Its really up to all of you and your imaginations as to what we can do with this type of setup. I'll even entertain doing a couple of network based Linux installations if folks want that. If people need help configuring their systems for networking, that help will be available. I'll also be available to do a demonstration of VNC for those interested. The possibilities are really endless. Due to the amount of time to setup such a LAN and still have time to have fun with it, I've extended the time of the WLUG meeting from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM (note earlier start time!). I'd suspect that because the thing came with windows drivers that it looks close enough to an MSDOS filesystem that windows won't scream so much, but when it comes to actually interacting with the filesystem/toc on the device it's nothing like that at all... Can you fdisk the device and format it? Hi everybody, My brother-in-law just obtained a Sony floppy disk memory stick adapter (MSAC-FD2MA). You put a memory stick into this "thing" which then plugs into the floppy drive. He put it into the floppy drive and it mounted OK, but 'df' thinks the device is full when indeed its empty. There was a Windows driver supplied with it also. Attempts to copy files to it while mounted failed with errors indicative of no remaining space. Does anybody know anything about this little toy? I can't find anything on the net, but I'll keep looking. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to figure out and make work with Linux, if one were so inclined. Thanks! Getting OpenOffice, ODBC and MySQL to play Nice

Most of you may already have heard of this (especially if you watch Slashdot), but it's worth posting for those that don't: http://www.linuxworld.com/2003/0207.barr.html Here, the author talks about getting OpenOffice.org, ODBC and MySQL working together (on Red Hat 8.0)... It looks like the first of two articles; the first explains what he did, the errors that resulted, and what he did to get around it. Next week, he's supposed to talk about using his new-found functionality, and whether it was worth the effort. FWIW, he said that he started using a how-to by John McCreesh, but there were enough differences between RH 7.3 and RH8.0 that it was almost useless. The article is certainly worth reading. qmail - several domain!

Hi all, I've got my qmail server run so well, it's all nice. Ups, I've got something that bother me alyways! I have several domains hosted in my server where my qmail server running on too, The mail problem is, If somebody send me a message where the address is one of the my listed domain in my server, then.. if I read the mail from one of the available account from my server, here,. I'll receive all the email that attach to my username, so all my email address from the available domain are received in on of the account that I use to open the mail. So, how can I open one of my email address and I just receive the mail that attach to the address where I mean to ? Thanks Man.

floppy question

I hope you guys don't mind a hardware-related question... The short of it is, if a floppy controller appears dead, short of getting a new motherboard how do I get a floppy drive to work on that system? I recently upgraded my home computer so that I could play the new game I got for Christmas... So, the usual course of events is to play hand-me-down computer parts in my family, so my old computer would go to upgrade my mother's computer (admittedly a Windows98 box, used for Juno email/web and playing Solitaire... so no heavy usage). My old box is old in computer terms, but it's a heck of a lot faster than the P200 that my mother currently has. I rarely used my floppy drive (the last time prior to taking that box down was a few months prior). When transferring files from my old box to my new computer, I needed to run a Windows app off of a floppy - and discovered that the floppy drive didn't work on my old box. I tried swapping the 3.5" floppy drive out for another one that I had lying around, and that one didn't work either... I also tried swapping out the floppy cables, and that didn't work. BIOS sees the 3.5" floppy drive, but the box won't boot off of a boot floppy (that is readable on other computers) or read anything off of the floppy drive (makes nasty searching sounds) when in Windows... So, my guess is that the floppy drive controller on the motherboard isn't working... My mother is adamant that she needs a working floppy drive (old files saved, and so she can transfer stuff from work to home and back). I'd really like to give her my old box for a nice CPU/RAM upgrade, but unless I can get it to use a 3.5" floppy drive, she won't take it... Any suggestions as to how I can get a floppy drive to work on my old box? Or am I just out of luck for upgrading her with my old box? -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. Aramico, I'm taking the guess that your users are using pop3 to access their email. If you set their shell to /bin/false this will allow them to access email and ftp, but they won't be able to login. Virtual Hosting

Hello All: I am experiencing a weird problem with Name based virtual hosting with apache. I don't know if I am doing this correctly. The webserver is behind a firewall that is NATing traffic to it. I have three domain names, example: domain1.com, domain2.com, and domain3.com. I have the registrar of the domains forwarded to my external ip (24.31.xx.xx). The webserver's ip is 192.168.2.50. This is what the http.conf file looks like: NameVirtualHost 192.168.2.50 <VirtualHost 192.168.2.50> ServerName www.domain1.com ServerAdmin wilsan816(a)yahoo.com DocumentRoot /home/domain1/www </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 192.168.2.50> ServerName www.domain2.com ServerAdmin wilsan816(a)yahoo.com DocumentRoot /home/domain2/www </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost 192.168.2.50> ServerName www.domain3.com ServerAdmin wilsan816(a)yahoo.com DocumentRoot /home/domain3/www </VirtualHost> Somehow the virtual hosting is not working. The registrar where the domains are registered doesn't offer free "Domain Masking" (when the domain name stays on the browser' address bar). I don't know if this is why I am having this problem. Howdy, y'all. I'm just inches away from using my wikkid new Fujitsu notebook as a DVD player. After solving the seemingly difficult problems of playing a movie in the first place (xine), playing an encrypted DVD (libdvdcss), getting hardware scaling to work on my ATI (gatos), and enabling the S-video output (atitvout), I'm left with the final daunting challenge: Turning off the #!$@ screen saver! I've tried the following (in this order): setterm -blank 0 setterm -powersave off setterm -powerdown 0 xset s off xset s noblank xset -dpms apm -i (a long shot, which is not compiled in my version) Still my video goes out every 5 minutes. WTF? I don't who or what is turning off my screen, and for what motive. But their treachery must be stopped! Surely someone on this list has the knowledge I need to restore justice. The thing that I want is, the visitor can only access my html file, so if they want to connect to another page where the location is the same, it must be a password asked for this. My point is, can I defined *.* as protected files where the index.html, fly.jpg are not inlcluded in *.* definition. iPAQ update

OK, I had a great time at the meeting on Wednesday, just let me say that first off. The great thing about linux is community, and WLUG certainly has that.... Now, at this moment I'm listening to a Nickel Creek .ogg on my iPAQ using Opie's media play w/ libvorbis. It's a little unstable, but once I get a decent flash card I'll finally be able to take my music files with me.... It took a while to get to this point. I disliked wiki before, now I positively HATE it (and I think Linux Magazine is on drugs for liking it so much). Stuff is just, missing - like how to make sure your iPAQ has dns entries by copying one file.....arrrgh! I could ssh in right away, and on usb, that was the easy part; but for some reason iptables weren't working at first and I had to wipe them and start over, now I've got dns AND iptables forwarding my packets, and the ipaq is on the internet (no, I'm not writing this e-mail on it, an iPAQ, no keyboard, remember?). The only problems I have are with the todolist (it won't start), and qtopia desktop (it won't link). The todolist is missing a library, which I'll find, but the syncing issue is a pain, it just won't see it. Brad's been great and he think going up to opie unstable may solve the issue, we'll see (don't you just love debian users? They say, "Go use unstable" as if that's just what people do...). Now, when I get a tape-player or mp3 input in a car stereo I can finally ask for that microdrive for Christmas! Thanks again! Wes

Hi gang, I'm looking forward to the 15th of January so I can finally say good-bye to Brother Bill on my iPAQ. I got a couple of questions..... Has anyone used the perl-script that syncs the ipaq and evolution? Other then the notorious, "Don't run this while Evolution is open" are there any other problems? Which CF wireless nics work with linux on the iPAQ. I'm seriously thinking that I'm going to get the cf-plus expansion pack and a wireless nic for my iPAQ (linux's true strength is networking, right?). So which one's work? And, sadly, how easy is it to reverse the process? On the off-chance that I can't stand OPIE as a working environment. I've read the howto, how hard is it in "real life." It might be fun to invite some of the people from the compaq lab to the meeting if anyone who worked on ipaq linux is based in the Worcester area.... SCSI question.

I know there are some SCSI guru's on this list. One of my out of warranty drives died. (bad sectors) I'm replacing it. The old drive was SCSI-2 Wide(80pin). The SCSI interface listed in /proc/pci is: SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AHA-2940U/UW/D / AIC-7881U (rev 1). Will a Ultra160 80pin drive work? I'm pretty sure it does, just looking for verification. Anyone know for sure? Well, If you've got a "winmodem" check a few places like http://www.linmodems.org/ also, google is your friend in this case. If you've got an internal hardware modem, it's been my experience that in order for it to work at all, the port/IRQ settings in your bios have to exactly match the ones postulated in the setserial documentation... /dev/ttys0 (COM1), port 0x3f8, irq 4 /dev/ttys1 (COM2), port 0x2f8, irq 3 /dev/ttys2 (COM3), port 0x3e8, irq 4 /dev/ttys3 (COM4), port 0x2e8, irq 3 As for the broadband, do you have an external broadband modem connected to your machine via ethernet or an onboard broadband adapter? (I'm going on the premise that you've got the former... if you don't you'll have to look around for drivers that'll support the onboard broadband adapter) For your ethernet not working, I'd first check to see that the card was recognized. The best place to start is to see if the drivers been loaded. executing the "lsmod" command (as root) will give you a listing of all the loaded drivers... [root@medusa proc]# lsmod Module Size Used by Not tainted nls_iso8859-1 3488 0 (autoclean) 3c59x 28520 1 ... (this listing could be quite long) You should see something like the 3c59x (if you've got a 3com card) Also, you might want to check the Suse hardware errata to make sure that your cards totally supported. In this day an age, only rather exotic hardware isn't fully supported... Another place to look is /proc/interrupt aka "cat /proc/interrupt" (once again as root) this will give you a listing of all the devices linux sees on the machine. If you don't see your ethernet card listed, you probably have some sort of conflict. I hope this helps... Suse Linux: Internet access

I recently installed Suse Linux on my Pentium III, 600 mHz computer that had Windows XP installed previously. Linux seems to work OK, except that I can't access my cable modem or dial-up modem from it. If I want to go to the internet, I have to go via windows. I got this machine from my son-in-law, and it has never printed in either windows or Linux. I have "properly" installed my deskjet 932 printer, it looks to be installed ok, but when I try to print, the printer never gets the data that the computer supposedly sends to it. Any help I can get from you folks would be greatly appreciated. Hi Andy, I was hoping that by adding a second nic card that plugs into my router I could somehow configure the webserver to use one nic and the vpn to use the other without the 2 cards knowing about each other. I have gotten both vpn's coexisting nicely with each other. I can now connect to my desktop at work via vnc. It looks like I can now remove my windows partition...YEA! Now for my final issue. I have not been able to configure my cisco vpn to allow me access to my local lan when connected the vpn is running. This is proving to be most inconvenient because I do have a web server running that is accessable to the outside world. Unfortunately the webserver is unavailable when the vpn is activated. I am thinking that if I add a second nic card to the box and configure it properly that I should be able to have one card handle the webserver traffic and the other card will handle the vpn traffic. Thanx everyone for the advice on Linux for the PPC. I ended up going with Debian, and, guided by the advice of the installation docs that come with their dist. for PPC, I had a very successful (lacking sound, but i was told to expect that, besides it's a server) installation on the G4 Mac. Now, the only other tweak I have a burning desire to make to this box is to configure the kernel to use SMP for the dual 500Mhz processors. From what I've heard, it should only be using the first one right now, and that I have to rebuild the kernel with SMP support. Sound right? Hi gang, Well, with the 0% financianing out there I'm seriously considering dumping my current notebook and taking all my Christmas cash to get a machine that works better with linux. I'm sick of this HP buggy BIOS that won't let linux read the thermal or battery data, even with acpi, so this'll go back to winXP for my wife, we'll dump the desktop completely, and I'll get the new machine. My question is, what's known to work with Linux. Are Toshiba's friendly? I'm not touching a compaq with a 10 foot pole, and does anyone have an HP laptop that is fully functional with linux? What about the latest Dells? Or even, gasp GATEWAY???? I checked out linux on laptops, but most of the models weren't even close so I figured I'd ask all of you... Wes

Color matching scanned photos vs. printed output

Hi Everybody, I've been playing with my new toy, an Epson 1660 Photo scanner, which works very nicely with Linux. I have noticed that photos that I scan in and then print don't look the same as the original. I am using Xsane, Gimp-Print, and CUPS. If it matters, the photo is 4x6 inches, scanned at 400 DPI, and printed in 1440x720 high quallity mode. The photo was originally printed from my 3 Mpixel digital camera (2160x1440 pixels), so I believe I've used a more than sufficient DPI when scanning. I suspect the problem is that neither the scanner nor the printer is perfect, and that the cumulative effects of the transfer functions (scanner to computer to monitor to computer to printer) are causing this. Its actually worse if I let Xsane compensate for me with its automatic adjustments of gamma, brightness, and contrast. Adjusting the image on my monitor screen probably isn't going to help much since my monitor isn't perfect, nor is there any guarantee that I have it properly adjusted. Is there any good way, other than trial and error, to fix this? Would generating some simple test patterns help in making the proper adjustments? Toshiba Laptop?

Hi gang, What's your collective opinion of Toshiba laptops? Circuit City has got a decent machine (Satellite 1415-s173) for $999 and they actually let me boot Knoppix on it to check out hardware support (everything worked). The only thing I'm wondering about is the battery. MY HP laptop doesn't let Linux read the battery info with either apm or acpi, and I think this is a function of an incredibly bad bios implementation. The demo models at Circuit City didn't have batteries, so I had no way of checking this bug out on that brand. Does anyone have experience with a Toshiba laptop that has an acpi bios? Can you relate your experience to me? Wes

Have you considered a Apple iBook or Powerbook? An iBook runs for about $1000 and PB's $2000. Compared to my Dell Laptop for work.. Apple has some nice hardware. I have an iBook 500mhz.. I was shocked how well Yellow Dog Linux ran on it. The speed difference over Mac OS X was very noticable. I also tried Mandrake PPC linux on it, not very impressed with it. Unfortunetly, the 20 gig drive I placed in the iBook fried, so all I have now is Mac OS X. The 10 gigs is too tight for a dual system. I'm having a hard time converting the wife to linux.<G> A buddy down in CT has a Powerbook running Yellow Dog also, only issue is the ATI video is not fully supported yet. just throwing my 2 cents in.. You mean not close to working with Linux? I was looking for a simple machine (ie. more powerful than my desktop P-200 was my minimum requirement) that would be ultra portable. I was looking for something uber-small and uber-light that I'd carry around with me everywhere because it was so uber-small and uber-light. I decided on a Fujitsu Lifebook P-2000, and it was the best purchasing descision of my life. I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 that works perfectly under Linux. I can suspend and resume it just fine, which impresses a lot of folks since they can't even do that under Windows. The 8200 is the current model; you can find 8000's and 8100's for reasonable money on eBay. It's a big, clunky-looking machine, but the internals are well done, it's very fast, and it has a very nice screen (1400x1050 or 1600x1200; none of this silly 1024x768 on a 15" screen). It can also take two batteries. I'd actually go for an 8000 rather than an 8200 if you want long battery life; the slower processors (mine is 700 MHz) make for much longer battery life. I get 5 hours from a 2700 and 3800 mAH battery; you can buy 4400 mAH batteries now, which should give about 7 hours of battery life. There are lots of other configuration options; you can get a combo DVD/CDRW drive, or two optical drives, if you like. I'm a big fan of Dells and have run Linux on a few Inspiron and Latitude models (my current laptop is an Inspiron 8000). Every piece of hardware in it was supported out of the box by Mandrake: ATi video card, Maestro3 sound, EEPro100 onboard ethernet, DVD drive, and winmodem, which is of the Lucent variety, though I never bothered to set it up as I don't have any dial-up accounts. They're a bit more pricey than what you can find in a clearance at a store, but they're very customizable for a laptop (on Dell's web site), and that made it worth it to me. My $0.02. Brian J. Both my video card and the onboard sound card are assigned to IRQ11, in both windows and linux. Device Manager and KDE Control Center say that there's no conflict. Does this make sense? Thanks in advance, Greg

Thanks for all the help...It seems I may be locked out of my local lan while connected :( I now have a semi-minor issue to solve. When connected to the vpn I can use realplayer to listen to internet radio after configuring the necessary proxy server. I have not been able to configure xmms play the same links. I have gotten both vpn's coexisting nicely with each other. I can now connect to my desktop at work via vnc. It looks like I can now remove my windows partition...YEA! Now for my final issue. I have not been able to configure my cisco vpn to allow me access to my local lan when connected the vpn is running. This is proving to be most inconvenient because I do have a web server running that is accessable to the outside world. Unfortunately the webserver is unavailable when the vpn is activated. I am thinking that if I add a second nic card to the box and configure it properly that I should be able to have one card handle the webserver traffic and the other card will handle the vpn traffic. Hi gang, Well, I'm thinking about just going out and getting a zaurus for myself, I've seem them for around $330 as some places. Should I do this, or just convert my iPAQ as I planned? There are some features of the iPAQ that I like (like inviting attendees to meetings), but getting some sync-ability with Linux is just over the top for me.... encyclopedia

Hi all I wonder whether I have found a gap in availability of applications for Linux :-( Specifically, I have been looking for a CD encyclopedia which will run on a Linux box (in particular a couple I set up for my two grandkids). Wine does not seem to provide a work-around both because it does not seem to be happy with any CD encyclopedia and because it would require buying Win* to get the CD stuff installed (and neither computer is worth as much as Win* would cost). I tried searching for Linux + Encyclopedia but that just gives me encyclopedias about Linux. A search for CD + Encyclopedia gave a reasonable list but none runs under Linux (as you might expect, all run under Wintel and a few on Macs). Does anyone know of a general CD encyclopedia that one can use with Linux? doug PS The grandkids take to the linux boxes quite naturally. I showed the older one how to type "lpr -Plp3 filename" to print a file. He later reported that he tried it on his brother's box but, since it was a second computer and Q comes after P and 4 comes after 3 he used -Plp4 (obvious isn't it:-) ) and it worked! :-)

Thanks Charles, Resolving the issue in part 1 concerning my wifes vpn was resolved by upgrading the linksys firmware. After the upgrade IPSec passthrough was turned off and everything works well. vpn behind firewall

Happy Holidays to all, I have a 2 part question concerning my particular use of vpns. I have a home network behind a Linksys firewall/router and am technically incompetent when it comes to vpn's. Part 1: The company my wife works for has upgraded her vpn software and it no longer plays well with firewalls at the client end. I have an appointment with her tech support Thursday morning but would appreciate it if anyone could give me some clues or at least some intelligent questions to ask so that I might make this thing work. It is sometimes necessary to "help" the help desk in order that they can help you. :) Part 2: I am planning to fire up a vpn connection to my employer on Thursday for the first time. X-server minutiae

Now that I have X working again, some colors are different. The outline box that appears when opening a window in fvwm2 has changed from yellow to purple, which is nice because it's easier to see, but my cursor is very pale gray. Anyone know how to change a cursor color? Am I nuts to even think about messing with it? Greg

kernel saga continues

I managed to get my online connection working again. Just had to change "ippp0" to "ppp0" in my firewall config file. I was also able to make a lilo boot floppy from command line, and it worked, exept for my initial menu. I rebooted back and forth a few times between the two floppies, and they both seemed to be working, and then when I went into x-session, I had no mouse. WTF??? Why did I lose kernel support for other stuff when all I messed with was "sound"? Then I made the mistake of going into XF86Setup. Now, I can't get into x at all. Questions 1. Can anyone tell me where the problem is? (other than "user") 2. Is there someplace in make xconfig or make menuconfig to provide support for xfree? At one point, I got an error message about not being able to load a module when trying to get into x. 3. Would it make sense to go back to the distribution disks, remove and re-insall xfree? Thanks. Linux too much like windows?

I found this article while reading my daily dose of slashdot. It brings some questions to mind. Is linux becoming too much like windows? Does it need to in order to compete in the desktop business? One of my friends was commenting that for servers, linux is the best, however it just loses when it comes to the desktop market. What do you guys think about that? I'm not a gamer and primarily do systems administration work as well as php development and I love my redhat 8.0 with gnome2. What do others out there feel? kernel - Help!

I'm in windows right now, which is where I automatically boot to if I don't use the floppy. I only get a choice of boots with floppy. Tried recompiling the kernel with sound, added the lbn32(?) line to /etc/lilo and the cylinder error went away, but somehow I lost support for ipchains and lost the suse firewall. Also lost support for vfat. I went back into make xconfig and started messing around with ppp support, vfat and dos support. Got my vfat back ok. Also had to go in and re-edit /etc/rc.config and /etc/rc.config.d/firewall- somethingorother.config. I think I need to review my selections in those files. At first, I could dialup and as soon as it would connect, it would disconnect, and pppd would give error message 4, no support for ppp in kernel. I went back in and selected netfilter with ipchains support, and ppp with async support. Now it will connect and stay connected, but I can't send or receive anything (mail or web). Oh, and I removed the sound support from the kernel, but I'm still getting error messages about trying to load the sound modules. Let me know if I did something obvious. Meanwhile, I'll review what I did. Thanks, Greg

I just recently upgraded my hosting plan to include sub domains, shell access and a few other goodies. My original site had all of the images in an images directory. To avoid copying all of the images to each new sub domain/directory I created an images directory for each sub directory and ran ln *.* /path/to/sub/images from within the real images directory. This worked great but is it only a one shot deal? I.E. if I add another image to the main directory do I need to run ln again? Server is FreeBSD 4.7 with Apache/1.3.27 I didnt try hard linking the directories since my books say that you need to be root to do so but I think that is what I really needed. kernel questions

I'm trying to get oss sound modules compiled into kernel. make xconfig was easy enough to get through. instructions say to then make dep and make bzImage or bzlilo. 1. I get errors on this, because I'm above cylinder 1023 on my dual-boot drive. I boot linux from floppy with lilo. Error message suggests using lba32 option, but it doesn't say where or how to use it. How do I get around this? 2. Instructions say next to install the kernel. Is that done by typing make install? In addition to the make install that comes after make modules? (see below) 3. I haven't been able to create a lilo boot disk for awhile. I'm using Yast2 to configure boot mode, and it keeps telling me that my floppy is write protected and it can't access the boot sector. I've tried this with new floppies that have been formated with fdformat /dev/fd0. Thanks for any insight. Here are the instructions I'm looking at: > 1. The Package Chase

OK, I've been going along merrily with my SuSE 7.2 for about a year, and I just now ran into a problem that a lot of you folks must know all too well. Install a new program and it calls for a package you don't have. You've all seen the lists, I'm sure. I'm trying to install ecawave and ALSA 0.9, and I've had to install some gtk and gnome stuff, and I went to look at upgrading the whole gnome package. There's a list of more than 50 things to compile, and they must be done in the correct order. Do people actually do that? Is there any advantage of doing that over upgrading the whole distribution?

Has anyone ever used bioswriter or a similar utility to get your bios settings from CMOS? I'm trying to read it with bioswriter with little success as I'm not sure what to do with the image file. I'm wondering there is a way to hack this bios to let me turn "plug and play os" off, as I'm fairly certain it's on by default and the given interface is pretty limited. Or am I breaking the law to edit my bios settings.... on the computer I OWN. recording in linux

Someone asked about recording under linux recently, and I recall that several of us said we'd never been able to do it. I just did it. In alsamixer, space bar sets the channel you want to use for capture. (line in is a reasonable choice) Had to manually edit /etc/asound.conf to turn on the input gain and set the level to 10,10. It looks like this: element("Input Gain Switch",0,101,Switch2(on)) ; Voice 0 : Min 0 Max 15 ; Voice 1 : Min 0 Max 15 element("Input Gain Volume",0,200,Volume1(10,10))

Cross Compile Question

I'm trying to make a cross-compiler on an i386 linux box to a ppc darwin (OSX) box. I downloaded binutils, configured them with ./configure --target=powerpc-apple --prefix=/usr/local Build them, and installed them. Then I went and got gcc (with g++), configured it with: ./configure --target=powerpc-apple-darwin --prefix=/usr/local I also made a symlink from /usr/local/powerpc-apple -> /usr/local/powerpc-apple-darwin since it seemed to fix a problem in the gcc compile. When I try to build gcc, it goes for a minute or so, and then I get this towards the end: libbackend.a(varasm.o): In function `assemble_alias': /data/hughesm/tmp/gcc-3.1/gcc/varasm.c:5184: undefined reference to `ASM_OUTPUT_DEF' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [cc1] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/data/hughesm/tmp/gcc-3.1/gcc' make: *** [all-gcc] Error 2 I'm not really asking for the exact cause of the error... I'm just trying to figure out if I'm even going about this the correct way. The documentation on cross compiling is a bit sparse. It seems odd to me that the targets don't match (but there is no powerpc-apple-darwin in binutils, and no powerpc-apple in gcc) All that being said, I'm doing this so I can add my linux boxes to my OSX build farm. Linux on a dual headed mac

Hi all, I got a dual headed G4 sitting here that's just itching to be a linux box. I can get X up on the primary video card, but am having problems getting it to work on the secondary one. (I figure I should get that working, before I try to get them both working). Unfortunatly, I can't figure out how to get the second video card to work. I try specifying a busid in the XFree86Config-4 file. It seems to always be trying to use my primary card. Is there a way to get fb support on bootup on the second display? Primary card: Geforce2 MX with a 17" apple studio display using the Apple Display Connector (not the vga one) - PCI bus 0:16:0 Secondary card: ATI Radeon Q with a 19" generic monitor - PCI bus 0:20:0 Any ideas? capture card

Hi all, I'm really toying with the idea of picking up one of those $200 machines from walmart and rolling out my own pvr. If for no other reason than it would be a good hobby. However, I want it to be able to do the one useful thing that I can't do with digital cable, watch one show while taping another. My wife and I have one tv (and one converter box), and often have shows that conflict with one another (we flip coins in the metaphoical "who's there first" way). So, I assume that I need a capture card with the ability to tune digital signals, no problem. Are there any that work with Linux? THAT'S my problem. So, anyone know of a digital tv-capture/tuner card that works with Linux? Linux/document source control MS Word

Does anyone know of a logical way to allow users of MS Word to access a single document from a linux server that will manage source control on the document? These users are home users for a non-profit sports orginization creating a document for end users. These people will be editing this document via there home pc's. There is currently already a server they use for statistics and such, which is a Linux box. They must us MS Word as they are the most basic of basic users who can barely use PC's. I know there are commerical software(s) available or co-location sites to do this, but I was not sure if anyone had ever run across anything that is specfic to MS Word docs and document/source control management on Linux (or other OS's, Solaris, etc.) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Lightweight Linux installer

HI Everybody, The discussion about old used hardware got me to thinking about a recent experience. I was trying to put SuSE Linux 8.1 on a P90 with 32 MB of memory. SuSE was smart enough to jump into the ncurses installer instead of the fully graphical installer, but the installer was incredibly slow. No, not the part where the packages load slowly due to old, slow I/O devices, but the parts which ask the questions before the installation. This got me to wondering if there are any generic lightweight installers available for vintage hardware such as this. I don't see why I should be limited by a bloated installer when Linux itself works just fine on older hardware. FYI: I've got a few PC's laying around at home that I'd like to donate to the WLUG raffle or anyone else who thinks they can use one. These are by no means powerful machines, but could probably be used as a firewall or low end mail server. 2 - HP Vectra (I think XM's) Pentium 100 64 mb of memory sound, graphics, NIC one has a hard drive (1GB I think) 4x cd-rom ?? ** These used to be business desktops, but were retired a few years ago. 1 - Compaq Presario mini tower Pentium 75 64 mb of memory sound, graphics, NIC 850MB or 1GB hard drive 8x cd-rom ?? 13 or 14" color monitor All of these at one time or another were going to be re-built by me and donated to schools in my area, but work and my family took priority. I also have some programming and other computer related books that are anyone's for the taking as well. If anyone is interested, I'll can email more specific information after I invertory the stuff. If this sounds like some stuff that can be raffled off at the January meeting, I'd be willing to bring it all down. Matthew

Hi all, I've actually managed to get my iPAQ connected to my linux laptop using my usb cable....and I've even gotten some files off it and opened them up with OOo. All-in-all, I'm happy. But I would like to back up the address files and convert them into something Linux can use. What files does pocket-pc use to keep their addressbook data in? Wes

REMINDER: WLUG Meeting

At this meeting, we'll informally discuss the Linux news and events which took place over the year 2002. Let's take a look at how far Linux has come in the past year, and muse over where it will head during the next year. Look back through your old magazines, e-mails, and newsgroups and let's see how many different things we can remember about this past year and Linux. We will also hold a brainstorming session to get more details about upcoming WLUG meetings for the year 2003. After the meeting, we'll make our monthly pilgrimage to the Boynton Restaurant for some pizza and beer as we celebrate Linux and the holidays together. See ya later! Upcoming meetings

HI everybody, I like the idea of having a handhelds night, be they Zaurus, IPAQ, Palm, etc. I also would agree that January might be a good time for such a meeting. There seems to be a general consensus on this, so I'd like to propose that the January meeting will be the "Handhelds and Linux" meeting. I'll volunteer to bring my Palm IIIx and show how to sync it with Linux. Admittedly, that's not as cool as running Linux on the handheld itself, but hey, its one more thing to keep me away from Windows! I would like to hear from other volunteers who plan to bring their handheld devices so I can pencil you in. When I announce the meeting, I'd like to be able to say what types of devices will be discussed and demonstrated. That type of detail will draw people to the meeting. Note that Jon 'Maddog' Hall is scheduled to be our speaker at the February meeting. Maddog has come to WLUG meetings in the past and is an awesome speaker. You definitely do NOT want to miss this meeting! If we advertise this around the WPI campus and on the net, I don't see why we couldn't have a big crowd for this meeting. With regard to a possible LAN party, its not clear to me that we can pull it together just a few days before the meeting date (or am I wrong?), so should we plan on this for the March meeting? I propose that with all of the network gear and people's computers, we could accomodate the computer gamers as well as those who want security checks (nessus and the like), or even those who have never configured networking before and would like to give it a try. Given all of the above, that still leaves our December meeting open. What do folks think we can pull together in the next few days? badblocks on ext3 fs

I've located the cause of weekly SCSI errors that I asked about a little while ago -- a backup program reads a file (not an important one) which has bad blocks. The file is on an ext3 file systems. My question is, do I use "e2fsck -c" to fix the problem? I'm under the impression that ext3 filesystems are just ext2 with journalling added, so that ext2 tools are the right ones to use. TIA, Bill

Question on making a CD from a VHS...

Never having before played with music, etc., on a computer, I'm womndering if anyone hasd done this sort of thing before... I'm looking to take the music from a VHS tape and produce a CD for my wife for Christmas. Also, making a DVD of the VHS would be handy too. The issue here is that the VHS player isn't going to last forever, nor is the tape, and the DVD isn't available (nor is the soundtrack). Any suggestions for doing this? Steve

Have you made sure that there will be enough power to accomodate this many computers. I've had to deal with this problem many times before and I know that both the Odeum and Riley Commons can support up to 50 computers. As to what, well I must confess, I have never seen what the attraction is to playing computer games. I have brought up the possibility, as the last "Boynton meeting", of attracting the "technology" types from area schools (and the folks they hang out with) for an install fest and topical discussions revolving around getting Linux into the hands of students and family as well as the topic of running Linux on all the older PCs that many schools already have. My guess is that taking this route, instead of a night of games, would not only serve to help the communities in which we live, but also bolster WLUG's standing in central MA and probably double our membership as well... Here is what I suggest. We co-sponsor this with the WPI Game Development Club. The GDC holds LAN parties often and would help us a great deal with the planning of this. I think its a great idea, having helped with many of the GDC LAN parties myself (I'm a GDC executive). For the installfest part, I say we charge nothing, unless the person doesn't have the distro on CD, in which case we can ask for a couple bucks to cover the cost of the CD's (since most distro's take up like 5 CD's now anyway). However, for the LAN party part, the way that the GDC usually does it is, $3 for GDC members, $5 for WPI students, and $7 for Consortium students, and $10 for everyone else. Now since WLUG is a WPI organization, we could say, $3 for WLUG / WPILA members and $5 for everyone else. I think that is a very fair price. As for placed to hold it. WPI would be more than happy to hold it. We really have two choices in the matter, Riley Commons, which is easy to get, but not very large. Or we can try and get the Odeum, which is much more tricky, but much larger and more power. Any WPI Alumni or current student can book either of these (though I've heard that Alumni have a better change of getting the Odeum than a student does). The link should be an isolated link just internally for the LAN party. If we want an outside link for the install fest portion, we will have to talk to netops and see what they can do. Right now, every machine on the WPI campus has to be registered for security reasons. They might be able to help us out with something. If we decided to turn this into more than a LAN party, I say we turn it into a series of small demos / tutorials kinda thing. We could host some beginner tutorials, like a basic recompiling of the kernel, a desktop setup, stuff like that. We could also hold more advanced tutorials such as iptables, security, clustering, stuff like that. I think that we should have the installfest go for like the first 3 hours, along with a LAN party, and then turn over to tutorials and workshops, maybe offering a couple at the same time to give people a choice. I'd really like to do something like this. As for time frame... GDC LAN parties usually last from around 6pm to whenever everyone leaves, which has been as late as 3am the next day. Now for this, I would say that something like 5-midnight, or something similiar would work well, giving us enough time for both the installfest and the workshops / tutorials. Possible Printer discussion

HI everybody, If it were possible for me to get a person to speak to WLUG regarding printers and printer drivers, would that be of interest? (Hint: say "yes"). I'm thinking of a programmer's talk here, not a user level talk. For example, what does the skeleton of a printer driver look like? What functions must it provide to user level software, and what does it pass to a queueing system or perhaps directly to the printer? How are JPG pictures converted to dots of ink that appear on your printer paper? What's the deal with these different dithering algorithms? What is dithering, and why do it? These are just some ideas to get the creative juices flowing. Let me know what topics in this realm would be of interest at a future WLUG meeting. hi all, I have a domain(hasdemir.com) hosted on linux by a web hosting company. Nowadays many emails that I have sent, neither bounce back or be received by the other company. I would be very interested in some security based presentations. I think setting up some boxes for "security" testing would be really cool. I'd be willing to donate my box to the cause. I'd also like to see a tutorial on iptables, cause they are a very usual thing. I sent out a list of potential topics last month, but I know that there are a zilliion interesting things happening in the Linux world that could be discussed at a WLUG meeting. The meeting need not be discussion based, either! Although Kinnicutt Hall lends itself well to this type of meeting, we do have access to other rooms on campus. People have tossed out ideas such as these: o build a network for multiplayer Linux games o build a network to see if WLUG crackers can break into your system (not to destroy it, but to teach you what to fix to secure your system) o more live demos! The group exists to meet your needs, so please, state your needs! I can't arrange a meeting to your liking if I get no feedback on what you want to see at future WLUG meetings. More importantly, I'd like to see more and different people volunteer to do the presentations or to run a live demo. If you look back at the last year of WLUG meetings, you'll see the same names many times. While I'm *quite* happy that these folks continue to volunteer, I'd like to see others jump in also. Finally, if anybody has feedback regarding the last meeting and why it lacked attendees, please bring it up on the list so we can all discuss it. Without such candid discussions, WLUG cannot improve. Now the question you'll all hate: who wants to do the presentation? :-) Is there anybody out there who is pretty well versed in IPTables that would be willing to address the next WLUG meeting? Just a thought: Do we want to ask Robert Ziegler to come back and address WLUG? He authored the Linux Firewalls book published by New Riders which was updated for IPTables. He addressed WLUG about 18 months ago and his talk was extremely detailed and technical. To be fair, some thought it was a bit too detailed and dry. Along those lines, I thought it might be good to discuss the distribution specific ways that firewalling is handled. I suspect that those are just GUIs that build a list of IPTables filters anyway. Is there anybody out there that is comfortable with discussing this for RedHat at the upcoming meeting? How about some other distro? fetchmail/sendmail problem... HELP

I REALLY need some help. I've included a lot of diagnostic stuff in this email to help the troubleshooting process. Please help. I'm struggling & I need some advice. The basic problem is that something changed between last night and this morning to make my email not work. Config details: ISP: charter email address subssn594(a)charter.net I use fetchmail to grab the email from the pop server (pop.charter.net) and deliver it to my local email account on my linux box (Red Hat 8.0) username on linux: bcurran fetchmailrc: poll pop.charter.net user subssn594 password xxxx fetchall When I run "fetchmail -v -v" I get good authentication, etc for both IMAP and POP3. I can see a list of email messages. Somehow it seems to behave differently, and I have no idea why. Maybe there are different DNS entries or something causing fetchmail to deliver to the wrong place. hi all, I have a domain(hasdemir.com) hosted on linux by a web hosting company. Nowadays many emails that I have sent, neither bounce back or be received by the other company. Help desk of the web hosting company told me that probably there are filters for our network (by the way I have no idea on what network means here). here is what they exactly told me: >> why would they filter my domain which has only three email accounts, >> and never spammed throughout its life? > They don't block domain by domain but they block a whole network, they > don't care many domains in that network are legit. printing config question

Problem: I'm not able to print multiple copies (or access any printer options). My setup... I have print queues configured on machines at home (parallel port connect) and at work (printing to smb printers on the network). In both cases, I'm running Red Hat 8.0. I have not installed cups. I'm using the CANON bjc600 driver at home and "Postscript Printer" at work. How can I get lpr options to work? TIA, Bill

Lan party ideas...

Hey All, So after reading Andy's email, it got me thinking about the whole installfest/lan party thing... and I'd like some input. 1. Do the members of WLUG think a lan party is a possible thing? 2. How many people do you think we could get to attend? 2a. How many people would we want to attend? At a certain point, if 200 people show up, it could get ugly... 3. Where and When could we hold such a shindig? Would this be something that the support staff at WPI would even entertain as an idea? Or, should we look else were... such as a VFW or some such place... 4. Should we have a link to the outside world, or should it just be an isolated LAN? 5. Time Frame... 6. What should we charge people (if anything) to attend? 7. Activities? This is where I want some broad input. Other than the obligatory FPS/RTS games, what other games or "stuff" would people like to see? I know Andy had mentioned a security demo... How about a clustering demo... Hi again Just got the latest PC Magazine and I note that my table of CD/DVD acronyms (plagarized from PC World) is already out of date. :-) Now we have CD-MRW where the M refers to Mount Ranier. Although "there have been no specific announcements of DVD+MRW drives yet, Phillips recently proposed an addition ... The Sony DRU-500A apparently ships with Mount Ranier. (The Mount Ranier format put a Main defect table in the Lead-in area (area outside the data area) and a copy of the defect table in the lead-out area.It also sets aside some space in the data area as a "replacement area" where date which would have landed in a bad block is put. The price is somewhat slower reads/writes and slightly reduced capacity. The gain is reliability. Non-MRW drives will need custom software to read MRW data.) doug

This drive (Sony) currently is not 100% supported by the dvdrtools package. The DVD+R and +RW portion works, but not the -R -RW. The authors of dvdrtools have not yet added support or figured out the firmware (specs? what specs?) The "dash" formats for this drive *may* burn from the non-free dvdrecord-pro package (same author as cdrecord). I saw one report of success. If you're looking for a DVD recorder for Linux, the Pioneer DVR-XXX line is the best supported (I have a DVR-104 which is the OEM ver of DVR-A04). These are DVD-R/-RW burners, with the -105 model now supporting 4X DVD-R. For backups you won't care about DVD-R's greater compatability with DVD-Video... but you might care about greater compatability with DVD-ROM readers (you wouldn't want to restore from the burner as the read speed won't match a speedy ROM drive like Pioneer DVD-117). The other benefit to -R/-RW is media price: the "dash" formats typically cost half what the "plus" formats. That's a novel development in my experience with this open-source operating system. The version I've been using is Red Hat Linux 8.0, shipped by Raleigh, N.C.-based Red Hat in late September. This is the first Linux distribution I've tried that hasn't made me feel as if I'm about to step on a rake and have its handle swing into my face. Parts of this are still infuriatingly convoluted, but if you've been thinking about trying out Linux on part of your hard drive -- or about dumping Windows entirely -- this is what I'd recommend. Why would you want to do that? One, Linux is cheap or free -- your choice. The personal edition of Red Hat 8 sells for $40 in stores, or you can download three CDs' worth at no charge (www.redhat.com) Nearly all Linux programs are also free to use. Two, Linux is free in another way: "Open source" means anybody can look at a program's code and tinker with it. Three, if you are inclined to tinker and try out new programs, Linux can be an interesting place. It's one of the most customizable operating systems, and quite a few Linux development projects -- for example, DVD playback -- seem to be hitting their stride. Four, while Linux has plenty of bugs and security issues, it is virus-free compared with Windows. All these qualities come with trade-offs, the big one being an often agonizing inscrutability. Red Hat 8 doesn't abolish these shortcomings but does bring them to a more manageable level. Its installation is quick and clean. Notwithstanding a clumsy disk-setup module (either partition your hard drive with another program or be prepared to wipe it clean), you can blithely go with the default settings and have a working desktop in less than 45 minutes. That includes functioning audio and video hardware, something beyond my reach in earlier Linux experiments. On each of three test PCs -- an old IBM desktop, a moderately recent IBM ThinkPad T21 and a brand-new Hewlett-Packard Media Center PC -- Red Hat 8 automatically and correctly set up the sound and graphics cards. It then accepted a digital-subscriber-line or office-network connection with no more configuration than Windows would require, and with the proper firewall protection enabled by default. A modem connection, unfortunately but predictably, was out of the question. Most PCs' internal modems require some fairly complicated, proprietary Windows software to function, and many manufacturers don't offer Linux versions of this software or documentation that would let other programmers handle the job. Red Hat 8 also couldn't do anything with the USB 2.0 ports on the HP, although it's supposed to support them. Red Hat 8's biggest departure from Linux convention is in its look. The company replaced the usual Linux front end with its own streamlined "Bluecurve" interface, which looks vaguely like Windows XP scrubbed of the neon colors. It also swept the system task bar and menu largely free of redundant or useless extras, although it lacks a simple way to edit the layout of those menus (say, if you'd like to consolidate the five or so system-options entries). Red Hat's software bundle focuses on the basics: the excellent Mozilla Web browser, the OpenOffice productivity suite (which read all of the Microsoft Office files I tried), and Evolution, an application featuring e-mail, an address book and a calendar that feels like a simplified version of Microsoft Outlook. What you won't find, however, is multimedia capability beyond a few image viewers and editors. Red Hat 8 ships without any way to play MP3 files, let alone create them. The company says it's concerned about the MP3 format's licensing requirements, but those issues haven't stopped other Linux distributions from including MP3 software. (Red Hat 8 does support an open-source music format called Ogg Vorbis, but its CD-ripping program isn't set up by default to use it.) MP3 software isn't hard to find and install in the "RPM" download format Red Hat developed, but you have to know where to look. And that's the thing: Red Hat 8 gets enough of the basics right to let you go online without injuring yourself (well, provided you don't need a modem). It could serve somebody well as a basic Web, e-mail and word-processing desktop. But going beyond the basics requires a willingness to learn. For instance, Red Hat 8's included digital-camera program took hours of tweaking before it would intermittently download pictures from a Canon S100 digital camera. I still can't get the Pilot-Link program to work with a Sony Clie handheld, although an upcoming release is supposed to fix that. Non-RPM software installs, which require mastering command-line syntax, are another problem. Sometimes things work out -- copying and pasting the right commands had the ThinkPad playing back a DVD in about half an hour -- and at other times you're stymied by missing or mismatched files. And many add-on programs, unlike Red Hat's core software, come with clumsy, user-hostile interfaces designed by programmers for other programmers. Ultimately, there's no substitute for personal help from a Linux veteran, whether online or in a local user group. All this self-inflicted effort might seem like a big waste of time. Then again, so can cooking, woodworking, collecting baseball cards or many other things people do to amuse themselves, and without getting a working PC in the process. Let's make WLUG meetings better!

HI everybody, I was a little disappointed at the turnout from the last WLUG meeting. We had 8 or 9 people show up, and while we did have a good time watching Scott and Doug get a couple of scanners working under Linux, it would have been alot more fun with more people in attendance. I believe this was the lowest attendance we've seen at a WLUG meeting in our 5.5 year history. :-( We discussed possible reasons for the low attendance at the Boynton over a few beers. One suggestion was that I should update the WLUG website to show what we have done at past meetings so people wouldn't think that nothing was accomplished. I've done that and will endeavor to keep that part of the WLUG website current (see "Past Meeting Information"). Another thought was that some people will only come to a meeting if the topic looks interesting to them, and if it is announced well in advance. I must admit to having been somewhat lax in that area lately. Therefore, in an attempt to remedy that (at least for this month), I'm putting out the call now for a speaker and a topic for the Dec. 12th meeting (its coming up fast!). I sent out a list of potential topics last month, but I know that there are a zilliion interesting things happening in the Linux world that could be discussed at a WLUG meeting. The meeting need not be discussion based, either! Although Kinnicutt Hall lends itself well to this type of meeting, we do have access to other rooms on campus. People have tossed out ideas such as these: o build a network for multiplayer Linux games o build a network to see if WLUG crackers can break into your system (not to destroy it, but to teach you what to fix to secure your system) o more live demos! The group exists to meet your needs, so please, state your needs! I can't arrange a meeting to your liking if I get no feedback on what you want to see at future WLUG meetings. More importantly, I'd like to see more and different people volunteer to do the presentations or to run a live demo. If you look back at the last year of WLUG meetings, you'll see the same names many times. While I'm *quite* happy that these folks continue to volunteer, I'd like to see others jump in also. Finally, if anybody has feedback regarding the last meeting and why it lacked attendees, please bring it up on the list so we can all discuss it. Without such candid discussions, WLUG cannot improve. Well the next question is... What do you want todo... The cross post in question wants to backup large amounts of data. I would think a drive that could do DVD-RW or DVD+RW would be their choice since they could setup some sorta rotation. As for supported drives you'd want to check the cdrecord website. Now, if you want to make backups of the DVD's that you own, or convert the VHS you've got into DVD, you'll also want a drive that can author DVD disks. However you'll want to check a site like www.vcdhelper.org they've got a good matrix of what different disks DVD players supports (such as VCD/SVCD/DVD-R/DVD-RW/etc...) Personally I've had luck making backup's of my DVD's onto DVD-R media. However this was using a mix of freeware windows utilities and Nero, I'm pretty sure that that the cdrcord-prodvd utilities it would work fine. Later, Tim. -----Original Message----- From: Brian J. You are probably seeing the difference between 80 * 10^9 representation and 80 * 2^30 representation of GB. An "80 GB" drive usually is seen by an OS as having ~73 GB of space. My question is whether the /dev/hdX syntax or /dev/md# or (hd#) syntax is correct and what the significance of the value 0x8000 for the Stage 2 load address. It certainly seems like method 3 is the cleanest. And, are any of these methods considered better than the others? REMINDER: Meeting Wed. Nov. 20, 7 PM

HI everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2002 at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall at WPI in Worcester, MA. I'm open for topics to be discussed at this meeting. Ideally, I'm hoping somebody will volunteer at the last minute to talk to the group about some topic of interest. Surprisingly enough, this happens frequently and works out well when all is said and done, so I'm not in a panic (yet). My only problem with this is that some folks come to a meeting only if the topic is announced in advance and it is of interest to them. So, what do you say, gang? Here are some ideas which I had: a) Does anybody want to demo their scanner under Linux? How about a live install of SANE ? b) Linux software for (grand)kids - I"ve seen TuxPaint and KTuberling, there must be others. Inquiring kids want to know! c) TiVO - doesn't that run Linux? Can you do any interesting hacks to the Linux software that could be demonstrated at our meeting? d) MAME - some guys at work built a MAME machine. Maybe you did, too? Tell us about it, or better yet, bring the machine to the meeting. e) LTSP - this one might be a bit involved if the demo was from scratch, and would involve around 2 or 3 computers to be useful. Does anybody have any experience with this? f) Do you have other ideas? Let the group know what they are! The "live demo" meetings have been well received in the past, especially if some problem crops up during the demo (which makes us demo folks squirm uncomfortably, to the amusement of the audience!). I hope somebody volunteers to speak at the next meeting. It'll be pretty boring otherwise, and nobody wants that to be the case. I've been working flat out for the last couple of months and have no time to prepare anything for ths meeting. If you want to volunteer, send me or the group e-mail ASAP. Sometimes you gotta believe the error message. I've reread the mount man page and I see no reference to bsd44 as being a legal option. Have you tried issuing the command without the '-o bsd44'? mounting bsd44 under RedHat

Greetings All! I am having an issue when attempting to mount a bsd44 (a freebsd partition) under a base install of Redhat 8.0. The kernel is 2.4.18-14, and has loaded the ufs f/s module. The FAT looks like: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hdc1 * 1 1912 15358108+ a5 FreeBSD /dev/hdc2 * 1913 8796 55295730 a5 FreeBSD /dev/hdc3 * 8797 9688 7164990 a5 FreeBSD /dev/hdc4 * 9689 9731 345397+ a5 FreeBSD I have attempted to mount the hdc1 partition as follows: mount -t ufs -o bsd44 /dev/hdc1 /hdc1 and I get the following error: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc1, or too many mounted file systems" Does anyone have any insight as to what I am doing wrong! Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I need to get the data off these FreeBSD partitions before I format them as EXT3.
