ACM Installfest

The Worcester Area Student Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery will be hosting an Installfest on March 27th from 6-9PM. It will be on WPI Campus in Higgins Lab 116. Veterans and newbies to Linux are welcome! If you are an experienced user, we will start setting up at 5PM, and you are welcome to show up then. We will be advertising heavily around campus, so hopefully we can attract some new users! We will be distributing and installing Mandrake, Debian, Knoppix, and Gentoo, although more distributions are certainly welcome. Hi everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at the usual place (the Access Grid room, WPI campus, Worcester, MA USA). Detailed directions can be found on the WLUG webpage. At this meeting, our featured speaker is J.D. "Illiad" Frazer, the author of the comic strip UserFriendly. There are more details, such as biographical information, and an explanation of the comic strip's characters, linked from the WLUG home page. This meeting will be broadcast onto the Access Grid. I just saw this on one of the other lists I'm on and I'm testing it out and it seems to work. http://shfs.sourceforge.net/ It lets you mount a remote filesystem over an SSH link. ala mount -t shfs root@someserver /mnt/localmntpnt Very cool. Tim.

Hi. I bought a Ximeta Netdisk (http://ximeta.com/products/netdisk.html) which is an external HDD with both USB and network connectivity. The company explicitly states that the device works with Red Hat 8 and 9, but I've had no luck with it. The drivers are available only as RPMs, no source provided. It's network attached, but it doesn't use a standard protocol. The RPM is supposed to install two modules, nd.o and lpx.o, but they don't show up with lsmod. When I try to load them with insmod or modprobe, I get a bunch of error messages about "unresolved symbols". I though it may have been a dependency problem, so I recompiled to load network block device (nbd.o), but that had no effect. I've tried both RH 8 and 9 fresh stock installs with the same results. Ximeta has stated that they will provide me a new driver, but I'm not holding my breath. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Setiathome is a good distributed program http://www.setiathome.com as well as gimps (can't remember the url). Seti is the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Life(be verry verry quiet, I'm hunting for aliens, huhuhuh). I have two machines using Gentoo that also have distcc servers running on them. I also have a couple other friends that also use gentoo and would like to use a larger distcc network. Hello, all. My name's Carlton and I figured this is probally the best place to post this note. My friends and I have recently got distcc working (a distributed compiler using gcc-3.3.2). We've currently got 7 (maybe 8?) computers running the distcc daemon right now. Basically, when any one of us compiles something the processess are distributed amongst the computers on the network running distcc. So, my question is, is anyone interested in joining our little group? I figure the more linboxes the merrier. We are also in the process of setting up a couple of G5's with cross compiling on distcc so any Mac guys out there are welcome to (but Linux/BSD guys are most welcome ^_^). Feel free to reply, sageman(a)wpi.edu, if you are interested. We are also looking at getting some other stuff distributed if at all possible but really haven't started looking anywhere yet. how to setup wireless network for WPI campus

hi, everyone. I am trying to config my linux laptop so I can use wireless connection on campus. However, it is not easy. I modified some script file and added the SSID and WEP info into it. However, it still didn't work. Anyone have some idea or experience about this? thanks

Building your own up2date server...

My suggestion is use a gentoo live cd (go with x86 no stages). There is also another option. If you have another computer you can burn a copy of knopix. Once you create the cd, you insert it into the CDROM drive, boot from CDROM to a nice KDE GUI and all partitions are automatically mounted. Click on the partition that has the needed info and you are good to go. It may sound complicated but Knopix has a really fine User Interface. (If you don't have a CDROM you can do the same thing with Tomsrbtb from a floppy) Then when you want to create a boot disk you can open a command window, mount the root partition and then do "chroot /mnt/rootPartition". From there you can run lilo or mkbootdisk. Good luck. Hi All, My desktop has 2 hard drives, one with Windows, one with Linux. By inserting the floppy, it boots Linux. Unfortunately, the floppy just stopped working (I get the Linux prompt, but then booting reports disk failure) for some reason. I need to retrieve several files on the Linux hard drive. Hiall! I have a Dell P4 server running RH8, Apache, Samba & sendmail (et al.), on a network with several other operating systems, and a broadband connection. Things I might require help with: 1. Samba config 2. Apache config 3. Disable sendmail, inst/conf tcpserver and qmail 4. Some general Linux admin questions 5. Some special-project-related things 6. Possibly ditching RH8 and moving to YD or Debian If there's anyone who would be interested in helping me out a little, enough to at least identify the main problems, I'd appreciate it greatly. Anti spam filters now active on wlug list

While at first glance it may appear that the WLUG list never contains any spam, this due to the fact that the list is closed - any emails coming from an address that is not subscribed to the list are held for approval by a moderator, ie, me. In reality, the WLUG list does get a fair amount of spam, sometimes ten or twenty on a bad day. In an effort to not have to deal with this manually, the WLUG list will now use the X-Perlmx-Spam header that is added by the WPI spam filter. Hopefully this will mean that the only messages I have to worry about manually approving are legitimate emails from people who for whateve reason aren't subscribed properly. Recommened QUIET cdrw/dvd drives?

Hi all, Does anyone has a recommendatio on a nice quiet CD-R/CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive? I see that newegg.com has a Lite-On and a Sony for sale today, both under $50 which seems like a steal. Sounds like a good thing since my SCSI CDRW drive is finally biting the bullet and acting flaky. One requirement is that the drive is quiet. I hate those CDROM drives which sound like jet engines on startup and then just click and whir and sound really loud all the time when running. I especially hate it when they spin up and down constantly. I'd rather have it just spin all the time if possible, or at least not spin down quite so quickly. The two I'm looking at are: Lite On 48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, Model LTC48161H, Retail Sony 48x24x48x16 Combo Drive, Model CRX300E/A, OEM I'm leaning towards the Lite-On one, since it comes with Burner software which my Wife can use (I plan on getting two of these BTW) while I'm happy with Linux in the basement. :] John

I'm using mkinitrd on a multi-processor system. I have both the single and multi-processor kernels loaded, but I rarely run the single-processor kernel. It's there mostly as a safety net. Question: Do I need to boot to the single-processor kernel in order to make a valid initrd image for a single-processor boot? I would hope that I can, but the man page is not specific about it. (I want to avoid the extra boot cycles.) TIA, Bill

Sound card troubleshooting

Hi, I have been running Suse 8.2 and Sound Blaster sblive! EMU10k1 with no trouble until the last online update from suse. Now I get the message "Cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it." And yet when using suse's configuration tool, YAST, the card appears to be configured correctly. The only weird thing I can find is that when I go to the hardware info page I see the following 2 entries: Unique key:_+Pw.mTanvDDnb_0 old_unique_key: airf.mTanvDDnb_0 Where should I start looking to figure out what got broken. FreeBSD - cvsup access down?

Hi All, Is anyone else running FreeBSD and having problems talking to any/all of the various CVSup servers around the world? I can't decide if the ISP which hosts the site where I have a co-lo is causing the problem, or if I've just done something stupid with my system setup. Basically, any connections for port 5999 on most of the CVSup servers I've tried talking to just times out. For example: # cvsup ports-supfile Cannot connect to cvsup14.FreeBSD.org: Connection refused Will retry at 14:29:15 Retrying Cannot connect to cvsup14.FreeBSD.org: Connection refused Will retry at 14:40:01 Thanks, John

Hi everybody, Please note that I just rescheduled a bunch of the meetings for calendar year 2004. Please check the WLUG website for more information. Please accept my apologies for scheduling two Wednesday meetings for consecutive months. I am scheduling around my commitment to teach a Linux course for the Adult Education program in Chelmsford, MA. A note about the December 2003 meeting: This meeting was well attended, with at least 30 people present to watch the "Revolution OS" DVD. Many thanks for your generous donations to help defray the cost of the raffle items (we broke even *and* set a WLUG record of $58.50!), and to Chuck Anderson for his help with the projection system. It was nice to see some faces of people who occasionally attend meetings in addition to the "regulars" and a few newbies. With regard to the January 2004 meeting, there was an interesting discussion on the WLUG mailing list recently about digital signatures and e-mail. I would like to know if there are any volunteers who would like to do a presentation on this topic. If so, please send me an e-mail. Here are some ideas which came to mind: - how to create your own digital signature (and why) - how to get your friend's digital signature and be sure it is authentic - how to configure (pick a mail client) for use with digital signatures - verifying a digitally signed e-mail - other related ideas? Give away...

Hey Everybody, I've got a color 13" television I'd like to give to a good home. It's an oldie, but a goodie. Every once and a while it'll get a bit of a red ting, but overall it works great. Note, this TV only has coax input. I've also got a 21" viewsonic monitor that the red electron gun has gone on the fritz. I'm sure a monitor tech could fix it in no time, however since it cost me nothing, I feel no qualms in just giving it away. Other stuff... 1. Pentium 166 with 128mb of ram. This entire machine is questionable and possibly a fire hazard (due to some dodgy soldering work done by your truly on the power supply after the fans bearings went south and I installed a new fan) though I ran the machine for many years after my repairs and never had a problem. With a new case and power supply this machine would probably be a great firewall. It's also got a 512mb and 3gig hard drive in it. 2. Huge Server case minus power supply. 6 bays in the front, lots of room for fans and drives and all that good stuff. Hi everybody, Our next WLUG meeting will actually be a joint meeting with WLUG and the Worcester County IEEE Computer Society. We'll hold the meeting in Olin Hall room 107 on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA USA (we've been there before) since it seats more people. We're anticipating a larger than normal turnout for this meeting due to the showing of the documentary entitled "Revolution OS" (on DVD!). This documentary runs for 1 hour and 25 minutes. No expertise in Linux is required to understand this documentary. Revolution OS tells the inside story of the hackers who rebelled against the proprietary software model and Microsoft to create GNU/Linux and the Open Source movement. This documentary features interviews with Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman, Bruce Perens, Eric Raymond, Brian Behlendorf, Michael Tiemann, Larry Augustin, Frank Hecker, and Rob Malda. I've purchased a few items for the no-cost raffle which will be held after the showing of the documentary: o a copy of the Revolution OS DVD o a Revolution OS tee shirt o a Revolution OS coffee mug o a Revolution OS poster (11"x7") As always, light refreshments will be served at the meeting. Wireless PCMCIA cards?

List, I recently was given a 3com wireless gateway from my employer. I would like to put this baby to good use! :D I have to admit that I am at a loss as to what to do about the NIC, though. I am running RH9 (although this may change soon) on my Gateway Solo 9100 laptop. Sometimes it's running WinMe, but that's only when I want to play games. ;) My question to you all is this: What PCMCIA Wireless (802.11b) cards should I consider? Which ones should I avoid? * I would like to be able to do WEP as painlessly as possible, if I can. * I'm not too worried about range, since my apartment isn't terribly large. There are a couple walls to contend with, though. 8\ On the other hand, the battery on this laptop STINKS, so it will be plugged into the wall around 99.4% of the time that the system is up. Because of that little truth, power consumption is not a big worry. * The gateway I have does 802.11b. Red Hat vs SuSE....

okay. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that has been following the goings-on with respect to Red Hat (dropping the Personal Edition in favor of Fedora) and SuSE (being bought by Novell). I am looking for some honest advice here. I am NOT trying to start a flame war or a distro war. I will honestly take suggestions. I am running Aurora Linux on a Sun SPARCstation 10 (it's based on RH7.3) and RH9 on my laptop (Gateway Solo 9100) right now. I have been running Red Hat on my systems since 5.x. given what I have seen in the news, I think it is time to consider another distro, though. Here are my thoughts so far: I am feeling a bit underwhelmed with what i've been reading about Fedora from RH's website and from Aurora's list. I can't say with any level of certainty that I will stay and shift to Fedora. I will likely shift to another distro, though. I'm not considering Debian at the moment because I don't think that it moves quickly enough to keep up with updated stuff. Perhaps that is a flawed perception, but I don't look kindly on installing a baseline (from the CD) and spending a month of Sundays running apt-get to update everything. The last time i played with SuSE was around 1997 or 1998. I got the SuSE disc from CheapBytes so I could play with it. I liked the tools that it had (YaST was just getting ready to shift to YaST2, i think), but I didn't like the fact that many of the libraries were a couple versions behind what my favorite applications (of the day) wanted to find. I am actually favoring SuSE right now, if I can get what i need on CDs. (Andy, do you have any suggestions?) I cut my eye-teeth on Slackware back when Linux was still at 0.99pl10. My Dad sent me a box of floppies that had everything i'd need to get started. I had a blast! I don't know about Slackware now. I have not been following them (at all) since I shifted to RH all those years ago. Gentoo is not even being considered right now. My fastest system is a P2/400, and that is running Win98se. (My wife uses it to play the Sims. Games are all Win* is good for anyway.) My fastest *nix box is my laptop, and that's a P2/266. I don't have the time nor the resources to (re?)compile everything to suit my system. Given these thoughts, the Debian and Gentoo folk should understand that my opinions, as stated above, are open to change. Show me where i misunderstood, and i will thank you. :) I'm just looking for a Distro that will let me install my system with a minimum of pain, let me tweak where I want, when i want, and provides a neat way to keep things up to date (think security, etc.).... I've gotten used to the RPM system of archives, but I prefer tarballs. I have this "thing" about putting anything I add to the system in /usr/local .... :) Thanks for any advice. new mutt user ?'s

I've made the switch from pine to mutt, and I have 2 questions. 1. Why is mutt so slow in sending outgoing email? Pine delivered outgoing email quickly, but mutt seems MUCH slower -- too slow to even consider that there's a performance problem. It seems to be some issue about how it interfaces with sendmail. (I'm using my own machine as an outgoing relay through my web services provider.) 2. I had set up a filter in pine to move "[SPAM]" subject lines to a different folder. Should I try the same thing with mutt, or should I use procmail? (I'm not sure of the syntax.) mutt syntax? I can't find anything that looks right at all. procmail syntax? I already have spamassassin set up: :0fw: spamassassin.lock | /usr/bin/spamc So I think I need to add: :0 * ^Subject: *\[SPAM\] $HOME/Mail/autospam (I'm a newbie with procmail, too.) TIA, Bill

I just bought a Dlink DI-514 from Best buy for $30 after rebates (about 2 weeks ago, $70 before). I would suggest either D-link, Linksys, or Netgear. If you watch the Best Buy/OfficeMax/Staples ads, you can end up one for 30-50. The Wireless Access Points themselves are $80. I bought the Dlink because it's not Linksys/Cisco, and I have been VERY happy with it. All 3 of these devices are fully compatable, so you can buy anyones card and connect with the access point. I would go with the 802.11b wireless unless you have a great need for a large wireless network (5+ clients). simple debian question

Where do I put commands that I want executed immediately after bootup? In suse, I put them in /etc/rc.d/boot.local, but debian has no such directory or file. OK, I lied. Here's the real question. I have two linux installations on the same box (suse 7.2 and debian woody). How do I arrange permissions so that I can access the user's (my) home directory in the other installation without rebooting to that other installation? I notice that when I look at the home directory on the other system, the owner is listed by the user number rather than the name, so what I've done is to create a user in debian whose name is the same as the suse number for the same user, so that user owns the suse user's home directory, then change permissions so all users can read/write that directory. That's pretty ugly, and I have to change permissions when I reboot suse. There's gotta be an easier, cleaner way. Thanks, Greg

Hi everybody, I wanted to send this meeting announcement out early for a change. :-) Our next WLUG meeting will actually be a joint meeting with WLUG and the Worcester County IEEE Computer Society. We'll hold the meeting in Olin Hall room 107 (we've been there before) since it seats more people. We're anticipating a larger than normal turnout for this meeting due to the showing of the documentary entitled "Revolution OS" (on DVD!). This documentary runs for 1 hour and 25 minutes. No expertise in Linux is required to understand this documentary. Revolution OS tells the inside story of the hackers who rebelled against the proprietary software model and Microsoft to create GNU/Linux and the Open Source movement. This documentary features interviews with Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman, Bruce Perens, Eric Raymond, Brian Behlendorf, Michael Tiemann, Larry Augustin, Frank Hecker, and Rob Malda. I've just purchased a few items for the raffle which should arrive prior to the meeting date. text mailer recommendation?

I'm a pine user, and I was looking at the release notes for fedora core 1. Pine is not included due to license and "long term maintenance" issues. I've enjoyed using pine for 8 or more years, and I really like it. I'm disappointed that it won't be continued under Red Hat. (I know I could install it myself. Maybe that's the right answer.) Although I'm not enthusiastic about switching mailers, maybe it's time. My needs are pretty basic: Text-based because I work across a WAN when I access home email from work & vice-versa. Connection to xemacs & the gnuclient interface. (I wrote a perl script to do it.) It would be nice if my address book ported to the replacement mailer. Interface to LDAP address book server. Any suggestions about replacements or just building pine myself? Are there really problems that make it unattractive? TIA, Bill

upgrading suse 7.2 to 8.1

I'm getting ready to upgrade from SuSE 7.2 to 8.1, and I have a little confusion and some questions. I'm going from 7.2 pro edition to 8.1 personal edition. Any ideas what's missing in the personal edition? Attempting to replace what is installed, I get a list of conflicts, with advice to delete the old program, even if they don't have a replacement. I was surprised to see that balsa and gftp were listed as not having newer versions. Is this because they're not on the personal edition? I know they exist, because they're available at rpmfind. The real issue - XFree 4.x doesn't seem to want to recognize my ELSA GLoria-L video card. Sax2 will run in 640x480 only, and I can't get it to run with the glint driver (the one that's supposed to work with this card). I tried doing this with the SuSE 8.2 evaluation disk, and I'm running into the same problems I had when I tried to upgrade to XFree 4.1 about a month ago. So here's the question - Can I upgrade to 8.1 without upgrading XFree? Better yet, if I upgrade the XFree, and it doesn't work, is there an easy way to return to the older version by using the CD's. Or do I have to manually back up /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 first, and then recopy them to get back to the older version? Will the rest of the SuSE 8.1 be pissed off about using XFree 3.3.6? I suppose I could change the vid card, but I'd rather not spend any money, and since this one is listed as working, I'd like to be able to get it to work. Digitally signed e-mails

HI everybody, While I was cleaning out my inbox e-mail folder, I ran across several e-mails from WLUG members which were digitally signed. I've recently upgraded to SuSE 9.0 and the 'new' version of KDE's Kmail flags these e-mails in bright yellow. Kmail is telling me that I don't have the senders public key available, and thus it isn't sure that the mail actually camed from the claimed sender. My question is this: how do I get someone's public key ? Further, that brings up another question in this space: 1) How do I know that the public key I'm given really belongs to the person giving it ? Now, go to msn.com and search the Microsoft way for the same two words. You get exactly 18 pages. The word censorship doesn't seem to do justice to what Microsoft has done to a msn user who wants to compare Linux with Windows, does it? Then maybe we should go in that direction. Give a five minute explanation about what linux is and where it came from and then talk about what a distribution is and the companies that make them. No techno-geek talk (because you will invariable try to cover too much in too little time), just something that will interest the audience enough to want more. 30 minutes is just enough time to show everyone how they can configure a Linux server to support their own real estate business or construction business or oil business or... as well as interest the experienced novice who might want to try getting out from under their ISP. When they want more, then you can talk about follow-up episodes, or direct them to WLUG at the end of the episode (or both). The WLUG site could have video available, metting topics, and so forth... I got this output from df: Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/hda7 1381 843 468 65% / /dev/hda1 10 4 6 36% /boot /dev/hda5 248 1 235 1% /tmp df -H produces the not-so-different: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda7 1.4M 866k 477k 65% / /dev/hda1 10k 3.5k 6.2k 36% /boot /dev/hda5 254k 14 241k 1% /tmp My disk is 8GB, and although I believe the percentages are correct, this is a little unnerving. Any idea why df would be confused? Or have I created the most amazing single-floppy distribution ever?!? This is a system I just un-mothballed, it's mostly an older debian sid that I'm slowly upgrading to latest in stages. Could this be something out of date with respect to something else? -Chuck

W.L.U.G. TV show...

For those who didn't attend the meeting last night, we talked a little about the idea of producing a linux focused TV Show. From that discussion we decided that the best thing to-do would be to have the main part of the discussion through the mail list. So, here it is... Firstly, I think we need to decide who our target audience is. This morning I came up with notion that generally, users can be broken into several groups. The first group are novice users. These are people who use a computer, but the concept of an operating system or the idea that windows isn't just "part of the system" and not removable is alien. The second group is "advanced" users. I think most of us would fall into this group. We understand OS's, hardware, software and all the digital glue that holds it together. The third group is educational users. These would be people who work in some education institution and they're interest in linux would be from the standpoint of deploying it for cost savings and/or using it as an education tool for teaching. The forth group would be corporate suit types. These are the people who read the trade rags, but don't have a clear understanding of what linux. They've read lots of conflicting FUD on the subject and aren't sure how linux could be used in they're environment or what the real TCO would be. Personally, I think we should go after groups 1-3. The reason I'm not too worried about the fourth type is that now that redhat had decided that they're going to go full force into the enterprise environment, they'll be busy spending lots of PR dollars convincing the suits. What do people think. Also, if it is the consensus that we should focus on groups 1-3, should we narrow our focus even more? Thanks, Tim.

I agree with both what you and Matthew both said. So, I think our new groupings should be 1. Novice Users 2. Intermediate Users 3. Advanced Users 4. Educational Users I've dropped the suits off the map because they don't really apply (in this context). I think maybe we should focus on the Novice and Intermediate users first. Then focus on the Educational users second and then maybe due hyper focused treatments for the advanced users. Tim, I would have to say I agree with your "user grouping" for the most part, but feel (IMHO) that there might be a group of people that fall between the novice and advanced users, lets call them the "hobbyist group". These people know how to use a computer, have probably "dabbled" in linux, but need some help performing certain tasks or need convincing on turning the corner and using linux full time. This is an important group because a) I'm a member of this group :o) and b) members of this group know the value of linux, but want to make sure they can do everything they want to do in linux i.e. listen to MP3's, burn CD's, browse the web, be able to use a word processor, etc .... I think that the general idea of spreading the linux word is a great idea especially on a visible medium, but the most value would be added if the largest user group is targeted. So, in a nutshell, I think you guys have a great idea and I hope to watch you guys on TV sometime soon. HI Everybody, I'm sending this again since I'm not sure if my last attempt made it due to the mailing list server problem. BTW, my thanks to Frank Sweetser for fixing this problem! There is a WLUG meeting being held on Wednesday, Nov 5th at 7:00 PM in the Access Grid room on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA USA. Directions to this room can be found on the website. At this meeting, I'd like to talk about the "WLUG TV" show which was discussed somewhat at the end of our last meeting, and again in the mailing list. I'd like to see if we can get some roles and responsibilities defined for interested folks so that this effort can move forward. Secondly, I'll bring my laptop and we can explore SuSE 9.0 together, but I haven't had much chance myself to see all that is new and different. We can also talk about RedHat's recent announcement about "no more RedHat Linux" and the potential purchase of SuSE by Novell. Afterwards, we'll adjourn to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beers. system time config question

This is a repost -- I believe the original was lost during the WLUG server outage. I'm having trouble keeping the time correct on one of my linux boxes. Just one of them. My others are just fine. In all cases, I'm using the redhat-config-date gui. When I use the gui, it corrects the time just fine, but somethings not happening to check the reference network time (daily?) to correct the local system time. I've compared a number of things between systems to try to identify what's wrong on the one machine, but I haven't found the key yet. Any suggestions? TIA, Bill

Hi Everybody, We have a WLUG meeting coming up this Wednesday, November 5th, at 7:00 PM in the Access Grid room on the WPI campus. Please check the WLUG website for directions to this location. At this meeting, I'd like to take a few minutes to discuss the "WLUG TV" show that was proposed at the last meeting, and which seems to have considerable interest from quite a few people in WLUG. We are fortunate that we have people in WLUG who have experience in this area, and that we have folks who have the energy and desire to do this type of work. I would like to identify those people who definitely wish to participate, and perhaps a project leader. In a few minutes, I'm going to start installing SuSE Linux 9.0 on my laptop. If I get it working, and can learn enough about its distinguishing features, I'll discuss that at the meeting also. If I hit problems, or if I don't have enough time to play with it, I'll defer this topic to the December meeting. To be completely fair, if somebody wants to address a WLUG meeting to discuss the latest features of their favorite distribution, please let me know, and we can arrange this. For example, I'm curious to know more about Gentoo, or how to install Knoppix on my hard drive, or why Debian's "apt-get" is supposedly better than rpms. If people have some quick 5-15 minute topics for this meeting, bring them along and we can discuss them as a group. Tech support types of questions are always welcome, as are new user questions. Hi all I was somewhat surprised not to see mention of this article on this list so I thought I'd pass it on. On Monday the T&G had an article "Tech Policy Changes --- Mass going open source". The gist was that Finance secretary, Erik Kriss instructed the state's chief technology officer to adopt a policy of "open standards, open source" for all future spending on information technology. Interesting. It will be interesting to see what comes of this. doug

thanks everyone! you're right there! i've scheduled a meeting in the production room with people who are interested in making the show to discuss the details(see below). with everyone's responces so far i don't think it's quite possible to even meet for a production discussion. i've canceled the show time(production meeting) for tomorrow due to the lack of people . however i'll be there anyway......... as far as editing - it should be a 'live' show as previosly mentioned(that's where a good show host will be in need). if anyone wants to spent hours editing footage it would not be me. yury ps al, mattew thank you for your desire to participate in the project. i greatly appreciate your responce. Hi! Since my job is in the TV field, I have been watching this thread. Before you can even look at a studio, there are several things that need to be acomplished. The Producer (someone has to take the reins and make decisions, studio reservations, find crew, etc.) needs to set up some production meetings and decide how the show will be formatted (is it a series of shows, is it a one time show, talking heads show, magazine type, etc.). Then, a script has to be written. What will happen when, what needs to be edited, how long the final production will be, etc. Then a crew has to be chosen: director, camera operators, editors, etc. Then studio time, if needed, could be reserved. If someone has a digital video camera, I believe there is some editing software out there that runs on Linux. Doug, you are right, but your numbers are off a tad; for every second of finished video, approx. 1 minute of post production are required. Pre-production time is even more than that, sometimes. Don't let the numbers scare you...it's still quite do-able, just remember, a good product takes some time and work. domain settings on dsl with dynamic IP and NAT (and postfix issue)

One thing I've never been sure of is what to set the domain to on my Linux box. I'm on verizon dsl with a dynamic IP and PPPOE. I just got a dyndns.org domain with a different hostname than what I have for the machine. I set up the machine to run spamassassin (and to experiment). Machine name = grizzy Dyndns.org address = dibb.homelinux.net Email = jntdibb(a)bellatlantic.net What should I be using for the domain name? Specifically I'm having trouble with some part of postfix or spamc/d. I believe an hourly cron job is trying to send mail to 'root' which causes the following in maillog. I can send my postfix/main.cf file if anyone is interested. In my eyes, a well configured box is one where every daemon that doesn't need to be run, is turned off. Sane firewalling rules are in place for the services that do need to be run. Something like redhat network is configured in cron to run once a day and pull updated patches and apply them automagically. You can't expect regular Joe User to become a sysadmin over night. Firstly, cost and freedom. Explain to people why linux is a better choice than the perceived "free" copy of windows that came with their computer. I think we should definitely explain the microsoft tax. Second, security. Make it a point of explaining that linux is impervious to the many worms and viruses that are running around the internet. Though we should also caution people that a poorly configured linux box is just as bad (if not worse) than an bare unpatched windows machine. At the meeting last Thursday, I asked about a problem I'm having with KDE desktop, and Tim mentioned I should run 'tail -f /var/log/messages' in another terminal while loading KDE. Description of problem: KDE starts to load, tells me it's checking peripherals, and then the screen goes black. Ctrl-alt-back kills the xserver and gets me out. In running the tail, I discovered that KDE really is runnning OK, but I have to switch to another virtual console (alt-F2) and then ctrl-alt-F7 will get me to the kde desktop. I get error messages from modprobe while kde is loading. It's looking for sound-slot-1, which I think is odd, because modules.conf doesn't say anything about a sound-slot-1. I only have one sound card, and it's at sound-slot-0. I tried turning off the sound server in the kde control center, and that didn't help. I also get gpm error messages when I go in an out of an x-session. Changing GPM_PARAMS in /etc/rc.config to the correct type of mouse helped get rid of flaky mouse behavior in console, but the error messages continue. Below are the messages. Debian question

Oh, hey... my Debian rant reminded me of something! I have Debian running on a 486-25 with 12MB of RAM. (Pause for laughter...) Okay. Now then. When I run dpkg (on its own, or via apt-get) it wants about 18M of RAM to work with. This causes a fair deal of thrashing, and if I just let it go, it takes about 30 minutes to install even the most basic package. My solution thus far is to use the NBD driver to mount a swap space over the network. This is actually faster because the swap and actual package install don't have to contend for precious HDD seek time, and I can install the most basic packages in about 10 minutes or so. Even so, it would be nice if it were a bit faster still. Anyone know what dpkg does with its RAM? Is it loading all the packges into memory to figure out dependencies and stuff? Any way to make it behave more efficiently? -Chuck

That�s why I hope to meet guys into slack. Tomorrow night�s meeting? The email below is about my climb in life and the three technical things foremost in my concerns. If you�re not into slack, there�s no need to continue reading. tks, Brian - - - - - - - - - - - - - I'm a newbie with just a little Fortran experience and a 1 gig HDD machine with Windows 98 and no printer either! Nonetheless I�m feeling the need to choose Slackware 9.1. It�s because I�ve read a bit of craft obligation and personal challenge in the following: �Slackware is Linux's oldest living distribution. It does not try to emulate Windows, it tries to be as Unix-like as possible. It does not try to cover up processes with fancy, point-and-click GUIs(Graphical User Interfaces). Instead, it puts users in control by letting them see exactly what's going on. Slackware is for people who enjoy learning and tweaking their system to do exactly what they want. Slackware's stability and simplicity is why people will continue to use it for years to come.� But simple does not mean easy, does it? Back in the days when men were Men........... I�m up in years (you�ll know me when you see I�m fat, ugly, and bald with white hair), but in my day I made 5 violins under a master (before life took me somewhere else). The only power tool I used was a band saw to cut smaller pieces out of a split log. You can make a violin out of very few knives, chisels, scrapers, and a block plane. I made my own patterns, knives, and scrapers. I had never worked wood before, even by power tools. (I never had had interest in those.) Those early instruments were slow going and not a little agony, but I knew with control of the hand and discipline of the heart that I could step up in my work, and take it to the level of art, well beyond anyone skilled with power tools. Am I a bit competitive and still trying to be a man�s man? Anyhow, I believe you see the parallel. I want to get to command line and not rely at an emotional level on commercial distributions what with all *their* packaging schemes (read: complications) and *their* bloatware GUI�s. It�s a bit about control and pride, isn�t it? How else can I bypass the Windows mentality and hope to step up in open source as a craft? I want to be a thinker and doer in this game, not just a consumer or user of various Distributions. My goal longer term is art, not just sitting at the feet of documented Authority. Another parallel: how can you design a Cadillac with no skills to build a model T Ford? Man or not, I�m scared! At the least I�m feeling a little shaky, and here�s why. Switching back to the violin story, I knew how to make those knives out of straight razors and scrapers out of blue shim stock. I could sharpen on my own the blade of a block plane until no one could see the edge. It was intuitive and it wasn�t rocket science. It took no prior reading or class instruction. I put in plenty of sweat time at the bench. It took me eight days (no kidding) to cut my first bass bar to a perfect fit, and I never backed off once from the challenge. Of course I knew my master was back there, watching. I did not quit while seeing him work at ten times my rate. My pride would not let me give up. But there came a time when I could go no further without my master�s help. Art was not possible without the ultimacy and intimacy of oral tradition. Thank God for newsgroups and the WLUG. It takes a community to raise a boy to manhood. So learning slackware, as learning unix in the old days, must require a combination of self-reliance AND guru help. In life we must settle for no false choices. Three items below. As background, I�m about ready to place an order for a stripped down machine with two IDE drives and Slackware. (Forget all that talk last week about SCSI, I don�t need bragging rights or a hardware �screamer.� Because, as you must know by now, the �screaming� I�m experiencing now has nothing whatever to do with any hardware.) 1. Partitions. I�m new to Linux, but trying to learn, so please don�t shoot me. What should my (various?) slack files look like? I have never seen any. I don�t know what to look for. Specifically, what partitioning specs can I give to the vendor who will pre-install and configure slack for me so that I have a working machine? I would like to be able to read and learn from these files BEFORE the iron arrives on my desk. I would like to split my slack partitions over two 80G disks for speed of random access. Thus, taking platter construction into account, the most frequently used partitions should be in the physical center of each disk. I would like to put slack primarily on hda, and, later on, any second distribution (Mandrake? Libranet? new Debian when it comes out?) primarily on hdb. What detailed partitioning do you recommend upfront to permit or pave the way for this control and flexibility? 2. Internet. auuggh..! Here, a problem of the chicken/egg variety. What should my slack files look like for dial-up access (to start with my current Prodigy) and DSL access (Speakeasy later when I�m ready to try downloads)? Unless I have these things up and running, I won�t be able to interface with online Linux help! 3. Printer. Anyone have a reliable model number for a Linux printer to suggest? Hi all, Newbie here. I want to get to the command line and some interesting scripting projects as soon as possible. Would you help me get there? Some preliminaries: First, I live in Worcester. Can you help me find an ISP that will know how to talk to a Linux newbie like me? Second, I want to multiboot with distros that are easy to tinker with AFTER that so-caloled "easy install." I hear that RPM-based approaches give headaches in this regard. So here is my provisional list: - Debian 3.0 - Slackware 9.1 - Libranet 2.8.1 (a commercial tailoring of Debian) How might you comment on or modify this selection so I can learn Linux with the least impediment to changes after the install? What order would you tackle them in? Finally, on Saturday I may order a SCSI box with Los Alamos Computers, laclinux.com. Any word about them, good or bad? They are willing to pre-install a multi-boot for any selection of distros that I want! May I phone you if you would be open to that? What are good times for us to talk? Hi all, Newbie here. I am purchasing a system to learn Linux with by multi-booting. The three distros I'm thinking of having the vendor pre-install are: - Slackware 9.1 - Libranet 2.8.1 (a commercial Debian from Canada) - some RPM approach (which of RH, Suse, or Mandrake would you go with? why?) I want to learn with diverse systems that are easy to modify/reconfigure/ maintain/upgrade after the box arrives. Would you say this a good mix of distros fo initial learning purposes, or would you suggest I consider another mix or approach--and why? Hi everybody, Our next WLUG meeting is coming up soon. This e-mail is a friendly reminder of that fact. This meeting will be held in a totally new location on the WPI Campus in Worcester, MA USA. The location is called the "Access Grid" room, and it is located in the "lower wedge" of Morgan Hall. Detailed directions appear on the recently updated WLUG website. I'll try to post a few of my penguin signs to guide you. I'm told that this room has some great projection equipment and can hold approx. 20-25 people without a problem. At this meeting, Doug Waud will talk about and demonstrate some genealogical Linux software called Lifelines. As I don't expect this to take the entire duration of the meeting, I'll also bring my laptop and demonstrate XFce version 4, a lightweight desktop for Linux. In addition, I was asked to spend a few minutes describing a couple of commands for the new Linux users of the group. We can also explore the capabilities of the new meeting room and make plans for its use at future meetings. After the meeting, we'll go out for pizza and beer at the Boynton Restaurant. See ya later! Brian, I would start by getting used to one distro before venturing out. If you are not familiar with Linux/UNIX at all there will be a steep learning curve before you build up your command line vocabulary. With that said I think RH is a great starter distro. The installer is one of the best, and for someone new to Linux rpm's are the best way to get you where you want fast (rpmfind is your friend). Matt

what size/speed combo to use for a dual SCSI system?

Hello -- I'm new here, and hoping to meet many of you soon! I want to multi-boot and play with three distros for a machine that would most likely always be a workstation, not a server. It would be for numerical work and not involve large or many audio or video files. It happens that the smaller the SCSI drive, the better the performance, and of course the smallest, fastest sizes available for SCSI are 18G and 32G. I'm planning to buy a matched pair of drives in order to spread the partitions for each distro across the two drives. Two questions: 1. I'd like to use use 2x18, but in your opinion, do I need 2x32? 2. Do you think 15000 rpm will be noticeably snappier than 10000 rpm? Passwd/shadow problem with RH 7.X

I've resurrected a linux box that had RH7.something installed, current kernel is 2.8.18. Anyway, the user accounts (all one of them) I had setup before work fine. I can't for the life of me add a new one though, because the password doesn't seem to be getting handled correctly. When I do 'useradd -g mailer -p test mynewuser', an entry ends up in /etc/shadow that looks like mynewuser:test:...... In other words the cleartext password is in the shadow file. I can't change it or log in. If I specify no password (no -p) it doesn't work either. I've run the pwconv program, nothing seems to help. Any clues? I played with this for two hours and couldn't make any sense of it. I did find an article on line where someone had the same symptoms and pwconv fixed it, but I can't make it work. Thanks. mail disaster recovery

My home DSL has been down for over 48 hours and it appears that it will be down for several more days. (I spare you the gory details). I am concerned about losing mail coming into various domains at that site. That RH 7.3 machine runs mail/web/primary DNS for those domains. I have modified the secondary DNS records for those domains (on a machine at my office - also on DSL) with an higher cost MX record pointing to a machine at the office also running RH 7.3 and sendmail, which I assume will pick up and queue the mail. The DNS TTLs are reasonably short, fortunately. I've done this following O'Reilly/Sendmail book 2nd edition, but its not always crystal clear if you don't already understand it! Is there anything else I have to do on the backup machine (pointed to by the new MX records), particularly is there anything I have to do to its sendmail config files? Any other pointers or "gotcha"s to this whole process? Dick

I have an mp3 that i wish to burn to CD. mp3 original is 22khz mono. Using the xmms disk writer i can output this to wav, but the sampling is still the same. To burn to CD, cdrecord requires 44khz stereo. Anyone know of an easy way to get into the format i need? Hi all... I created a directory, on my RH 9.0 (2.4.20) Linux server, that I would like to share with other computers on our LAN. I have smb and nmb running and I can see the share from a MS windows 2000 box. When I try to map the drive and click on the remote folder name (\\linux-hostname\share-name), it asks me to log on to the Linux server (I'm using security = share in /etc/samba/smb.conf). When I enter my username/password pair, it tells me that they're invalid. I have identical usernames & passwords on both boxes and I'm not encrypting the usernames and passwords...yet. We could also have a distribution bake off if we wanted as well. We did this before and it worked really well. If we have a BSD head in the crowd, they could demo [Open|Free|Net]BSD as well. I think as a follow-up to this, we could have a separate meeting that would be entirely focused on securing BAD/linux. I think it would be disingenuous to not only the students of WPI, but also tech guys in WPI to let a bunch of people loose on the network with easily rootable machines. That's my 0.018441 Euros. Crypto filesystem

Does anyone have experience with an encrypted filesystem? I have a notebook with a good chunk of confidential data, and although I would be really pissed off if I lost it ($$$), I'd be even more pissed off not knowing that my personal and corporate data may or may not have been found. So if anyone knows the answers, I have some questions: 1. Is loop-aes the way to go? Sounds pretty simple and painless to me. 2. What's your opinion of the optimal security/CPU tradeoff? I have an 800ish MHz Crusoe. So, I'll play around and probably figure out the answers by myself, but if anyone can jumpstart me (such as "Don't use funkyfish128, because that can be easily exploited!") that would be appreciated. Query regarding email applications...

Hi all! I am currently using mozilla 1.3.1 and want to be able to move my email to other applications. I'd like to be able to move it to Netscape, Eudora, and yes, Outlook. The reason for this is to show my new department head why folks using different operating systems, say Linux, should be allowed to use different operating systems as well as different email applications. His only concern is "email compatibility". Now, once upon a time, it was really easy to move the files between Netscape and Eudora, for example. They both had simple files that contained the information (e.g., Eudora used to use .toc of the index, and .mbx for the actual email while Netscape use to use - well, I can't remember, but is was a similar flat file arrangement). So, I took a quick look at Eudora 5.1, and it looks like the familiar old setup. Mozilla 1.3.1 looks like it is using a database of some sort (.sdb?) and Netscape 7.1 looks, well, different from what I remember! In the good old days, I could figure this out in a few minutes and would have replicated my email across all of these apps! the last time I did this was about 3 years ago as a demonstration of the very same point. Sigh! So, I decided to see how the import capabilities look and, well, they don't play well, as far as I can tell. Outlook and Eudora have no idea about Mozilla, and it doesn't look like Netscape does either. The point to all this is the following question: I have a boss who is predisposed to setting up Linux for those in his department who are interested (he might be as well). He wants to be able to "import & export" between Outlook and whatever on whatever. Is there a way to show him that he can have his cake and eat it too, either by moving files, or by using more than one email application as an intermediary (e.g., Mozilla -> Outlook Express -> Eudora)? ssh woes followup

Also... From both machines, I can scp to an external machine. These 2 boxes I'm having problems with are on opposite sides of an intracompany vpn. Could I be having problems with the vpn? The VPN is a big-expensive end to end hardware solution that I don't get to play with. If it were that, any ideas on how I could prove that to corporate IT? Please note... it's possible that the vpn has nothing to do with the problem. -Marc

SSH doesn't like me.

So I use rsync over ssh to copy up & down a lot of stuff nighlty between servers. On Monday, it all went to crap and won't work anymore. The rsync's just never finish. So I went ahead and tried to use scp to copy the stuff over manually.. and now IT times out! It transfers about 168KB, then goes "STALLED". If I have a file smaller than 168kb, it goes through the entire progress-meter, but then scp hangs, never returns, and the file it supposedly copied up is 0 length. No special parameters on the scp or anything, but I do get a weird message: scp * hughesm@apollo.tomsnyder.com:/data/www/htdocs/playtesting/ In my syslog... I don't anything weird. I've restarted ssh (making sure ALL the sshd processes died), I've killed off all the rsync processes. Interactive ssh seems to work fine. Production machines that can't really be rebooted. More SCSI hard drive woes

HI everybody, I recently sent a SCSI drive back to Hitachi for warranty replacement. In the interim, I purchased a Maxtor replacement drive. It has been working fine for about 2 weeks, and now this new drive is tossing read errors at me(!). Did I just get (un)lucky, or could something in my system be causing this? Some have suggested checking the power supply. I've run memtest and it passed for a 12 hour test. I've swapped ports on the 2-port SCSI card. I'm at a loss as to why this continues to occur. Mike, Just called 1-877-4-turing and they said there are no more "system 3.0" systems left and the "system 4.0" systems only come with 256MB RAM. Andy, thank you for the excellent talk and demo. The tools available to the linux community are top notch. The LTSP project is a prime example of that fact. I would like to suggest a talk on the OpenVPN project for the next meeting. I think it would be really cool if WLUG could sponser a project this winter that involved setting up a network w/ VPN, securing it and then attempting to hack it to find its vulnerabilities. This is probably a naive idea for many reasons...but I think many of us would be interested in learning the proper way of installing, securing, and maintaining our networks. From the WLUG home page, scroll down and click the link for "Past Meeting Information". For those of you who were unable to attend, I dare say you missed a good meeting. There were alot of questions and people really seemed interested in the topic. Fortunately, my client computer booted off of my laptop server just like it did when I left home. I even went out on a limb and attempted to get Doug Waud's computer working as a client, since the "live demo" concept seems to be a popular feature of WLUG meetings. I hadn't seen Doug's computer previously, but he did bring the proper network boot floppy. I "got Doug-ed" the first time (you've got to watch your cables and power cords around Doug) by a network cable that wasn't entirely plugged in. By the third attempt, his client booted with minor video artifacts, probably due to not using the correct XFree86 software. I'm soliciting ideas for the next meeting, which will be the first meeting of the year with the new crop of WPI students. I hope to have a great meeting planned so that the WPI students will continue to attend, as they constitute a sizeable percentage of the WLUG membership. Hi Everybody, This is a friendly reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting on Thursday, August 14, 2003, at 7:00 PM in Olin Hall on the WPI campus. Go into Olin Hall's front door, to the top of the stairs, and we'll be in the big lecture hall on the left. I'll be addressing the group at this meeting, and the topic will be the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP). Come and learn how to use your old, potentially obsolete hardware as a graphics terminal connected to a more powerful server. I'll demonstrate (live!) how a Pentium 90 with 48 MB of memory and a 10 Mbps ethernet connection could be used effectively as an LTSP client, running any Linux program that is installed on the server. I've also got a couple of those Linux Format magazines for raffle (one with a CD, the other with a DVD). I'll have sodas and cookies also for refreshments. After the meeting, we'll make our monthly pilgrimage to the Boynton Restaurant for pizza and beers. All are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee for admittance to a WLUG meeting. Hard drive crashed!

HI everybody, I've been out of touch all week due to a catastrophic hard drive failure. My hard drive is only 1.5 years old and its an IBM Ultrastar 18 GB SCSI drive with a 5 year warranty. IBM/Hitachi will be getting it back assuming it fails their diags, which I have to run as a prerequisite to getting an RMA. Naturally, they are DOS based diags. They have incredibly fussy rules about packing the drive for shipment, lest one voids one's warranty (say that three times fast). Believe it or not, it died while I was doing the tape backup!! I lost about 1 weeks worth of Quicken transactions and the photos from my sister's wedding (which I can recover from CDs previously burned for other family members). I got lucky. The moral of the story is: Make sure you do your backups! This is the 2nd hard drive that I've lost in the last 12 months (the first one was over 5 years old). I found what looks like the source files from a tar package in /usr/src/packages/BUILD/Python-2.2.3. It appears that I could build it by running the usual ./configure make ... process. There are no rpms in /usr/src/packages/RPMS/. Do I need to build the rpm from this? I have discovered that the files in the expat-devel package are already installed on the system so I ran rpmbuild --rebuild --nodeps .... It appeared to compile with a lot of warnings about anti-aliasing. Unfortunately the warnings scrolled out of the term buffer so I don't have the exact warning. This process is very verbose and I don't know if it completed successfully or not. When I query the rpm database it still shows the old version of python. What has me concerned is that there is an expat package and it is installed on the system, but I am still getting the missing expat-devel error. I have yet another question...when rebuilding the source rpm I get an error saying that I need the expat-devel libraries. My distribution either doesn't come with them or they are part of another package and I am not seeing it. If I download and rebuild the source rpm package for expat-devel from rpmfind.net what is the risk that it will break something on my system. I am using SuSE 8.2 and I found the rpm's on rpmfind.net. The distribution came with python 2.2.2 but I need python 2.2.3. I looked for new SuSE packages but did not find them. Hi, I am attempting to install the rpm python2-2.2.3-1 and get the following error: edev:/home/mlong # rpm -Uvh python2-2.2.3-1.i386.rpm error: failed dependencies: libcrypto.so.4 is needed by python2-2.2.3-1 libssl.so.4 is needed by python2-2.2.3-1 rpmlib(PartialHardlinkSets) <= 4.0.4-1 is needed by python2-2.2.3-1 I then tried updating openssl-0.9.6i-12 with openssl-0.9.7a-16 and got a large list of failed dependencies. The two files I need are a part of the latest openssl package. How should I go about resolving the python dependencies? Thanks, Mike

In many instances, it isn't possible due to the lack of Linux support from most educational software manufacturer. Yes, we could run Win4Lin and all that but that defeats one of the big arguments of client software cost. It also limits and confuses most school staff members who want to evaluate software. If I say, "Can't do it, we run Linux", guess what the next comment will be. In small or specialized environments, I can see great success with infiltrating Linux. In my district, we strive to make all clients identical so that it maximizes our investment. Students can go anywhere in the school and see the same functionality. For me at the moment, putting Linux in one of the labs would limit this flexibility. Linux desktop is not out of the question for schools, just not the best choice *AT THIS TIME* for all instances. If the school is not already heavily invested in Windows curriculum software then some of the many Linux choices would be a good offering. We, for instance, use a $800/PC Windows math program to help boost our students' MCAS scores. We also require all our Sophomores to have a full year of MS Office which they also get a certificate of completion. Like everywhere else, there are politics that go along with technology decisions. Cost, along with "what are the other districts our size doing" are the two big questions you will be confronted with. I have the fortunate situation where I am allowed the freedom to make the best choice for our district. Right now, its a combination of Linux and Windows. If the situation arose that a Linux desktop would be the best choice for the user, then Linux it will be. In fact, that may not be too far off judging from the number of students I've heard of running Linux at home. If anyone else is interested in discussing this subject further, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm glad to see any enthusiasm in bringing OpenSource to schools. - Rob

SLIPS MA Open Source Bill

New to the list, and wanted to know what you all thought. I'm looking to put together a bill that will require state gov to consider OSS when sending out RFP's. The bill would mirror those being proposed/stalled in other states such as Washington and Texas. I have been in contact with state Rep Robert Spellane who is positive about the subject. I believe he would be more responsive if the WLUG were also supporting this. Further more I think It would be interesting to get involved with public schools in Worcester to promote the use of Linux. I put up a small page on my web site to address this topic, which I have called SLIPS (Supporting Linux In Public Schools). (btw.. I think the next LUG topic should include LTSP! WLUG Meeting - Thurs. August 14th - 7PM

HI Everybody, I'm going to announce this meeting "early" (at least relative to most of our meeting announcements) in the hope that it will whet your Linux appetite and entice you to attend this meeting. The meeting topic will be the Linux Terminal Server Project (http://www.ltsp.org) The speaker will be your fearless leader, Andy Stewart. With the use of this software, a person can create a network of computers which uses one powerful server and any number of less powerful diskless client computers. A user would log into the client computer, and would be doing all of their work on the more powerful server transparently. Some advantages to this technique are: - maintenance is largely localized to the server - reuse of old, otherwise obsolete, equipment - security concerns are localized to the server - control over what users can access One disadvantage: - if the sever dies, everybody is dead No doubt you're asking: - how can I boot Linux on a diskless computer? - how is it that I do my work on the server? - why is system management easier with this configuration? - in what practical situation is this configuration advantageous? The answers to those questions, and many more, will be forthcoming at the meeting. I will prepare slides for the meeting which I'll put on the WLUG website afterwards. I will also walk through the many files required to setup this configuration. A live demo will be part of the meeting. To make this a bit more interesting, I'd like to ask a few people to bring in some equipment to help me (please RSVP to me to insure that we have enough of the right things): - a multisync monitor with 1024x768@72Hz capability (my spare died) - a 10/100 network hub or switch - some Ethernet cables - one or two other client machines: - could be laptops with network capability and bootable floppy - at least a P90 with 32 MB of memory, bootable floppy, video, network, etc. My hope is that we could demo 2-3 working clients off of my laptop server. Thanks for all the feedback. I used YaST (SuSE's configuration tool) to configured the interface with a static IP and entered in the ip addresses of the dns servers that the router is using. Hopefully the dns servers have static ip's. Cheers, Mike

Linksys Router

Hi All, I have a linksys router that is acting as a dhcp server. The last firmware upgrade has change the lease time options to allow a lease to expire between 1-99999 minutes. Occasionally one of my boxes gets assigned a different IP address which invalidates the port forwarding rules. I would prefer to use static IP's but I am depending on my isp (verizon dsl) provider for their dns servers and they serve me with a dynamic address which changes reqularly. My initial thought is to write a script that checks the IP of my box and if it has changed, use links to update the port forwarding rules on the router by sending the appropriate URL to the router. Any other solutions, workarounds, hints or feedback are welcome. thanks, Mike

There are a couple of ways to do this: a) load and run a Knoppix CD with no hard drive b) LTSP - Linux Terminal Server Project If people are interested, I could give a talk / demo of some basic LTSP stuff. I've got it working between a lame P90 and my laptop server. Let me know if you have other ideas, or if this idea sounds like something interesting to you. kernel choices in Debian

I'm planning on wiping out my SuSE 7.2 installation and trying Debian 3.0r0. The install manual says that kernel 2.2 is the default, and kernel 2.4 is an option. I can't find anywhere that says why I should choose one over the other. My SuSE is already using 2.4. Seems like it would be a step backward to install the default 2.2. Any ideas or suggestions? X is freezing

Hi, When uptime reaches around three days, somehow a weird situation is happening. X usage suddenly jumps around 99% freezing the X environment. X seems to have frozen, but I can move the mouse pointer. Nothing else can be done. I log on to this machine from another one on the local area network using ssh, and reboot it for a temporary solution. If I restart only the X server, I believe it doesn't take that long to have the problem again. a total reboot gives me another 2-3 days. as soon as it freezes, connecting to this machine from the other one, I tried looking at the log files under /var/log several times. no entry has been added to xfree log in the last 10-15 minutes. and the files which have been modified in 15 minutes does not have any entries relating to the situaion, at least to my knowledge. suspecting the ram of this partially new system, I checked my rams with memtest-86-3.0. no problems are reported. suspecting the gdm, I tried without it as well. problem regenerates as usual. I don't know whether it is related but, another strange issue I am having is that: with or without gdm, sometime(not soon) after X login "alt" key starts not functioning. for example, alt+shift cannot change the keyboard layout or ctrl+alt+f{1-6} cannot take me to the consol and of course I cannot kill the X server using ctrl+alt+backspace. motherboard: Asus A7N8X cpu: AMD Athlon 2500+ video card: creative tnt2ultra 2X video driver: nvidia distro: slackware 9.0 ram: 512MB swap: 256MB Do you have any ideas? where would you think I should start from? thank you, baris

SCO is getting greedy...

I got this as part of a mailing list for Information Week. I thought you would find it interesting. It's worth noting that SCO is working on THEIR SAY-SO. It is my personal opinion that any company that cowers and pays SCO just because they are using Linux is foolish. IANAL. It would be very much like some company deciding they wanted to bill you for services they didn't render. Would YOU pay that bill? If you haven't been following this story, SCO is the current owner of the Unix source code. They CLAIM that some of the System V source code made it into the Linux kernel, a claim that has not yet been substantiated. SCO has not (yet) publicly shown their "evidence". To date, the only way to see the source of their claims (no pun intended) is to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Many of the people that have agreed to SCO's requirements aren't technically savvy. Most of the people that WOULD know what they were looking at are either not interested in signing anything (like an NDA), or they just don't think that SCO has a leg to stand on. SCO themselves think that most of the Linux community will laugh in their (SCO's) face. mozilla can't find my mail

My filesystem got crunched, and mozilla stopped seeing all my mail messages and accounts. I tried re-installing (1.3) and it still doesn't see anything. I got this error message - error occurred reading the startup config file line 258 SyntaxError: unterminated long string literal. user_pref("mail.newsrc_root"), "home/avedis/.mozi# HTTP Cookie File I'm not clear on what or where the startup config file is. Is there an easy way to save this? I'm probably going to upgrade from SuSE 7.2 to Debian 3 in about a week, so maybe it doesn't matter. I have backup copies of all my mail files on another drive, and I hope to resurrect those after I re-install everything. Instructions for doing that might be more useful. Thanks. Greg

installation of nVidia TNT2 M64 PCI video card

Hi, I have just installed the above card along side my existing AGP video card. I rebooting using the AGP card and ran Yast2 (SuSE's configuration tool) in order to configure it. Everything seemed to go well. I then rebooted the system, went into the bios and told it to boot using the PCI video card. The system detected the card. Just as SuSE started to boot the system hung right after displaying *GRUB Loading Stage2*. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be appreciated. The system specs: SuSE 8.2 (clean install as of last week) ABIT KT7/KT7-RAID motherboard 800 mhz AMD Athlon 512mb RAM ATI Rage 128 AGP video (old) nVidia TNT2 M64 PCI video (new) Thanks, Mike

I have successfully set up spamassassin on my Red Hat 8 box but I thought I'd try to install a new version so I could use the Bayesian filters. **************** Old version: After installing the rpm, all I needed was a .forward file: "| /usr/bin/spamassassin || exit 75" and I also needed to add a sym link to spamassassin in the /etc/smrsh directory. It worked fine. **************** New version 2.44 and 2.55 (I got the 2.44 from Red Hat 9, I got the 2.55 from the spamassassin web site): My email just disappears, but there are some words about needing to use procmail to invoke spamassassin. So, I changed my .forward: "|IFS=' ' && exec /usr/bin/procmail -f- || exit 75 #bcurran" And, I added a .procmailrc: :0fw: spamassassin.lock | /usr/bin/spamassassin I added /usr/bin/procmail symlink to /etc/smrsh. Seting up IPSec

Hi, I'd like to try setting up a FreeS/Wan IPSec tunnel between my network and anyone who has a static IP address for test purposes. My cable connection is assigned by DHCP, but I have a registered name for the address, sgaede.ne.client2.attbi.com. On my private subnet, I have a second PC. I can run Win98, W2K, and a couple flavors of Linux on my gateway, and Linux / Win98 on my private subnet. I've tried setting up a connection between the two boxes, but it fails because the two machines are on the same subnet... Anyone interested? Thanks, Skip

Looking for PHP/Forms help

Hi All, I've been working on a database with a web interface for the past few years in my spare time, and as you can guess, I haven't had much time lately, and they people I'm doing this for would like to get it wrapped up if possible. I'm looking for someone to help me understand/write PHP code (possibly using PHPLIB and oohforms) to add/edit/delete records in a MySQL database. This isn't really hard, except that I need to be able to add/edit varying numbers of fields in each record. For a better example, take a look at: http://jfs.ecotarium.org/AAS/john/sql-search.php and search for the name "Anderson". As you can see, records can have varying numbers of Roles, References, Addresses, etc. The searching of the DB is working just fine, as you can see, it really just needs some tweaking on the search form side, but the core is all there. I've been beating my head out with the PHPLIB oohforms stuff to try and make it so I can start out with a basic record: heading, ref, role, authority number, note and address. I need to be able to allow the user to add additional roles, references, and addresses when adding records. So does anyone out there have either: 1. good oohforms examples? 2. good ideas on what other PHP libraries I can use to make my life simpler, or ideally some code I can steal, file off the serial numbers, and re-work to do what I need? I tried playing around on the net and I didn't find it in the first 100 links on google so I was wondering if anyone out there might know this. You could of just used either knoppix or cool kinux to boot of the CD drive, no need to install suse just to run reiserfsck. I have bough becuase for soem reason one works one some of my computer while ther other oen does not, dont quite understand. I ended up buying SuSE 8.2 and installing it on another drive. I then used reiserfsck that came with it to repair the partition. Big mistake, the data was lost. Now I am off to rebuild my system from backups. :(

I got the bright idea...finally...to look at the boot partition (hdb5). I ran badblock and it came back with no bad blocks. Next reiserfsck --fix-fixable /dev/hda5 was run with the following results: reiserfs_open: bitmap 0 was marked free reiserfs_open: first bitmap looks corrupted Analyzing journal..Segmentation fault Could this be why my drives are mounting as readonly? How do I correct this problem? Up to this point I have only installed SuSE and upgraded my system with SuSE upgrade tools. I am now in the process of learning how file systems work so I might as well learn how to build and install a new kernel. I have 2 disks in my system. Disk 1(hda) has windows and SuSE7.3 installed on it. Disk 2(hdb) has SuSE 8.0. When booting SuSE8.0 it mounts the partition hdb7 ("/") as readonly. This was not the case until the system was rebooted last week. Prior to the reboot I could read and write to the partition. I was out of town when I started having connectivity issues and had the wife reboot the machine. I had ownly been accessing the machine for email and file storage and don't know what has changed. When booting into SuSE 7.3 I can mount hdb7 as rw. I believe the problem has something to do with the boot process but am not sure. I have now been able to boot the system using another drive. The original boot drive (hda7) can be mounted successfully with the following fstab configuration: /dev/hda7 /data2 reiserfs noauto,user 0 0 When reiserfsck /data2 is run I get the following messages: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs format found on /data2 reiserfsck: --rebuild-sb may restore reiserfs super block What are the ramifications of running this? Is this something that can cause the data on the disk to be lost? Thanks for any help, Mike

Help! System booting as readonly

While away on business I lost the ability to ssh into my computer. I had my wife ping it from within the home network and she was unable to. After walking her through some ifconfig diagnostics (she is a technically challanged individual) I next had her reboot the box in the hope that it would "fix" the problem. It did not solve the problem. Now that I am home I see that it is mounting the drives as readonly. The following is a partial listing of the dmesg: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2 VFS: Mounted root (reiserfs filesystem) readonly Trying to move old root to /initrd ... failed Unmounting old root clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS How do I go about diagnosing and fixing this problem? Hi all, I've just re-compilled all the system's need such as openssl, php and its need, etc. Here, I got a problem like this : [root@voyager named]# ftp 192.168.21.22 Connected to 192.168.21.22 (192.168.21.22). 530 TLS subsystem failed. ftp> Can you please inform me what was wrong with this ? Is it a kind of problem which caused by openssl upgrade ? How can I solve this ? In fact, I get a slow connection too when accessing local mail using browser. I can send and receive mail fast using outlook. Thanks.

whois question

Is there a way to do a whois search for a registrants name, and get all the domains registered in that name? I checked the RIPE help file (whois -h whois.ripe.net HELP), but I don't understand it. I figure there's some way to do an inverse search with the -i switch, but it's not doing what I want it to do. Thanks. Greg

CD/DVD-ROM question

I just noticed that my boot message tells me that my CD-ROM and CDRW drives are also DVD-ROM. I wasn't aware that either of them had that capability when I bought them. All those spam messages about reading DVD from my CD-ROM went in the trash without being read, so now I'm wondering. Is it possible to read a DVD on a CD drive? If so, how? If not, why does the boot message say that? Thanks. Greg

Flaky disks or controller?

HI Everybody, Having recently rebuilt my "good" computer, I'm now seeing a bunch of disk I/O errors in my system log. I have 3 SCSI disks connected to a Symbios controller using the sym53c8xx module and a 2.4.20 kernel. At first, I suspected an individual drive, as it is nearly 4 years old, and all of the errors were there. I have since physically removed that drive, and now the other drives are logging errors rather sporatically. Typically, I see an error message from reiserfs about how it couldn't write to the drive, and a disk I/O error in the log. The system is then wedged and requires a reboot. With the problem showing up on all 3 SCSI drives, I'm now suspicious of the (used) controller which I received as a "present" from a guy at work. If it should be the controller, do you folks have recommendations about reasonably priced SCSI controllers? I have 6 SCSI devices in my system and I need 68-pin as well as 50-pin capabilities. One of my disks is U160, and I think the others are slower, but with disks always getting faster, I'd probably want a U160 controller. I don't think I want to pay the premium for a U320 controller. Linux and wireless 802.11b

I haven't had any luck getting a Netgear MA401 802.11b PCMCIA card working. I'm using RH 7.3 (2.4.18 kernel). I rebuilt the kernel to turn on support for the card, but I can't get a connection to my access point (a Netgear WG602). The kernel boots and tries to start the eth0 interface, which doesn't exist, since there's no CAT5 cable pluggeg into the ethernet port. The output of ifconfig shows the only interface that's up is the loopback (lo) interface. I have an HP Pavilion zt1180 laptop. Is there anything else I need to do? rpm problems

when i do rpm --rebuilddb it hangs. I have to do a kill -9 to fix it. I can't install any rpm's If i reboot my box I can use RPM again. however only to install one rpm. After that, i must reboot again to use another rpm. Old drive - new machine?

I have a RedHat 7.3 server that is sick. It would appear that there are all kinds of hard disk errors but I don't think its the hard drive because its done it with two new hard drives. I'm guessing its the on-motherboard disk controller. It will boot up okay, but after a (steadily decreasing) amount of time the errors begin again and the hard drive light stays on. The question is: the motherboard is an old Socket-7 AT Epox which I can't replace exactly -- what are the issues involved with swapping the drive (which I believe is okay) into a new machine with a different motherboard, without reloading RH 7.3 or my data?

NEW Pioneer DVD-RW A05 for sale

Folks, Ever made a mistake? I did. I purchased a new DVD-RW drive to replace the unit I thought was defective. After the unit arrived (Thursday) I subsequently trace the problem to an intermittent IDE cable. I'd like to sell the new one if anyone's in the market.
