At pizza we were talking about other web videos of people doing entertaining and dangerous things. The Mythbusters' disappearing cement truck is hard to top. Here was my favorite example, this guy uses 3 to 5 gallons of liquid oxygen to start your charcoal grill. He does it in shirt sleeves with a 5 gal bucket. Possible sendmail attack?

I have four servers on 3 different DSL lines running RedHat 7.3 with sendmail 8.11.6 I was on vacation at the time, but mid-day (13:00) on January 9th all of them started behaving wierdly. Instead of the occassional email, perhaps 95% of all incoming emails now show in the log as follows: Jan 9 09:41:17 bach sendmail[25179]: NOQUEUE: mail5.schaeffer.com [24.106.95.27] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA Jan 11 00:02:12 bach sendmail[14018]: NOQUEUE: h11009.upc-h.chello.nl [62.194.11.9] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA Jan 11 00:10:44 bach sendmail[14127]: NOQUEUE: bay0-omc2-s35.bay0.hotmail.com [65.54.246.171] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA Jan 11 00:13:23 bach sendmail[14148]: NOQUEUE: root@localhost did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA Jan 11 00:13:50 bach sendmail[14151]: NOQUEUE: 84.95.106.53.cable.012.net.il [84.95.106.53] did notissue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA The first one is legitimate mail, the others appear to be spam Much of the 50K pieces/month of spam I get are being trapped at the server in this manner before even getting to my spam filters (a good thing), but while some legitimate email is getting through, some is being rejected with this kind of message. Does anyone (a) have any idea what's happening here (b) have any idea how to fix it. Need more info? Just ask. Dick

Any GIMP experts here? Is there a way to extract the differences between two images? I have an image of just a background and an image of item on said background. Hmmm weird. I just tried to install cpufrequtils on my box and I didn't run into that problem. Sounds like a fluke to me. Try deleting the package from the cache '/var/cache/apt/archives' and reinstalling as Aaron detailed. I ran Kubuntu for a bit and switched back to Ubuntu as I find the integration is much better. But under the hood they should be the same system. When I was running Kubuntu I did find that it already had a cpufreq tool built into its power management. cpufrequtils is in universe and would be an add on. I know Ubuntu's Gnome package manager, Synaptic, has a "fix broken packages" option which may also fix this problem. Can't find files filling up disk

Hi all, I'm getting warnings that one of my drives is 90% full but I can't find the files filling it up. Problem w/gcc

My laptop has been doing weird stuff lately. I built it a while ago from Gentoo 2006.0 Stage 3, and every now and again it would turn off while compiling something (usually if I had to upgrade glibc). I was just trying to update mythtv and it crashed so I decided to level it and start from scratch. I installed Gentoo 2006.1 Stage 3 and it's doing the same thing. I went down to Stage 2 and I'm still having a problem. I've done memtest in the past with clean results, but I'm stuck because I don't know what the error is. While building a few minutes ago I forgot to turn on swap space and it ran out of memory before crashing (turning off). Is there anything I can do aside from piping the output to a file to capture what the problem might be (tried it, not much help)? Has anybody had similar problems with gcc / glibc? Most laptops have some kind of temperature shut off function.. I would monitor your temperature with lmsensors, or mbmon (acpi temp zone). For me to control my Gentoo laptop temperature while compiling big packages, I have to have cpu frequency scaling running. If i run my 2.8ghz P4 laptop at 50% speed 1.4Ghz I don't have any temperature problems. I usually use the "powersave" or "ondemand" shedulers. Also you could try keeping a big enough space blow your laptop for air.. looking for a PCI graphics card

Thanks to all who found/offered a PCI graphics card. My problem has been solved, even though it hasn't been really understood. A friend found a card of unknown condition, and I tried it. As expected, the motherboard graphics became inactive when I booted with the PCI card. However, the PCI card didn't work either. (It's that "unknown condition" thing, I think.) After a couple of power cycles, I removed the PCI card, and, magically, the motherboard graphics began to work. I don't see anything new in the X config, so I can only think that the system reset the motherboard graphics card back to a functional state. If anyone has a better theory, I'd like to hear it. I stumbled across bug #48545 (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/control-center/+bug/48545) when sound wouldn't work only for the "primary" user ('me') ... it *did* work for the other users on this computer, including others with access to root. The fix is to add 'me' to the audio line in /etc/group: audio:x:29:user1,user2,user3,me In the meantime, I noticed there were several lines in this file which included all users except 'me'. So here's the question: should I add 'me' to all such lines? Seems too crude ... and there must be some file "upstream" that would lead to 'me' being left off in the first place ?? Thanks, Doug

looking for a PCI graphics card

The graphics (motherboard) on my linux box have stoped... I still have an ascii screen, but no graphics. (No errors in any logs, so I suspect a hardware failure.) I'm looking for a cheap PCI graphics card to see if that fixes the problem. Even a loaner would help. Thanks, Bill

Linksys Router

I recently upgraded my router to a WRT45GS and have been having a bear of a time trying to figure out why, when I boot Linux, I can't get an IP address from the router but with Windows I can. It worked with the old router. It works with Windows. There are no DHCP tweaks in the router. What the hell is wrong? Turns out that there a bug in the router. It doesn't like Linux-based DHCP requests. This is a known issue and apparently Linksys has no intention of fixing it. But they did release a Linux-compatible version of the router instead. So my options are to either by the Linux-compatible version or find another brand that supports Linux (or better, doesn't exclude Linux) and is as good wireless performance-wise as the Linksys routers. Any recommendations? I know there is an open source firmware product that can be applied, but I'm not ready to try that yet as I work from home a lot and I'm in the middle of an important project so I need a stable VPN connection right now. -- Gary

kernel / video problem

Some kind of email loop started on my system yesterday that generated a huge inbox (> 20 GB) on my system. It was detecting a relay loop and then emailing the error which triggered another one. Each email was larger than the last because it contained an account of all the previous errors. After cleaning everything up, I rebooted because some processes had failed due to lack of memory. After rebooting to runlevel 5, I could not get back to graphics mode, at least a visible graphics screen. Although I can sometimes get a graphics screen showing boot progress, it never gets to the splash screen. Everything from the text/console screens looks normal. I have not found any errors in the system log. I've tried switching monitors, and get the same result. I solved my Fedora Core 6 sound card problem. I found and rpm'd these files: alsa-driver-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.i386.rpm alsa-kmdl-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.i586.rpm For some reason alsa files are not part of: <http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/6/i386/> Similarly my 'yum' can not find them. Now I can not remember where I did find them. Why was this so difficult? What is it that I do not understand about the Fedora packages? Some folks told me that ALSA was part of Core 6. I was using ALSA with Core 4. I thank you all for your efforts :-) Ken Jones

When I first installed CORE 6 it booted just fine. Now it hangs and gives the message snipped below. If I do [CNTRL C] it finishes. It says that it can not find Linux/version.h where it thinks it should be. I have erased the kernel-devel package. Why is it trying to compile? It is referring to a SMP version. I do not see the string SMP anywhere in the REDHAT download page <http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/6/i386/>. What do you think is going on? Mythtv Packages

Hi All, I'm trying to build a Mythtv box, and I'd like to know where I can find either the 0.19 or 0.20 Mythtv packages for Ubuntu "Dapper". I've looked around and all I can find are the 0.18 packages. The 0.19 version has been out for a while and I guess the 0.20 version is still sort of 'bleeding' edge. I have a SoundBlaster Live sound card. The driver is emu10k1. ALSA provides some modules that need to be built into the kernel. No matter what I do the builds can not find the appropriate version.h file. I am trying to build the kernel from kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6. Previous Core versions provided a kernel-source rpm. Core 6 does not. This time it is called kernel-devel. Something is very different. email problem

I'm having a problem with email bouncing to verizon.net addresses, and I suspect some other servers may be deleting it entirely. My config... I'm using mutt, which delivers to a local smtp server. My machine has a fake domain name (mills.curran), since I'm on a NAT'ed firewall. I route/relay my email through a web services provider with my own domain name (mills-curran.net) on a static IP. I know the issue is not a blacklisting, because the email gets delivered if I use the web interface for email at the mills-curran.net site. I suspect that verizon.net doesn't like the fact that the email header includes records including the fake mills.curran domain. I've tried some sendmail configuration changes with no success. Using Knoppix to copy an NTFS drive

Hi All, I have a drive that sounds like it's about to fail (making strange noises and occasionally not booting), so I want to copy it to another identical drive. The drive has 1 NTFS partition on it - I very occasionally run Win2k. I booted up the 5.0 KNOPPIX CD and tried dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb. There were no error messages and after about 30 minutes the 'dd' finished. However from KNOPPIX, I can't mount the new drive. the mount command (sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/hdb1 /media/hdb1) fails with: "Couldn't mount device '/dev/hdb1'. input/output error - mount failed". The original drive (/dev/hda1) mounts without any problem. If I use the fdisk utility and look at the partition table, there are no differences between the hda and hdb drives. Any ideas how I can solve this problem?? BTW: The qtparted utility on the KNOPPIX 5.0 CD and DVD fails with a "floating point exception" error. TIA, -Chuck

Hi all, My organization is considering submitting an application to the FCC for a non-commercial full power radio station. An FCC window for applications will open sometime in early 2007. I need an engineer who has the resources and willingness to help us with this. I know there is mapping of spectrum involved and I know we must submit engineering data to the FCC with our application. I just don't know any engineers who can do this, so I thought I'd toss it out here. Our agency is a non-profit PEG station located in Athol, Massachusetts. We need to find alternatives to communications because the future of cable access television is constantly in jeopardy. I can explain more if you like. Any resources you might be able to offer would be great. We do have a small stipend we can offer, so it's not a totally freebie job. Xandros/Debian newbie question

Being a trusting fellow and having faith in Tux magazine in particular, I decided to spend $60 on Xandros 4 Desktop Linux, based on a review in the Septmeber issue. >From the review it appeared that Xandros was like a better version of Freespire/Linspire: even more useful software like RealPlayer out of the box, better documentation and support, and at least as easy to ise. Whatever software wasn't included directly in the distro, I figured, would be available with one or two clicks from Xandros networks- or at least from Debian. Problem is, there seems to be very little software available from Xandros networks (maybe 50 packages), and my 4 year old daughter's favorite software gcompris is not available. (By the way, she's going to get her own computer soon, and she says she would never run Windows, only Linux.) Xandros warns you against selecting any other repository other than their own, yet I (recklessly?)selected the "unsupprted debian site" as a second repository- but with no luck - still no gcompris and few choices. Truecrypt and Backups

Hi there, These two topics are completely unrelated. I was going to mention this tonight but it slipped my mind... A) I was curious if anyone is or has use(d) the truecrypt file system (truecrypt.org) If so do you have any recommendations or possible alternatives. I am thinking of using truecrypt for a partition on a USB thumb drive. B) Backups -- Giving finite resources/knowledge what software do people use to do full backups? Simple is better. And drive images are an option. I'm actually proxying this question for someone not on this list. Any insight is useful. Looking for a new system

Guys, I've been looking around for a new system at home, basically to act as a file server (NFS, Samba) and backup server using Bacula. It also needs to run http and mysql and other daemons as needed. I'd like to get at least a pair of 250gb drives to mirror them for storage, with LVM volumes on top. And of course room for expansion to another pair of drives down the line. But I'd like it smallish and quiet as well. Oh yeah, it needs to have a PCI slot for a SCSI controller, since my tape drive is SCSI for backups. Desires: - small - cheap - quiet - low power - boots without a keyboard/mouse needed at all - onboard video (don't really need it at all) - PCI slots for expansion - four 3.5" drive bays internally - SATA ports on board - AMD or VIA EPIA - 1Gb of RAM or more. I've looked at the Via EPIA style systems. Just not sure if they have enough oomph for what I want. The other thought is to just take my old Dell Precision dual cpu Xeon 550mhz box and make that my main server, holding all my data, etc. It's got the drive bays, and PCI slots and scsi controller all in there already. I could add in some SATA controllers for the new disks without a problem. And it would continue to hold my ISA 8-port serial card. And it's got the memory for what it would be doing pretty much as well. Then I'd just get a new system for my desktop with a much smaller disk drive. A friend of mine just got a used notebook computer, but it has no AC adapter, and the battery is dead. He'd like to test it out before he invests any significant money into it. I'm wondering if anyone has an AC adapter for a Dell Inspiron 18000 and would be willing to bring it to the meeting, so we can see if this thing will fire up. I'm trying to install Altova XMLSpy, following instructions at http://www.altova.com/support_platform_linux.html and saw the comment: "Copy the complete 2006 Relewase 4 installation directory from Windows to the Linux partition (this avoids any installer-related issues); this should be an installation where you have already requested/purchased and entered a key-code, because the key-code request mechanism doesn’t currently work under WINE." so I guess I follow the rules and enter the key-code I have in hand using Windows to enter the key-code, then "Copy the complete 2006 ..." etc etc Any better ideas? Greg Avedissian mentioned the Smart package manager (http://labix.org/smart) as an alternative, so I gave it a try. The Smart package manager appears to be Linux distribution agnostic. It works on systems whose package management is based on RPM, APT, APT-RPM, YUM, etc. I tried it on my laptop, where I was having the most performance issues with YaST's software handling program. I haven't yet installed the Smart package manager on my "good" system, but I probably will if Novell doesn't fix YaST in OpenSuSE 10.2. Software to use with APC UPS?

I've acquired an APC SmartUPS and plugged it into my server that runs Debian 3.1 (sarge). The Powerchute disc that came with it says it has versions for Red Hat, SuSE, TurboLinux, and a couple other distros, but they don't mention Debian. I haven't looked at the contents of the CD yet, but I bet there are some interesting alternatives from other sources than APC. What software would you guys suggest I try with the UPS? I don't have X installed on the server, so command-line is the way to go, but a web interface would be neat! -- Rich

Hi every1, Thanks a lot for replying so quickly. I know Intel has released proprietary source code drivers for my wireless card but compiling it is such a lot of hassle it needs ieee but my system says ieee is already installed. Ndiswrapper on the other hand is easier to setup. As for the certificates yes definitely I have downloaded both and linked them in the conf file. I am pretty sure it is not a driver problem since the error comes as 'authentication timed out.' The light for Wifi also blinks frequently when the driver is configured so maybe that also suggests that the drive is properly installed. Hi every1, I am glad to know there is a local linux community alive. I was really looking forward to joining the WPI linux association but couldn't find anything related at the activities fair at WPI. Could anyone tell me their website, when their meetings are, or perhaps can I meet a member from the association? Secondly, to setup wireless connection with WPI on-campus, I followed the instructions on a WPI webpage (a private one-i googled my problem and came up with this but sadly it isn't appearing now) and the CCC webpage but to no avail. Could anyone help me out with this-please? Anyways I would really like to meet any linux dudes like me so just drop by anytime you like-I am at Institute Hall 105. I don't know whether this would help, but here's what I did to setup the wireless: 1. installed ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant 2. setup the driver using ndiswrapper and intel 3945 driver's inf file 3. Configured ifconfig and iwconfig for wlan0 4. Ran the following command: wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -i wlan0 -D ndiswrapper It's here I run into problems-I get the following output: ioctl[SIOCSIWSCAN]: Resource temporarily unavailable Failed to initiate AP scan. Trying to associate with 00:15:e8:df:ad:40 (SSID='WPI-Wireless' freq=0 MHz) Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out. CTRL-EVENT-TERMINATING - signal 2 received Failed to disable WPA in the driver. ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Resource temporarily unavailable Am I doing something wrong? Do you have any suggestions. Never mind. Got my answer from Novell's website. My "other thought" was indeed correct. There's tons more software on the 2 DVD's than on the 5 CD's. The Novell web page even lists *exactly* which packages the CD's don't contain. I don't have a DVD drive on the Suse Linux 9.2 laptop, but I was able to read the Inkscape .rpm file on my Windows laptop which *does* have a DVD drive. Then I ftp'd the file to my Linux laptop and did an install from a local directory. I have SUSE 10 installed, and I'm sure it's on the DVD (though I already had Inkscape installed under 9.2.) If it's not there, it's easily available at Inkscape. In fact, it might be better to download it because the version on the 9.n distribution set would not be the latest and greatest. HW

There are several things I want to mention... First, I was talking to someone about accessing the RAZR from Linux via USB. (Sorry-- I'm terrible with names.) The program that I use is moto4lin, and is available for free from SourceForge at: http://moto4lin.sourceforge.net/wiki/Main_Page . One may (or may not) need p2kmoto, which is available from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/moto4lin (the information is available from the main page). All-told, the installation of both parts are covered in the documentation, and it's pretty straight-forward. Second, I had asked several about Ruby tutorials, and mentioned that I found one source that was a bit... ...odd, though I couldn't remember the name of it. Someone at the cook-out mentioned they were using bacula for backups. I have just installed it and I have a DLT tape drive. I have it confugered OK and i can connect to my fd (client) and my sd (storage device). To keep things simple, lets say that I am doing everything on one server. I can label the tapes and even backup to my "File" device. My question is, what/where do I build a list of jobs to run? Lets say I want a "Full" backup of the system, and a seperate backup of just /home. Where do these jobs get defined, etc etc etc. This seems to be the only piece I am missing in the doc's. thanks mike

ALSA - mic trouble

Hi, When I first set up my Ubuntu machine, everything worked fine. But for the last few months (I don't remember exactly how long), my mic has refused to work. Nothing I use can pick up any signal from it. I've tried all the mixers (alsamixer, kmix, the built in GNOME mixer), and none of them show the mic as muted. Is there a way to reset ALSA's volumes and other mixer settings to defaults? I can't seem to find information about this online, and this lack of a fully working sound system has me on the end of my rope. I tried this: iptables -I INPUT -m mac --mac-source uu:vv:ww:xx:yy:zz -j LOG - --log-prefix "Laptop Detected: " That worked fine. I saw the appropriate log entry when my laptop ping'd the firewall. The log entry showed the expected mac address of my laptop. At that time, my laptop was plugged into my home network, which is connected to the "internal" interface of my firewall. I then setup iptables to log all incoming packets from the firewall's external interface, and I noticed that in the log all incoming mac source addresses are the same. I didn't expect this. The address is 00:0b:bf:xx:xx:xx, which I think is a piece of Cisco hardware, and I don't have any Cisco hardware at home. Is this some hardware from my ISP ? I'm guessing somebody is rewriting the packets to replace the source mac address, but clearly my knowledge of this is lacking, and thus I'm confused. Any helpers? Everyone: It is hard to believe that X is the problem. It came with Fedora 4 and no one else seems to be reporting it as a bug. I have another Fedora 4 machine that does not display this swap space problem. Karl's idea of looking carefully at my drivers is a good one. This machine has more than one special driver. It is late now. I am tired. I shall pursue this track tomorrow or Friday. If anyone else is interested in the cut and paste of ps auxw lspci uname -a lsmod vmstat dmesg tell me. I have setup a few servers with 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB doing NFS, mainly for video streaming and at most 15-20 NFS clients. Using kernel 2.6.15.7 for a while now with no performance complaints. I have seen 15 NFS clients streaming DVD quality mpeg2 video (9mbps) work nicely. Anyone have suggestions? i need: * >= 5TB disk space * iSCSI, ATA over Ethernet, or NFS mountable to linux >= 2.6.15 *RAID (must survive single disk failure) and must know when a failure happened. * $$/TB is important. * Must be able to sustain minimum 10MB/s disk read on Gbit network. normally these will be big multimedia files. Thanks for all the suggestions from the group. There were several requests for a more clear description of the setup. Here it is: Verizon FIOS DSL <=> Actiontek router (192.168.1.1) <=> LinkSys router (192.168.1.20 <=> 192.168.2.1) Linux box (with samba printer): 192.168.1.14 windows box (needing to print): 192.168.2.200 The fix: 1. Enable printing from 192.168.2.x in the samba setup. (I'm not sure that helped, because the LinkSys router was set up as a gateway, thus the print request showed up from 192.168.1.20.) 2. Set up a route to the 192.168.2.x network on my linux box. 3. Lots of mucking around with the LinkSys. I also opened it up to all outside access. I also set "dynamic routing". 4. Whacked at the windows box quite a bit. It finally (magically?) started working. Unresolved questions: 1. What did I do to make it work? 2. Why do I need to keep the LinkSys set with the "gateway" rather than the "router" setting? If I set "router", then I can access between the 2 networks nicely, but the 192.168.2.x will not route to the internet. Maybe I needed a static route? It would be nice to understand what was the key. I'd also like to understand how to set the LinkSys as a router rather than a gateway, but at least it works and my wife is no longer reminding me how much linux messes things up. :-) Thanks, Bill

router/printing problems

I have a home network with 2 routers. My 192.168.2.x network has a couple of windows boxes (some wireless) behind a linkSys router. This network feeds to my 192.168.1.x network which connects to the internet through a second router. My linux box (samba print server) is on the 192.168.1.x network and has a static IP. I just moved to this setup when I got Verizon FIOS. (Their wireless router has poor range.) Problem. Since moving, I can't print to the samba-served printer from the windows boxes. I have modified samba to accept connections from the 192.168.2.x machines. Here's my samba log for the machine that tries to print. DNS and PPP

The connection between the computer and the firewall is ethernet (eth0), and it also works fine. My problem is that I can't get the palmtx to get dns responses back from the dns server. I ran ethereal on eth0 and ppp0. I can see the DNS query go from the palmtx to the computer, and out to the firewall on eth0. The firewall responds onto eth0, but the computer doesn't seem to be sending that back to the palmtx on ppp0. On the computer, routing is enabled (or the dns server wouldn't have seen the initial request). The route table has the entry (1st in the list) for the PPP connection. iptables is set to accept everything. What did I miss? Thanks! Would somebody please explain to me what exactly FUSE does? I succeeded in using fusexmp to mount my root directory into /tmp/fuse2.5.3/example. I also succeeded in unmounting with fusermount -u. I do not understand why I should want to. This all started when I upgraded the kernel and the type ntfs file system on the other half of my dual mounted system refused to "mount". I got distracted into FUSE then remembered to install the matching kernel-module-ntfs below. Now I am again successfully using 'smbmount' to mount ntfs file types. I am running Fedora 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4 with kernel-module-ntfs-2.6.17-1.2142_FC4-2.1.27-0.rr.10.4.i686.rpm What good is FUSE to me? Laptop recommendations anyone?

I forgot to bring this up at the cookout last night... I have decided to purchase a new laptop (a first for me - always used older equipment) and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a model that plays well with Linux. I'm not interested in a laptop with the latest whiz-bang features, just the basics of wireless networking, ability to play/burn CDs/DVDs, enough horsepower & disk to run forecasting models, GIS, database, etc., and a battery that will last for several hours. (My guess is any laptop these days would be sufficient.) I want to avoid having to add drivers or other support for some whiz-bang hardware when something "vanilla" would work just as well for me, and I would prefer a distro that supports the various standard laptop features (e.g., power management) and typical peripherals like DVDs/movies, Burning CDs, etc., "out of the box". Again, this is probably a non-issue, but there could be a laptop using hardware known to be problematic (remember "winmodems"?)... I use several apps that only run on windows (probably forever), so another first for me will be dual-boot. I have done this before on others' systems, but I mention this just in case there is a awareness of issues with certain laptop models. Anyway, thanks in advance for your help! Steve

Weird fs problem...

Hey Gang, I've got a really weird filesystem problem... I've got a 250GB external USB disk device. It's formatted at ext3. a 'df -h' yeilds the following: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 233G 115G 107G 52% /mnt/ext-usb The weird problem that I'm seeing is that I can't write data to it anymore. i.e. [root@fandango ext-usb]# pwd /mnt/ext-usb [root@fandango ext-usb]# touch test touch: cannot touch `test': No space left on device [root@fandango ext-usb]# And yes, before you ask, I've unmounted the volume and I'm currently running a fsck on it. kickstart pxelinux foo needed

Guys, My google-foo is down today and I've got a quick question that maybe people can help me on. I've got some Rackable boxes I need to kickstart with RedHat 7.3, ideally via PXELINUX. All this actually works right now, but I need to force the system to load the e1000 module and bind it to eth0, instead of the eepro100 module which currently gets in there first. I guess I could just nuke the module from the initrd.img file, but I figured there's got to be a way I can specify this inside the pxelinux config file. I've got the following: default rh73 label rh73 kernel vmlinuz-7.3 append ks=nfs:10.10.1.1:/export/RH7.3/ks.cfg initrd=/RH7.3/initrd.img root=/dev/hda2 ro vga=ask I know I just need to put something into the 'append ...' line, but dammned if I can figure it out. Hi everyone, About a year ago I asked for help from this group on getting linux to work with the internet, preferably though my home wi-fi network, which works OK with Windows. Until then, I had played with linux for a long time but had never been able to make it a part of my life due to the deal-breaker factor of no internet. Someone suggested using the latest distros, such as Fedora Core (3 at the time), which would be most likely to have the appropriate drivers. (Incidentally, frozentech.com sells linux cd's/dvd's at $1/$2 with max $0.49 shipping.) I tried many distros, and two or three different USB wirless adapters, but no luck. Another person suggested trying a wired network first, as wired networks were easier to make work. Until now, I haadn't tried that suggestion, since I thought that it would still involve a lot of time in configuration and trial and error. Lo and behold, last night I hooked up a patch cable to my wife's router, booted up Damn Small Linux on an old PC, and it just plain worked ! Having tried off and on for many years to make linux _useful_ to me (not just a novelty), I was really excited. Unfortunately, a lot of work lies ahead of me before I can really convert to linux: for example, I tried to listen to my favorite radio station 2gb.com, and successfully downloaded real player for linux, but got stuck installing it... It works fine for websites that are written in a certain way (mobile.palm.com, for example). Our WLUG website comes up with the WLUG graphical header but no useful text info. kernel driver vs module

I am still having a hard time understanding kernel drivers vs module's in practical use: I understand a kernel driver, is a driver that Linus, et al, have coded into the kernel, so if i have a peice of hardware, and I compile a kernel with that device's driver turned on, then my device will work. If i build that kernel driver as a module, the driver remains outside the kernel, but still availible for use. As a module I can rmmod or insmod when i need to use the device. My foggy'ness comes from a few things. 1. if the driver is built into the kernel, will it show up in lsmod? 2. if the driver does not show up in lsmod, how do i know if its loaded? 3. weather it's a built in driver or a module, how do i associate the driver (or module) with a particular device? 4. if the device does not have a driver in the kernel, I cannot build a custom kernel to include it, nor can I build it as a module from the kernel source. So: 5. if I get the driver from the vendor, it will build a module for me, based on my kernel-source or kernel-headers??? Then what? again, see #3: how do i associate the module with my device? This is a general linux quandry, but this time i have a debian stable install and have inserted a QLogic HBA. lsmod does show qla2xxx, but it doesn't seem to be functioning as it isn't logging into the fiber switch. thanks mike

CD drawer remains open

Hi All, I have a system where the cd drive insists on keeping the drawer open. I will close the drawer manually by pushing the button that closes it. Within seconds the door will open again. What would cause this? Thanks

looking for an old amd cpu

greetings! I burnt out an amd CPU (my own fault of course...we all know how wonderful AMD chips are!)and am looking for a cheap replacement. I had a few ideas kicking in the back of my head for a meeting topic. By no means am I volunteering to give a talk on this, however I thought it would be a good idea to toss out. </end-disclaimer> How about a talk on port forwarding? The talk could include tunneling via program (like the old school datapipe proggy) and more appropriately the finner points of SSH port forwarding. The tutor is for my son. I have managed to keep our two computers up to date -- am now running Ubuntu 6.04. I want to teach more to my son, but am getting beyond my abilities. I have some administrative work ... I need to share resources, find some drivers ... then move onto setting up an email server. To follow up on discussion about USB capabilities, I took a quick look at which platforms support USB host (so you can plug webcams, etc. *into* it), $ cd linux-2.6.16 $ find . | grep ohci ... ./drivers/usb/host/ohci-s3c2410.c [ Samsung ARM 920T ] ./drivers/usb/host/ohci-sa1111.c [ StrongARM(SA1110) companion Chip ] ./drivers/usb/host/ohci-lh7a404.c [ Sharp ARM920T ] ./drivers/usb/host/ohci-ppc-soc.c [ Various PowerPC (Freescale) ] ./drivers/usb/host/ohci-au1xxx.c [ AMD (formerly Alchemy) MIPS Au1000 ] ./drivers/usb/host/ohci-pxa27x.c [ XScale ARM (successor to SA1110] ... Those modules are thin hardware-specific glue around the main ohci/usb kernel code. I think the gumstix is a pxa25x, and only the 27x supports USB host. Development boards for a lot of these are priced rather high for the typical hobbyist budget, from a few hundred $$ on up, http://www.embeddedplanet.com/products/sbc.asp http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T062/0378.pdf http://www.hitechglobal.com/boards/ARM920T.htm It looks like Gumstix and routerboard are the cheapest available products in this class. Problem with usermod

Hi All, I'm running ubuntu (brezzy), and I just shot myself in the foot.... I went to add my username to a new group, but forgot to include the other groups that I belong to in the command. The command I used was 'sudo usermod -G <new-group> <my-username>'. Now I only belong to <new-group>. That removed my username from the other groups I belonged to, including the admin group. Is there a way undo what I did? I do have a copy of /etc/group before the change. Thanks, -Chuck

Booting Mepis from USB cd rom

Just acquired a new laptop that doesn't have an internal cd rom drive, just a "d-bay" usb cd drive. I had been using Mepis on my previous laptop, and I enjoyed it. But the Mepis Live CD chokes when I try to boot from it. The cd does boot in other pcs, so the media is good. I checked my bios boot settings, but I can boot Knoppix and Ubuntu live cds. I figure that to get other Mepis booted there must be a cheat code I can pass, but my little bit of googling didn't help. Couldn't find anything on the Mepis forums either. Could anyone explain what's going on, or point me somewhere for more knowledge on it. I'd like to understand more how a live cd boots and what the difference between a usb cd and an internal cd rom drive are.

odbc help

Has anyone ever gotten a linux box to speak to a MS SQL server? I am only assuming i need to configure an odbc DSN from linux to MSSQL, but am not successful yet. The end goal is to get phpBB2 to talk to my existing MSSQL database. In order for that to happen, apache has to use php and php has to use an odbc connection to MS SQL. Well, php in apache is working now, and php is set to use MS SQL. isql -s SERVER NAME PWD connects me to my MS SQL database just fine, but iodbctest is failing. I don't know enough to know what is wrong. Any help would be greatly apreciated! mike

hald in ubuntu 'dapper'

Hi All I upgraded by laptop from 'breezy' to 'dapper'. It looks like the hald does not accept the --retain-privileges argument, even though the upgrade tool added it to the /etc/default/hal file. Now the hald won't start. Also, my USB thumb drives won't automount. I'm thinking it may be related to the hald problem. If I run 'sudo hald --retain-privileges restart', the command fails with the help screen for the command. Has anyone else out there seen this problem? Anyone got a fix? I can always comment out the 'DAEMON-OPT=--retain-privileges' line in the /etc/default/hal file, so the hald starts without error, but the USB drives still don't automount. Thanks, -Chuck

Since it sounds like noone else has responded to your question, I'll give it a shot; even though I don't use Evolution. If Evolution stores emails in clear text, and I bet it does then this might work. You could use grep to try and locate one of your past emails some thing like: grep -rlF TEXT ~/* (From the command prompt.) Replace TEXT with an unusual sentance in one of the emails in your folders. This should give you a sense of where the file is located. Once you figure out where the folders are you should be able to simply copy them to your server. I've done this with Thunderbird (from a win machine to a Linux box no less) and it worked well. Backing Up/Moving Evolution

Hi Everyone, Is there a utility to back up Evolution? Or how can I move my Evolution folders listed under "On This Computer" from my hard drive to the server upstairs? I save a lot of my email. I need to find a way to move this stuff so I can get a new dual-boot system (windows/linux). I can't even figure out which directory all this Evolution stuff lives in. Are VFolders or IFolders the answer? I haven't tried either of those, but I believe we have those abilities here on our network. Bandwidth sharing problem

I have a friend with a bandwidth sharing problem. There are two linux boxes (one Debian Sarge, one SuSE 9.3) attached to an old Linksys 10/100 wired router on cable internet (3Mbps confirmed download speed). When the Debian box is downloading a large file, it hogs all the bandwidth, and the SuSE box is very slow on the internet. Is there an easy way to limit download speed on one or both boxes to make them share nicely? I looked through the manual for the router, and I don't see a way to do it there. If there's not an easy way to do it, I'd still like to hear the difficult way to do it. Thanks, Greg

Here is his ad: Gateway Destination 27" Monitor - I'm selling a black Gateway Destination 27" monitor. Some of you may have seen the ads Dell has now for the XPS plasma screens, this is a similar concept that Gateway had years ago. This monitor retailed for $400. This monitor's maximum resolution is 800X600 at 65 hertz. It has a VGA cable input and RCA audio inputs for the mounted speakers on the sides. There are two modes, "PC" and "TV" that allow you to adjust the color settings seperately when you're watching television as opposed to using it with your PC. This monitor worked perfectly for me as my television. I used a computer as the center of my multimedia system with a TV tuner card and I was not disappointed with the monitor at all. The monitor takes a standard PC power cord, and I will include one with the monitor. I can also include a 30 foot VGA cable $25 more. If you are running this monitor from a computer with a DVD player, you will be astonished at the quality difference because this monitor operates at 800X600 resolution instead of a standard TV resolution of 484X280. That's about *twice* the clarity! The cheapest 27" TV at Best Buy is $197. This is twice the TV for less than twice the price! Price: $225 - negotiable

Mail servers, Comcast, and spam

This started happening about a month ago. My ISP is Comcast. This description was sent to me by a town employee: o In an attempt to limit the amount of SPAM on the Comcast Internet system, Comcast does not allow external email servers to send mail to Comcast email accounts where the sending email server's MX records do not match. o Because the TOWN mail server is behind our firewall our incoming mail IP address is different from our sending mail IP address. In other words our MX records do not match consequently Comcast blocks our mail from being sent to Comcast email addresses. Basic questions: - - What is an MX record? - - Is it normal for the mail server to be behind the firewall? I thought perhaps it would be either exposed to the net or on the DMZ. I am wondering if there is some misconfiguration or perhaps a different configuration that could be used to alleviate this problem. I have no expertise running a mail server and thought somebody on this list might be able to help. Thanks! linux courses

I have taken RH and other week long certification programs and am certified in many things. however, the classes themselves are pretty weak, usually only covering RH and only what's in the RH book, superficially at best. I have read tons of materials on linux and continually do so all the time. But does anyone know of a good linux course out there anywhere, outside of the training mills like New Horizons, or even RH? College level course's seem to be the best choice so far, but I have not found one yet, nor do I want to spend the time if it is not a mature syllabus. I have been "on" linux for 3 years now, and I am beyond the basic's but not quite into kernel development yet, so a somewhere in between class is what I am hoping for. Thanks in advance, Mike

How fast is your CD burner with Linux ?

I've noticed that my CD burner (according to K3B) averages about 24X, even though it is advertised as a 48X CD burner. Is this to be expected, or do I have a cheap(er) drive that can't sustain the data rate? It is an IDE/ATAPI drive (NEC3550). It takes approx. 4 minutes for me to burn a 700MB CD (including some fiddling and diddling about calibrating power, fixating, etc). I use Memorex CD-R media (52X, 700MB, 80 min). I'm curious about your CD buring experiences, especially if they are faster than mine. I'd like to know what drive you have, the media you use, and most importantly, how did you determine your drive speed? I've never been to a WLUG meeting before. It's okay for a member of the general public to just show up, right? On a different note, I was trying to set up the Cyrus mail server under Suse 9.2 and have been having a hell of a time with it. I set it aside about 2 weeks ago and haven't gotten back to it. If I bring the PC with me, would anyone be able and willing to help me configure Cyrus properly (or maybe the problem's with PAM - I don't know)? Recycling centers

Anyone have a good suggestion for a place to recycle junk computers cheaply. I've got a pile of dead equipment starting to fill my garage and now that it's spring, it's time to get rid of it all. Most of it actually works, it's just all P133 or PIIs and they're not worth the effort to keep running any more. Plus I've got some work stuff to get rid of too, monitors and such. John

FreeBSD snd_emu10k1 issues

Hey, I currently have FreeBSD 6.1 installed. I have a sound blaster audiology 2 and in order to use it on previous linux and freebsd installs I needed to load snd_emu10k1 into the kernel. When i run "kldload snd_emu10k1" as root, the computer completely freezes up. Gnome doesn't respond, no keyboard responce (Alt+Backspace or Ctrl+alt+F1) and everything seams to lockup. Any suggestions on how to fix this? problems with smb export on external usb drive

I had a drive with an ext3 filesystem in an old p2 running RH8 storing my mp3 files. I moved the drive into a USB enclosure attached to a laptop running FC4. The laptop mounted the fs on /media/media pretty much automatically. The problem is I can't export the /media/media FS with samba to mount on a windows host. I can export /media, and the xp box can see /media/cdrecorder, but /media/media is invisible. Adding repositories?

I've added a new repository (or two) to my yum config, and I'm feeling a bit exposed. I wonder what other WLUG members do about additional repositories. In an effort to support vlc, I had added the livna repository, and when that stopped working (after recent fedora updates), I found that switching from livna to dries helped. Now I notice that there are quite a few packages from dries that will update fedora packages. So, I'm feeling a bit worried. Does anyone have a sense of how much these repositories should be trusted? Bluetooth hardware recomendations

I need a blue tooth interface for my PC, and wondering if anyone has any brands, or hardware chip sets to recommend. I will probably buy a USB or PCMCIA interface. Buying something USB though would allow me to use it in both my desktop and laptop, where only my laptop has PCMCIA. Bluetooth devices i want to hook too, claims it is something like rs-232 serial output over bluetooth, but i gota figure that out. Help with Fedora Core3 -> Core4

Yesterday I transitioned from Core3 to Core4. My sound disappeared. Core4 is shipped without the kernel source code. I have a special sound driver for my Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live EMU10k1X card. The driver is Open Sound System from <http://www.opensound.com/>. It needs to be compiled with the kernel. Got it! Remember Open Sound System stopped working when I went from Core3 to Core4? Now it works. I had also upgraded the kernel. This was a problem because OSS needs to compile with the kernel. I missed some of the modules needed for a successful compilation. The system would not work with ALSA. I think my sound card is unique for some reason. ALSA needed to be disabled before OSS would work. OSS help desk Dev Mazumdar was very helpful. Thanks, you all, for being there. Ken Jones

Perl puzzle

Hi. I've been spending far too much time trying to accomplish a (seemingly) simple thing: use a Perl substitution operation to replace, a comma followed by a space followed by a single double-quote with a single double-quote. The obvious s/, "/"/g doesn't work, nor does escaping the double-quotes, as in s/, \"/\"/g I must have tried dozens of variations. RE's can be tough at times. Late last night I had to admit defeat. Progress and success

Greetings all, I thought I'd write and update you on my newbie experience with Linux et. al. To refresh your memory, my old laptop died just as I had been given a new Linux box and just before the Spring semester had started. I really was feeling stressed. But here are some high points of the past month: * Novell distro installed (and reinstalled (twice!) after a glitch) and updated without a hitch. * Evolution is now my email client of choice for two reasons: I couldn't figure out how to install Thunderbird and I wanted to sync my Palm to something. * I'm successfully popping all my Gmail and myrealbox accounts (13 total). I've never seen my filters run so fast (for junk and legit mail). * Palm Zire 21 now works beautifully with Evolution. I keep it simple and don't need more than the personal calendar. * Open Office installed and updated. I'm using 2.0.1.3 and have begun using Impress to create a presentation for school. * I have taken advantage of the desktop functions, using five work spaces and putting buttons on the tool bars. I love how smoothly my desktop works and allows me new workspaces. * Novell client for Linux working beautifully to connect me to the server upstairs (thanks Bob!) * I've been playing around with the GIMP image editor and in my opinion it is as robust as Photoshop (which I know very well). * I have successfully completed all the Novell Linux Desktop 9 Learning Center modules. The training was good and I would recommend it for new users. * I am successfully running Music Player and copying my CDs to the network. I can now burn a CD/DVD. Here are my observations/complaints: * While I've used both YaST and Red Carpet to install programs, I'd like to see something developed to click and run installation programs, much like the .exe files most are used to. Coming from that environment into a Linux environment, this is critical. If you want to make Linux more attractive for desktop users, software installation has to be easier. The average office user *ME* does not know how to work with code and such to install programs. * I'm still trying to find video capture and editing software. Any recommendations? * Now I also need software to create a business plan. Any recommendations? * I would love to listen to radio station web streams. I live in the boonies and get no radio reception. I do have RealPlayer on this but so far it hasn't worked for grabbing a radio web stream. I miss my Boston radio stations. Well, that's all I can think of for now. Oh, I did meet a wonderful teenager from Worcester who is very knowledgeable about Linux. His name is Stephen and I just wanted to send a shout out to him. I urged him to joint WLUG--he's a gem. Finally, I appreciate everyone here for all the marvelous advice, encouragement and patience. I consider it an honor to be part of your group. Specify which nic gets named eth0

I have a RHAS4 2.6 kernel install with 6 NIC's. How do i tell it which nic I want to be labeled eth0? specifically, i have 2 nics built into the mobo, and 2 dual port addon cards. I want eth0 to be nic1 on the mobo, and eth1 to be nic2 on the mobo. By default it is assigning those nics to eth4 and eth5. thanks in advance... mike

MySQL replication question

Does anyone have experience with MySQL's replication capabilities? I'm running versions 4.1.8 and 4.1.14 servers on linux and windows, and I have a very remote site where I'd like to support replication. The data changes very slowly, but the link has 300 ms (ping) latency and has a small (but noticeable) amount of down time. Does it work well enough to be considered reliable for critical applications? TIA, Bill

Rescuing Data From a Hard Drive

Hi All, I've got a bit of a problem... we have a linux server that contained 2 hard drives. The one with the boot information died - LUCKILY the data we NEED was on the hard drive that lived. My question is... how can I recover the data I need? I've been able to boot to the shell using the install disk and can see the data I need but that shell doesn't provide access to the network card so I can copy the data off. I tried a fresh install on a new HD but when I attatch the 2nd HD (with the data I need) I can't see it. Forgive me, I come from the windows world where just plugging in the old HD would allow me to pull the data off. Any ideas/help/etc is greatly appreciated! Michael Z

When you put the 2nd HDD in the system that you built, did you 'mount' the old drive. The system will not automatically mount the old drive when you install it. Putting it into a working system to access the data is the best way. Am I wrong, or is the gentoo install insanely comlicated? Although I did not sit in front of it from start to finish, it seems like an install takes hours and hours of work... I followed the Handbook (some 80 pages of documentation), which i'm sure is very accurate and each step worked as advertised, but in the end it was too much. After an install of debian, which takes me less than 20 minutes, this was too much for my poor little brain to take, and I eventually gave up. In addition to that, I can't for the life of me, get slackware to consistantly install lilo correctly during the install. Any comments on either of these would be apreciated, however, I am just writing this to toss my vote in for a linux install fest as a meeting topic. I have no problem bringing in a laptop to show the simple, eligant, streamlined, 20 minute debian install, but I would like to also see someone go through a gentoo install, and assist on a slackware lilo config...all of which can be done via my laptop if needed. SSH Tunneling?

Hi all, I'm in the process of moving a web site, msql db, and some game daemons to a new server. While the DNS transfer is in process we want all traffic to go to the new server. I've been told this can be done vial ssh tunnels but don't have any experience.... can anyone point me in the right direction? Do I need to set up a tunnel for every port on the old server (the games open ports)? How is it set up to run all the time? Do I need to mess with sshd_config? Any and all help is appreciated! Thanx! Rough upgrade to FC4

I just upgraded to FC4 from FC3 and I had some troubles that should not have happened. My FC3 system was current with updates, and I used downloaded ISO's from fedora. The problem was that many of the FC3 packages were more up to date than the FC4 packages, so the upgrade did not install them. This included the kernel. I felt lucky that I had a workable system. Running up2date did not help -- I was still in an FC3 system (kind of). I manually installed the FC4 kernel and ran up2date again, but it was stuck on many packages, because up2date only wanted to freshen existing rpm's -- it didn't want to add any new ones to solve dependencies. After much arm-wrestling (floundering?), I gave up on the GUI up2date and ran with the command line, feeding it chunks of rpms that needed updating. I feel lucky that I didn't brick my system. What did I do wrong? This must be a common occurance. I have another system that I need to upgrade, but I don't want it to go like this. What's a better way? Thanks, Bill

I had partitions setup the following way /boot / swap /home /usr/local/ This way I can keep the users data and just install a new system over it. I think that Debian's method of package management is the best of any of the Linux Distro's. Perl Unicode question

Folks, I'm trying to understand how Unicode works in Perl 5.8.7, and things are not working the way they're described in perluniintro. In particular, I have a file encoded in UTF-8 from Perl, that I want to convert to Windows Unicode (UCS-16LE). The intro provides this snippet for converting from one character set to another: open(my $nihongo, '<:encoding(iso2022-jp)', 'text.jis'); open(my $unicode, '>:utf8', 'text.utf8'); while (<$nihongo>) { print $unicode } When I try that, substituting UTF-8 and ':encoding(UTF-16LE)', I get no warnings, but the output has twice as many characters as it should have and they are all NULLs. I can supply a my UTF-8 file if anyone wants to have a try. In particular, I think the fact that I have embedded apostrophes (0x27) encoded as RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK (0x2019) may be part of the problem. Thanks, Skip

Trial By Fire

Greetings All! You may recall a while back I was asking questions about Linux laptops and video capture and editing software for Linux As luck would have it, I was given a shiny new (well, slightly used) Linux desktop compuer. It is running the Novell distro (see I'm learning!!) and I'm loving it. As fate would have it, my laptop died two days ago and this Linux system is all I have left. I no longer have the luxury of time to fiddle and learn. I am working my way through that Novell Linux Desktop free online training, but for some reason that's not allowing me to log in. That's not my question though. No matter how hard I try, I can't install software. I have read the manual and I know how to log in to the root system and activate YaST. I was trying to install Thunderbird 1.5. But I'm enjoying using Evolution, so perhaps I'll forgo Thunderbird for now. I just could not get YaST to recognize or "see" the Thunderbird package. I even figured out "change source of installation", all to no avail. Do downloadable software packages for Linux come with intallers? Can anyone help with advice for YaSt? Is my issue with the Thunderbird 1.5 package perhaps? Quite frankly if it's this hard (frustrating!) to install software, I'm not gonna be a happy gal. I still have other things I want to add to this snappy little computer (i.e. my Palm) but darn there's gotta be an easier way. Spring semester starts 26 January and I need this up and running.
