Printing Photos - cropping in gimp 2.0

Hi All, Thanks for the input I recieved here, I've bought an Epson R300 color printer for making photos. Once I figured out that the debian package for libcupsys has the permissions borked for the files in /usr/lib/cups/backend so that they aren't executable, all is well. I've been happily browsing images in 'gqview', then loading them into gimp 2.0, then printing them. But I'm having issues with scaling images. I have to guess how/where to crop the images so that I can get the maximum amount of the picture onto the paper. It's a real pain, with lots of back and forth. Is there a tool out there, or a gimp plugin, which allows me to take a picture, select a paper size and gives me a template to crop/scale the image to fit that paper size nicely? Any hints on what tools/packages I should be looking at for this type of work? For example, I've got a picture of my nephew and son which I wanted to print out. I also wanted to zoom in a bit (or crop the image down to get closer to them) so that when it printed, I maximized the use of the 4x6 stock. A real pain in gimp 2.0, but since I'm just using the standard Debian install, maybe there is a plugin to help with this? Thanks, John

cheap Compaq at Staples

Staples has a low-priced machine advertised in the Globe: $199.94 for a Compaq Presario with an AMD Sempron processor. Any idea how this might work with Linux? I picked up a cheap Compaq at Walmart a year ago, and I returned it because it was such a dog. TIA, Bill

lock down /etc

Not sure if anyone has experience with this, but I would like to lock down the /etc directory so common users cannot run through the directory and read all the files. However, programs still need to be able to read the files to work. I'm trying to do this because we have several users on our system that like to peruse the files within /etc. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help, Justin

It notices the drive quite nicely and tries to make it available as "hde" (as seen in dmesg). However, once KNOPPIX comes up, I cannot successfully do anything with the drive. I'll burn a KNOPPIX V3.next CD and try this to see if the result changes (since that CD will probably have a more recent kernel). This gives me some hope that this device *might* work with Linux. FYI: When buying HW to build this system, I ordered the Plextor 712 ATAPI version, figuring I'd have trouble like this with SATA. The vendor shipped me the SATA drive at the cheaper ATAPI price...go figure. Fedora has pretty much abandoned ide-scsi and has switched instead to the SG_IO API directly on the underlying ATAPI device. This allows applications to send SCSI Generic commands by using the ATAPI device instead of the SG device which required the ide-scsi hack for ATAPI devices. I know this change broke a lot of things, mainly people's expectations on which device to use with cdrecord et al. It is now as simple as: cdrecord dev=/dev/hdc or similar.

Proliant 1600 for sale

I go back and forth on this, but I have a Compaq Proliant 1600, dual 450 (or 500, i forget), with 6 18gig drives, plus an F1 full of 18gig drives, plus some spares. I can also put in a DLT drive. It runs fine, but is loud. I go back and forth with wanting to sell it 'cause I didn't think anyone would be interested. But is anyone? $600 for the whole shabang. yum repository for Aurora?

Would anyone here HAPPEN to know of any yum repositories for Aurora Linux (Sparc flavor, 1.0 is based on RH 7.3, 1.9x is based on Fedora)? I've been looking for a repository for upgrading my 1.0 installation to the latest 1.91/1.92, but I cannot find an up-to-date repository. 8( (For anyone that's curious, I'm running Aurora on my Sparc Ultra60...)
