I mentioned a couple podcasts last night. First was the Amp Hour podcast, specifically an episode where they interviewed someone who reverse engineers ICs for the automotive industry: https://theamphour.com/397-8-an-interview-with-chris-gerlinsky/ The second was Stay Tuned With Preet. Preet Bharara doesn't avoid politics, but that's not what the podcast is about. He interviews other lawyers so you can hear what a courtroom is like from the perspective of a prosecutor or a defense attorney or a defendant, and he asks them about their more memorable cases. https://www.wnycstudios.org/shows/preetbharara

UPS power backup unit needs home
by E Johnson July 13, 2018

July 13, 2018

I have a UPS power backup unit here that I can't use. This is a Cyber Power model 1000PFCLCD. This should supply around 15 minutes of power to your computer & peripherals in the event of a power outage. Enough time to shutdown your delicate operations properly, save the doc you were just working on, or put your game on pause... Purchased several years ago (for around $109), I never used it in the old place because NONE of the circuits were grounded --so it wouldn't ever do anything. Now in the new place, nothing is grounded here either! Probably it works but I was never able to test it, since it requires a grounded circuit even to charge itself. It has not been abused except by a little dust. This is about the size of eight bricks all stacked together into a box shape... Probably heavier than eight bricks. Unscented; smoke- & cat-free. Will go with your other shiny black computer decor. Someone needs this! I want you to want this! Offering it here first, FREE to good home. I am still in Worcester, now on the quieter end of Vernon St. Pickup time flexible, and we have an off-street spot where you can temporarily park. Who wants this? Let me know. Liz J

Reminder! Meeting July 12th 2017 Topic: Open Forum / BBQ / guix
by Tim Keller July 11, 2018

July 11, 2018

Hey Gang, Our next meeting is July 12th, 2018. Currently there isn't a topic, so I think I'm going to call this an open forum meeting. There was some talk about guix, so we'll definitely be talking about that. We'll also talk about when we want the BBQ. Personally, my vote is for Sept. Less bugs, cooler weather, etc. Obviously if someone with a pool wants to pitch for August I can be persuaded! Location: WPI Campus Center Rm 301 (Hagglund room) When you come up the stairs go right instead of left. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Afterwards we'll head off for dinner and keep up the conversation. Later, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Re: [Wlug] BBQ Question

You're thinking of last years BBQ! My plan was to have the BBQ either August or Sept. Being anywhere near a grill when it's 100 degrees just isn't enjoyable. This release brings us close to our goals for 1.0, so it’s probably one of the last zero-dot-something releases. • About GNU Guix is a transactional package manager for the GNU system. The Guix System Distribution, GuixSD, is an advanced distribution of the GNU system. In addition to standard package management features, Guix supports transactional upgrades and roll-backs, unprivileged package management, and per-user profiles. GuixSD offers a declarative approach to operating system configuration management and is highly hackable. Guix uses low-level mechanisms from the Nix package manager, except that packages are defined as native Guile modules, using extensions to the Scheme language. GuixSD uses the Linux-Libre kernel and the GNU Shepherd init system. It can be used on an i686, x86_64, armv7, or aarch64 machine. It is also possible to use Guix on top of an already installed GNU/Linux system, including on armv7, aarch64, and mips64el. https://www.gnu.org/software/guix/

Has anyone messed with Peertube? https://joinpeertube.org/en/home/ I don't remember if it's strictly Linux-related, but I heard about it on a Linux podcast and it sounds interesting.
