Dual PIII 1ghz Case + power 512mb ram 2 Hard Drives - 16gig + 8gig (or about that size) Sony IDE CDRW (fast, I think 48x,24x,16x) Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI Ethernet card $400 There will be 2 big gaping holes in the front if I can't find the 5 1/4 drive bay covers. No video card. Also, nVidia geForce 3 and above cards don't work with this motherboard. nVidia blames it on Tyan, and Tyan blames it on nVidia. My Radeon 7550 works just fine (but you don't get that). If you want, I have an old voodoo3 card which was in this at one point, it worked then, you can have it for free with the computer. Under Windows, I was never able to get USB working well (keyboard was fine, camera + mouse weren't). Under linux, usb worked 100%, so I'm assuming it's just my luck with windows and not the hardware. I will be wiping the drives clean before selling it, so you're on your own for an OS. I think one of the drives may be mounted "creatively" so be forewarned. If anyone wants it, hopefully we can arrange a drop-off & pickup, perhaps at a wlug meeting to avoid any shipping. Please send replies to me, and not the list. -Marc

HI Everybody, This is a reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held on Thursday, May 15th, 2003 at 7:00 PM in Olin Hall 107 (note new location!) on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA. At this meeting, our guest speaker will be Vince McHugh. Vince will talk to WLUG about the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS). The second part of Vince's talk will be about imaging and scanning. In this context, Vince will talk about how his company, NECS, is making Canon scanning products work in the Linux environment. Vince is a member of GNHLUG and is also a Systems Support Manager for NECS/Canon (the largest independent Canon dealer in New England). Vince has been involved with Linux for the last 4-5 years, and also possesses a Novell CNE and a Windows MCP. Light refreshments will be served at the meeting. Some of this may also be related to the OS scheduler and VM configuration of the kernel - both of which have been improved in the new 2.5/2.6 kernel. The new shceduler is preemptive and does a better job of giving interactive processes a higher priority which makes the box "feel" faster. Redhat GUI performance

I have a general question about Linux performance... I am running Redhat 8.0 on a Dell 400MHz, 128MB system (OptiPlex) with an 8MB ATI Rage Pro Video card. I have a fairly basic workstation installation, with SSHd, ftpd, telnetd, apached, and a couple other services running. Gnome seems to take forever to open windows/applications. It can be on the order of 10 seconds to a minute for some applications to come up. (Mozilla is one of the worst, even to just bring up a local file as the home page for the browser) Is Gnome just a very slow GUI, or is there something that I can do to speed up my system?? I know of several (5-6) people who have installed RedHat 7.2...8.0 on Dell and Sony systems (all CPU are 866MHz+) with Gnome or KDE and the performance has been very slow in the GUI. Even with a higher end 1.5GHz CPU/512MB RAM system. Is there a Linux distribution that has a standard GUI that is very responsive? Is Redhat just too bulky to run quickly, or do I need to download a better GUI for Redhat? With Windows2000, this system was very responsive, and the other people I know about are running XP, which is so much faster that they run XP most of the time now. Thanks, jeff

Good advice. The X window system amd font server create its unix domain sockets as files under /tmp along with other programs, which will not show up doing "fuser -u /tmp/*". Also do a "netstat -pA" to get a list of all the unix domain sockets and look for files in /tmp. Gregory, You'll want to do a "fuser -u /tmp/*" and see what files are currently in use. If it's currently not in use, it's probably safe to delete. A bit off topic - phpnuke et al.

I'm posing this question becuase I'm betting some on this list have ventured down the path before me... I'm looking to avoid having to keep up on the latest and greatest web development stuff just to have a useful an interesting site. So, I'm looking for something like phpnuke to convert over to. I am aware of phpnuke, and other similar packages out there. I'm planning on downloading nuke to see what it can and can't do... I wouldn't mind having control over things providing I have the time, but am to the point where I do not want ot have to write code every time I get an idea. I already have a job... So, anyone have a favorite tool, collection of tools, etc., that they would recommend for a person site that supports logins, discussion threads, etc.? Steve

CD burning question...

If I burn a CD from an ISO, should I be able to duplicate the MD5SUM: md5sum file.iso md5sum /dev/scd0 Right? (I think I'm getting some errors while burning.) Thanks, Bill
