Hi all I'm trying to use a command (anything but my best guess now is 'find'). I want to list files that end in the number 8-16 if they exist for example finding names 5-9 is easy: $ find /dev/vc -name [5-9] /dev/vc/9 /dev/vc/8 /dev/vc/7 /dev/vc/6 /dev/vc/5 I'm having problems though with numbers higher than 10. $ find /dev/vc -name [5-16] /dev/vc/6 I only get 6 back.. Any ideas? -thanks

Partition Question

Hi all, I have a bunch of linux boxes that have the swap partitions that are not of type swap. They are type linux. The OS seems to be swapping just fine on this partition type. Some machines have swap partition that look like this from fdisk /dev/hda6 50810 52890 1048792+ 82 Linux swap Other machines have swap partitions that look like this. /dev/hda6 50810 52890 1048792+ 83 Linux Does anyone have experience with why it would or wouldn't cause issues? Does anyone know what it means to have a partition of type x or y? Is there a difference or is having a partition type mostly there for humans. I would have thought that the partition just defined the limits. Everything else depends on what you do with the partition as far as formatting and defining inodes/FATs and labels... Any ideas? Using SAMBA as a PDC

Hi all, At work, there are several workstations and servers (about 15) running Win2k, Win2k Server, and WinXP. I also have a server running SuSE 9.1 that has Samba 3.0.4 installed. I'm wondering if anyone out there has used Samba as a Primary Domain Controller in a Windows environment? Can Samba be used as a BDC (Backup Domain Controller)? What are the pit-falls? ... SOHO LAN & Multiuser Desktops

I'm successfully using NIS+NFS for a small SOHO LAN serving 4 desktops, a server and printer, plus associated networking. I'm wondering, though, if there's an easier approach to configuring a "Windows replacement" multi-user setup. I do have printing, file sharing and "roaming profiles" working fine, but it's a bit cumbersome so far. Is anyone working with an approach that might be simpler... particularly one well integrated into an existing desktop distribution? - Bob

gnome-terminal/mutt question & solution

Ok, this is going to read more like a detective novel... :-) I'm using mutt in a gnome-terminal on fedora core 3, and I'm up to date (within a week) with updates. I find that, with the defaults, the terminal does not refresh when it needs to. A ctrl-L repaints the window just fine. I did (just now!) find a fix... Right clicking on the terminal -> Input methods and select "X input method"... Everything works fine, except this setting is not persistent. The setting affects all gnome terminals and new ones opened. However, if I first close all terminals and start a new one, the setting is lost. So, how to make the fix stick? I have no idea, but I did find this info on the subject: http://www.webservertalk.com/archive204-2004-9-379265.html This gives a link to a new terminfo file which you can use to fix the problem, and a nice way to install it without editing the distro-supplied file. Thus far it works fine. Bill

Fedora 1 - Realtek card (swapped out the MN-130) - dualboot with Win ME - and working like a charm:) It's so much faster cleaner and better than the old Windows that I wish I could get rid of Win entirely but I know if I do somebody'll complain so it stays. Now - what're good security measures for a public internet terminal (which is basically what it is)? I already have the firewall set at a high level, but what should I do beyond that? New problem! FC3 install

Jared & everyone - thanks for all your help & advice, I'm going to try Ubuntu I think if I can't get FC 3 to work out. The problem I'm having now is with the FC 3 install. I burned the four cd's and upgraded my old box & everything went fine, a bit slow but fine (install took about an hour). Now I boot up for the first time and as soon as it hits kudzu and checks for newly installed equipment the monitor goes to vertical colored lines. I read that this can be fixed by editing the xorg.conf (or something like that) file & setting everything to defaults & that the issue is basically with the monitor being set at too high a resolution but how do I do that? The biggest thing with Gentoo is that you compile everything - so when a new version of KDE comes out - you compile the whole thing - but you don't actually sit there and run make. The thing that I like the most is that the package management is really good. Everything is designed to pull the source kits (and any patches) directly from the project webpage for a given project. You just tell the install tools that you want to install or upgrade a package and it figures out all of the appropriate dependencies for your system (depending on what you already have installed and some configuration params) then it starts downloading source and building things automagically. Also, since you are building the system up from scratch (there is no gui installer or anything - all command-line) you get to decide exactly what is on your system and exactly how it gets setup. There's about 100 core packages (including kernel source, system logger, cron, etc...) but that doesn't include X or any of those things - which is nice for server installations. I've found that the Fedora installer hides too much for installing servers - for desktops its not really all that clear either. Ubuntu hides everything, but you go into it knowing that and it actually figures out what type of installation its doing (laptop/desktop). I had that on my laptop for a while and it ran really well - there's not much package selection there - its more a pre-canned set of binaries depending on your system type (it even knew to download the gnome battery applet for monitoring my laptop battery). So, now that I've sufficiently confused you... did that help at all? Keep in mind that I wrote this at 2:45A - so it might be a little incoherent and rambling... FW: MN-130?

OK here we go - I'm a Linux newbie &'ve used Mandrake in the past occasionally but that's about it. I've installed Fedora 1 on an old computer at work but it has an MN-130 network card & the system isn't recognizing that it's there. According to a couple articles I've checked I need to edit the Tulip driver (tulip_core.c) & add a line of code at line 201. I did this and then checked the dependencies & typed modules_install & restarted the system & STILL the network card didn't show up. What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any advice to get me out of this frustration? I'm very close to swapping out the card for another one that's more likely to work but I'd like to avoid that if possible ... Hi, First a hearty thank you to all that replied to my conundrum. Here is how I got past the problem of my (FreeBSD 5.3 Release) OpenSSH's "sshd" key errors, not loading at startup: 1) I had an incorrect line in /etc/rc.conf. One problem for me was an incorrect path to the program. The correct lines that mattered were: sshd_program=/usr/sbin/sshd sshd_enable="YES" 2) I also did not have correct keys generated for the sshd aplication. Based upon your helpful e-mails and the man pages I found the following worked just fine to create the SSHV2 dsa host key: ssh-keygen -t dsa -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key 3) Also, based upon recommendations I turned off DNS lookup by my sshd server in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file. UseDNS no All is well here and my adventure helps someone else some day. Correcting these problems got my Putty and WinSCP connections down to around 2-3 seconds (from around 80-90 seconds). A OpenSSH question.

Hi, I am running into a problem trying to setup OpenSSH 3.6.1 on FreeBSD 5.3 release. I am connecting via clients (both ssh on BSD and WinSCP on Windows). I know this is not a FreeBSD group, but I bet someone else has run into this problem on a Unix-like platform. When I test the server with "sshd -ddd", I get an error back from the server which reads: debug3: Not a RSA1 key file /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key I have tried creating the above server key many times with no apparent luck. The clients connect to the server but the connect time is way over 60 seconds so I am bummed out. I have looked on the OpenSSH site and googled for it but have not found a workable solution. Any ideas would be appreciated, Thank you, Joel

Communication between "HiTech" and anyone not in the club.

WLUG members: There is one HiTech issue about which I am passionate and frustrated. It is the lack of understanding in the Fitchburg Public School District of the management efficiencies that are now "best practices"in the commercial world. I am sure that the Fitchburg case is typical of most Massachusetts public school districts. Our School Committee beats up on the Superintendent over the cost of multiple Administrators. No one sees that this cost could be contained if improvements were to be made in the architecture of their internal network, the structures of their data bases and the training of their administrators. Part of the problem is that the voting public does not understand either. This is perfect opportunity for the commercial LINUX community to garner some very good press. If Red Hat, for example, were to team with the Fitchburg Public School District to implement places where LINUX is a better answer than M$, it could get general media coverage as well as Education publication notice. My observation is that little trust worthy technical information passes between HiTech and those who manage our public schools. I would like to work at bridging that communication gap. Cups help

This is a question for those cups guru's out there. I'm trying to write a custom perl script for cups that does accounting. I have a database with users and quotas and I'm writing a filter for cups that checks to make sure the user has enough left on their balance before printing. I was curious how I would go about sticking this into the cups filtering chain. I've been reading up on the cups docs but I'm still kinda confused on where to put it. Since there seems to be a decent bit of interest in this script, I'll post when my release version 0.2 today. For anyone who is interested check out http://gforge.maxslack.com/projects/cupsacct/. It's my personal project site and I have put up the first release. I'll be releasing the files here so it's the best way to get them. Not all the components of the project site are working yet (mostly web based CVS) but you can download the release tarball if you are interested. Also note that this script is still heavily modified for specific use in the ECE databases. I'm working on changing it so that it will be more universal and include sql to create the database and tables.
