Hi, I am building web/database server and am looking for some installation advice. The system will have an IDE boot drive for the OS and a raid for the data files. Is there an advantage to partitioning the raid drive so that the web content is on one partition and the database files are on another or am I better off keeping it as a single partition. System Specs: Dual Opteron 248 2.2 GHz LSI Logic MegaRAID SCSI 320-1 Controller Seagate Cheetah 10K.7 - 73 GB - Ultra320 SCSI Seagate 80 GB IDE drive Suse 9.3 Thanks in advance, Mike

getting a little burnt by the Sun

Hi again... I screwed up my XF86Config file and now X "starts" but the keyboard mouse is all screwed up. Since xf86config does not list Sun, what do I put for the keyboard/mouse type? vpn client

Alright, on my quest to retrieve files I left on a server back in Baltimore I have decided to download VPN client for Linux and try that. I have not succeeded. When installing I get "failed to make module cisco_ipsec.ko"...I haven't had loads of time to play but if anyone knows how I can get connected please let me know. Thank you. Jill

We covered some iPod things, and maybe helped someone with a perl script. I showed off my little Dell L700 laptop and enlightenment desktop manager...very lightweight and has nice eye candy, but no icons. Lots of discussions around Intel and AMD as well...hopefully we will see that pdf regarding the lawsuit... FC3 Wireless Question

Ok, this is to all of the Fedora / Red Hat users. I just loaded FC3 on a new machine, and the only way to get network on it is wireless. I'm trying to use a linksys wusb11 (99.9999% positive it uses the prism2 chipset) . No matter what I do, I can't get /proc/net/dev to show a wireless device. I compiled the modules myself, tried hermes modules, even tried ndiswrapper althogh I can't get that to work. any help is appreciated. Eric

Thanks Theo, this is exactly what I was looking for. I actually emailed Thomas Esken (GNU gcal developer), and the best gcal example he could come up was... gcal -f/dev/null -Hno -#0*d1#999 -c-Qxld20- %20070706 But this command works only up until the beginning of any calendar year, i.e. it doesn't easily cross year boundaries like your suggestion does. FYI: I need this sort of command in order to generate charts (using XML:SVG) that display metrics from some DB2 Connect gateways that I admin. The title of one chart might be: Total Daily Connections, last 100 days. If data for any day is missing, I want the chart to reflect that. Currently, the charts I'm creating handle missing days poorly, they simply cover up gaps in the data with the next previous day's metric. Thanks again, Doug p.s. I'm looking for a standard Unix shell command that can list an arbitrary number of day dates backwards from today. For example, something like this: $ unixcommand -7 Tuesday July 5 2005 Monday July 4 2005 Sunday July 3 2005 Saturday July 2 2005 Friday July 1 2005 Thursday June 30 2005 Wednesday June 29 2005 Command must transit months, years, leap-years, etc. Does gcal, or any other Unix command, have this capability? Moving boot drive from hdb to hda

I am in the process of recovering my system from a bad drive and have almost succeeded. My system had 2 drives both were very similar in that they each had a version of linux installed with a swap partition and primary partition. The hda drive died in a way that made the mbr unavailable. I switch the drives making hdb hda. I then booted into a rescue mode (Suse) and modified the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and replaced the references for hdb with hda. It now reads kernel (hd0,1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 vga=0x31a splash=silent desktop resume=/dev/hda1 showopts initrd (hd0,1)/boot/initrd I also modified the /boot/grub/device.map file. Upon rebooting the system it comes up allows me to choose at the grub menu and proceeds to boot. The boot messages are: Checking root file system... fsck 1.34 (25-Jul-2003) Failed to open the device '/dev/hdb2': No such device or address Warning... fsck.reiserfs for device /dev/hdb2 exited with signal 6. < more messages > file system is currently mounted read-only. The correct file system is mounted and I can remount it as read-write. There appears to be another reference to hdb2 somewhere. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks, Mike

ldifde for linux?

Figured I'd throw this out there. I am working on a project that requires me to push .ldf files from a linux server to a window 2003 server. Basically creating the same accounts on the linux system onto the windows system. Does anyone know of linux program that is equivalent of the windows "ldifde" program? HOWTO debug hard lockups

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 HI gang, My dual Opteron machine is not happy. I cannot get more than 7 straight days of uptime without getting a hard lock, requiring a reboot. (My definition of hard lock is: machine responds neither to keyboard input, mouse input, nor network pings). I can stimulate hard locks by running OpenOffice 1.1.3 (I had 3 tonight, and 3-4 on a previous occasion while running OpenOffice). It makes no sense to me that an application run as a normal user could lockup a machine. I've tried setting "nmi_watchdog=1" to see if I could get an "oops" when it hard locks - no dice. Do you know any other tricks I could try to see if it is the kernel which is locking up? I'm running SuSE's version of 2.6.8. It may also be the hardware itself which is locking up. I have suspected that I might have "warm" hardware and have taken steps to better cool the machine. One CPU runs at a high of 63 degrees C, while the other one runs at 58 degrees C both while running Seti@Home (which heats the CPUs a significant 5-10 degrees C versus idle). The cooler CPU has a Zalman 7000 series copper heatsink/fan combo, while the warmer CPU has an undersized block of metal and a small fan (thanks to the MB manufacturer MSI). AMD quotes a max operating temperature of 70 degress C, so although quite hot, I think I'm still within spec, but I'm uncomfortably close. The temperature on the surface of the SCSI hard drive is 95 degrees F. The room temperature is a balmy 85 degrees (hey, its New England in the summer time!). The machine has passed memtest many times. If it is a heat problem, I'm royally screwed when the real summer weather arrives. I want to install a better heat sink on CPU 2 (hence my previous email about a heat sink retaining bracket). Physical tolerances on this MB are really tough to satisfy (MSI K8T Master2 FAR). The heat sink tooling on the MB is for socket 478 even though the MB uses AMD opteron 244s (yes, this is quite bizarre, er, non-standard). If anybody has any ideas which might help, I'm all ears (as it were). Thanks!
