Need help: palm -> laptop

Hi all, I need some help! I bought a USB to Serial/parrallel adaptor (IBM 22P5298). Fedora 4 seems to see it in /proc/bus/usb/devices but when I try to hotsync my palm, no connection results. Anyone have an idea as to how to proceed? Thanks in advance! Thank you all!! re: mozilla-mail Attach File(s) hung up my Fedora 3 machine. The culprit was gamin as Chuck Anderson had suggested. 'yum info' told me that there is a more recent version for Fedora 3. 'yum upgrade' installed that more recent version. The problem seems to have disappeared. Ain't open source grande! I am embarrassed to admit that I do not know how to figure this out. I am having a problem with both mozilla-mail and evolution-mail mozilla-mail and evolution-mail both use the same process to "Attach file(s)". When I try to attach a file my Fedora Core 3 machine is toooo slow. It ties up the machine for minutes at a time. If I try to move the GUI is smears. "top" does not indicate lack of memory or lack of cpu cycles. I have not had any luck googling for others who have seen this before me. Do any of you WLUGers have a suggestion. My Fedora Core 4 works very quickly. Ken Jones

I managed to just set up automounting on my gentoo box, via some udev rules, HAL, D-BUS and a neat little app called ivman. Ivman will detect when new devices are plugged in and create a new entry in fstab if there isn't already an acceptable one (it'll remove the entry when the device is not connected); it can also be set up to do some more interesting things, such as integration to say start up your burning program when a blank CD-R is put in, etc. Using some udev rules (this is a great reference http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html) isn't *that* hard. You can use the program udevinfo to find out information about your plugged in devices to write appropriate rules. For example, I have a rule to link the device to a node /dev/nikon for my nikon camera, whenever it is plugged in. Then, I have an entry in /etc/fstab to mount /dev/nikon at /media/nikon, and lvman takes care of that (detects when that node is linked, reads fstab and mounts appropriately - if I didn't have that entry in fstab it would create one to mount at like /media/usbdevice01 or something). It even (usually) unmounts the device without issue (figuring out why it doesn't always). Since the serial number for each device is specific, my rule just uses that, so it looks like: SYSFS{serial}="SERIAL OF MY NIKON", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="nikon" to link node /dev/nikon to my camera. I had to use mknod to create that node initially (just a simply character device, I believe, can't remember the major/minor numbers off the top of my head). Of course you need to make sure you have hotplug installed and enabled in your kernel, as well as usb_storage and the SCSI modules (needed for the usb-storage module to work, according to kernel documentation). -- Carlton C. Disabling eth0 upon bootup

Hey all- I'm running ubuntu 5.10, and trying to understand how the linux bootup process works.. Right now upon bootup I'd like to change two things: Not ifup eth0 Configure wpa_supplicant to boot up with the right parameters in order to configure itself to the wireless network here. I think I figured out how to get the wpa_supplicant to work-- I just edited /etc/init.d/wpasupplicant and changed $OPTIONS to the arguments I need in order for it to work. For disabling eth0 on bootup, I could modify /etc/init.d/networking and change the command "ifup -a" to "ifup wlan0" to just boot up my wlan0 on bootup, but I feel there might be an easier way to do this... DELL 720 printer shared on SAMBA??

I've unsuccessfully googled this problem. Maybe you folks know a solution. My wife received a freebie DEL 720 printer. It is really a relabeled Lexmark z600 type. By downloading a driver from Lexmark, I got the printer running on my FEDORA 4 machine. I want to share this printer using SAMBA. After installing the same driver on my FEDORA 3 machine its CUPS sees the remote printer and "installs" it. When I ask to print a test page it announces that it had sent the page. Nothing happens on the FEDORA 3 machine to which the printer is attached. It's CUPS says that nothing is in the printer's queue. Any ideas? Ken Jones

If the Unix shell doesn't like it then try something else... hey guys, this would seem rather basic. How to delete a file, but i have a problem. I want to delete a file called "--exclude". Power Supply Needed

Hi all, Anyone have a Ilssan ISF 120SI compatible Power supply they'd be willing to sell me cheap? This is for an eMachines box that died in a lightning storm. It's for a couple with limited means and I just don't have any spares around the house at all. I think there were 7 or 8 of us, with two newcomers (welcome!). The discussion started with GRUB and some of its more interesting features vs. LILO, such as command line editing and adding graphics to the background. I had made a GRUB bootable CD prior to the meeting. GRUB has a large number of features, and we touched on only a few. After that, we somehow ended up on the topic of VNC: http://www.realvnc.com http://www.tightvnc.com <-- There was also interest in the "suspend to disk" feature of my laptop, which actually worked in a live demo. One person asked if it was possible to do this on a desktop machine (I don't think so....). In addition, Mel K. (newcomer) brought his laptop, onto which he wanted to install RedHat 9.0, which was having trouble recognizing his external USB hard drive. I gave Mel my SuSE 9.3 pro CDs and asked him to give that a try. Mel said that he'd keep us apprised of his progress. Pizza / soda followed at the Tech Pizza restaurant where we've gone after the last several meetings. Mel mentioned that he has interest in VistA (open source medical software). SuSE Installation process.

Hello All, Does anyone have in-depth knowledge of the current SuSE install process? I want to get an install to exclude certain GIDs that we use in NIS when the install assigns GIDs to groups owned by packages. I found that I can assign the correct GID to an internal group in the autoyast XML file, but the package that uses that GID still gets a group assigned with that GID. Then result is duplicate GIDs in /etc/group. Ideally I would like to know how to get the installer to ignore certain GIDs. -Adam

Let's see if I can announce the date correctly this month: :-) Wed Oct 5th 2005 7:00 PM The theme of this meeting will be "What is the theme of this meeting?". As of late, that has been a familiar theme. Still, we manage to have fun both during and after the meeting, and that's a good theme (uh, thing)! Without intending to sound like a looping MP3, I'm always looking for someone to lead a talk at the meeting. I don't think I've ever turned anyone down so don't be shy. Having said that, I'm sure someone will come up with some wild idea just to be the first to get turned down. RH8.0 user in Worc. area

Bad x11 package from fedora

I installed a bad package from fedora over the weekend. xorg-x11.i386 6.8.2-1.FC3.45 There are a total of 13 packages that are associated with the upgrade. This also affects FC4. There is a beta fix that I hope to test tonight. DO NOT INSTALL THESE PACKAGES. If you have already installed the bad packages and are experiencing console lock-up, you can fight your way back by booting to single user mode, setting inittab to runlevel 3. USB Flash Drive on RH 9

I'm not really fluent in device stuff, but I just configured a RH9 machine for a project, and was trying to offload some config files to a flash drive. After searching, I added to fstab: /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb_flash vfat noauto,user,rw,umask=0 0 0 and did a mkdir /mnt/usb_flash as root here's the log ... only partially recognized ... did a modprobe usb-storage after the "not claimed by any active driver" message...removed and inserted several times... umount obviously not recognized. failed graphics

Thank god for mutt... My motherboard integrated graphics died this evening. It still works in console mode (have to boot to init 3), but when I try to start graphics, or go to init 5 -- caput. What I see is a most of the firmware boot (e machine logo) with fritzed colors in a band across the top -- about 15% of the screen. I was wondering if I could just add a new card and have that work. To do that, I suppose I'd have to find a way to disable the motherboard graphics card Any ideas? If this seems like a good idea, can you recommend a reasonable graphics card? I'm not a gamer. The most graphics-intensive thing I do is watch a movie. TIA, Bill

wlug members, I work for a health care company in Wellesely Hills that may soon be looking for a temp linux/windows sys admin. I am not sure if this has been officially announced, so I make no promises, nor do I decide who gets hired, so don't look for favor's, nor be mad if this is false hope. I just wanted to extend the information to the team. However, if you are interested, we might by looking for someone with 3+ years linux support (RH) and a 6+ year windows background. we have 380+ Windows/Novell/linux servers, and the linux piece is growing faster and becoming business critical...thus the need for this person. Being the senior linux person here, I want to dedicate myself to linux, which will leave a gap in the windows support. This new role would be to fill in that windows gap, and support linux with me, bridging the gaps in both areas. This will be only a temp/contract position. Typically the contract is for 3 months, but all other contractors here stay until they find perminant rolls (here or elsewhere). There are also other factors that will be discussed if you make it to the interview process. Are you using Absolute links( ex /usr/share ) or Relative (ex ../../usr/share)? What apears as the link on the client? Does the link apear, or is it just a empty dir?
