Hi all, My organization is considering submitting an application to the FCC for a non-commercial full power radio station. An FCC window for applications will open sometime in early 2007. I need an engineer who has the resources and willingness to help us with this. I know there is mapping of spectrum involved and I know we must submit engineering data to the FCC with our application. I just don't know any engineers who can do this, so I thought I'd toss it out here. Our agency is a non-profit PEG station located in Athol, Massachusetts. We need to find alternatives to communications because the future of cable access television is constantly in jeopardy. I can explain more if you like. Any resources you might be able to offer would be great. We do have a small stipend we can offer, so it's not a totally freebie job. Xandros/Debian newbie question

Being a trusting fellow and having faith in Tux magazine in particular, I decided to spend $60 on Xandros 4 Desktop Linux, based on a review in the Septmeber issue. >From the review it appeared that Xandros was like a better version of Freespire/Linspire: even more useful software like RealPlayer out of the box, better documentation and support, and at least as easy to ise. Whatever software wasn't included directly in the distro, I figured, would be available with one or two clicks from Xandros networks- or at least from Debian. Problem is, there seems to be very little software available from Xandros networks (maybe 50 packages), and my 4 year old daughter's favorite software gcompris is not available. (By the way, she's going to get her own computer soon, and she says she would never run Windows, only Linux.) Xandros warns you against selecting any other repository other than their own, yet I (recklessly?)selected the "unsupprted debian site" as a second repository- but with no luck - still no gcompris and few choices. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas ? (Thanks in advance. You guys are great!) -Dr. Andrew B. Truecrypt and Backups

Hi there, These two topics are completely unrelated. I was going to mention this tonight but it slipped my mind... A) I was curious if anyone is or has use(d) the truecrypt file system (truecrypt.org) If so do you have any recommendations or possible alternatives. I am thinking of using truecrypt for a partition on a USB thumb drive. B) Backups -- Giving finite resources/knowledge what software do people use to do full backups? Simple is better. And drive images are an option. I'm actually proxying this question for someone not on this list. Any insight is useful. Looking for a new system

Guys, I've been looking around for a new system at home, basically to act as a file server (NFS, Samba) and backup server using Bacula. It also needs to run http and mysql and other daemons as needed. I'd like to get at least a pair of 250gb drives to mirror them for storage, with LVM volumes on top. And of course room for expansion to another pair of drives down the line. But I'd like it smallish and quiet as well. Oh yeah, it needs to have a PCI slot for a SCSI controller, since my tape drive is SCSI for backups. Desires: - small - cheap - quiet - low power - boots without a keyboard/mouse needed at all - onboard video (don't really need it at all) - PCI slots for expansion - four 3.5" drive bays internally - SATA ports on board - AMD or VIA EPIA - 1Gb of RAM or more. I've looked at the Via EPIA style systems. Just not sure if they have enough oomph for what I want. The other thought is to just take my old Dell Precision dual cpu Xeon 550mhz box and make that my main server, holding all my data, etc. It's got the drive bays, and PCI slots and scsi controller all in there already. I could add in some SATA controllers for the new disks without a problem. And it would continue to hold my ISA 8-port serial card. And it's got the memory for what it would be doing pretty much as well. Then I'd just get a new system for my desktop with a much smaller disk drive. need to test notebook

A friend of mine just got a used notebook computer, but it has no AC adapter, and the battery is dead. He'd like to test it out before he invests any significant money into it. I'm wondering if anyone has an AC adapter for a Dell Inspiron 18000 and would be willing to bring it to the meeting, so we can see if this thing will fire up. And does anyone know of a good place to get used parts locally (like an AC adapter)? Thanks, Greg

I'm trying to install Altova XMLSpy, following instructions at http://www.altova.com/support_platform_linux.html and saw the comment: "Copy the complete 2006 Relewase 4 installation directory from Windows to the Linux partition (this avoids any installer-related issues); this should be an installation where you have already requested/purchased and entered a key-code, because the key-code request mechanism doesn’t currently work under WINE." so I guess I follow the rules and enter the key-code I have in hand using Windows to enter the key-code, then "Copy the complete 2006 ..." etc etc Any better ideas? Who are people using for shared web/email hosting? I'm looking for IMAP/POP/webmail over SSL (I need all three over SSL), plus light web hosting for a vanity domain. (Don't need crypto for the website.) Virtual servers seem to be out of my price range, but the shared hosting services fit my budget (c. $10/month). That is, if I check the properties of my 'Evolution' icon on my desktop, the Launcher gives this for the command: "evolution-2.6" Presumably, the path for this application is defined in a list of 'default paths.' Smart package manager

Greg Avedissian mentioned the Smart package manager (http://labix.org/smart) as an alternative, so I gave it a try. The Smart package manager appears to be Linux distribution agnostic. It works on systems whose package management is based on RPM, APT, APT-RPM, YUM, etc. I tried it on my laptop, where I was having the most performance issues with YaST's software handling program. I am quite pleased with the Smart package manager! Thanks, Greg, for the recommendation! I haven't yet installed the Smart package manager on my "good" system, but I probably will if Novell doesn't fix YaST in OpenSuSE 10.2. The Smart package manager has found a permanent home on my laptop. Software to use with APC UPS?

I've acquired an APC SmartUPS and plugged it into my server that runs Debian 3.1 (sarge). The Powerchute disc that came with it says it has versions for Red Hat, SuSE, TurboLinux, and a couple other distros, but they don't mention Debian. I haven't looked at the contents of the CD yet, but I bet there are some interesting alternatives from other sources than APC. What software would you guys suggest I try with the UPS? I don't have X installed on the server, so command-line is the way to go, but a web interface would be neat! -- Rich

Ndiswrapper alternative?

Hi every1, Thanks a lot for replying so quickly. I know Intel has released proprietary source code drivers for my wireless card but compiling it is such a lot of hassle it needs ieee but my system says ieee is already installed. Ndiswrapper on the other hand is easier to setup. As for the certificates yes definitely I have downloaded both and linked them in the conf file. I am pretty sure it is not a driver problem since the error comes as 'authentication timed out.' The light for Wifi also blinks frequently when the driver is configured so maybe that also suggests that the drive is properly installed. WPI wireless setup on ubuntu linux

Hi every1, I am glad to know there is a local linux community alive. I was really looking forward to joining the WPI linux association but couldn't find anything related at the activities fair at WPI. Could anyone tell me their website, when their meetings are, or perhaps can I meet a member from the association? Secondly, to setup wireless connection with WPI on-campus, I followed the instructions on a WPI webpage (a private one-i googled my problem and came up with this but sadly it isn't appearing now) and the CCC webpage but to no avail. Could anyone help me out with this-please? Anyways I would really like to meet any linux dudes like me so just drop by anytime you like-I am at Institute Hall 105. I don't know whether this would help, but here's what I did to setup the wireless: 1. installed ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant 2. setup the driver using ndiswrapper and intel 3945 driver's inf file 3. Configured ifconfig and iwconfig for wlan0 4. Ran the following command: wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -i wlan0 -D ndiswrapper It's here I run into problems-I get the following output: ioctl[SIOCSIWSCAN]: Resource temporarily unavailable Failed to initiate AP scan. Trying to associate with 00:15:e8:df:ad:40 (SSID='WPI-Wireless' freq=0 MHz) Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out. CTRL-EVENT-TERMINATING - signal 2 received Failed to disable WPA in the driver. ioctl[SIOCSIWAP]: Resource temporarily unavailable Am I doing something wrong? Do you have any suggestions. Never mind. Got my answer from Novell's website. My "other thought" was indeed correct. There's tons more software on the 2 DVD's than on the 5 CD's. The Novell web page even lists *exactly* which packages the CD's don't contain. I don't have a DVD drive on the Suse Linux 9.2 laptop, but I was able to read the Inkscape .rpm file on my Windows laptop which *does* have a DVD drive. Then I ftp'd the file to my Linux laptop and did an install from a local directory. The box the software came in prominently lists, as an included program, Inkscape, the open-source vector graphics editor. The mystery is that I can find no reference to Inkscape anywhere in the system, not even in Yast when searching in the "Install and Remove Software" dialog. Now perhaps I messed up and didn't choose Inkscape during the initial install, but shouldn't Yast still list Inkscape as a "Not Installed" package? My other thought is that perhaps Inkscape is included when you install from the 2 DVD's, but somehow Novell messed up and didn't include it on the 5 CD's. Thanks, Doug
