(I did goof last week as you may recall announcing 7/13, but the plan remains: REALLY: 7/23 thursday. 6pm--9?whatever and it's perfectly OK to be late. no RSVP required. I'm ready for good or bad weather or both :) I've setup tunes (linux/soundblaster/mp3's) in my 2-car garage, with garage/protected space for picnic table and more. The BBQ grill needs moving, then everything will be together/nearby in the garage+driveway, or on the lawn if we are blessed with suddenly perfect weather.The aboveground pool is open too. (from monitors whose cables are not molded on! ) I need a bunch for work... a remote to-be-shutdown-site simpleton packed up LCD monitors and shipped them to the mother ship withOUT cables. I have a semi-new job at EMC, the mother ship/flotilla in Hopkinton. True, I could buy 10 cables for maybe $20 on ebay. 2) Coming to the WLUG bbq next thursday 7/13 at my house in Boylston? (details later, perhaps by Andy). I'll be shopping for that soon, Soliciting ideas and "I'll be there" (or not) reply-to-me appreciated. (BYOB, bring your kids/dogs/SO's, the cheesy aboveground pool is working) Idea hunting: burgers,dogs(easy); sausages?(more challenging, what's a good brand/type that won't turn my grill into an inferno?). Healthy side dishes? (can't think of any at the moment. Maybe you'll bring something or suggest something easy). Chips: normal like Lays/Ruffles? exotic like Cape Cod? Salsa+cornchips? I'm trying to extend the functionality of a piece of CAD software i'm using. The software package is called eagle and it has a custom in application scripting language that allows you to access an open CAD document by manipulating a tree of objects. The scripting language is fairly limited when it comes to talking to the outside world and only offers rudimentary file IO. I was wondering if any of you know how to make one end of a unix socket look like a file?

Time and Date Stamp on Traceroute?

Does anyone know a quick command I can use to add a time and date stamp to traceroute? Man page for traceroute doesn't seem to have that option. Or is there a similar traceroute-type app that does incorporate this function? I need a quick app (nothing that generates a significant amount of network traffic) --where I can enter one command in terminal which will display a printout of a traceroute, to show the ISP or to show the tech in real-time when he comes out. The one I send the ISP needs the time/date in order to be effectively convincing to them. We're supposed to get 20,000 kb/s (up) here, and quite often, we're not, even with very low internet use in the PCs I'm running here. Even the download speed's choking... seems like something big right close is often are clogging the pipe. Traceroute I'm doing is only going from here to Cambridge. I did install a couple of other traceroute-type apps (such as tcptraceroute) but their man pages didn't seem to show this capability either. I liked tcptraceroute because it has a "don't fragment" option. Would like to time/date-stamp that. Thanks, Liz J

Log Rotation (Snapshot)

I'm trying to setup a secondary log rotation mechanism on on of my production systems. Right now, the system is setup to rotate logs on a weekly basis. In addition to the weekly log rotation, I also need to take hourly snapshots (i.e. just the deltas between snapshots). As part of this process, I can not delete the original file since that is being handled by the weekly log rotation and archival process. These files get pretty big, so IO and CPU are both concerns. Any suggestions?

KVM to SUN converter??

I'm not sure what I am talking about. I know that the terminal for my SUN ULTRA1 is different than the terminal for my DELL PC. I have purchased a IOGEAR KVM switch. CentOS 4.7 webserver help

Heya - I reformatted my server and installed CentOS, but somehow I've fscked things up. I have a heterogeneous network that is about 40% winxp, 40% amigaos/morphos, and this server. In addition to the web stuff, I've considered making it a PDC for the win machines, but that's maybe just a dream. For a few days I could reach it, but now I can't, and from the server itself localhost doesn't seem to be working. It would take someone more familiar with linux minutes to straighten things out probably, but I just don't have a lot of time. I live in Sutton, about 10 miles from Worcester down Rt 146. I'm usually around Sat afternoons or Sundays, and usually have food and beer around, but not a lot of money. Thanks, everyone. I have learned allot. I have eight computers in my home office. One is a SUN ULTRA 1, the rest are various makes and models of PC desktop machines. On these I have Windows plus Linux (Aurora and Red Hat Fedora. Why do I have these machines? That's what my wife asks. Maybe in my dotage I have become victim to a hoarding syndrome I am trying to get organized so I purchased a "IOGEAR 8-Port KVM Switch Kit, PS/2,with KVM Cables (GCS78KIT)" from amazon.com. They gave me free shipping and handling. My conclusion after reading this thread is that I need one "13W3-to-VGA" adapter to connect the ULTRA to the KVM switch. Stephen Thamel has one available.
