I suspect the amount you would pay at the animal shelter would PALE next to what you are going to pay for vet bills, spaying/neutering (usually done around 6 mos as I recall), food, etc. So despite your comment, I'll plug these guys: http://www.worcester-arl.org/catsAdoption.html But for another source, people are giving away kittens all the time on Worcester freecycle. non-Linux: Looking for a free kitten locally

I know I have not ever sent an email, but I've been on the mailing list for some time. Been extremely interested in going to meetings but just have not done so yet. If you are local, and have healthy kittens to give away or know anyone who does locally (I live in Lancaster, about 20 minutes away from Worcester), please respond. Looking to just get one, at maximum 5 months old. I have been scouring the web and craigslist and have not found much. I do not really want to drop the amount they want at the local animal shelter. SCSI and laptop

I bought a new laptop but have an old umax scanner. Previously I used a PCMCIA SCSI card to hookup that scanner. My new laptop has expresscard. What is the easiest way to hookup the old scanner? PC-BSD, FreeBSD, and iXsystems - anyone know about them?

I have pretensions of hacker status someday. ;-] They are selling a desktop with PC-BSD installed and configured. I'm thinking about buying their new Apollo rig, http://www.ixsystems.com/apollo and ask them to install some kind of virtual machine software on top of FreeBSD (or PC-BSD) so that I can learn various linux distros running as clients. Virtual Machine Manager

Anyone familiar with virtual machine manager and kvm. I'm having some issues with a windows virtual machine. The system is Fedora 11 and the virtual machine is Windows 2008 Server. If I start the virtual machine from the virtual machine manager, it only has a single cpu despite my setting it to eight. If I start the machine from the command line, I can get four cpus but not eight. In both cases windows seem to display the eight cpus in the device manager (or whatever program it is). It has been suggest that windows was imaged on a four core machine before being loaded on the eight core machine and that something in windows is maxing at four cores. But that doesn't explain why the virtual machine manager can only start one cpu. I just played around on my home machine with a fedora 10 live cd and it recognized the two cores on that machine and used them from the virtual machine manager without problem. Also upped it to three cpus without problem.

(I did goof last week as you may recall announcing 7/13, but the plan remains: REALLY: 7/23 thursday. 6pm--9?whatever and it's perfectly OK to be late. no RSVP required. VGA cables ; BBQ

I'm trying to extend the functionality of a piece of CAD software i'm using. The software package is called eagle and it has a custom in application scripting language that allows you to access an open CAD document by manipulating a tree of objects. The scripting language is fairly limited when it comes to talking to the outside world and only offers rudimentary file IO. I was wondering if any of you know how to make one end of a unix socket look like a file?

Time and Date Stamp on Traceroute?

Does anyone know a quick command I can use to add a time and date stamp to traceroute? Man page for traceroute doesn't seem to have that option. Or is there a similar traceroute-type app that does incorporate this function? I need a quick app (nothing that generates a significant amount of network traffic) --where I can enter one command in terminal which will display a printout of a traceroute, to show the ISP or to show the tech in real-time when he comes out. The one I send the ISP needs the time/date in order to be effectively convincing to them. We're supposed to get 20,000 kb/s (up) here, and quite often, we're not, even with very low internet use in the PCs I'm running here. Even the download speed's choking... seems like something big right close is often are clogging the pipe. Traceroute I'm doing is only going from here to Cambridge. I did install a couple of other traceroute-type apps (such as tcptraceroute) but their man pages didn't seem to show this capability either. I liked tcptraceroute because it has a "don't fragment" option. Would like to time/date-stamp that. Thanks, Liz J

Log Rotation (Snapshot)

I'm trying to setup a secondary log rotation mechanism on on of my production systems. Right now, the system is setup to rotate logs on a weekly basis. In addition to the weekly log rotation, I also need to take hourly snapshots (i.e. just the deltas between snapshots). As part of this process, I can not delete the original file since that is being handled by the weekly log rotation and archival process. These files get pretty big, so IO and CPU are both concerns. Any suggestions?
