Hi all, I am considering replacing my old broken screen laptop (Pent 350 & 256MB) with a replacement. Does anyone recommendations on $400 to $600 laptops for Linux with a regular 15" or so screen and at least 2-4GB RAM. I am going with a low-spec (and low cost) as I have used the laptop an hour or two a week in the past as for daily use my eyes prefer my desktop's 24" widescreen LCD. In this price range I am mostly finding Netbooks and the occasional low end Acer (newegg). I could handle the speed of a netbook but my older and poor eyes would protest (and the additional RAM cost makes them spendy-ish for what you get). Problem with wireless access point(?)

I may put Linux on it sometime in the near future. While I can get connected to it with my Linux laptop, I notice that file transfers start at a screamingly fast rate, and within a minute or two, drop to barely a trickle. When I used an entirely hard wired connection, I have no such problem. Has anybody else noticed this with the Linksys WRT54GL? If so, will the Linux software solve this problem? I don't believe that the problem lies with the wireless hardware/software in my laptop since I have used it on other wireless access points without problems. If I do need a Workgroup name for the router, how do I do that? Thanks, Liz J Hi Liz What's humorous is the difference between the words "Default" and "default". Most routers may allow you to log on, but subsequent packets of data may not verify correctly, hence the speed loss. As noted by Andy, wireless always defaults to the slowest speed connected. (I seem to have a lot of neighbors that try to break in to my network and when they do at G, B or even A speed the router slows and that tells me that somethings up and I can do something about it.) Mounting Windows Shares on Solaris

Hi All, Maybe a bit [OT], but I've got a Solaris 10u8 host, and I'd like to be able to mount a Windows share on the Solaris box. I don't think Solaris supports the smbfs or cifs file systems (at least I can't find any evidence of it). So a command like: "mount -F smbfs //windows-host/share /mnt" won't work. Has anyone done this? I've installed all the samba executables in /usr/bin and in /usr/sbin on the Solaris box, so there is samba support in Solaris, but I can't seem to mount the Windows share. My head hurts! Can anyone help? :-) I'm googling like crazy but for the life of me can not find any information on the values of the usage flags displayed in GnuPG when you --edit-key and list. For example (from a website): pub 4096R/7C11053D created: 2009-10-12 expires: never usage: SC trust: ultimate validity: ultimate sub 4096R/55D59203 created: 2009-10-12 expires: never usage: E Maybe it's obvious but does anyone know the value of "SC" and "E". And, how about the value of all potential flags? My problem involves other flags. I assumed I could find this in 30 seconds. No go. I can't find anything about key details. Ok, ill use my android for this one. Nix based I'm sure you know. Anyway my newest projects include an openbsd firewall. Either a free or open bsd server for private and a few friends use. My dell laptop is a joke and my debian box is stable for once having troubles with *pythonwx-2.8 and its related packages so playonlinux is not installable till I at least solve the problem. As a followup to a discussion we had after the WLUG meeting, here are some good pages to read about how FiOS works. Verizon is using Passive Optical Networking, either BPON or GPON depending on the CO. The downstream side is shared, since by its very nature a PON's downstream direction is broadcast on a single wavelength--the light goes from the OLT to every customer's ONT on the PON "tree". For privacy each customer's downstream traffic is "encrypted" so only the intended ONT/customer can decrypt it. The upstream side is shared via TDMA since only one customer's ONT can trasmit at a time on the single upstream wavelength "up the tree" towards to root of the PON where the OLT lives...each ONT gets a "time slot" for upstream transmissions. writing at 1GB/s ?

WLUG'ers, At work, i might be getting a piece of instrumentation in my lab that that is capable of out putting out 1GB of data per second. In the past i was pretty pleased to write 60MB/s under real-world conditions on my linux systems a few years back. I just wanted to ping the group about this. Does anyone know if a hard drive or even memory come close to writing data at this speed on a linux system? Or, what might the limit for data rates on a linux PC these days. From my google'ing it appears hard drives top out at around 100MB/s. Note: This piece of instrumentation has onboard memory for writing, which i'll probably have to use, but if there was a way to stream the data, it would be preferable. Thanks, -- brad

Fellow Linux Users, Does anyone have any recommendations for a cheap, relatively Apache/MySQL/PHP web and POP/IMAP email host? Preferably someplace local. It doesn’t have to be too powerful. A few gigabytes of storage space and max bandwidth in the range of tens of gigabytes per month. Thanks Nick
