Computer Recycling - Wlug Digest, Vol 88, Issue 6

Just before moving from the Portland, Oregon area back to Massachusetts, I did have the proverbial closet of old computer equipment. Portland had a place that you could bring this equipment to for recycling. They charged a small fee to take the equipment off your hands with the commitment that they would refurbish it or otherwise recycle it. Of course Portland had such a strong green ethos that a business like this could flourish there. If you can come up with a special niche market, like a car/boat/RV computer or a DVR/HDTV computer for a particular market that has some kind of Television access problem, then you may find a way to profit. It is very hard to go up against the low-end and sale machines at the stores. If you are a great seller, you may be able to talk your way into some customers. In Florida, there are a couple of small companies doing neighborhood wifi internet access for a great price, but even they depend more on the internet charges and the computer service calls than on system sales. Service and training seems like the most profitable part of the picture to me. Still, I hope you find a way to do this. I hope I don't sound too negative. I'm just a regular guy without any strict training or a business degree, so I'm certainly not the last word on the subject. DaveC -- David P. I remember while working on my MBA trying to work out how to run a small for profit local PC and support business aimed at home consumers and an occasional small business. The short answer at the time was the advent of the "shiny new $450 PC" made computers toaster-ish (breaks - put in basement/closet - buy another). In the ensuing decade plus since I have confirmed two things IMHO: 1) The price of entry level PCs are going even lower. I haven't looked but I bet there are refurbs out there for $200-ish. This fact makes it harder for a consumer to pay even $25 for someone to work on their (likely 2 to 6 years old on average) PC whether in a shop or in the home. The business person's reasoning is "good money after bad". Not sure why home consumers do this, but they do. 2) Most non-IT geeks have a small closet/basement pile of PCs somewhere in their house if they haven't moved within the decade. Moving of course drives people into momentary sanity with "Why am I keeping / saving / moving all this useless junk?" Geeks of course re-use them as personal firewalls / coffee warmers / Myth boxes / ways to communicate with aliens / ... App won't install... Printer cable won't connect... Adware and viruses got you slugging along... Bad device driver killing your uptime... Your 18 long hair cats packing the case with a fur effigy with expected heat & reboot issues... Consumers answer to all is: "Buy a new PC!" Ask around to non-geek friends/co-workers. You will be amazed. A family friend is on their 4th brand new computer in 3 years. I assure you the scope of work has not changed (web browsing, e-mail, facebook, etc). I am now wondering how do you get these closet PCs for cheap/free then image them to get them useful again. Obvious start is to get referrals from moving companies that quote household moves, then call offering to remove their unused PC's for free. Somewhere there must be a support group for home consumers who have their own Dell rep on speed dial. I am not bashing Dell here, merely using their name in the examples to make a point, Joel

Kernel Crash dump

HI guys, I finally got some type of crash dump from my system. I have tried Ubuntu variations of the 2.6.35, 2.6.36, and 2.6.37 kernels, all of which have crashed on me. Finally, 2.6.37 gave me a trace on the console screen. I had to copy it down by hand, so don't take it too literally. Here is the data. I intentionally left out all of the hex addresses in the call trace. It seems pretty obvious to me that something is amiss in the hardware. I wonder if my heat syncs are full of dust. That will be the first thing I check. Any helpful advice would be most appreciated. Thanks! Try leaving the mem test running for a while, see if it will do it with that running. Could have just been the dust too lol. Unstable Linux in recent releases

HI gang, I've read an awful lot of posts recently describing freezing or hanging systems in very recent versions of several Linux distributions. Unfortunately, I got one of them - Kubuntu 10.10 (I *knew* I shouldn't have upgraded from the very stable SuSE 10.1, except that it was quite old). My system arbitrarily hangs/freezes at unpredictable intervals. Sometimes I can make it happen 2 minutes after a reboot, and other times it takes a few days, but invariably, it does occur. I can usually induce it by doing something semi-stressful to the video, like watching something via mplayer, but it doesn't always occur. The postings I've seen appear to describe a wide variety of hardware and software configurations, and nobody can seem to find any error data in any log file. What I can't find is the solution, and I've googled extensively. Has anybody found anything online that talks about some very recently discovered bug and its fix that would cure the problem? Thanks! Unstable Linux in recent releases

In case no one made the connection between my previous messagesubject and this thread..... They are the same. I believe that the fix i pointed out is the cause of these "unstable" linux's. Certainly the fix worked for me. When I first booted with one of the fixed kernels it ran for a wk (before i rebooted). Previously my machine was hanging at least once per day and at some points every hour or so. And in answer to previous question, the machine was hung such that it was not possible to ssh into it or make it respond in any way. Indeed after using the power switch to turn off the machine I still had to pull the AC plug to get it to be able to reboot. I meant to say that I am now running vmlinuz-2.6.35.10-77.fc14.i686 from fedora 14 koji. Both the above kernel and vmlinuz-2.6.35.10-75.bz667459.fc14.i686 seem to resolve the issue. http://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/packages/kernel/2.6.35.10/77.fc14/ In fedora this problem seemed to show up with the 10-72 kernel and was perhaps even worse with 10-74 kernel.

hanging linux

I recently saw comments on this list about kernels that hang. Indeed that was/is true for fedora 14. The symptoms I saw were essentially a frozen screen with no mouse pointer etc... In my case I would actually have to power cycle (actually pulling the ac plug) my dell pc to reboot it. In my case I believe that the bug (in fedora land) was bz667459. see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=667459 I was a comments in this bug pointed me at a bug fix kernel "vmlinuz-2.6.35.10-75.bz667459.fc14.i686". This kernel resolved the problem. By the way, I have now upgraded (on friday) to vmlinuz-2.6.35.10-75.bz667459.fc14.i686 from koji which has also been stable.

Any it position will do, as for travel marlboro, framingham, etc are all fine by me, boston would be a bit far. My retail experience consists of: logistics, electronics sales, and hourly management. Prior to that I used to sell, repair and build computers. And would troubleshoot and set up networks. As well as contract programming. I'm a jack of all trades when it comes to computers really. Id actually like to avoid any linux positions as I'm not really sure how to rate my knowledge. I can install a working gentoo system without the handbook, if that gives any hints. Andy, I'm sorry, I got the emails mixed up. It could be a driver issue, but I only suspect that due to the freezing under heavy video load. Could I also suggest trying a different video card to eliminate hardware issues? The video card may have started to fail as you switched distros, unlikely but possible? Dec Meeting announcement / linux-raid problem

I just realized that I haven't received anything from WLUG in over a month, including the announcement for this past meeting. Did anybody else have this problem or is it just me? Now, the main reason for my email. My mythbox / home file server runs linux soft-raid in RAID5 with 3 500GB disks. One disk went bad a while ago and the array never rebuilt itself. The other day, the second disk went bad. Am I hosed? I've been googling for 'rebuild bad linux software raid' but all I get is the rebuild command. Also, I don't see any tools that will move bad data to another spot on the disk. This is my first time using software raid so I'm in a bit over my head. thanks! -- Eric Martin

Folks, I have always wondered at my ability to keep the myriad of LINUX instructions in my head. What would I do if I were to start losing them? Is there a tool to search for recall? Is there any way to go backwards in LINUX command land? If I were to remember that there is a command that will print on standard output the contents of a file in txt characters, but could not for the life of me remember 'more'. Where would I go for help (other than sending a email to this list serve)? All the command dictionaries I have are alphabetic. Ken Jones (the elder)

Unix/Linux command names were exactly what drove me crazy when I first had to use Unix. I wanted to list something on the terminal, or maybe type it. Who would have thought to "cat" it or "more" it. And then we have the aptly named utilities like "awk". I was so proud when it finally dawned on me what the letters "a" "w" and "k" stood for. So I eventually did learn all the commands, but I never thought about the problem of forgetting them until this digest entry. I had the same reaction to emacs in the beginning. Doing apropos in emacs is not helpful when the concept you associate with the task is nothing like the way it is named or described in Emacs. I have learned to write down in a diary on my computer every time I finally find the hard to find command in either Emacs or unix/linux. The next time I want to do the same thing and I have forgotten what the command is, and I finally give up trying to find it in emacs, I can search my diary. In this case, I just did 'man -k text' and the last things that popped up were 'zmore'. Plus a bunch of other system calls and library calls about text handling. Maybe pickup one of the linux for beginners books that O'Reilly puts out? Unix in a Nutshell, etc. That should help you find commands. Also, *any* text editor will let you read a text file, even if you don't want to edit it. disk/Raid ideas

You're hosed (i think) unless -- you're rich and you send the disks to a shop for megabucks (they may start with a trivial purchase of 2-3 identical model disks) -- OR IF your problem was NOT the actual platters/heads, YOU obtain 1-2 same-model disks, swap the board from a replacement disk onto your hosed disk ( w/ sm torx tool and brave fingers ) I've not done this myself yet. I HAVE had "stiction" problems where (after a power out or a "rest" so a disk bearing/lubricant gets a chance to harden) the disk just isnt spinning up. Of course, tapping/whacking it at the right/initial moment will usually cure that and you can feel if it's spinning or not....if you can hold it in your hand ...OR somehow get hands-on during powerup.
