Best 802.11abgn router?

Guys, I'm looking to replace my WAP54G (802.11bg) wireless access point. I really need to get more speed to the wife's computer, and I don't want to run wires. I'm thinking I'd like to get something that DD-WRT can run on, and possibly something with dual radios and/or dual 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz band, so I can have a secured network, and an open, slower network for guests. My home network looks like this: cable modem <---> router <----> GigE Lan switch <-- clients | | WAP54G Unfortunately, my router is only 100mb/s on each port, which is fine for WAN access, and most wireless, but not any more. And I don't want to replace it since it's a WRAP board from PC-engines running m0n0wall and doing a *great* job for what I need. Silent, no moving parts, easy to manage. Mostly, I want a fast, secure wireless WPA2 home wireless network. Maybe I'd keep the WAP54G around for public access... or maybe it's time to bite the bullet and replace my WRAP board with something better? I'm looking at the following: Netgear WNDR3700 Linksys E2000 Linksys WRT610N ASUS RT-N16 BUFFALO WZR-HP-G300NH (native DD-WRT support from factory!) Any hints or suggestions or feedback? We expect to have a panel of Linux community members speaking prior to the installs. Last year we had an estimated turnout of 50-75 students. So, to make a story short I am a new member to this group. I've been here, close to the Worcester area and would like to meet with you guys. I have been using Linux for the past 10 years without a LUG, so this time I would like to do things differently, and get together. Basically I wanted to say that I have been a lone ranger for the last 10 year. I have been to the website but there is no mentioned of the next meeting.

One question: is there anyone using qcad in linux? it is strange that the program can not print! it does not show up my installed printer at all. We have 1-2 positions open for PHP developers who are familiar with CMS's. - Drupal (what we are mainly seeking) - Module developers - Extremely familiar with the API (if hooks doesn't sound like a familiar term then we are not looking for you; sorry) - Strong knowledge of SQL (we mainly use MySQL DBs) - Strong knowledge of PHP - Theme development - Strong knowledge of CSS, including IE fixes and quirks (forcing IE quirks mode is last resort) - Strong knowledge of HTML/XHTML and semantics; simplest HTML possible (not using a million divs; not using tables for layout) - Familiarity with mobile site development - Able to keep/make fallbacks for those lacking JS or other features (familiarity with a 'enhancement as enhancements come along' kind of development; not a 'worse commmon denominator' development style) - Joomla - Able to work with the back-end and customise it - Themers (same skills as Drupal) - Module development a plus - vBulletin - Templates familiarity - General familiarity with the back-end - Modules/products development is a plus (so familiarity with the terribly documented API is a plus) - Magento is a plus - Module development (we do not need themers at the moment) If you know PHP that's great but we really are looking for the above mentioned skills, not just PHP. Also we are looking for Flash developers for small things that will heavily use DBs for data, not their own internal data. Basically if we can say we need X and you can produce it genericised enough to work with any CMS or anything custom that we have already made but just needs the Flash element to be finished. We have an OpenSolaris server. All the GNU core utils are there as well as their POSIX-standard versions (default). Emacs, Vim, etc installed. We use Subversion for versioning so familiarity with that is a plus. We keep a KB so anything that is funky can be documented nicely. This is contract work; pay is hourly. Truly Ancient Laptop

We have here an ancient laptop -- Epson ActionNote 4SLC2-50. Belonged to my ancient father, who thought I might find some use for it. It's about 12" x 10" x 2" and not terribly light for its size. Built like a small tank --appears to be somewhat indestructible. Comes in its own rather decent black leather-like case. Has modem, battery brick, diskette drive, PS2 port, parallel port, two serial ports and a phone jack. It even comes with its own PS2 mouse which has a very stylish decal of Tweety Bird. The user guide is dated 1993. This runs Windows MS-DOS-whatever it was, still has operating system installed. Worked fine last time we turned it on. Memory is upgraable. I hope someone can give this a good home. Maybe you have a computer museum in your basement --this would be the perfect addition. Maybe you need this to run some special utilities at home... I'm sure this is infinitely modifiable. Hate to send this poor thing to the dump. Daddy is still living... would like to be able to tell him (if he ever asks) that the old laptop has been happily repurposed. We're located in a very easy-to-find spot in Worcester, less than a block off Elm Park. Someone must need this unit. We want you to want this. Thanks, Liz J

Greetings, I'm reaching out to do some professional networking to see if I can send out a unique job posting to the Worcester Linux User Group. We are looking for a seasoned Linux Admin for a unique role to work for the vaccine division of a local pharmaceutical company based here in Cambridge, MA. This position is a long-term contract approved through the end of this year with the likelihood of extending long-term, possibly perm. The role will have 'one foot' in IS, and the other in the Bioinformatics group. The focus of the role is administering a Linux cluster, supporting research scientists with some data modeling, supporting various relational databases etc. The Bioinformatics group will be moving to Cambridge so they will be replacing/upgrading the existing Linux cluster. The ideal candidate will have prior experience supporting several PhD level scientists with computational backgrounds, virology/biology as well as many other disciplines. It is a very visible role in that there is a huge initiative to strengthen the IS support specifically for the Bioinformatics organization. The hourly pay rate range on a W-2 contract basis (will not consider 1099 candidates) and the rate range is approximately $45-75/hour based on education and experience. PROJECT DESCRIPTION* This SOW covers the costs associated with providing a Bioinformatics technical support resource in the R&D IS team as a resource to participate in and support the following R&D IS activities and projects: · Implementing, testing and and managing applications used by Scientists working in the Sanofi Pasteur R&D Global Bioinformatics and Genomics group. This group uses both commercial and proprietary scientific computing applications running on LINUX, Mac OS X, Solaris, and Windows. · Resource will be responsible for providing application support, including building applications from source, managing the deployment and scheduling of software applications on Unix/Linux clusters, migrating and configuring applications and ensuring inter-operability between applications. · Providing effective communication between the IS infrastructure team (who provide LINUX, UNIX, Windows, and Oracle support), the R&D IS team, and the business users. · Development of standardized data management (loading, updates, maintenance) and support procedures for specific applications, including Biowisdom SRS. · Providing training to users on specialized applications as needed. · Participating in the development and approval of standardized documentation for these processes, following Sanofi Pasteur documentation standards. · Maintaining a high level of client satisfaction while meeting response time guidelines. · Resolving Client Support Incidents and effectively communicate status, solutions and/or workarounds to clients. · Properly documenting actions taken on all work for Client Support Incidents. · Other specific projects to be defined by R&D IS management as needed. TIMEFRAME* The contractor is required from July 1, 2010 through to December 31, 2010, with the possibility of extension to 2011, depending on budget availability, project portfolio needs, and performance. DELIVERABLES In addition to the project-specific deliverables described in the Scope of Work, the following deliverables may be required from the contractor for each project worked on: Project Plan A high-level project plan using Microsoft Project will be developed in the early stage of each project. The plan will list high level timelines and resource requirements. This plan will be further refined once the requirements document is complete. This plan will be reviewed and approved by a Sanofi Pasteur R&D IS representative. If the contractor is not the project lead then they will provide input to this document. Requirements Document A requirements document will be developed in our IS eDoc document management system. This document will be developed through requirements gathering meetings with the business user and through requirements review sessions with the IS technical team. This document will be approved through the IS eDoc workflow process. If the contractor is not the project lead then they will need to provide input to this document. Development If the contractor is a developer on the project he/she will develop or modify the code necessary to meet the requirements document. He/she will also unit test the code that has been developed or modified prior to delivering it to the project lead and business user for user acceptance testing. If the contractor is the project lead he/she will provide direction to the developers throughout this stage. Testing The contractor will oversee the testing of the changes to the system by developing test scripts with the help of the business users. These test scripts will trace back to each individual requirement in the requirements document. These test scripts will be developed in IS eDoc and reviewed and approved through the IS eDoc workflow process. Implementation The contractor will oversee moving of the changes to the system into production. He/she will ensure all necessary documentation is approved and closed out in IS eDoc and the EPM time management system. POSITION REQUIRED (ROLE) A Technical Support Analyst with Bioinformatics experience is required for this role. Technical expertise requirements include: · Experience with Windows and Linux/UNIX operating systems are essential (Mac OS X and Solaris will be an asset), and experience with distributed computing is required. · Proficiency with RDBMS-based (MySQL, Postgresql, Oracle) applications and database concepts. · Proficiency with UNIX text processing tools and shell scripting. · Proficiency with a major programming language (e.g. C/C+); scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python) · Understanding of web server, networking and network protocols. · Solid understanding of the software development cycle, including testing methodologies and change management control, and experience out-sourcing and managing software development, · Demonstrated previous experience supporting bioinformatics tools and applications. Examples may include molecular modeling applications, sequence analysis packages, genomic data analysis tools and data integration applications. · Able to use Microsoft Office tools. Professional requirements include: · Resourceful problem solver with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to express technical ideas clearly · Able to work effectively within a team environment. · Good written and verbal communication skills required to deliver high quality Client Support and reliable follow-up to clients. · Demonstrated ability to promptly handle problems, providing status updates, and documenting the problem and resolution. · Present technical & functional ideas clearly while checking for client understanding. · Experience in developing technical documentation. · Experience with software testing, including development of test plans and detailed test scripts based on requirements and design documentation. PC to Home Stereo Solution

Is it me or is there no good solution to streaming your OGG and FLAC music files to your home stereo from Linux. Even the Windows solutions seem sparse and are usually proprietary. I have wanted to do this for a long time and every time I start googling for a solution I come up empty. Does anyone have any experience with this? I would appreciate your comments. Hi folks, Our next WLUG meeting is scheduled to be held on Thursday, July 8 at 7:00 PM in Morgan Hall at the WPI campus in Worcester, MA USA. This is an informal open meeting. Anyone who is interested in a certain topic, feel free to come to the meeting and discuss it. There has been a lot of talk about streaming music to stereo systems, so I suggest we talk about that. We'll also discuss the WLUG BBQ which is on for August! We'll go out for pizza afterwards. Grub and E-Waste

Two somewhat related questions. I went to a USB keyboard after my PS keyboard broke. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. How do I get GRUB to recognize the keyboard? Second, where do I get rid of the broken keyboard? Does Worcester have an E-Waste recycling center? Thanks. Ted
