Hi gang, The WLUG BBQ is coming up next week, Wednesday, August 10, starting at 6pm. Thanks to those who volunteered to bring items, and thanks to our hostess Liz Johnson. We'll have hot dogs, burgers, bratwurst, all the fixings, some chips/snacks, salad and soda. The grill will be fired up if anyone has something else they'd like to grill, and desserts would be welcome as well. There will be a cooler or two and some ice for BYOB. People should bring a lawn chair for themselves if they wish to sit down. Based on past BBQ's, I'm expecting about 15-20 people, perhaps more. The address: 34 Hudson St, Worcester, MA (It is a green house, one house south of Elm St. Elm St runs east/west along Elm Park and Hudson St is one block east of Park Ave.) Look for a "WLUG" sign on the city light pole, as well as a big Tux Penguin. X apps no longer work with sudo after upgrade to Squeeze

Summary: After upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze, I can no longer execute X apps using sudo in an ssh session. Why not, and how can I restore this ability? Details: I just got around to upgrading [1] a server to from Debian Lenny to Debian Squeeze. Normally I access it via ssh with X forwarding so that I can display any X apps on my workstation [2]. I have root logins disabled and use sudo instead when I wish to run an app as root. Under Lenny, I could execute X apps under sudo and they would display just fine, for example: sudo xless some-file [prompts for my password] [xless opens in a window on my workstation] Under Squeeze, the attempt fails with an error message: sudo xless some-file [prompts for my password] X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication. Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0 Googling "X forwarding sudo" gives me lots of explanations about .Xauthority and cookies but nothing that explains why I should now need to manage this myself when I didn't need to before. Can anyone set me straight? MP3 playback in Fedora

I'm thinking about switch over to CentOS from Gentoo at work for a few reasons, two of which are the compile time and the ability to check packages against GPG signatures. That being the case, I decided to convert my desktop to Fedora so I can get my chops up on yum and the RedHat style distros. it's going ok and I'm getting pretty good at figuring out where to find things, and I'm even looking at writing an RPM or two where I need stuff. However, I can't seem to get MP3, Mpeg1 or Mpeg2 playback working, and I can't get adobe-flash to install via the nspluginwrapper. I've googled, installed a bunch of packages that people suggested and even checked what packages I have on my Gentoo system and installed some of those but I'm stuck. I have Adobe-Flash installed as well as nspluginwrapper, but the commands I find online aren't wrapping the plugin. I installed libmpeg2 and libmpeg3 but I still can't play movies or mp3s. Would anyone at all be interested in helping build a new website? I can't share too many details, as it will be commercial, but i need someone who has experience with HTML/CSS/Javascript/PHP/AJAX/MySql and preferably experience setting up a version control system (server). Parts of this project will end up being open source (the chat server for the web site already is). If anyone knows any of this, or even if they feel they can lend a hand with part of it, It would be much appreciated. More details will be given in direct emails, provided a good faith non-disclosure agreement is acceptable. No signing anything, just an email stating you agree not to disclose the details of this project, prior to its release. This project will benefit the open source community if it is successful. Lights going dim, concerned about compouters & assoc. equip.

Hi all, I think we have a bad refrigerator here, possibly problems also compounded by an inadequate elex cicsuit. Elex is owned & paid by landlord, who thinks this is "no big deal" & "happens all the time No problem." Maintence is not this building owner's favorite occupation. Person is on a tight budget just like most of the rest of the world. Proibem: Lights go dim whenever dying refrigerator comes on. This unit rins apprix 40 minutes per every hour, even on cool days with minimum opening/closing. I am concerned about longevity and function of my computers. power supplies, modem and router (I own these & they are nice). One printer already fried when Handyman shorted hot and cold elex together in the process of replacing one light swich in kitchen. Hope never to see him again, he's not a bright bulb. Is there some way to monitor the currrent on the elex line for several days and record what's going on? If so, does someone have a monitoring device that could be loaned and set up to do this? I am in Woircester near Elm Park, & am a very good cook. Have decent chairs & workspace with fast internet... could provide free beer & P1zzA or lunch if needed during setup period. RHEL cluster question...

Greetings, fellow Linux lovers; Ran into a little situation today where we need to cycle power/reboot a bunch of nodes that are down and out, by telnet to the relevant terminal server ports and the advanced management module. This involves multiple consoles, windows, command line, GUI, the works, as follows: Subject: RHEL cluster, 4.0 through 5.3. Issue: How to find IP addresses of terminal server ports which service individual nodes which are down and out. (need to telnet to them for troubleshooting/maintenance/rebooting) And: IP address and/or hostname of advanced management module which runs on the clusters . Some clusters have a "magic decoder ring" file that gives this information; most don't. Any thoughts? Workaround so far has been via eyeballing racks of blades and doing various arithmetic problems in our heads.

Guys, I've got an old home system for the kids. Works fine, but I've only got 768Mb of RAM in it. Anyone got any 512Mb or 1Gb DIMMS they want to sell? DDR, PC2700 is what I need. It's around $30/ea for 1Gb Dimms on newegg, which just isn't justified. It's almost more cost effective to get a new motherboard/cpu/RAM for this system instead. Thanks! John P.S. My Tivo, Series 2 has died finally, after 8+ years. I can't get my original 40Gb disk and mfstools 2.0 backup image to boot. Sigh... could be a power supply issue, but again, is it worth the money to fix or should I just get a premiere instead? --

Linux Ham Radio CD available for download

Hi Everybody, I have created a remastered Linux CD of Ubuntu 10.10 which contains a selection of Amateur Radio software. Several of you were kind enough to beta test this CD and offer feedback, for which I thank you. This CD has been released and is now available for download from SourceForge: http://kb1oiq-andysham.sourceforge.net/ The software selection is optimized for older x86 32-bit computers that have at least a 1GHz processor and 256MB of memory, but naturally, if you have more than that, the software will work just fine. Another idea is open source robotics. I have a lot of experience with this at this point and would love to share. One more idea would be talking about making and using custom Java JNI. have a library that's awesome but hate writing applications in C? JNI is a way of exposing these libs to Java. As an example I wrapped a v4l2 frame grabber and was able to get framerates 2-4 TIMES faster then OpenCV's frame grabber. Getting started with JNI is full of "gotchas" that keeps most developers away, which I think is a shame. ~Kevin Harrington

I would like to, by I do not have intimate knowledge of it. I know its an improved version of gentoos baselayout 1 RC system. Its written in c instead of scriptss, can do some parallel startups, but nowhere near anything like systemd. And I can write simple init scripts for it. WLUG meeting idea - Distro comparison

I am setting up a new laptop and trying to decide on which distro to go with... Probably the same list of finalists as everyone else in no particular order (Red Hat / CentOS / Fedora / Ubuntu / Gentoo / others). Has WLUG done a disto comparison night meeting? I think it might be interesting. Each person bring in a laptop with their favorite mainstream distro (possibly 3 or 4). Spend 20 to 30 minutes on each, showing the major differences (installs / apps handling / etc) and why they like it. Probably not a new idea. If it's been done of late then please disregard as I cannot make as many meetings as I once could. (This is due to my personal schedule not due to lack of interest.) Joel

Got it. "Ward, aren't you being a little hard on the beaver?" I don't believe I shared my personal Gentoo opinion. Instead I mused about a hilarious website and Gentoo's popularity growing and fading like a wave... Approx. 4 years ago I tried Gentoo once for a few days and discovered it wasn't for me. "Hi... My name is Joel and I'm a "Distro-XYZ" user." Sounds like a support group intro to me. No axe to grind, it is just my personal preference. I prefer not to drink instant coffee also, so I merely go elsewhere for my warm, slightly burnt, caffeinated goods. As always your mileage can and will vary... Actually I was mostly amused with the odd autos makes me want to do the following to 15+ year old Honda Civic showing lots of rust: put a rear wing with a half sheet of plywood held on with drywall screws Spray the home-made wing neon yellow spray can to not match the car (don't mask the car first) remove the exhaust with a sawzall at the headers (loud with real flames) leave a pair of custom exhaust pipe tips out the rear (leaving the labling of Folgers coffee). hood scoop made with a sawzall duct tape and a Cheerios box replace all the wheels with 4 "donut" spares. drive it up and down the street with a really bad car stereo blasting "Tom's Diner". Anyone have a spent, near end-of-life donor car in their driveway? Wow. I have never been to Gentoo is Rice before. That guy has some issues but I missed why he was so upset ;-) Was very entertained by the highly visually modified but still stock underpowered autos. Pics are a "People of Walmart" for the auto world. That Gentoo's install numbers are fading: everyone that wants it is upgrading as Jamie mentioned dying due to Ubuntu adoption/popularity from the article developers numbers dwindling from the article no longer the cool distro for techies or average users (we want to be cool too) some other reasons... or is it the end of it's technology "wave" IMHO, most technology comes and goes in 1 to 8 year waves. A technology wave example is the Slackware disto. Who else remembers running Slackware (back when it was rather cool)? Not sure I even know if they still release Slack anymore (I did just go there and yup they do). Three related waves which took longer admidedly were centralized processing and dumb terminals of the simpler good old days modern servers and intelligent desktops with processing power back to virtual machines (and thin clients which are really akin to fancy terminals) Joel
