Sometimes it only compiles for the currently running kernel. Are you running the old one outside of the chroot jail? When you are in the chroot jail, and run uname -a, what do you get? HI guys, I have a bunch of files in a chroot jail which are used to create my remastered Ubuntu CD with ham radio applications. I installed oss-linux from its .deb package downloaded directly from opensound.com. I did this because OSS worked with this package but not the packages in the Ubuntu repository. I have removed alsa, pulse audio, and any other non-OSS sound software I could find. The result works great for my needs (older computers and software insisting upon access to /dev/dsp). Now, here's the interesting issue. In that chroot jail, I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.38-11 to 2.6.38-12 via the Ubuntu repositories. Doing this somehow wiped out my installation of oss-linux-<ver>.deb, so I attempted to reinstall it via "dpkg -i oss-linux-<ver>.deb". The error that I received indicated that it wanted to see the kernel sources for 2.6.38-11 (the old kernel). I can't get it to look at the new kernel sources 2.6.38-12. There some crufty file laying around somewhere and I can't find it. I even tried "dpkg -r" (to remove it), and "dpkg --purge", both to no avail. Does anybody have any idea where I should look? Myth Box Resources and HD DVR Info?

Hi, I am re-working our TV to HDTV currently and trying to decide on a DVR. Currently I use Charter's DVR and not impressed with their DVR layout/features. Currently I am looking at either the DirectTV whole house DVR option or building a Myth DVR box(s). Not sure I want to bite off the Myth though due to needing 2 machines, tuner card, and chunks of my time (vs turnkey for an "appliance"). I have read the docs at MythTV website but am asking current Myth users: 1) Others are running for Myth hardware (front and back end specs) 2) Any estimates on install startup hours and monthly maintenance hours. 3) Any tips for a quick & smooth Myth install in late 2011 My current plans include a video source of HD via satellite from Dish or DirectTV and am leaning towards a Samsung 55" LCD/LED set. I got the impression around three years ago that Myth was a "techie time intensive" thing to setup and run. I could be all wet on that impression or it may have changed. Thank you, Joel

Originally I worked with SUNsparc work stations using Aurora. About 2003 I added Fedora Red Hat to a dual booted Windows machine. My two SUN's got reduced to one virtue of hardware issues. Then I turned it off. The Red Hat part of my big disk became sick in 2005. I've been Windows XP 2004 Professional ever since. Recently I rebuilt a Fedora machine and am appalled at how much I have forgotten.. Sigh...... Thanks, Ken

The problem with your attempts to help may be in that my Fedora is soooo old. It is Fedora 4. This second disk has/had? Fedora 6, but it never worked correctly. I have added a 160G hbd to my system. Drive cage recommendations?

Guys, I'm looking to add one or more of those 2x5.25" bay to 3x3.5" disk cages to my main file server, which is a CoolerMaster Centurion 534 case, which has tabs in between each 5.25" bay to help hold things in place. I thought about the 3x5.25 -> 4/5x3.5" expanders, but since I have four free 5.25" slots, it makes more sense to use a pair of 2x5.25"->3x3.5" cages. Plus most of the larger expanders won't work with tabs in the case. Part of my criteria is: cost, quiet cooling fan, durability of sleds, SATA III support, abitily to replace the cooling fan if it's too loud. So here's my top four choices. The IcyDock is the most expensive by far. Not sure I'd go for it... sorta leaning towards the iStarUSA models. Thanks for listening. Thanks for the sympathy. I had Fedora Core 4 on a machine with a powerless power supply. I added that 30G hard drive to the 150G on this machine and booted from it. Low and Behold. CUPS works. SAMBA works. Will wonders never cease... I even get to choose between GNOME and KDE. Ken

Evidently FEDORA CORE 6 CUPS predates my BROTHER HL-5340D black and white laser printer. Even though it does not include this BROTHER model in its list, CUPS claims it sees the printer and that it turned the printer on. The printer fails the test page. All my documentation is out of date. SAMBA does not work. So much for my LINUX Antique Road Show. I'm going to do a bit of computer hardware upgrading..

You actually don't want samba, that would help you serve printers. You want CUPS. Cups helpsyou serve and use printers. Rememberthe URL I sent you that started with archive? Have you tried that as a repo? I've got Fedora Core 6 Evolution working so I can cut and paste. I tried to use the "retrieve update information" tool. I think everything is WAY out of date. The update tool said. "Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: extras" I can't find one either. I have successfully installed Fedora 6 Core. I included 'programming' services. It said that it would install SAMBA. It did not. System Services mentions the need for xinetd. 'Locate' finds 'xinetd' but it does not seem to run. smbd and nmbd are nowhere to be found. Sigh..... My machine only has 256M ram memory. The higher numbered FEDORA packages ask for more ram. I want to burn a copy of fedora 15 32-bit on a CD but my installed fedora 15 64-bit isn't letting me. When I put in a blank CD it tells me it has 137.8 MB free and won't let me select that as a burn destination. It shouldn't be 137.8 MB free as a blank CD has more space. To get it working I decided to try burning to a DVD. Space seems correct there but again it doesn't allow burning.

SAMBA on Fedora 6??

Due to a series of incidents too complex to detail here, I have just rebuilt a desktop PC with Fedora 6. All seems fine except it does not contain SAMBA - at least I can not find the SAMBA executable on the 5 disc .iso CD set. It has been at least five years. I do not remember it being difficult back then..... I have gone to various places on the WEB that claim to have appropriate SAMBA versions only to discover they have been taken down. I tried the SAMBA in my FEDORA Linux 3 Bible DVD. (Many dependencies missing....) I tried the SAMBA in my SAMBA Black Book CD. I got no where. It's been soooo long. I like Fedora. Must I now go to Ubuntu? Ken Jones
