The 3rd annual Northeast Linux Fest

Hello, I would like to annouce the 3rd annual Northeast Linux Fest. It will be on March 16 and 17 at Harvard University in the Science building. If you are new to Linux or a seasoned veteran this is the place for you. We will have speakers from Red Hat teaching you how to leverage virtualization using Openshift and KVM. The Fedora distribution will have their own track giving talks on all things Fedora. John Sullivan from the Free Software Foundation will be there also. Jon 'Maddog" Hall who has been there from the start of it all will be giving the keynote. We also will have an all day class for new Linux users. Idea for next month's WLUG meeting....

Over pizza last night I had a WLUG meeting idea I thought I would share with the group. Seems many WLUG members have Android phones and tablets. How about a show & tell about each of our favorite Android applications? Android is Linux-based so it is somewhat relevent to our group. I am not sure how we can "show these" up on a big screen but a laptop could easily go to the web page (or developer's page) via browser might work. I am happy to contribute my 5 to 10 favorites in the Android App world. Sharing these in this e-mail group might make sense also if people so choose. Anyone else have thoughts on this topic? Hi folks, The next Worcester Linux Users' Group (WLUG) meeting will be held at its regularly scheduled time: the 2nd Wednesday of the month, which is tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13, at 7PM. The location will be the WPI Campus Center, Mid-Centry Room 331, which should hopefully become our regular location. If people would like, I can bring my new Raspberry Pi to play with. I might even have a case for it by then. I have installed a distro called OpenELEC which is an XBMC port, but we can play with other distros as well, especially if people bring some spare SD cards they don't mind erasing. Overriding NIS accounts

I have an issue at my work with the configuration of one of our several flavors of linux servers. The goal is to override the NIS-specified login directory definition by using this syntax in /etc/passwd: +userx:::::/home/userx: +@grpx:::::: +:::::: /etc/nsswitch.conf has (in part): passwd: compat shadow: files nis group: files nis The distribution is Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.2 (Tikanga). If this was working I would get the following: > echo ~userx /home/userx Instead, I'm getting the login dir specified in NIS. I've successfully configured a Red Hat 6.3 server to work properly, but this one is driving me batty. Any suggestions? TIA, Bill

Possible intrusion?

I was looking at the output of "last" recently and found several entries like this on my home server: userxx pts/0 c-24-91-141-172. Sun Dec 2 14:57 - 15:09 (00:11) (userxx represents my username) I did a reverse lookup on 172.141.92.24: host 172.141.92.24 24.92.141.172.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer AC8D5C18.ipt.aol.com. Looks like something from AOL. I got a little freaked, so I changed my password and also blocked that IP in /etc/hosts.deny. I'm not an aol user, but my wife is... but the "last" output shows this as connecting with my username. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill

I don't think it is a question of Facebook or a website. Maybe the title of my email gave that impression. We can use both. Use Facebook for what it is good for (if that is anything), and use the web site for what it is good for. Creating events and managing RSVP might be something to leave to Facebook. Although, if we used one of the CMS software systems, it could probably do that job. For instance, I use my personal Facebook site only to have links to my blog articles on my web site. I agree, that I want to own the data on my blog. All my photo albums are on my own website. On the Facebook create group page there is an option to set privacy to: Privacy: Open Anyone can see the group, who's in it, and what members post. Actually, I suppose that may already be the setting. https://www.facebook.com/SturbridgeForElizabethWarren does not require a login to Facebook. Facebook presents you with a login page, but you can just dismiss the login page to read the original. This is not true of https://www.facebook.com/groups/worcester.linux.users.group/ If the owner of https://www.facebook.com/groups/worcester.linux.users.group/ could open up access to this page so that you do not need to log in to read it, then this would be a great step forward. This facebook page ought to be mentioned on the web site. http://www.wlug.org/. Examples of Websites Using Different Techniques

I have examples of three different techniques that I have used for creating web sites. My personal web site is mostly hand coded HTML and CSS, with some custom Javascript and PHP. The drop down menus are pure HTML and CSS. http://www.ssgreenberg.name/ The politics link on my website takes you to my politics blog that uses Wordpress. http://ssgreenberg.name/PoliticsBlog/ I have my experimental website using Drupal 6. http://www.ssgreenberg.name/Drupal/Drupal/ the last example is the Friends of The Joshua Hyde Public Library on which I have used Drupal 7 http://www.sturbridgelibraryfriends.org/ I did a much more complex web site in Drupal 6 for a Square dance club, but that site is no longer available. I'll be happy to discuss the pros and cons of each technique. /Steve P.S.
