Folks, My grandson wants to host a minecraft server party for his boy scout troop and my daughter and I are wondering how to ensure that the existing machines on her home network are not compromised given that the members of the troop will be bringing their own machinesand ethernet switchesalthough some may be running wireless. I was wondering if you could give us some thoughts on how to set up the network. It is my understanding that the minecraft clients do need to get out to the internet to obtain a valid player name. I had thought ofsetting up a seperate Router/Lan for the party, disconnecting the existing router/lan from the wan and connecting the minecraft router/lan to the wan for the duration of the party. Any thoughts out there? -David

ls character range wildcard oddity?

Can someone explain this to my evidently inadequately caffeinated brain? I was trying to use a lower case character range wildcard to list all files not starting with an uppercase letter and I noticed it wasn't working as I'd expect. So I created this simple example and still don't understand what's happening. Dir with two files: brett@spider /tmp/test $ \ls apple Berry This is what I'd expect to see: brett@spider /tmp/test $ \ls [a-b]* apple This makes no sense. The next WLUG meeting is June 11th, 2015. @ 7pm. NOTE: THE MEETING WILL BE IN THE CAMPUS CENTER RM 129 aka "Chairman's Room" I will be speaking about native ZFS on linux. I'll go into the structure of ZFS and its design principles, and how it's used in production. I'll then do a demo showing off what ZFS can do and I'll create a bunch of different FS types, etc. It should be a blast. Like usual there will be refreshments available. ZFS is a logical volume manager (LVM), raid subsystem and a file system combined. I'll be doing a deep dive on how ZFS works on linux, it's strengths and weaknesses. Agreed, great meeting. I learned several things from Frank's talk, I had no idea about the "hot plate" and temperature issues. And it was cool to see Jeff's machine in action, despite the hiccups. Beaglebone Black

Hi Everybody, I would like to know if any proprietary binary blobs are required to use a Beaglebone Black. According to my findings, the Raspberry Pi has a proprietary binary blob involved with booting the machine, and also controlling the video. It wasn't so easy to find this information. I would prefer to use such a board with no proprietary software. That's why I'm considering the Beaglebone Black. Does anybody know the definitive answer? I've searched a lot of websites to no avail. ZFS on Linux vs. BTRFS or stick with EXT4?

I'm migrating to new large drives and would lke to take advantage of a filesystem that has integrated data and metadata checksums. How well does ZFS on Linux really work? What is the current status of BTRFS? Which one would you trust your precious data to? I've been out of the loop lately... This would be a great meeting topic! "How to set up ZFS on Linux and/or BTRFS". Any takers?

Hey Gang, A couple things... 1. Speakers. As of right now I don't have any speakers lined up. If anybody wants to speak about something, or would like to suggest a topic they'd be interested in hearing spoke about let me know and I'll work on getting it set up. As for topics that I'm interested in... 3d printing! I know that WPI has a printer (that's running on a Pi even!) What OSS is out there to do modeling, etc? 2.
