by Tim Keller Oct. 6, 2016

Oct. 6, 2016

Hey Gang, Long time member Richard Goodman has graciously offered to host the annual WLUG party at his house. This year instead of BBQ, we're going to do pizza. Date: October 13th, 2016 Time: 6:00 PM Location: 51 Valley Hill Drive, Worcester MA Weather permitting we might even be outside! Feel free to bring soda and other beverages, chip & dips, salad, desserts, etc. Dick will provide the main courses to keep it all kosher. Thanks, Tim. -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

Thank you for the post. I'm still here as a Wlug member. When is the next meeting? Perhaps we can have a meeting about the present dark hacks and malware. Meanwhile, I'm touring the new Linux Mint 18 and find it fresh and very stable but limited in some areas. I think they will add things to upgrades and updates. Again, thank you.

Tim, The meeting announcement I sent to the IEEE members (see below) included the wrong room number. I cannot notify them before the meeting of the typo that was in the announcement. Tomorrow I will be in Boston all day at a VMware vForum conference that ends at 4-5 o'clock and can't be sure I will get to WPI before 7pm. Is there some way you can put up some signage on Washburn doors indicating the correct room number? I don't know how many, or if, any IEEE members will attend but the meeting's topic should be of interest to some of them. Thanks, Al ------------------------ IEEE Meeting Announcement: Container Technologies When: Thursday, September 15th, 2016 Time: 7 to 9 pm Where: WPI, Washburn Labs, Room 232 This Worcester County Section Computer Society Chapter and the Worcester Linux User Group (WLUG) joint meeting will introduce and discuss software container technologies. The presentation will introduce and consider application containerization and container orchestration including some comparisons between current platforms (Docker, etc). Over the past couple of years container technologies have become an increasingly popular and important virtualization alternative. Consequently, software developers involved with web based and mobile application development, and "microservices" in general, are being expected to understand container technologies, and how to containerize their applications and manage a containerized environment. By packaging microservices in containers the applications can, if required, be portable across all the physical, virtual, and cloud environments, increasing agility and efficiency, and greatly accelerate time to market. The meeting's presentation, by William Temple, will consider, with an emphasis on the Docker/OCI and the Kubernetes orchestration stack: - Containers 101: Introduction & Motivations - Container Technologies -- Docker -- Open Containers Initiative -- LXC, rkt, and others - Container Implementation -- namespaces -- cgroups -- security implications, comparison to Virtual Machines - Containers in Production (Kubernetes, etc.) - Containers in Consumer Environments (Flatpak, Snappy, etc.) The meeting presenter is William Temple, a Senior Computer Science major at WPI who has spent the last two summers working on container technologies at Red Hat under the Project Atomic/OpenShift banners. The meeting will be held on the WPI campus in Washburn Labs, Room 232. The meeting will start at 7:00 PM and should end by 9:00. Reservations are not required. For last minute meeting information check the WLUG web site: http://www.wlug.org If you are not familiar with the WPI campus, a map is at http://www.wpi.edu/about/visitors/campusmap.html After the meeting, attendees usually go out for pizza. WLUG Meeting Sept. 15th, 2016 @ 7PM Topic: Docker Location: Washburn Labs Rm 323
by Tim Keller Sept. 14, 2016

Sept. 14, 2016

Hey Everybody! We have a WLUG meeting on Sept. 15th at 7PM! Here are the vitals: Location: Washburn Labs Rm *323* @7pm (NOTE room 323 not 232!) Speaker: William Temple Topic: Container technologies... The speaker for this meeting is William Temple. Here's what he recently posted to the list (if you didn't already see it) Thanks for inviting me to give a talk on containers this Thursday. I'm a Senior at WPI and spent the last two summers working on container technologies at Red Hat under the Project Atomic/OpenShift banners. If you all are interested, topics for discussion could be: - Containers 101: Introduction & Motivations - Container Technologies -- docker -- Open Containers Initiative -- LXC, rkt, and others - Container Implementation -- namespaces -- cgroups -- security implications, comparison to Virtual Machines - Containers in Production (Kubernetes, etc.) - Containers in Consumer Environments (Flatpak, Snappy, etc.) If there are any other container-related topics you'd like to hear about, please just let me know and I can work them in. I'm mostly familiar with the Docker/OCI & Kubernetes orchestration stack, so I won't be able to go into technical details about other systems, but can give an overview if someone else wants to get into the weeds about any other container systems. I'd like to thank Logan for getting this organized and for William for being accomidating of our location and schedule change. As always, there will be refreshments and snacks and we'll head to Tech Pizza afterwards! See ya there! -- I am leery of the allegiances of any politician who refers to their constituents as "consumers".

As always, there will be refreshments and snacks and we'll head to Tech Pizza afterwards! See ya there! He said it's Thursday Sept 15th!!!! (see Subject:) I assume it 7:00pm, since the whole point of changing the date was because we didn't want to change the time. I thought you must be behind in reading, but now see that the location was not specified. No doubt that will be determined shortly. There seem to be a several WLUG people who know a lot about this, but there are also those of us who first heard of it a few weeks ago. Please don't let it turn into an insider discussion of marketing buzzwords. (1) What goes into a container? (2) What can I now do with a full container that Kernighan and Ritchie couldn't do in 1976 with a Unix process? (3) etc. -- Keith

Tim, Let me know as soon as you determine the time and location and I will send a meeting announcement to the IEEE Worcester Section. I suspect Friday is the latest that I can receive the information and still get a message sent out in time for the meeting. by Tim Keller Sept. 6, 2016

Hey Gang, WPI's scheduling software decided that 8:30pm was close enough to 7pm... We're going to move the meeting to the 15th, so we can have a) a better choice of meeting rooms b) a more acceptable meeting time!! The topic is still going to be Docker, only now a week later! I'm still confirming with Will, but I figure it's better to get this out now then wait. Sorry for all the confusion. Hello WLUG! Thanks for inviting me to give a talk on containers this Thursday. BTW, I see an earlier offer from Logan that his roommate William Temple might give a talk on containers. I'd personally be interested in that, particularly if it gets into LXC or, say, the oft-underlying technology of cgroups. --Chris On 09/05/2016 05:55 PM, Christopher Thompson wrote: > Hi All! > > Been a good while since I've been able to come along, but I have a > possible opportunity to ride along there with a new friend. I'm hearing a consensus for pushing the BBQ off till Sept. or Oct... Which means we're still going to have a meeting this Thursday! We've got room 129 in the campus center reserved. I'll put out a legitimate announcement. Thanks, Tim. On Mon, Aug 15, 2016 at 11:19 AM, Jon "maddog" Hall < jon.maddog.hall(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Hi, > > I think a fall BBQ is a good idea.
