Firewalls

After spending many hours this past week trying to understand ipchains and firewalling in general I have come to the conclusion that I am spending a lot of time trying to recreate something that probably already exists. Does anyone have any experience with either open source or commercial firewalling products that can be configured to work in a small office network and allow VPN connections to larger networks. I do not have a very big budget but would be willing to pay for the appropriate solution. Mike

Startup issues

I have been playing with my network settings today and have made a change that has caused my system to be unable to read this file during boot up. Also any script that tries to read from it is unable to. Unfortunately I have no idea what I did to cause this. The following is the out put from 'ls -l' -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 235 Jan 30 19:59/ etc/rc.config.d/idedma.rc.config I am running SuSE 7.0. Thanks, mike

Problems

I have Slackware 7.1 running on a an AMD 133Mhz box with 32Megs RAM. This is my webserver, shell server, Ip MASQ box, and it locks up alot. It seems to lock up when I'm downloading on a box in my network behind it. I am runnign Kernel 2.4.0 on an ADSL line. I have had this problem with all kernel compiles I have done. I used to run FreeBSD, then OpenBSD on this box with no trouble. I did not, however, have ADSL then, so those boxes were just using a dial-up. I think IP MASQ is lockign the box up at some point. There are no messages in /var/log/messages, it just stops cold. My PPPOE client, when running top, never appears to use more than 10% of my CPU. I do not think the problem is in the pppoe client because the box does not seem to lock up when I'm downloading on it. (as in ssh'ing in and using lynx). Does anyone have any ideas on this? Orbitz

After the presentation, if time allows, we'll open the floor for a general question and answer session. Hi, I am having a problem setting the date/time on my Linux box. I set it using date 030310152001 for 3/3/2001 10:15. Everyting seems fine until I reboot the box. At that time it changes to some other time. I checked my CMOS and the time is correct. What am I doing wrong? thanx for your help. Peter N.

Network problem: mine or theirs?

Hi all, I have a problem accessing the Internet. On precisely every other attempt, I get failures. For example, every other unique URL I click in Netscape gives me the following error: A network error occurred while Netscape was receiving data. (Network error: connection reset by peer) Try connecting again. I suspect that my network provider's DNS server is having problems. Since I'm a DHCP client of AT&T Broadband, I tried removing all but one of the nameserver lines in the /etc/resolv.conf file to see if one of them was flaky. After trying all 3 provided nameservers uniquely, either this isn't the problem, or they're all flaky. Any thoughts? PPPD 2.3.11 on kernel 2.4.1

I've got kernel 2.4.1 up and running and am pleased that all seems to be relatively well. My boss has an iMac at home and dials in via a ppp connection to one of my linux boxes running now 2.4.1. I've played with various ppp options and have removed just about everything from the /etc/ppp/options file. ssh

Hi, When i pop my mail i create a tunnel through ssh, and pop through that. Using this command "ssh -C -f me(a)pop.myserver -L 10110:pop.myserver:110 sleep 30" Well every time i create the tunnel i have to enter my password for the pop server. Is there a way to use ssh tools so i don't have to enter my password? I'm using kmail is that's relevant. Thanks, --Brad

Hey, thanks alot all of you who went to http://orbitz.dyn.dhs.org/test.php. For those of you wondering why the heck I'd ask a such a thing, here is an explination. A friend of mine got a cool (but I'm assuming not very new idea) for passive OS detection through version strings on network software, in this case web browsers. What the php script does is log all of your version (User-Agent header) strings to a file, then by doing some greps and sort I create a wonderful list of all the strings. Then I use a perl script i made to convert the version strings to snort (www.snort.org) rule sets. So now when people visit http://orbitz.dyn.dhs.org/ and they are using a web browser in my data base, I can log what OS, web browser, and whatelse is in the header. So the bigger the database, the more people I can pick up. Its a pretty cool idea I think. There are other ways (probably simpler and more efficient) of doing this. Such as possible an apache mod. Are you positive that the problem is memory and not CPU? Most decoding of audit and video is very cpu intensive. If the audio/video app gets swapped out (of the cpu), you can notice choppiness in quality.
