All right, Thank you for the assistance all. It has been helpful. I took Andy & Jeff's lead to check the Kernel and sure enough there is no such device. Is my best bet to try to load a newer version? I am less afraid of this prospect after fighting my way through X problems in 6.0 before going to 7.1. Any words to the wise before embarking on this adventure? Up until now I have used off the shelf disks to get the job done. How much more treacherous is trying to grab stuff on-line? Lp0 issues

I have been making myself at home in KDE 1.1.2 under Linux 2.2.15-4mdk and have managed to slowly get most functionality off of the old Windows half of the dual boot drive. There is one major impediment to moving over entirely: I cannot print. I have an Epson Stylus Color 660, and can not make it work, reconfigure and test as I try. If I am not mistaken the system is using a ghostwriter filter that generically addresses Epson Stylus Color printers (I have tried all sorts of earlier drivers and generic options within this.) When you go to the setup and configuration there is no auto detect of the printer and type, You must manually chose it, and when you try any form of a test print you get: "Waiting for lp0 to become ready (offline?)" If you try to test print from RHLinux Print System Manager ASCII directly you get: "Couldn't write file "dev/lp0": no such device" When I try to print from an app. I get: "lpr: lp: lp: unknown printer" If you can spare a few seconds I would be thoroughly grateful for your thoughts.

That'll probably be really tough, since it won't even boot for the first time... What you could try is using a boot diskette to get the machine up and running, then compile a custom kernel that has support for the scsi card compiled in (not as a module) The kernel that the installer uses has -everything- compiled in so it'll work on a maximum number of systems, however, the kernel it installs on your machine does not. ipchains flush

I'm running three dual-homed RedHat 7.0 boxes on separate DSL or cable, each doing IP Masquerading to private networks. I'm attempting to do some more serious firewalling, and am trying to debug problems in a rc.firewall script generated from Bob Ziegler's site. I've noticed that when I swap between Bob's 600+ line script and Rusty's Three-Line Guide to Masquerading (IPCHAINS How-To) , each modified to start with "ipchains -F" which should flush all existing rules, that the flush isn't happening. I'm switching by doing "sh <scriptname>" after having made both scripts executable. If I reboot Linux after changing which script is referenced in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, then everything is clean. Ximian Gnome on Debian

Just in case anyone here uses Debian and is thinking of installing Ximian1.4, the directions that say to apt-get install task-helix-gnome are wrong. I've gone and made some task packages based on what helix/ximian used to have for its previous release. SCSI HD Boot Failure! BLA!

Hello again all, I've just recently started putting together a Mandrake 8.0 box. (About 3 hours ago, yes in the middle of the night.) For a hard drive, I have an IBM SCSI Drive on an Adaptec 2940-U2 card. When I ran the install, it found the card and the drive automagically. I was impressed and happy. Went through the installation fine, copied all the files. But as soon as I rebooted to run it for the first time, I get the LILO graphical screen, I choose one of the options (any), and get the following error... request_module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted VFS: Cannot open root device "801" or 08:01 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01 Just some more information. The HD is on SCSI ID #6. The controller is on #7. The SCSI BIOS sees the drive because I can see it report it on boot. When I watch the boot messages fly by for Linux, I see no reference to any sd# devices at all. I'm really completely lost here. Would changing the SCSI ID # help? That doesn't seem to be likely. Are people still thinking about this?? On an unrelated note, Loki's online store is down and Tribes 2 is shipping NOW. kde problem

Hi all I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook running SuSE 7.0 (personal edition) with kde as the window manager. For reasons unknown (to me at least) I can no longer click on an icon, for example, the shell icon, on the Kpanel and get a response. Also, the icons on the desktop, netscape and soffice, for example, have disappeared. Finally, if I click on the K menu button I can navigate out to the various programs, but again nothing responds. I can however, hit Alt/F2, get a command window, type in netscape, xterm or soffice, and the respective application comes up! I have searched the web and found no hints as to what might be going on. I happen to have the Que "Practical KDE" by Dennis Powell where, on page 46, under "Troubleshooting" there is a section "KDE starts but Applications won't". He suggests a chmod 1777 /tmp which I tried (and got drwxrwxrwt which says I didn't hit a typo) but the problem remained. I also tried chmod -RV 1777 /tmp to recursively chmod (I found several subdirectories in /tmp) but again without success. :-( The KDE version is 1.1.2 according to the SuSE box. The kernel is 2.2.12 (but, that, I suspect, is irrelevant). So, my specific question is "has anyone out there seen this and/or knows the solution/fix?". If not, a broader question is "what would you try next?" (without blowing away everything and reinstalling linux :-) --- this same SuSE/KDE works fine on a Dell desktop box). As you might gather, I have reached the point where I am open to suggestions of any kind :-) doug

Cable modem/lilo

The version of SUSE linux I was running seemed to give me a problem with DHCP. Ive yet to figure out what it is, and cable modems should be simple to setup. Anyways I installed mandrake 8.0 beta 3. The installation utility is great. I booted in the system for the first time and was able to use my modem. Thanx for the reccomendation. I was wondering if anyone can help me with lilo. When I boot my machine it only displays LI. I seem to remember this having to do something with the drive geometry. Any Ideas? I also installed grub which when I boot just displays GRUB. Need input re: developers tools

HI gang, I am starting to write up the last 1/3 of my presentation to the Delphi Developers group, and its the section on developer tools and utilities. I'd like some input from you folks as to what I should include in this section. Emacs - the original "IDE" (???) gdb for debugging (nicer with DDD front end, IMHO) make and Makefiles gcc What else do "real" Linux developers use? Maybe I'm suffering a brain cramp this evening, but your input will help. Also, are there any tools or compilers for Pascal? Remember, the Delphi folks understand Pascal, and I'm sure they will ask this question. (It has been 20 years since I programmed anything in Pascal...). Even with 64GB of RAM, no single process can see more than 4GB and the top 1GB of that is mapped as kernel space. Big memory means that you get to have lots of large virtual address spaces that can remain mapped in physical RAM. Nope, the new kernel will work with 64gb, you just have to go under "Processor type and features" and change the settings for High Memory Support. LRP 3.1.0. You need to browse the various kernel images at www.linuxrouter.org to find the one that most closely matches your environment. You'll probably want an image that has a pppoe (if you're using Verizon DSL), ipchains, DHCP, caching DNS, etc. You can download it along with the modules for your ethernet cards. Since this is a router, you'll need at least 2 ethernet cards; one for the "WAN" side (DSL connection) and one for your local (LAN) network. I use my LRP box as a gateway/router and a firewall (running ipchains). My Verizon DSL "modem" is connected to the LRP box via one of the ethernet cards and the other ethernet card in the LRP box is connected to a hub in my house. All of the PCs in the house are also connected to the hub. I configured a private class C ethernet network in my house and all the PC's have a 192.168.x.y address, including the LAN interface of the LRP box. The WAN side gets it IP address from Verizon via DHCP. These addresses get "spoofed" via IPMASQ to the outside world. The whole set-up works great. You can get other modules to load from the floppy, but remember everything has to fit on a floppy. One neat trick is the ability to format a floppy to hold more than 1.4 MB. I don't recall if it's the fdformat command or something else (I'm sure someone on this list can supply the details.....it's been a while, and I don't remember), but you can format a floppy so it will hold 1.6 MB (maybe more) and Linux has no trouble booting from it. The neat thing is that you can use an old "clunker" PC that you may have lying around for the LRP box. You don't even need a hard drive, and it's recommended that you DON'T use a hard drive (secruity reasons...remember this box is exposed to the outside world). I don't even have a monitor or keyboard connected to the LRP box. It just runs and runs and runs.... Step through the LRP configuration, write-protect the floppy, and you're in business....
