ssh-dummy-shell for OpenSSH???

I'm setting up a test environment using OpenSSH built in sFTP server. What I want to-do is build a chroot environment where people can connect to the machine via sFTP but not via SSH. I know with the commercial version of SSH they have ssh-dummy-shell which when you try to connect via SSH just bails on you, but lets sFTP work properly. I've done some digging on the web and I haven't found anything that'll replace this functionality on the OpenSSH side of things. Anybody got any ideas/links of an open source version of ssh-dummy-shell. Thanks, Tim.

BBC cd

Hi all A few meeting back, Andy gave out some BBC-Linux cd's. I decided to try one and got hung up. Basically everything went well until I got to the stage of downloading stuff from the net (the network card set-up worked fine). The download hung. It defaulted to the address 64.81.65.8 for zork.net where the stuff was supposed to be. I suspected that zork.net had moved so I went to another box and went to it via netscape. It came up ok (the directory structure was slightly different but the files were there). The problem is that the BBC script needs a dotted quad, not a zork.net. So the problem is to find out the dotted quad for zork.net. I tried ping zork.net and it pinged 66.92.188.166. I then went there and got crackmonkey.org. I tried pinging crackmonkey.org and got that same 66.92.188.166 I got pinging zork.net ! arp zork.net and crackmonkey.org also gives that same common dotted quad. Ping of the BBC default address 64.81.65.8 gives nothing. Unlike Netscape, Konquerer will take dotted quads. The 66.92.188.166 comes up crackmonkey.org consistent with the preceding while 64.81.65.8 gives the error message "could not connect to host 64.81.65.8". My question, then, is how does one get a dotted quad for zork.net? A related question is whether anyone tried/succeeded loading Debian starting with that BBC-linux cd? i.e. can it be done? (The README-DEBIAN on the cd gives alternative sites but none of them has the -bbc versions of the image and tarball the install script is looking for. I admit to not wanting to go down the path of redoing the install scripts :-( ) This email sure did not please the spell-checker! :-) doug

I had some questions about apache. I am running apache on my dorm computer which is a win 98 and I started getting some strange log's. Sorry about it being so long but the stuff that scares is near the bottom. Could you also help me make it so users have to enter a password and username to acess certain sections of the site. FS: Various EISA cards

They're old, and if noone buys them, I'm just going to toss them. Last I knew all these cards were working properly. I have no drivers, .cfgs, manuals, or cables with them... however I found all of these very easily on the web. I'm making a push to eliminate all my EISA equipment. 5 bucks a card, any card, OBO. All sales final. No returns or refunds, I want this stuff gone. Make sure this stuff runs on the platform your going to run before buying. I ran most of them either under x386 Linux 2.2.x, Alpha OpenVMS, or Alpha Digital UNIX. You need to tell apache that index.php is a page to load as a 'DirectoryIndex'. In your httpd.conf file (mine is in /etc/httpd/conf on RHL 7.1) append index.php to the line that loooks like this: DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.shtml {.... maybe more things} so it should now read: DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.shtml index.php (BTW, you can define other filenames to be handled in this way.) I'm currently trying to set up Apache and PHP4 under Debian woody. So far, I have Apache and php4 up and running (using apt-get retrieved binaries.) I can load php pages w/o problems, provided I specify the file directly. That is, the following URL will work: http://my.domain/some_dir/index.php but loading the following: http://my.domain/some_dir/ will result in Mozilla (0.9.5) giving me a download dialog box telling me: "You have chosen to download a file of type: application/x-httpd-php", which is followed by a choice to either pick a helper app or to save to disk. Chuck Anderson demo'd a PS-RISC system running Debian Linux. I have a similar system that I am offering up for sale. Its an HP 9000 model J210 than has: -2 PA-RISC 120mhz processors -1 gig of memory -2 four gig HVD SCSI drives -SCSI CD-ROM -An extra 10/100 ethernet NIC card(there is already one built in) -VGA adapter(although as Chuck pointed out, the display card isn't supported yet under Linux) -an external HVD SCSI interface as well as an external SCSI-2 interface It all works and currently has a version of HP-UX 11 that I need to wipe before selling it. As stated before, there is a working Linux kernel for it and it would make a great server or at the very least, a great hobby system. $250 or best offer Reply if your interested. Folks, Saturday, Andy sent out a note from Rob Belleville asking for help in getting Linux running on some 20-30 Macs. I've looked at the proposal, and Rob's proposal to setup a terminal server is pretty much impossible, as the PROM code for doing remote boot is restricted to the Intel platform. So, the counter proposal is to install the kernel on each box, and use NFS to mount most of the "stuff" needed on the client. This shouldn't be too hard, since all Rob wants to do is print and run a web browser from the clients. (Rob wants the clients to come up with autologon and possibly just start the web browser as well.) I could use some help with setting up the (Intel) server: DHCP, Cups or LPR or ..., NFS and getting the directories mounted on the clients at boot time. If someone would be willing lend a hand with this, please let me know. Another idea: If someone wants to do the server, I'll help out with getting the Macs running. --Skip

1. Thanks to the hints from this group, I was able to get the ALSA sound driver modules installed on my RedHat 7.1 box. (The subwoofer sounds great.) Now, since I'm a newbie WRT adding modules, I don't know the _right_ way to get them to load at boot. Right now, I just added some modprobe lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local, but I suspect that's not right. (I did add some options lines to /etc/modules.conf, but since the syntax is unfamiliar to me, I did not see a way to actually load the module -- perhaps insmod?) So, what's the right way to load a module at boot? 2. What's the best place to get started to be able to receive web radio broadcasts? I haven't found anything very helpful in the RH distro. Maybe I'm not looking for the right thing? TIA, Bill

He has a bunch of old PowerMac 6100s and was wondering if it made sense to convert them to work as thin Linux clients (similar to the Linux terminal server project (ltsp.org)) If somebody would like to take a crack at doing this for a couple of these PowerMacs as a proof of concept, give Rob a shout at rb(a)millbury.net. I'd hate to throw away all these Macs when they could be used somewhere within the district. They are 66 MHz / 40 MB RAM / 600 MB HD with NICs. The only problem at the moment is that timing is critical. They are being stored and need to be removed in the next month. I can let a few of them go to someone who wanted to work on them at home. I'd like to be able to have them be at the very minimum an Internet terminal and maybe run StarOffice or something similar. Let me know your thoughts. Like I said, this project could be done outside of the school and then come back to clone the remaining Macs after they were tested. I would be willing to give a few of them to someone as compensation. I'm still in a hectic school-construction mode so my participation will be limited to a minimum but I would be happy to deliver the Macs to anyone who was willing to give it a go. Also, it would be a good thing to write up for the LTSP.org website as they don't have much in the way of using Macs as thin clients. General firewall question

Hey folks... I'm currently running Apache on Win2K to serve a small personal webpage through my static IP assigned by my DSL provider. The machine is a "test" server but I'd like to secure it a little more. I've got a spare box sitting around that I'd like to use as a firewall/router, specifically with something like Coyote Linux/the LRP distros. I'm wondering if it's possible to use the DHCP features in such a firewall setup to pass the HTTP requests (router with static IP, server with a 192.168.x.x type IP) to the Win2K box AND limit the connections only to HTTP port 80 on the Win2K box. Next step would be a Win2K mailserver... Does this make sense or would a pure Linux server/IPtables type setup be easier? NFS? problem

I have two linux boxes that have nfs-mounted a file system from a DG/UX server. One of them cannot read the directories properly. Here's a short Perl script: **************************************************************** #!/usr/bin/perl opendir(DIR, $ARGV[0]) or die; @files = readdir(DIR); print(join("\n", @files, '')); exit(0); **************************************************************** On server A: % uname -a Linux A 2.4.16 #1 SMP Fri Dec 14 15:31:54 EST 2001 i686 unknown On server B: % uname -a Linux B 2.4.2-2 #1 Sun Apr 8 20:41:30 EDT 2001 i686 unknown B is running the standard RedHat 7.1 kernel, while server A has been upgraded. On B, when I run the test script, supplying the name of an NFS directory (on the DG/UX server), I get the "right stuff" -- a good directory listing. On A, the same operation gives me nothing. No failure or anything. The script works find on local disks and on disks NFS mounted from a Sun server. The A server also has the reiserfs installed on an unrelated drive. The symptom is not limited to perl scripts. I get strange behavior from tcsh, too. Any ideas? Thanks, Bill

Hi everybody, This is a friendly reminder about the upcoming WLUG meeting, to be held on Wednesday, January 16th, 2002, on the WPI campus in Worcester, MA. For this meeting, please note that we will be in a **DIFFERENT LOCATION**. The meeting will be in Perreault Hall in a building called Fuller Labs (yes, still on the WPI campus). To get directions, click the yellow "WLUG meetings" picture on the top of the WLUG website, and then click "directions". It is in the building next to the Gordon Library. Taking place at this meeting will be the greatly anticipated "Linux Distribution Bakeoff". Representing several different distributions will be: Doug Waud - SuSE 7.2 Tim Keller - Mandrake 8.1 Adam Keck - Debian (Stable) This meeting is being held to discuss distribution specific features. The aforementioned folks profess some level of expertise with their particular distribution and will extol us with the virtues of same. I'm sure it'll be a fun and informative meeting. (Should I have been in sales instead of engineering?! Nah, nobody would buy anything from a long haired guy in a suit...). At this meeting we will also discuss the upcoming WLUG Install Fest, to be held on Saturday, February 9th, 2002 at Stratus Computer in Maynard, MA. This will be our third annual install fest at this location, and each has been well attended in the past by both installees and WLUG members. If you are interested in attending, please send e-mail to Tim Keller (tim.keller(a)stratus.com) Lurkers and voyeurs are also welcome to watch and learn. Be sure to tell your non-Linux friends! Hi I was following the WLUG flow of messages with regard to offering/needing equipment when I went on to the next message and did a double-take when the first line came up as "We are in need of a vibratome for sectioning pre-fixed brain tissue," Then I realized the flow of WLUG stuff had stopped and I was now getting stuff from a medical list :-) I guess it's just one of those hazards of having a foot in two dissimilar camps! doug

No power supply 4) Compaq 286 Laptop ... It works! 5) Super Nintendo (controllers, games, etc) 6) Pentium 233 + motherboard I'll bring all of it to the meeting, if you want something email me.
