As Andy suggested, Anyone have ideas? Like to see something presented? Anyone done much with LDAP servers? Authentication? Network security? iptables? One thing i would like to know. I currently have an iptables FW setup with logging of all rejected packets. Something similar to LogWatch that summarizes the rejected packets would be nice. Does anybody know of or created a script that can change a users password without human intervention? or on a side note, does anybody know how to in perl hash a textual password into a MD5 hash that would be suitable to be inserted into a shadow file. Thanks, Tim.

DDS3 tape drive?

Hey guys - I've got an old backup tape from 1999 that I'd like to get the data off of. My big problem - I don't have the old system/tape drive around anymore, or personally have anything that can handle the tape. (The DDS2 tape drive I tried just spit the tape back out at me.) The tape is a DDS-3 Data Cartridge (Compressed Capacity 24 GB), an HP C5708A. I do not know how much data is on the tape (or if it's been corrupted), but I doubt that it's anywhere near the 24GB. All I really need is a data dump (to either a CD-R or such that I can FTP off to my server), and I'll poke through it later. I really can't spare the $680 (the cheapest data recovery quote I've gotten) for a possibly corrupted tape... any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. 8) -- --==*==-- --==*==-- Michelle R. Hi Everybody, This e-mail is to remind you about the upcoming WLUG meeting which is being held on Thursday, June 13th at 7:00 PM in Kinnicutt Hall on the WPI Campus in Worcester, MA, USA. With the arrival of my new daughter two weeks ago (May 24), it has been very busy at my house. Combined with some unrestful evenings, I have not had any time to prepare a presentation for this meeting. The floor is open for anybody who has a reasonable presentation to make to the group. Please contact me to make arrangements. As you've seen in the past, the presentation need not be extremely fancy. Feedback I've received from group members indicates that these presentations are well received, and are certainly better alternatives to sitting around for an hour trying to figure out what to discuss. :-) Recent Linux developments that might be fodder for discussion are KDE 3.0.x, United Linux, aptget-rpm, Mozilla 1.0, OpenOffice.org 1.0, and probably many other things. At this meeting, we can also attempt to finalize our plans for a WLUG summer barbecue. It might be a good idea to combine this with a 5th year anniversary celebration, as WLUG was originally founded in July of 1997. less & line numbers

This is weird... I can't get "less" to display line numbers in the left column. All that happens is that the text of the file I'm viewing shifts to the right, adding 2 blank columns. It looks like the shift amount is too small to display the numbers, so I don't get to see them. I'm seeing this on both RedHat 7.1 and 7.2 systems. On an older system (6.0?), less shows the line numbers. (I could have sworn that this was working right recently, but it doesn't now.) I'm using the "--LINE-NUMBERS" option to try to see the lines on the newer versions, and the "-N" option on the older versions. Any ideas? TIA, Bill

WMA --> MP3 conversion?

Hi all, I have a bunch of files that are in asf format. I understand that this is basically WMA (Windows Media Audio). Makes sense, since they are recordings of church services. :) Anyway, I want to convert them to MP3 so that I can hear them without having to stoop to loading certain Left Coast poor-excuse-for-operating-systems... Would anyone happen to know of a good/reasonable WMA-->MP3 converter for Linux? Wireless nics and linux.

Hi All, I may be FINALLY getting some wireless access in my house (It's amazing what a simple furniture move can accomplish). So I'm wondering, what wireless nics work in Linux. I've heard that there are some problems, do any of you have 802.11b networks at home (what's the mac address range.....wink)? If so, what nics are you using. Do the USB one's work (actually, I'll check this one out on my own, it's the pcmcia cards I need the info on). Thanks, Wes

Multiple mice on a laptop

Hello, I've got a laptop that usually resides in a docking station at work, where it is connected to an ordinary wheelmouse. That works fine. When I take the laptop out of the docking station, disconnect the mouse, and start up Linux again (so using the touchpad), the pointer tends to go crazy. Now, I know the reason for this is the protocol is wrong in the XF86Config file. The wheelmouse uses IMPS/2 with 5 buttons (3+wheel), the touchpad PS/2 with 2 buttons. I can fix this by editing the XF86Config file appropriately, and the touchpad works fine. Now, my question is: Is there any way to get Linux to automatically figure out that the mouse is not attached, and so fall back on the touchpad? BTW, I've set up two "Pointer" sections in XF86Config, and just adjust the CorePointer line to reference the correct one. XFree doesn't like having two CorePointers. I'm using SuSE 7.3, XFree86 4.x if it matters. Thanks, -Adam

I've got an HP tape drive model C1537A that has the annoying trait of rewinding itself automatically. Does anybody have any suggestions on ways to prevent this behavior? mt doesn't seem to have an option to turn this feature off. Thanks, Tim. strange filenames

Hi All For some reason i sometimes find files with strange names like '??'. When i do a long listing the file name changes to some other bizare character combination. When i try to delete the file using 'rm', or cat it, i can't seem to pass the correct filename to rm (i do try to escape characters, and use 'TAB' but no luck). Is there a way to pass an inode number to rm or cat? thanks, --brad

I've never seen output formatted like that before. tx-ovr (overruns) is the statistic to watch out for. What does lspci -v -v say about your ethernet card? If autonegotiation is disabled on only one end of the link, you will have a duplex mismatch since the other end will fall back to half duplex. I usually use tcpdump to write to a file, then copy it to my workstation and load it into ethereal there: server# tcpdump -i eth0 -s 1500 -w capture.pcap (the -s 1500 makes sure it captures the whole ethernet frames) I usually see these errors due to one of three reasons: 1. the netcard and/or driver is misconfigured (duplex, interrupt, etc.) 2. the netcard and/or driver is buggy or bad (usually seen on 3c503's :) 3. there is a TON of traffic on the network which is causing the card to not be able to keep up with the reception and transmission of all the packets. -- Charles R. weird ethernet problem...

I just moved a box from a testing network to a DMZ network and I'm getting all this weird ethernet crap... here's the error's I keep getting NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out status 7088 0c00 at 241/301 command 001c000 the commands are different along with the status codes. the box has a Intel 10/100 Pro card running at 100 full duplex. I hooked up a win2k laptop configured it to the proper ip in the DMZ and it worked fine, so I know it's not the link. Thanks, Tim.

USB Driver: Where to start?

Folks, I've got this idiot little USB camera that I got as part of a promotion. (Specifically, it's a QuickVideo weeCam USB from Alaris that I got a couple years back from Earthlink.) Near as I can figure, there are no drivers for this fool thing for Linux. IF I were to attack the problem, where should I start? I've noticed in the logs that the system sees it when it is connected and disconnected, so I suppose that's a Good Thing, but I don't know where to go from there.
