Hey folks! Since you're probably the biggest group of people I know that might have unused hardware floating around, I figured I'd see if you guys can help me out. I'm searching for some RAM for an older PC I have. Specifically, it's 66mhz SDRAM for a Compaq Deskpro that I'm trying to turn into something useful. Anyways, I was wondeirng if any of you guys might have a DIMM or two flaoting around that's gathering dust (I'll pay you for it) or might know where I can find some on the cheap, before I hit up any of the big guys that I know have the RAM (but at a premium price). Cinik worm (mod_ssl)

I have two rather new RH7.3 servers, which I installed without any patches (dumb- had never installed patches before). A couple of weeks ago both got infected with [different] strains of the Cinik (mod_ssl) worm. On machine "A" I shut down Apache for about a week, and left "B" running. On 10/5/02 I downloaded and installed RH patches for apache, bind, glibc, openssh, openssl, php and mod_ssl on both machines. I deleted the cinik stuff from /tmp. Machine "B" has been worm-free since. Cinik reappeared on machine "A" overnight last night -- process running and the usual suspect files back in /tmp. So currently I've got ISO's for Redhat 7.3/8.0 and Mandrake 8.0 (disks 1 and 2, but not the 3rd internationalization disk) What other distributions would people like me to make some copies of? Also, I'm going to put together my obligatory Disk-o-everything. As a side note, I personally think it would be cool if we could have a repository of WLUG goodies, but I know there'd be some logistics around that. So far this is what's going to be on it. rpm build error

I just rebuilt apache from the RH 8.0 source rpm. The compilation succeeded, but the rpm failed with the following error message: Checking for unpackaged file(s): /usr/lib/rpm/check-files /home/bcurran/tmp/rpmBuild/httpd-root error: Installed (but unpackaged) file(s) found: /etc/httpd/conf/mime.types /usr/bin/apr-config /usr/bin/apu-config /usr/lib/APRVARS <snip-more files> RPM build errors: Installed (but unpackaged) file(s) found: /etc/httpd/conf/mime.types /usr/bin/apr-config /usr/bin/apu-config /usr/lib/APRVARS <snip-more files> Neither the modified source nor the binary rpm were generated. It looks like these files made it into the temporary install area just prior to generating the packages, and they should not have been there. Is there an option I should be using to make the install tree "right"? I know I can modify the spec file to wildcard include everything in the install directories, but that doesn't seem right. My command: "rpmbuild -ba httpd.spec". TIA, Bill

Also, it should be noted that whatever version of fetchmail you've got on your machine, your going to want to upgrade it ASAP. A couple buffer overruns (via malformed mail) were just reported the other day... loading modules

I have a situation where I need to use a non-standard kernel module in place of one that comes with the RedHat 8.0 distribution, and I'd like to know the "right" way to achieve this. The module is a device driver for a Qlogic fibre host bus adapter. The reason for the special module is that the one that RedHat supplies does not handle all the fibre configurations we (EMC) need for an EMC/Clariion array. Here's what I've done thus far. 1. I have written an rpm to build the module from source and install it. I have given the module a unique name so it won't conflict with the kernel rpm file. 2. Once installed, I can run depmod, rmmod (on the old module) and modprobe (on the new module). (If I reboot, I don't need to run depmod.) Everything looks fine at this point, and I know I could put the appropriate commands (rmmod & modprobe) into /etc/rc.d/rc.local, but I'm wondering if there is something cleaner. One thing I tried (with no success) was to modify /etc/modules.conf **************** Old: alias scsi_hostadapter1 qla2200 New: alias scsi_hostadapter1 newmodule **************** I thought that this was the line that was making the standard module (qla2200) load. I found that qla2200 loaded even after my change, and the newmodule did not load. Suggestions? TIA, Bill

X tricks

Hi All, I was wondering if there is a way to create a window that would be a tunnel into another X server. For example if i'm running a server on :0 and on :1, i would like to have a window, which is connected to :0, that would show what is being displayed on :1. This is similar to how vmware works. When you start vmware in window on :0 it will actually start another X server on :1 and display (in a window) the contents on :1. Is this possible (other then with vmware)? Thanks, --brad

samba thanks & xmms Q

First, thanks to those who sent suggestions on how to solve my samba configuration problems. My Win98 box is happily using file and print shares from my linux box. (Too bad SANE does not have drivers for the scanner cartridge on my Canon printer. <sigh>) A new question. I tried getting the equalizer on xmms to control the output while playing audio CD's (not MP3's). The volume control on the main window works, and the playlist window works, but the equalizer doesn't. What's the trick? TIA, Bill

Is there any way of getting the email addresses in our mailing list archive removed? I've been getting a bunch of spam lately to hughesm(a)tomsnyder.com ... I just figured out that it was coming from a web spider (the damned fools attached their mailing list to the spam, and it said where it was from!) and the only place I can find that address posted is on the WLUG pages. As a former Tech Support Slave, tinkering with the registry of any Microsoft product is akin to hand editing your compressed kernel image... I'm not saying you can't do it, I just wouldn't.. Plus, any encryption (even microsoft) encryption is better than no encryption any day... Add this line in the global section of your smb.conf file and the world will be a happier place. encrypt passwords = yes Oh, and this works with every version of windows... Talking to BBC World ClickOnline at his home in Silicon Valley, the inventor of the Linux operating system admitted that he has never been in the same room with his arch-rival. "We have been at the same conferences but never in the same room. I wouldn't know what to say to him," he told ClickOnline. Mr Torvalds enjoys the notoriety he has achieved as the man that challenged the Microsoft empire with his open source alternative operating system. *Rising to the challenge "In a way it is fun. I'm pleased to be a poster boy. It gives me some self-importance," he said. He would not, however, want to become personally involved in the dispute with Microsoft. "I've tried to stay out of the Microsoft debate. If you start doing things because you hate others and want to screw them over the end result is bad," he said. The main reason he developed Linux in the first place had as much to do with wanting a challenge as being fed up with an operating system that would not do what he wanted it to. Like most technology projects it ran way over the time allotted to it and, to this day, is not truly finished. "It was a lot harder than I expected. I thought, like most of my projects, it would talk half a year and then I'd lose interest," he said. To the relief of his legion of followers he did persevere and eleven years on is still working on it. Reluctance to change While Linux is gradually gaining ground on Microsoft it might well not be suitable for everyone, Mr Torvalds admitted. "Most people don't want to change. They may hate Windows but they run it despite that because, quite frankly, they don't care about computers," he said. And even those that do care, often install Linux without much idea of what they want it to do, he said.
