Hi gang, any ideas why my microphone wouldn't be working in linux. It's set as the recording device, but isn't recording. My sound card uses the maestro3 module (ES1988 Allegro-1 card). I'm doing a search, but was wondering if any of you have had this problem. Wes

Hi all After the neglegible turnout of "customers" for our most recent installfest there was some discussion aa to whether the day of the installfest is past and we should look for other ways to serve the community. In this context I found this morning's (Oct 31) T&G had an interesting article which may provice a template for what we might now do. In a nutshell they described (pages A1 and A11) the Atlantic Paranormsl Society who for the past 12 years send out teams to help people who are having trouble with "domestic disturbances like eerie noises and signs of spirit possession". Their website, http://the-atlantic-paranormal-society.com/ gets 6000 hits a day from around the world" (they do not say whether setag lib is among them). They do not charge for their "work" and say "the rich and poor both need help" and say "Also how can you charge for something that cannot be proved to exist" (which does not seem to stop Micro$oft!). They have about 25 regular members, consult with a network of similar groups and gather at an eatery (Starbucks, not the Boynton). I suggest that, if you can find today's T&G you read the article since I cannot do justice to it here. For example, I learned about the taxonomy: Hauntings Human Intelligent spirits (they talk) Residuals (leftover energies condemned to repeat one small action from their lives) Poltergeists ("usually the spirits of young girls which make a racket and and can wreak havoc on property values") Inhuman Demons Incubuses Succubi Nature spirits Angles Apparently the human variety are the more "benign" while the others "can be viscious and deceitful", says "Never believe anything you hear from an inhuman haunting". Apparently other groups often get in over their heads and haveto call in his crew to "clean things up". (This is getting long; check out the T&G if you do not wish to miss the full picture.) Now I realixe some of this may sound scary but we would have the advantage that we could send Keith in first to scare the spirits! :-) So, instead of instalfests we could adapt to the times and move into deinstallfests! doug

Redhat has RPMS for apache, php, and ssl that all play nice together. Use those unless you have some weird requirement where you absolutly need to build your own. BUT, make sure to download the updated SSL libraries from RedHat! The ones on the CD have a remote exploit in them that you will want to close. If you do NEED to compile your own apache, ssl, etc ... then there is this nifty project called "The apache toolbox" http://www.apachetoolbox.com/ which makes the process much much easier. Since it can be difficult getting all those to work right, I'd suggest trying that. I'd un-install all of the current apache stuff you have before doing that.

Building RH7.3 server after 7.0 hacked -second request

SECOND REQUEST Additional information This does not appear to be just a problem with server (A). I cannot send mail between any of my three RH7.3 mail servers, but all will send mail locally, and all will send to / receive from the outside world. I am using a RH7.3 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc except for commenting out the DAEMON-OPTIONS line to allow outside mail, and turning off FEATURE(`accept_unresolvable_domains') Is there some change to the sendmail in RH7.3 of which I am unaware that could cause this? I would appreciate any suggestions of where to even look to solve this problem. ------------------------------ As some of you may recall from a mid-week email, two of my RH7.0 servers were badly hacked Tuesday about 5AM, and I lost ssh and think I received a trojan. Friday the hacking got worse - all outgoing mail was rejected as "relaying denied", so I decided to bite the bullet and format the drive and build a new server. This was made more interesting by the fact the RH7.3 wouldn't finish loading packages until I disconnected my second HD which previously held /var, and my web sites (tried 3-4 times) .. "Kernel unable to reread partition table on /tmp/hdc (device or resource busy)", then hung mid-package loading. Late Saturday afternoon I pulled the plug, and started a RH7.3 install. Midmorning I was done, including security patches and had no internet connection .. couldn't even ping from the server. Fortunately, it was just my ISP picking this time to be down for the first time in months. Now I have one remaining problem which over 8 hours of work has clarified, but not solved. Hi Marc, The KDE for the server was not working for it so I fixed it, removing all the rpms and re-installing them, I even reinstalled "gd".So I was wondering if any other libraries related to X-server were broken too. So you're saying that you can use X on the machine, right? If so, I'd look other places for the problem. Double check that your DISPLAY is set properly and access is enabled. This was the exact same error message I used to get when java couldn't connect to the xserver. I find doing something like this: nohup Xvfb :1 -screen 0 800x600x24 & sleep 5 export DISPLAY=localhost:1 xhost + SERVERCOMMAND <- (Whatever you need to do to start the server) Is best since it uses a virtual x server instead of the real one. Hi all, Thanks to everyone who tried to help me with my usb problems, it's always a pain when you know WHAT is wrong, but you don't know how to FIX it. Today I went to compUSA got their cheap-o usb2.0 cardbus card for $50, took it home and installed it. IT WORKS. So, when the next kernel fixes this apic promlem I'll have my 2 usb 1.1 ports AND 2 usb2.0 ports as well. I love linux sometimes, well, most times really. What do you mean when you say it seems broken? Are there other symptoms besides the java connection to it? Can you sit down at the machine and use X? If this is a server, you probably don't want that ability (that's where Xvfb comes in). What Xserver are you running? I'm guessing this is a server (the errors you showed before made it look more like a servlet than an applet)... So are you running X? If so, when you start the server do you set your DISPLAY variable correctly? Does the server process have access to the Xserver? If you're not running an Xserver, you need to. Weird, huh? Hi, With reply to my previous mail I've figured out that Java "awt" is looking for some parameters in X-windows. I think the X is broken. I'm a new member. I'm an elem. librarian in NE, Pa. near Binghamton,ny I just got approval and installed a linux box in our library to run a couple of demo programs worldwatch clock simulator and kstars. In screen saver I now run phosphores, which I have written text for using echo and printf in a bash shell. I would like to use noseguy but don't understand how it works?? I have read it likes to run fortunes, and yet when I use either the text files or .dat it won't read.Permission denial, chmod 777== can't execute binary?? Regular text files are not parsed and it deadlocks. What do you think? Should I write a program in python to parse a text file(out of my ken). There is probably something stupid I can't see TIA Re-v

Peram, I'll ask an obvious question... You've verified that both machines running the same version of the java run time environment? Also, does the entire applet fail or does it just fail to display the graph. If so, you might have to insert some code to catch exceptions... Possibly some library has gotten mangled... Hi , I've a program that generates graphs with Java 1.3.1_01. The same program is able to generate graphs on a machine with RH 6.2 kernel 2.4.16 but it fails to generate graphs on a machine with RH 6.2 kernel 2.4.7-10 on which it used to generate before. I've installed KDE and gd thinking that something may broken in the OS on the jpegs generation part. But that doesn't seem to help. I'd appreciate if any of you gurus can guide me in this issue with your comments and suggestions. Setag Lib, Microsoft linux is very very good. I use it all the time, though I find I keep getting "SEG_HATESELF" errors all the time.
