After two hours on the phone Mon afternoon with Qwest tech support level 2, they insisted I try ping/traceroute with the firewall disabled. Pings moved through as expected ...hmmmm I'd been through the firewall code so many times I just about had it memorized, so I decided to look at the file rc.firewall.blocked which it reads, which has of a list of IPChains statements blocking IP#s (which the main firewall doesn't do). I hadn't really updated this much recently, because when someone started banging on the firewall, it was tough to know if it was a static IP or not. Anyways ... found TWO entries that were <Home IP#>/24 and <Home network>/24 ... basically the same thing. Don't remember putting THOSE in there <g> When I rebuilt the last hacked machine (EFO) I copied rc.firewall and rc.firewall.blocked from the home machine, because I couldn't read the copies I'd backed up from EFO.... so the block against the Home IP was at both ends of the link. The only mystery is why everything worked for two hours Friday night before I reloaded the EFO firewall -- because the rc.firewall.blocked file hadn't been changed in more than a week, and had already been loaded with the firewall when I first brought up the EFO server on Friday. Now if I could get any takers on finding out why none of my servers can send email to each other (but only each other) since they were upgrade from RH7.0 to RH7.3 (sendmail 8.11.6) I'll be all set. With the locking (:0:) all seems to work now. I'm guessing it's because I have an IMAP connection open to the mailbox while I receive the new email and it get's processed. While we're talking about procmail... A second question: :0: * ^From.*jenny(a)axte84\.com * ^Subject.*MILLION OPT-IN EMAIL ADDRESSES Badspam This will do an AND between the two conditions ... Is there an easy way to OR between them? ... Or do I need to make a separate rule for each and every condition? And an even further note... What are the thoughts on some of these anti-spam tools that work with procmail? Any favorites? So it's a good idea if you're writing to a mailbox, but isn't actually required, especially if you're writing to /dev/null or something. According to the man page the second ":" is optional, i.e. :0: but, as a sample of something known to work (from the SpamAssassin sample .procmailrc) it does use the above syntax. Here's the example: # Mails with a score of 15 or higher are almost certainly spam (with 0.05% # false positives according to rules/STATISTICS.txt). Let's put them in a # different mbox. (This one is optional.) :0: * ^X-Spam-Level: \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* mail/almost-certainly-spam The above *does* work on my system (RHL8.0). I have a procmail question.... I have this rule: :0 * ^From:.*hughesm@tomsnyder.com test That doesn't seem to work. But this rule... :0c * ^From:.*hughesm@tomsnyder.com test ... Works just fine ... But I want the first rule, I don't want it to copy (what the :0c does) I want it to move (:0) Am I doing something wrong? Thanks! -Marc

x86 emulation/vmare clone

Is anyone familiar with any open-source versions of x86 emulation software that I can use instead of VMWare? It seems that the plex86 project has moved, and I can not find out much info on status of software - ie how usable etc.???? My goal is to run linux with win2k as a virtual machine for the few work related things I need.

gnome desktop menus?

I've installed RedHat 8.0 on my system, and I've decided to finally wean myself from fvwm2 and use the default setup. I've been poking around trying to figure out how to add entries to the panel menus. There doesn't seem to be a gui interface to do it. (There is a gui to add stuff to the desktop and to the panel, but not the menus.) I suspect that the secret handshake is contained in /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/ directories, but I haven't found the secret decoder ring to help figure out the right way to do this. My main motivation is to add some favorite applications to the menus for my family. They are not about to use the command line. Does anyone have any suggestions? TIA, Bill

Routing problem -can I believe the ISP tech? #2

My apologies for the HTML, it was not intentional. I was trying to make part of the email more (not less) readable. I've changed options so hopefully it will never happen again. ======== I just brought up my fourth RH7.3 server Friday afternoon (one of two RH7.0 servers that had been hacked-new hard drive and software). I then went home and spent a couple of hours connected to it with ssh on a workstation connected to my home RH7.3 server. When I went to rerun a slightly modified (open ports for ftp and internal dhcp twiddling) ipchains firewall I lost the connection, and, more than 16 hours later, don't have it back. Other relevant details. (let's call the servers Home and EFO) Home was the other hacked server, and was formatted and rebuilt last weekend. Home and EFO are on the same ISP and each has a block of 4 static IPs. The blocks share the first 18 bits of their IP#s. Home could connect to EFO last night Home now cannot connect to EFO via ssh, or access its web site. Pings are disabled on all my servers - so I can't do that test. EFO network workstations can browse the web; I can ping out from the EFO linux box or workstations, and can ping EFO's Cisco 678 router from its Linux box EFO workstations cannot access Home websites (but I had not tried this before since rebuilding EFO Linux box Home Cisco 678 cannot be pinged from Home Linux box (!) or EFO (Linux or workstation), but can be pinged from my office (Linux box on other ISP). >From my office workstation I can also ssh to EFO and access EFO website (which in fact I uploaded to the new server from my office today). Does this discount the possibility of a firewall issue? I spent countless hours talking to the ISP (Qwest) tech support, and over an hour with a senior tech who had some Linux knowledge, and he claims that it must be a configuration issue on one or both of my Home and EFO Linux boxes, since: He can login to both my Cisco routers and ping the other router - he claims this proves its not a Qwest routing problem. If he's right I'm still puzzled by two things: a) Why could I connect from Home to EFO for two hours last night, no problems? b) Why can't the Home Linux box ping the Cisco 678 directly connected to it? I found that http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ as a good site with review on DSL/Cable routers and home wireless equipment. www.homepna.org was another good site for home networks. But if you were looking at basic information such as installing NIC card and Ethernet Basics. Microsoft Press has a Network book; Cisco Press has a Network book. Both book are the basis for each's Cert Exam Curriculum. Hi gang, I've got a ma401 card from netgear. It worked beautifully under linux (better than in windows even). Today I switch on my laptop, and I no longer get a link to my network with the card. I figure I must've had a power glitch and my firewall isn't giving out dhcp address, so I restart it. Still no link. I check the settings of my wireless router, all good. I boot my desktop to see if my usb wireless card works, it does. None of my settings on my laptop have changed, I checked. I tweak with iwconfig until my hands are sore, no luck. So I finally call netgear because I figure that it is a hardware issue and I need to send in the card to have at least the antenna replaced. Tech support says, "I'm sorry but we can only trouble-shoot on windows so we can't help you." I tell them, "It's not a software issue, nothing has changed with my software from last night, everything is the same, the card is not picking up the link from the router, it's not functioning, it's a hardware issue..." They say, "But we need to troubleshoot in windows." I say, "Look, I've turned encryption on and off, I've tried different modes, I've tried different channels, I've turned rts and frag on and off [note: now it's not accepting values, another clue that this is a hardware problem]. Nothing works, your card is broken and I want to send it in." I'm told to hold. "I'm sorry, we cannot help you. We need to troubleshoot in windows." I slam the phone on the reciever so hard I think I nearly break it. Now I am pissed, and I still have a broken card. Does anyone else have any history with wireless antennas not working all of the sudden? This card hasn't even been out of the house, I leave it here when I go out for crying out loud! My next attempt will to disable encryption and go back to wvlan_cs to see if that jogs this thing. But I truly think it's hardware; nothing, NOTHING, on my laptop changed, I didn't even turn it on this morning! I don't even know who sent it, because I got tired of watching it download and telnet'ed into my pop server to delete it totally unread. Can the mailing list software be configured to throw any message more than, say, a generous 200K, into /dev/null and reply to the sender with a polite message about his mother and a baboon? Hello: Please help me get this straight. I am confused. I have a dnscache running at home on a DMZ network. I would like to know if I can have friends on other networks (in the Internet) to use my server as their resolver server? I have a firewall in place but, I'm directing all the udp traffic to port 53 to my dns-server; also my dnscache server is accepting connections from those networks ip's. Can I do this or do I need to register ($$$$$) a the dns-server? I spent four hours on Google last night about this problem. Saw reports of the same messages, but not the same situation. SUMMARY: 3 separate servers upgraded from RH7.0 to RH7.3 - all can send/receive mail locally and to/from the outside world EXCEPT for/from each other - which was not a problem under RH7.0. Do not believe there are errors in config files, particularly /etc/mail/local-host-names, and I have read the part of the sendmail FAQ about "mail loops back to me" and it DOES NOT APPLY in this case. I've been through what sendmail documentation I can understand - can someone tell me what has changed somewhere prior to or at 8.11.6 which shipped with RH7.3 that might cause this? I have another identically hacked RH7.0 server which I hope to rebuild/upgrade tonight - it will be interesting to see if all FOUR servers have the same problem. I'm losing mail which is supposed to be forwarded between these servers. Dick

rpm lock-up

HELP! I seem to have done something very bad (SVB) to rpm. And, it seems to be painfully reproducible (I did it to two machines). Short explanation: 1. Do some rpm command (I was using "rpm -e", I think). 2. Ctrl-C out. You won't get the shell prompt back. Now, that user account can no longer do any rpm commands from any session -- it always hangs. You can kill -9 the existing rpm processes, but nothing I've tried helps until reboot. Longer explanation: 1. I wanted to upgrade a couple of packages: perl-GD and perl-Chart. I don't know where I got the old packages :-( , but I made some new ones of my own. 2. Instead of doing "rpm -F", I forgot that the perl modules were installed from an rpm in an older perl library area, and I deleted the module files (rm). (oops) (Is this clear?) 3. When attempting to install the new rpm's, I got error messages, so I tried "rpm -e" on the old package. That failed due to dependencies, so I added "--nodep" to the command. This was taking a long time (hung?), so I ctrl-c'ed out. Now all rpm commands (from the root account) hung. 4. I rebooted this morning. The rpm commands were working ok (at least "rpm -qa" worked), so I tried "rpm -F <packageFileName>" (as root), and it's hung. 5. From another window (also as root), "rpm -qa" hangs again. 6. From a different account, "rpm -qa" works fine. HELP! 1. How do I fix things and get my new packages in? 2. Is the database corrupted? 3. If the database is corrupted, how do I fix it? Thanks, Bill

Hi gang, any ideas why my microphone wouldn't be working in linux. It's set as the recording device, but isn't recording. My sound card uses the maestro3 module (ES1988 Allegro-1 card). I'm doing a search, but was wondering if any of you have had this problem. Wes

Hi all After the neglegible turnout of "customers" for our most recent installfest there was some discussion aa to whether the day of the installfest is past and we should look for other ways to serve the community. In this context I found this morning's (Oct 31) T&G had an interesting article which may provice a template for what we might now do. In a nutshell they described (pages A1 and A11) the Atlantic Paranormsl Society who for the past 12 years send out teams to help people who are having trouble with "domestic disturbances like eerie noises and signs of spirit possession". Their website, http://the-atlantic-paranormal-society.com/ gets 6000 hits a day from around the world" (they do not say whether setag lib is among them). They do not charge for their "work" and say "the rich and poor both need help" and say "Also how can you charge for something that cannot be proved to exist" (which does not seem to stop Micro$oft!). They have about 25 regular members, consult with a network of similar groups and gather at an eatery (Starbucks, not the Boynton). I suggest that, if you can find today's T&G you read the article since I cannot do justice to it here. For example, I learned about the taxonomy: Hauntings Human Intelligent spirits (they talk) Residuals (leftover energies condemned to repeat one small action from their lives) Poltergeists ("usually the spirits of young girls which make a racket and and can wreak havoc on property values") Inhuman Demons Incubuses Succubi Nature spirits Angles Apparently the human variety are the more "benign" while the others "can be viscious and deceitful", says "Never believe anything you hear from an inhuman haunting". Apparently other groups often get in over their heads and haveto call in his crew to "clean things up". (This is getting long; check out the T&G if you do not wish to miss the full picture.) Now I realixe some of this may sound scary but we would have the advantage that we could send Keith in first to scare the spirits! :-) So, instead of instalfests we could adapt to the times and move into deinstallfests! doug

Redhat has RPMS for apache, php, and ssl that all play nice together. Use those unless you have some weird requirement where you absolutly need to build your own. BUT, make sure to download the updated SSL libraries from RedHat! The ones on the CD have a remote exploit in them that you will want to close. If you do NEED to compile your own apache, ssl, etc ... then there is this nifty project called "The apache toolbox" http://www.apachetoolbox.com/ which makes the process much much easier. Since it can be difficult getting all those to work right, I'd suggest trying that. I'd un-install all of the current apache stuff you have before doing that.
