Color matching scanned photos vs. printed output

Hi Everybody, I've been playing with my new toy, an Epson 1660 Photo scanner, which works very nicely with Linux. I have noticed that photos that I scan in and then print don't look the same as the original. I am using Xsane, Gimp-Print, and CUPS. If it matters, the photo is 4x6 inches, scanned at 400 DPI, and printed in 1440x720 high quallity mode. The photo was originally printed from my 3 Mpixel digital camera (2160x1440 pixels), so I believe I've used a more than sufficient DPI when scanning. I suspect the problem is that neither the scanner nor the printer is perfect, and that the cumulative effects of the transfer functions (scanner to computer to monitor to computer to printer) are causing this. Its actually worse if I let Xsane compensate for me with its automatic adjustments of gamma, brightness, and contrast. Adjusting the image on my monitor screen probably isn't going to help much since my monitor isn't perfect, nor is there any guarantee that I have it properly adjusted. Is there any good way, other than trial and error, to fix this? Would generating some simple test patterns help in making the proper adjustments? Toshiba Laptop?

Hi gang, What's your collective opinion of Toshiba laptops? Circuit City has got a decent machine (Satellite 1415-s173) for $999 and they actually let me boot Knoppix on it to check out hardware support (everything worked). The only thing I'm wondering about is the battery. MY HP laptop doesn't let Linux read the battery info with either apm or acpi, and I think this is a function of an incredibly bad bios implementation. The demo models at Circuit City didn't have batteries, so I had no way of checking this bug out on that brand. Does anyone have experience with a Toshiba laptop that has an acpi bios? Can you relate your experience to me? Wes

Have you considered a Apple iBook or Powerbook? An iBook runs for about $1000 and PB's $2000. Compared to my Dell Laptop for work.. Apple has some nice hardware. I have an iBook 500mhz.. I was shocked how well Yellow Dog Linux ran on it. The speed difference over Mac OS X was very noticable. I also tried Mandrake PPC linux on it, not very impressed with it. Unfortunetly, the 20 gig drive I placed in the iBook fried, so all I have now is Mac OS X. The 10 gigs is too tight for a dual system. I'm having a hard time converting the wife to linux.<G> A buddy down in CT has a Powerbook running Yellow Dog also, only issue is the ATI video is not fully supported yet. just throwing my 2 cents in.. You mean not close to working with Linux? I was looking for a simple machine (ie. more powerful than my desktop P-200 was my minimum requirement) that would be ultra portable. I was looking for something uber-small and uber-light that I'd carry around with me everywhere because it was so uber-small and uber-light. I decided on a Fujitsu Lifebook P-2000, and it was the best purchasing descision of my life. It has a couple of 1337 features: * 800MHz Crusoe chip (I mean come on, Linus helped design the chip!) * 16:9 aspect ratio screen (1280x768), awesome for watching DVDs * Wikkid 6+ hour battery life, with so-called "normal usage" * Tiny: 10.5" by 6" by 1" * Optional integrated 802.11b * Everything works in Linux except the shatty WinModem All of my friends (who don't want a 19" screen on their laptop) drool over the thing, so I'd highly recommend it if you don't need a number-crunchin' gaming system. -Chuck

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 that works perfectly under Linux. I can suspend and resume it just fine, which impresses a lot of folks since they can't even do that under Windows. The 8200 is the current model; you can find 8000's and 8100's for reasonable money on eBay. It's a big, clunky-looking machine, but the internals are well done, it's very fast, and it has a very nice screen (1400x1050 or 1600x1200; none of this silly 1024x768 on a 15" screen). It can also take two batteries. I'd actually go for an 8000 rather than an 8200 if you want long battery life; the slower processors (mine is 700 MHz) make for much longer battery life. I get 5 hours from a 2700 and 3800 mAH battery; you can buy 4400 mAH batteries now, which should give about 7 hours of battery life. There are lots of other configuration options; you can get a combo DVD/CDRW drive, or two optical drives, if you like. I'm a big fan of Dells and have run Linux on a few Inspiron and Latitude models (my current laptop is an Inspiron 8000). Every piece of hardware in it was supported out of the box by Mandrake: ATi video card, Maestro3 sound, EEPro100 onboard ethernet, DVD drive, and winmodem, which is of the Lucent variety, though I never bothered to set it up as I don't have any dial-up accounts. They're a bit more pricey than what you can find in a clearance at a store, but they're very customizable for a laptop (on Dell's web site), and that made it worth it to me. My $0.02. Brian J. Both my video card and the onboard sound card are assigned to IRQ11, in both windows and linux. Device Manager and KDE Control Center say that there's no conflict. Does this make sense? Thanks in advance, Greg

Thanks for all the help...It seems I may be locked out of my local lan while connected :( I now have a semi-minor issue to solve. When connected to the vpn I can use realplayer to listen to internet radio after configuring the necessary proxy server. I have not been able to configure xmms play the same links. I have gotten both vpn's coexisting nicely with each other. I can now connect to my desktop at work via vnc. It looks like I can now remove my windows partition...YEA! Now for my final issue. I have not been able to configure my cisco vpn to allow me access to my local lan when connected the vpn is running. This is proving to be most inconvenient because I do have a web server running that is accessable to the outside world. Unfortunately the webserver is unavailable when the vpn is activated. I am thinking that if I add a second nic card to the box and configure it properly that I should be able to have one card handle the webserver traffic and the other card will handle the vpn traffic. Does this seems like a sane configuration? If so can someone point me to documentation that will explain how to accomplish this. Thanks again, Mike > Well, my editor ate that one... zaurus

Hi gang, Well, I'm thinking about just going out and getting a zaurus for myself, I've seem them for around $330 as some places. Should I do this, or just convert my iPAQ as I planned? There are some features of the iPAQ that I like (like inviting attendees to meetings), but getting some sync-ability with Linux is just over the top for me.... Anyone get zaurus to sync with Evolution? Wes

encyclopedia

Hi all I wonder whether I have found a gap in availability of applications for Linux :-( Specifically, I have been looking for a CD encyclopedia which will run on a Linux box (in particular a couple I set up for my two grandkids). Wine does not seem to provide a work-around both because it does not seem to be happy with any CD encyclopedia and because it would require buying Win* to get the CD stuff installed (and neither computer is worth as much as Win* would cost). I tried searching for Linux + Encyclopedia but that just gives me encyclopedias about Linux. A search for CD + Encyclopedia gave a reasonable list but none runs under Linux (as you might expect, all run under Wintel and a few on Macs). Does anyone know of a general CD encyclopedia that one can use with Linux? doug PS The grandkids take to the linux boxes quite naturally. I showed the older one how to type "lpr -Plp3 filename" to print a file. He later reported that he tried it on his brother's box but, since it was a second computer and Q comes after P and 4 comes after 3 he used -Plp4 (obvious isn't it:-) ) and it worked! :-)

Thanks Charles, Resolving the issue in part 1 concerning my wifes vpn was resolved by upgrading the linksys firmware. After the upgrade IPSec passthrough was turned off and everything works well. vpn behind firewall

Happy Holidays to all, I have a 2 part question concerning my particular use of vpns. I have a home network behind a Linksys firewall/router and am technically incompetent when it comes to vpn's. Part 1: The company my wife works for has upgraded her vpn software and it no longer plays well with firewalls at the client end. I have an appointment with her tech support Thursday morning but would appreciate it if anyone could give me some clues or at least some intelligent questions to ask so that I might make this thing work. It is sometimes necessary to "help" the help desk in order that they can help you. :) Part 2: I am planning to fire up a vpn connection to my employer on Thursday for the first time. Are there any issues running 2 vpn connections behind a firewall. Thanks, Mike

X-server minutiae

Now that I have X working again, some colors are different. The outline box that appears when opening a window in fvwm2 has changed from yellow to purple, which is nice because it's easier to see, but my cursor is very pale gray. Anyone know how to change a cursor color? Am I nuts to even think about messing with it? Greg

kernel saga continues

I managed to get my online connection working again. Just had to change "ippp0" to "ppp0" in my firewall config file. I was also able to make a lilo boot floppy from command line, and it worked, exept for my initial menu. I rebooted back and forth a few times between the two floppies, and they both seemed to be working, and then when I went into x-session, I had no mouse. WTF??? Why did I lose kernel support for other stuff when all I messed with was "sound"? Then I made the mistake of going into XF86Setup. Now, I can't get into x at all. Questions 1. Can anyone tell me where the problem is? (other than "user") 2. Is there someplace in make xconfig or make menuconfig to provide support for xfree? At one point, I got an error message about not being able to load a module when trying to get into x. 3. Would it make sense to go back to the distribution disks, remove and re-insall xfree? Thanks. I just saw this article and thought to myself, "wouldn't this be something interesting for WLUG and WPILA to put on." Its a competition where teams take turns attacking and defending a linux server. This particular server happens to be running apache, but it could be anything really. I think this would be a neat little event to run. What does everyone else think? Linux too much like windows?

I found this article while reading my daily dose of slashdot. It brings some questions to mind. Is linux becoming too much like windows? Does it need to in order to compete in the desktop business? One of my friends was commenting that for servers, linux is the best, however it just loses when it comes to the desktop market. What do you guys think about that? I'm not a gamer and primarily do systems administration work as well as php development and I love my redhat 8.0 with gnome2. What do others out there feel? kernel - Help!

I'm in windows right now, which is where I automatically boot to if I don't use the floppy. I only get a choice of boots with floppy. Tried recompiling the kernel with sound, added the lbn32(?) line to /etc/lilo and the cylinder error went away, but somehow I lost support for ipchains and lost the suse firewall. Also lost support for vfat. I went back into make xconfig and started messing around with ppp support, vfat and dos support. Got my vfat back ok. Also had to go in and re-edit /etc/rc.config and /etc/rc.config.d/firewall- somethingorother.config. I think I need to review my selections in those files. At first, I could dialup and as soon as it would connect, it would disconnect, and pppd would give error message 4, no support for ppp in kernel. I went back in and selected netfilter with ipchains support, and ppp with async support. Now it will connect and stay connected, but I can't send or receive anything (mail or web). Oh, and I removed the sound support from the kernel, but I'm still getting error messages about trying to load the sound modules. Let me know if I did something obvious. Meanwhile, I'll review what I did. Thanks, Greg

I just recently upgraded my hosting plan to include sub domains, shell access and a few other goodies. My original site had all of the images in an images directory. To avoid copying all of the images to each new sub domain/directory I created an images directory for each sub directory and ran ln *.* /path/to/sub/images from within the real images directory. This worked great but is it only a one shot deal? I.E. if I add another image to the main directory do I need to run ln again? Server is FreeBSD 4.7 with Apache/1.3.27 I didnt try hard linking the directories since my books say that you need to be root to do so but I think that is what I really needed. kernel questions

I'm trying to get oss sound modules compiled into kernel. make xconfig was easy enough to get through. instructions say to then make dep and make bzImage or bzlilo. 1. I get errors on this, because I'm above cylinder 1023 on my dual-boot drive. I boot linux from floppy with lilo. Error message suggests using lba32 option, but it doesn't say where or how to use it. How do I get around this? 2. Instructions say next to install the kernel. Is that done by typing make install? In addition to the make install that comes after make modules? (see below) 3. I haven't been able to create a lilo boot disk for awhile. I'm using Yast2 to configure boot mode, and it keeps telling me that my floppy is write protected and it can't access the boot sector. I've tried this with new floppies that have been formated with fdformat /dev/fd0. Thanks for any insight. Here are the instructions I'm looking at: > 1.
