You could of just used either knoppix or cool kinux to boot of the CD drive, no need to install suse just to run reiserfsck. I have bough becuase for soem reason one works one some of my computer while ther other oen does not, dont quite understand. I ended up buying SuSE 8.2 and installing it on another drive. I then used reiserfsck that came with it to repair the partition. Big mistake, the data was lost. Now I am off to rebuild my system from backups. :(

I got the bright idea...finally...to look at the boot partition (hdb5). I ran badblock and it came back with no bad blocks. Next reiserfsck --fix-fixable /dev/hda5 was run with the following results: reiserfs_open: bitmap 0 was marked free reiserfs_open: first bitmap looks corrupted Analyzing journal..Segmentation fault Could this be why my drives are mounting as readonly? How do I correct this problem? Up to this point I have only installed SuSE and upgraded my system with SuSE upgrade tools. I am now in the process of learning how file systems work so I might as well learn how to build and install a new kernel. Can you point me to a good HOW-TO or some other documentation explaining how to upgrade a kernel or is google my best bet? I have 2 disks in my system. Disk 1(hda) has windows and SuSE7.3 installed on it. Disk 2(hdb) has SuSE 8.0. When booting SuSE8.0 it mounts the partition hdb7 ("/") as readonly. This was not the case until the system was rebooted last week. Prior to the reboot I could read and write to the partition. I was out of town when I started having connectivity issues and had the wife reboot the machine. I had ownly been accessing the machine for email and file storage and don't know what has changed. When booting into SuSE 7.3 I can mount hdb7 as rw. I believe the problem has something to do with the boot process but am not sure. I have now been able to boot the system using another drive. The original boot drive (hda7) can be mounted successfully with the following fstab configuration: /dev/hda7 /data2 reiserfs noauto,user 0 0 When reiserfsck /data2 is run I get the following messages: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs format found on /data2 reiserfsck: --rebuild-sb may restore reiserfs super block What are the ramifications of running this? Is this something that can cause the data on the disk to be lost? Thanks for any help, Mike

Help! System booting as readonly

While away on business I lost the ability to ssh into my computer. I had my wife ping it from within the home network and she was unable to. After walking her through some ifconfig diagnostics (she is a technically challanged individual) I next had her reboot the box in the hope that it would "fix" the problem. It did not solve the problem. Now that I am home I see that it is mounting the drives as readonly. The following is a partial listing of the dmesg: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2 VFS: Mounted root (reiserfs filesystem) readonly Trying to move old root to /initrd ... failed Unmounting old root clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6006: writing inode 927 on readonly FS clm-6005: writing inode 927 on readonly FS How do I go about diagnosing and fixing this problem? Hi all, I've just re-compilled all the system's need such as openssl, php and its need, etc. Here, I got a problem like this : [root@voyager named]# ftp 192.168.21.22 Connected to 192.168.21.22 (192.168.21.22). 530 TLS subsystem failed. ftp> Can you please inform me what was wrong with this ? Is it a kind of problem which caused by openssl upgrade ? How can I solve this ? In fact, I get a slow connection too when accessing local mail using browser. I can send and receive mail fast using outlook. Thanks.

whois question

Is there a way to do a whois search for a registrants name, and get all the domains registered in that name? I checked the RIPE help file (whois -h whois.ripe.net HELP), but I don't understand it. I figure there's some way to do an inverse search with the -i switch, but it's not doing what I want it to do. Thanks. Greg

CD/DVD-ROM question

I just noticed that my boot message tells me that my CD-ROM and CDRW drives are also DVD-ROM. I wasn't aware that either of them had that capability when I bought them. All those spam messages about reading DVD from my CD-ROM went in the trash without being read, so now I'm wondering. Is it possible to read a DVD on a CD drive? If so, how? If not, why does the boot message say that? Thanks. Greg

Flaky disks or controller?

HI Everybody, Having recently rebuilt my "good" computer, I'm now seeing a bunch of disk I/O errors in my system log. I have 3 SCSI disks connected to a Symbios controller using the sym53c8xx module and a 2.4.20 kernel. At first, I suspected an individual drive, as it is nearly 4 years old, and all of the errors were there. I have since physically removed that drive, and now the other drives are logging errors rather sporatically. Typically, I see an error message from reiserfs about how it couldn't write to the drive, and a disk I/O error in the log. The system is then wedged and requires a reboot. With the problem showing up on all 3 SCSI drives, I'm now suspicious of the (used) controller which I received as a "present" from a guy at work. If it should be the controller, do you folks have recommendations about reasonably priced SCSI controllers? I have 6 SCSI devices in my system and I need 68-pin as well as 50-pin capabilities. One of my disks is U160, and I think the others are slower, but with disks always getting faster, I'd probably want a U160 controller. I don't think I want to pay the premium for a U320 controller. Linux and wireless 802.11b

I haven't had any luck getting a Netgear MA401 802.11b PCMCIA card working. I'm using RH 7.3 (2.4.18 kernel). I rebuilt the kernel to turn on support for the card, but I can't get a connection to my access point (a Netgear WG602). The kernel boots and tries to start the eth0 interface, which doesn't exist, since there's no CAT5 cable pluggeg into the ethernet port. The output of ifconfig shows the only interface that's up is the loopback (lo) interface. I have an HP Pavilion zt1180 laptop. Is there anything else I need to do? rpm problems

when i do rpm --rebuilddb it hangs. I have to do a kill -9 to fix it. I can't install any rpm's If i reboot my box I can use RPM again. however only to install one rpm. After that, i must reboot again to use another rpm. Old drive - new machine?

I have a RedHat 7.3 server that is sick. It would appear that there are all kinds of hard disk errors but I don't think its the hard drive because its done it with two new hard drives. I'm guessing its the on-motherboard disk controller. It will boot up okay, but after a (steadily decreasing) amount of time the errors begin again and the hard drive light stays on. The question is: the motherboard is an old Socket-7 AT Epox which I can't replace exactly -- what are the issues involved with swapping the drive (which I believe is okay) into a new machine with a different motherboard, without reloading RH 7.3 or my data?

NEW Pioneer DVD-RW A05 for sale

Folks, Ever made a mistake? I did. I purchased a new DVD-RW drive to replace the unit I thought was defective. After the unit arrived (Thursday) I subsequently trace the problem to an intermittent IDE cable. I'd like to sell the new one if anyone's in the market.
